I guess it's the same as the Toshiba Folio 100 (which I've played

compared to the Galaxy Tab or the iPad, though not as bad as the even-
cheaper tablets. But that's not an inevitable consequence of the 10
form-factor, as the iPad demonstrates.

I use a Nookcolor, there's no market place yet. However, some people
have reported to get market place working after installing YouTube
app. I tried it and it did not work on mine. Also, many applications
that rely on google account info also do not work. One example is
google reader. NC is good for the price. I wish that someone can
work on gingerbread build for it.

With a little hacking, the market works fine on the g Tablet. There are
some apps that are mysteriously missing from the market, but most of it is

Do you have some detail on what you had to do to get it installed?

By the way, the Samsung Galaxy Tab in Canada *does* have the market

However I have not been able to get my hands on one up here in Canada.

[android-developers] Re: What Tablet would you get

2010-12-09 Thread Howard M. Harte
I have three Android tablets now, Galaxy Tab, Viewsonic gTablet and
Nook Color. The Galaxy Tab is really nice, and definitely has the
best Android integration out of the box. It also has the most
hardware features like dual cameras, 3G, and GPS. The form factor is
nice, but I wish they thinned out the edges a bit, it's kind of
chunky, and is also the most expensive ($600, no contract.)

Next, I bought the Nook Color, rooted it, and like the form factor the
best of all three tablets. When CyanogenMod comes out for NC, it will
be great, but even the stock BN Android is not bad. Since NC can boot
directly from the sdcard, dual booting stock and CM would be really
nice. For the price, this thing is awesome.

Last, I bought the Vewsonic gTablet to debug some native code that was
segfaulting on tegra2. The CPU is great, and I love that it has a USB
host port, but now I'm convinced I'm not a fan of the 10 form
factor. The biggest drawback is easily the display, which has a weird
viewing angle. I can't remember if it was that bad with the stock
software, but I put CM 6.1 on it almost immediately, and the display
looks wonky unless viewed at the proper angle, which ironically seems
to be with the tablet oriented upside down and to a slight angle.
Maybe it is some sort of 3D display, or maybe I need to get new
glasses, but the NC and Galaxy Tab both have beautiful displays.

The Nook Color is the one that I am really enamored with... possibly
because it has a lot of homebrew Android possibilities, but also
because of the price point and form factor. BN did a really good job
on it. And with some rooting it is really a universal reader, working
with BN, Kindle App, and Google Books.

Re: [android-developers] Re: What Tablet would you get

2010-12-07 Thread Jon F Hancock
So the more I use my Viewsonic g Tablet, the more I love it. It does have
some weird issues, but in general, it is fantastic. After using Android and
especially playing Angry Birds on a nice big 10 screen, my phone seems
useless. If I wasn't so concerned about having internet everywhere, I would
switch to a feature phone, and just use the tablet for internet and gaming.

It's also comforting that my main app (LauncherPro Icons) works beautifully
on the higher resolution screen. I want to scream at Google though because
the Google Reader app looks great in the listing activity, then when you go
to actually read a story, it confines itself to a little window the size of
my phone... What is so hard about following the design guidelines of fluid
resizing, Google?

[android-developers] Re: What Tablet would you get

2010-12-05 Thread String
I was digging on the Notion Ink Adam as well, even jumped through the
hoops for the Early Access Program. But then the price stopped me -
$732 (+VAT, here in the UK) for a pre-release device. No thanks, too
rich for my blood. I still like the look of it, but it's going to have
to be REALLY special to justify that price tag. Especially without
Market access.

I picked up a viewsonic g tablet at Sears for $379. The stock ui is
aweful, but with cayanogenmod, it is an amazing device. Modding
instructions are available on xda.

RE: [android-developers] Re: What Tablet would you get

2010-12-04 Thread Ted Neward
I would never buy an Archos device again, ever--I had a terrible experience
with a device I bought from them two years ago, and the customer service was
flat-out inexcusably bad. The general perception was that they just didn't
give a sh*t about the defective device they sold me, and it was my own fault
for having bought it in the first place.

I bought a Tab last week and I'm playing with it--nice device, though I'm
having some problems using it as a WiFi hotspot. Signal is kinda weak, and
it appears to drop after using it for a bit. My only criticism of the device
so far.

Would love to try the Toshiba, but haven't seen it available yet.

What about Archos tablets? Here in France they're less than half the price of
the Galaxy Tab.
