Esto pese al endurecimiento de la política migratoria estadunidense, luego de los atentados. En los primeras 14 semanas del año ya fallecieron 70 mexicanos. Explicó que la mayoría perecieron ahogados en el río o deshidratados en el desierto. La incidencia de decesos, agregó, ubica al desierto, entre Sonora y Arizona, y Laredo y Nuevo Laredo, como el punto fronterizo más peligroso. Destituyen a funcionarios Por separado, el comisionado del Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM), Felipe de Jesús Preciado Coronado, informó que en los pasados 15 meses han sido removidos 900 funcionarios que incurrieron en diversas faltas y delitos. De éstos, 180 fueron despedidos principalmente por agresiones a indocumentados centroamericanos y 12 fueron consignados ante el Ministerio Público por involucrarse con las bandas dedicadas al tráfico de humanos. Por otro lado, la Fundación de Asistencia Rural Legal de California, organismo reconocido internacionalmente por su labor de defensa de las garantías de los indocumentados, condenó que el gobierno mexicano no se pronunciara en contra de los operativos de control migratorio estadunidenses en la frontera sur de California, durante la reunión de la Comisión de Derechos Humanos de la ONU. La directora del organismo, Claudia Smith, indicó que en las sesiones de trabajo de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU), en Ginebra, Suiza, los diplomáticos mexicanos expusieron su posición acerca de la situación de los derechos humanos que impera en diversas regiones del mundo, como Cuba e Irak, pero no dijeron nada sobre la problemática que enfrentan los aspirantes a indocumentados en la franja fronteriza México-Estados Unidos.
