2010-08-09 Thread Doug
In case people don't know this, you can create a product web site
with facebook that you don't have to be a facebook member to see. You
do have to have a facebook account yourself, and if someone wants to
post or discuss, they have to have accounts. It's a perfectly usable
place to share general information about your product.

1)
Often there is no way to list the changes when people
get an update-notification and ask themself what the benefit of
upating would be. (So it's often not done.)
2)
It's definately too little to explain why your app needs each listed
access-permission. (So not a single app I've seen does that.)
3)
There is no way to answer to comments. People often enter bugs or
wishes there but never update their comment even month later when
a new version already adressed that issue.

If you have a smaller, active community who shares and talks about your
application on Facebook versus a larger, silent community who occasionally
looks at your website, on which platform would you spend your time
developing?

So it's not a matter of ignoring the larger base of users, it's just a
matter of focusing on users who want to talk about your application and give

Also consider making a Facebook page. I've done this for my Zen Timer

I'm finding it more and more difficult to balance the demands of
marketing + development + customer support (development is suffering -
and it's the only thing that I do well!). So I'm scaling back my
website and focusing more on Facebook for now - we'll see how it goes.

As it is, it takes away much of the incentive to add new features to
an app since you won't be able to explain (or even mention) it to
potential customers via the market.

To market your app, feel free to checkout 'AppFriend for Facebook' on
Android Market. It's gotten quite a bit of usage from users and from looking
at the stats, some of the apps that users share get quite a few additional
'Likes' as it moves through the network. There is also a link on the app
pages that allows users to go to your website.

What's nice about this approach is that when a user shares the app info
(with comments), their facebook friends will see it on their wall and then
they can go to the page and click to open the app description in Android
Market.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Website for your app, how important do you feel it is?

2010-08-06 Thread Miguel Morales
I don't think a website is the greatest way to promote your app.
It's hard to turn a person browsing the internet to install an app to
their phone.
The barcode method makes it a bit easier, but still the conversion
rate isn't that great.

However, having a website is pretty necessary in my opinion. If your
app does anything interesting at all.
I think the best way is to have a site that works both on the mobile
device and on a personal computer.

This can help you two ways, you can create a community from your
'power' users to help you in refining your app.
You can also go into greater detail about your app. Things like
tutorials, help files, screenshots, usage cases, comments, etc.

As for me, I'm making a multiplayer game. A web frontend is
absolutely necessary. I used YUI and blueprint CSS to try to keep the
pages sane on small and big screen sizes.

I've actually got a lot of responses in my blog, so you might want to
look into that as well.

[android-developers] Re: Website for your app, how important do you feel it is?

2010-08-05 Thread Maps.Huge.Info (Maps API Guru)
I have one for my Radar Now! website called (strangely enough)
http://www.radarnow.net

The site has basic data and screen shots, a map showing where users
are located, statistics about OS's and devices and a change log for
versions. I also use it for some social type content, such as (my)
favorite comments and a list of the most active counties in the US.

The idea behind the favorite comments page is that if people know
that their comments will be read and recognized, they're more likely
to leave glowing comments. Might sound a little off. I think it does.
What they don't know is I print out another list called (my) Least
Favorite comments glue them to small dummies and stick pins in them.

I started tracking the site only last week with Analytics and in that
time about 7,500 users of Android devices went to the site.

Is it important? To promote the app, probably not. To engage users?
Absolutely. For support? Yes.

You can add another dimension to your app by giving it a web presence.

[android-developers] Re: Website for your app, how important do you feel it is?

2010-08-05 Thread metal mikey
It has been pointed out that there's a need for developers of Android
Apps to garner trust in Users potential Users (e.g. Users must trust
the developer to not abuse their private information). I believe that
having a website for an App will help towards that. It shows an extra
effort that the developer has gone to in making a commitment to an
App. Also provides a means to communicate way more information than
can possibly be communicated in the much-too-small App Description on
Android Market.

I've recently launched an App on Android Market that not only uses a
website to help promote it, but also to provide extra features (i.e.
adding that extra dimension as 'Maps.Huge.Info' stated). My App's
website is gotta give it a plug, right?: http://www.snowcell.net

That said, having a website for an App should certainly not be a sole
reason for Users to extend trust to a developer, but it is perhaps one
of many points that can help towards that goal!
