[apple-crop] FSMA vs. GAP: Overlap and where to begin?

2016-02-26 Thread Peter Werts
Hi All,

Has anyone tried to figure out the exact overlap between the US FDA Food
Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and GAP certifications offered by the USDA,
Primus and others?

I'm interested in finding or making a checklist that outlines what else an
apple grower who is ALREADY GAP certified needs to do to be in compliance
with FSMA.

This NSAC flow chart can help you determine if you are exempt:

Any thoughts?

[apple-crop] MaluSim Carbohydrate Model for non NEWA users

2015-05-05 Thread Peter Werts
Hi All,

I am looking for the MaluSim model in a format that does not require access
to a NEWA station. The closest NEWA or EnviroWeather station is over a 100
miles from several growers we work with. We would like to use the MaluSim
carbohydrate model but cannot find any information on how to manually
calculate carbohydrate loads and balances using our on-farm weather data.
Does an Excel spreadsheet exist that would allow us to input weather
parameters from our on-farm stations? The NEWA stations make it very easy,
but all the articles discuss that accuracy of weather data is essential for
this to work and I am concerned about how appropriate it would be to use
carbohydrate predictions from over 100 miles away.

Phil Schawllier's Predicting Fruitset Model spreadsheet is perfect,
http://extension.umass.edu/fruitadvisor/resources/clements-corner! Now I
just need an Excel sheet that can do the same for the MaluSim carbohydrate
model.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,

Peter

Re: [apple-crop] Sprayer Calibration Between Training Styles

2014-06-06 Thread Peter Werts
Hi,

As travel speeds increase, this may increase turbulence, increasing
potential for drift, you also may not like the coverage you get. Sounds
like Nick has older plantings and newer high density, so a slower speed may
be needed on the older trees. We completed spray coverage analysis with
water sensitive cards last year in a tall-spindle orchard that was being
sprayed at 4mph and every-other-row. Results showed variable coverage on
the row being sprayed and no coverage on the opposite row, especially on the
back sides of the leaves.

Dr. Andrew Landers, Cornell, discusses the role of travel speed and fan
speed to achieve spray penetration and coverage in his book, Effective
Vineyard Spraying A Practical Guide for Growers. This resource should be
on everyone's shelf.

Thanks,

Peter

Hi!

adjusted the gear speed so the GPA would match the free standing
block, tractor speed was way too fast ~4 MPH.

Why is 4MPH (6,5km/h) too fast? hills?

it's quite common to have forward speeds of 7,3km/h in tall spindle (4,5MPH)

[apple-crop] dogwood borer management with Assail

2014-02-06 Thread Peter Werts
Hi All,

I have a grower who has had an ongoing issues with dogwood borer and would
like to identify an alternative to chlorpyrifos. Does anyone have
experience using Assail (acetamiprid) as a trunk drench to manage dogwood
borer infestations in burr knots on Mark rootstocks? How effective have
those treatments been? Assail 30 SG is labeled for a trunk drench.
Mounding soil over the burr knots is not economically viable considering the
acreage. Chlorpyrifos can be used up to 28-days before harvest for dogwood
borer and would like to see that only as an option if we can't identify
lower-risk alternatives.

Thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Peter
