[android-freerunner] Using without simcard

2009-04-25 Thread Dave
Hi all,

Could somebody point me towards instructions on using android without a sim
card (if possible)?

Don't need to make phone calls, just would like to play with the apps and
use wifi.

Have tried a search on koolu forums however it doesn't like "without a sim
card" because the words are too common?

Thanks heaps,
Dave

Well f*** me! GPRS works just fine now, I managed to use the browser
with it.

Well done Michael!

Re: [android-freerunner] Fwd: Re: Michaels images, yesterdays update

2009-02-23 Thread dave

Andreas,

Can't help with GSM, my phone's been playing up for a few days, but then
I left the software in a weird state. When it works it works :)

Wifi key may be possible in wpa_supplicant conf file somewhere under
/system/etc IIRC. I usually enter the wifi key by typing in notepad and
then copy/paste into the wifi box.

HTH.

I have, in the past, had AndNav2 working fine. To test, attach to your
home wireless and stand outside your front door. AndNav should get a fix
and download maps from the internet.

That's as far as I've ever got as I haven't had GPRS working to download
more tiles.

Thanx David for your input, now when i have wlan connection Andnav2 workes.
I also needed to set my dns pointer manually with: ADBHOST=192.168.0.202
adb shell setprop net.dns1 192.168.1.1 Is there any way to set the wlan
encryption key the same way? or config any configuration manually and
upload it with adb push?

One other thing i noticed:

My phone doesnt register with my provider automaticly, i need to go in in
settings-> Wireless controls -> Mobile Networks -> Operator selection,
there i get some fast errormessage, when i select automaticly it registers
to my provider and i can call/recive calls.

* Low sound when calling someone.

Will test more to night and tommorrow. And also, can someone give me a
short howto verify GPS and Andnav2 functionality, i can start it, and

gps

icon is blinking. Shall i be able to see my position? I cant for example
set my Home in settings? Any other useful GPS app available?

Thanx

Re: [android-freerunner] Android Freerunner status, Michael Trimarchi's images

2009-02-22 Thread dave

Andreas -

Wifi keys and other dialog boxes like that can only be filled in by
writing them elsewhere (notepad is a good place), copying (by pressing
on the text until the menu appears), then going into the wifi settings
and pasting .

I don't have that trouble with mp3s personally, but I did get it with
m4a/aac files. It may be that the FRs processor is nearing its limits.

Browser should be fine too

Hi Android frerunner hackers

I was thinking of given you some feedback on my progress so far.

Im now using Michael Trimarchi's images:

uImage-v12.bin
freerunner-v14.jffs2

i have also tried the koolu images but was unable to unlock my simcard so i
didnt get so far with thoose.

Im using Tele2 Comviq GSM in Sweden, phonecalls works, both incoming and
outgoing, sms works, incoming and outgoing. Open wifi networks works, i
have failed to connect to Wep encrypted networks when i am unable to insert
the wep key in the form (No keyboard? shall i input the wepsettings
somewhere else?) I have tried Andnav2 but am unable to retrive any mapinfo,
anything special i need to do to get this to work?

I cant browse with the browser when connected to wifi, anything special i
need to do with that?
I have uploaded a mp3 file and played it in Music, it plays but sound is
choppy, cuts, and after a while the application is nonresponsive.

Let me know also if you need assistance in testing anything, debugging or
testing new patches. Im ready! :-). I can code in Perl, Python, Php, Sql
and systemscripting(sh,bash, ksh), i bought my freerunner on Friday so i
havent read up on which languages you can contribute in yet.

Keep up the good work!!

Br Andreas

Re: [android-freerunner] State of Bluetooth

2009-02-11 Thread dave

some good things came out of this evenings pub meet. I flashed someone
else's phone with v12 (rootfs and kernel) and bt worked.

Reflashed mine, no /dev/socket/dbus

Difference? Qi. I had it, he didn't.. Tried booting mine from NOR and
BT worked. Booting from Qi in NAND didn't.

Qi sucks?

Something is wrong with it anyway.

Re: [android-freerunner] git repository of rild

2009-02-10 Thread dave

That would probably be ok, though it might count as license avoidance

As this is a relatively small community, can we ask the original authors
of the library at issue if they would release itt under GPL3? Or does it
explicitly allow GPL3 use?

Either way, I don't think this is going to go back to google, the
original authors probably don't want commercial entities altering and
closing code.

Personally I do understand the divide between the two major license
types. GPL (and similar) is open and cannot be used without the
derivatives being opened and without the distributors having obligations
to provide their source.

APL, BSD and similar are more about providing source for anyone to use
in any way they like.

Personally, i prefer my (miniscule) contributions stay under the GPL so
that anyone that wants to use them *must* give something back. Without
it we wouldn't have things like the Linksys WRT54 or NSLU2 scenes.

This sort of silliness -- and it matter not who is at fault, or even if
anyone is at fault with the entire licensing debacle -- is the sort of
thing that proves that open-source is really no different from
commercial work. It ends up just feeding the same ultimate societal
leeches -- lawyers.

So, putting aside my total disgust at the concept of duplication of
effort (and bugs and time), and speaking as someone who wishes only to
consume, not author or distribute, can anyone just post a Makefile that
can pull the right code bits from the right places, and let each user
build their own? Or is that illegal too?

Sigh. Somebody tell me how this is any different from an iphone, again,
please? (No, don't -- it was a rhetorical question.)

That doesn't clear the other problem though: rild _is_ APL2, which

Thinking out loud here, maybe the best way out of this is a clean room
implementation of the bits and pieces we need. To make this easier,
someone could take a look a the existing code, and provide a set of
tests that a replacement implementation has to pass to be able to
replace the existing code.

In oder words, do a TDD/BDD implementation between to parties. One
party provides the tests and the other party provides the
implementation.

The resulting code would be best put under the BSD license. In that
way we can use a GPLed library like the one Michael mentioned without
much worries *and* we can also contribute the code back to Google. Of
course, the resulting implementation for the Freerunner (the one using
the GPLed library) would be distributed under the GPL as a whole.
