Thanks I got it sorted now :) I knew how to create a menu, but I thought I could just create a menu on another view in order to have it view-specific. I didn't spot I could just get the parameter of the view that triggered it. Override onCreateOptionsMenu() in your activity class like so: @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { menu.add(0, 1, 0, "Item1"); menu.add(0, 2, 0, "Item1"); return true; } Should work automatically with your canvas view.
