Re: [Angstrom-devel] SL-C3000 Howto

2007-11-26 Thread Ian Bonham
Marcin was spot on, I'd used the minimalist image, not the console image.
In my desire to get the latest updates to test out, I'd downloaded from the
spitz/20071024 folder and flashed with that. There are only minimalist
images in there with modules as a separate download. Hence I'd had to hack
about a bit to get modules into the minimalist image to get a working
release. I'd also had to hack in the ipkg-cl file and softlink that, and add
in libipkg before I could run a successful update and bring down GPE. (oh,
and create resolv.conf, but that's a bit obvious).
So now I have 2007.9-test-20071024 running on my Spitz fine. Just need to
start reading about Bitbake now as I'd really love to try getting Evolution
running before anything else, or some decent PIM package that will sync with
EGW. That way I can use the Zau and just sync it before I try anything new!
:)

So install older image and use "ipkg update;ipkg upgrade" to get
up-to-date system.

  Sounds good. It's pretty close, but there're few days left in 2007
anyway ;-).

  I propose h4000 & hx4700, I have both on my hands and can do needed
QAing.

  Someone really need to come up with generic installation
instructions suitable for any device. Let it be abstract intro
followed by device-family specific howto's, but having hacky
per-device per-somebody's-likes howtos is plain firefighting.

  I'm without permanent inet these weeks (months?), and this week even
w/o much inet at all ;-(. Still, I hope that stuff will get going. As
long as it is not somebody's personal firefighting and not
multi-vector competing efforts (we don't seem to have any of these),
and we're aim-oriented, it should be ok.

  Yep, no talk about OPIE images release - there're not even enough
test images for different machines, but still I'd like to keep matter
going. So, if there're any organizational issues with setting up OPIE
feeds (of the same status as images - "unsupported"), I'd like to know
them, otherwise, I'm going to post RFC for specific server/HTTP
location when time permits.

  It depends on noone else but people interested in OPIE themselves.
Since all recent talks about OPIE, I still see no new images in
http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/unstable/unsupported-images/ .
So, why ask for something which doesn't have presuppositions for
ready?

   Paul, I saw commits from your name in OE, so I assume you have
commit access. Why not start building and uploading images now?
Pointing finger at myself, with all the lacking Internet I have, I'm
working on other issues, like crating an installation process suitable
for mere user to pursue, and fixing what is official Angstrom GUI
framework now.

Thanks for getting this started.

I'm in posession of

* SL-5500
* SL-5600
* SL-C750
* SL-C3200

I will reserve as much of one full day as necessary for testing images
on these models (probably Friday or Saturday though).

I have no opinion whether to include or exclude Opie, I'll agree with
the majority here.

I have an OSK (and a mistral display for it).

I can test the console images, I'm having trouble flashing the X11
images due to some size issues.

Well at the moment that is not the case - I can only assume that they were
just put under my name in the changelog since (to my knowledge anyway) I
do not have an account. Right now I must rely upon yourself, Michael
(Krelin) and recently Marcin to commit changes for me.

OK. I guess I was waiting for the official Angstrom Opie maintainers to do
these things, but if you are asking me to do them then I am happy to do so
provided I have all the tools.

Cheers,
Paul
