I assume you are looking at what's available on sourceforge.net, which is 
aoetools-32?

Coraid bundles a newer version, aoetools-33, with their driver.

Look at Coraid's changelog --- there's certainly ongoing maintenance.

I haven't tried kvblade, which according to my understanding isn't super 
stable.  vblade has been working out great for me.

So the last release for aoetools was 2010-09-21, and the last release 
for kvblade was 2006-10-02.  Are these public projects still maintained? 
Is there any progress/maintenance on kvblade?

It is pretty much feature complete and there are no showstopper bugs that I am
aware of. So there hasn't been much work done on it. I'm don't know what
Coraid's long-term plans for it are.
