Re: [arch-general] Mailing list rename
Holy crap people... this got way out of hand. We're discussing a footer. a footer This isn't rocket surgery. We either have it, or we don't. I turned it off on this list as a trial. Frankly, I like it simply because it's 4 less lines I have to remove when editing quotes. I do like the archive link there (getting to the headers via gmail is harder), but it's not critical to me. For the record, I DO believe that large signatures are annoying in the same way that a 4 line footer is annoying
Re: [arch-general] Change kernel version or module dir at bootprompt?

If you really need a backup kernel you can package a working one and install it side by side to the one from [core]. Another nice feature might be packaging the kernel from the install cd. It contains a complete rescue system within the initrd. -- archlinux.de

On Sat, December 1, 2007 04:46, Gerhard Brauer wrote: Hello, i've searched a while and found nothing. And AFAIK there isnt't an chance to do this. But maybe one of you know a trick, a magic... Is it possible to change either the kernel version (what uname -r says) or the location of the kernel modul dir at boottime? I think about an easy solution to backup an arch kernel with it's modules. But since the kernel version is fix and releated to the module dir one could not simply copy /lib/modules/foo.bar to ex. /lib/modules/foo.bar-backup. Anyone knows a trick? the kernel version is also embedded into the individual modules, so you'd have to modify the kernel and every module. You might be able to do some ugly sed trickery, but I really discourage it -- you're asking for trouble.. and it probably won't work. For a 2.6.22 to 2.6.23 type change though, yes you could just backup the kernel and modules before upgrading, upgrade, rename the kernel vmlinuz and put them back again -- though they'd then be out of pacman's control. Why would you want to do something like this anyway?
[arch-general] Kernel Module Package Guidelines
I recently posted a feature request for the aufs dependency on aufs-utils to be removed (because the latter is not necessary for using aufs). The bug was closed by the maintainer because This is the standard way of packaging modules in Arch: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_Module_Package_Guidelines;. Of course he was right: ... make sure nvidia depends on nvidia-utils ... It's maybe a rather small point, but to me this requirement seems a bit excessive. I would suggest rephrasing this to: ... if nvidia-utils is required for the use of nvidia, make sure nvidia depends on nvidia-utils ...
[arch-general] Old version of gnome-system-tools in [unstable]
Hi, There is a very old version of gnome-system-tools (and system-tools-backends) package in [unstable]. A newer one is already available in [community]. Would it not be better to remove the older one? What would be the procedure to do that? I tried to contact the packager but i got no response so far. Thanks. -- []'s Hugo Doria http://hdoria.archlinux-br.org GNU/Linux user #359340 - http://counter.li.org
