In case people don't know this, you can create a product web site with facebook that you don't have to be a facebook member to see. You do have to have a facebook account yourself, and if someone wants to post or discuss, they have to have accounts. It's a perfectly usable place to share general information about your product. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. (So it's often not done.) 2) It's definately too little to explain why your app needs each listed access-permission. (So not a single app I've seen does that.) 3) There is no way to answer to comments. People often enter bugs or wishes there but never update their comment even month later when a new version already adressed that issue. Also consider making a Facebook page. I've done this for my Zen Timer app and it's been pretty successful: http://www.facebook.com/zentimer I'm finding it more and more difficult to balance the demands of marketing + development + customer support (development is suffering - and it's the only thing that I do well!). So I'm scaling back my website and focusing more on Facebook for now - we'll see how it goes. Oh and why oh why oh why can't someone at Google bump up the 325 char limit? It would probably take all of 5 keystrokes to change this. As it is, it takes away much of the incentive to add new features to an app since you won't be able to explain (or even mention) it to potential customers via the market. I do like what TreKing has out there for his software (http://sites.google.com/site/rezmobileapps/treking) as I think it does add something to the purchase for someone. To market your app, feel free to checkout 'AppFriend for Facebook' on Android Market. It's gotten quite a bit of usage from users and from looking at the stats, some of the apps that users share get quite a few additional 'Likes' as it moves through the network. There is also a link on the app pages that allows users to go to your website. What's nice about this approach is that when a user shares the app info (with comments), their facebook friends will see it on their wall and then they can go to the page and click to open the app description in Android Market. Re: [android-developers] Re: Website for your app, how important do you feel it is?
I don't think a website is the greatest way to promote your app. It's hard to turn a person browsing the internet to install an app to their phone. The barcode method makes it a bit easier, but still the conversion rate isn't that great. However, having a website is pretty necessary in my opinion. If your app does anything interesting at all. I think the best way is to have a site that works both on the mobile device and on a personal computer. This can help you two ways, you can create a community from your 'power' users to help you in refining your app. You can also go into greater detail about your app. Things like tutorials, help files, screenshots, usage cases, comments, etc. As for me, I'm making a multiplayer game. A web frontend is absolutely necessary. I used YUI and blueprint CSS to try to keep the pages sane on small and big screen sizes. (http://diastrofunk.com/sol/) I've actually got a lot of responses in my blog, so you might want to look into that as well.
