[arch-general] Can't ssh to vServer running ArchLinux

2009-09-11 Thread Johannes Held
Hello,

after my latest update of my vServer, I wanted to ssh into this box.
But I'm given this error message and the ssh hangs:

$ ssh bitterblume.com
PTY allocation request failed on channel 0

Is there any chance to resque that?
I've always did a copy of the old kernel-image. Perhaps I can get the support
to boot my machine by hand and change the grub line ..

That can be. I don't know what's been updated. That update was one or two weeks
ago. Unfortunately I don't know exactly what packages are updated - but I bet
it's something with that change in tty and inittab..

Thanks for that link.

As the article says:
Due to severe system breakages if this file is not updated, this change will
 be automatically handled by pacman.
Unfortunately, I didn't check the update. We didn't alter these files anyway.

The hardest part will be to fix these file on my vServer - as I don't have any
access to it. Perhaps the support can help me …

That wont help right now, but one should not rent a server without a serical
console __and__ a rescue system which can boot from network.

Others might disagree but I prefer to update more regualry even on my server.
This way you don't get a lot of problems at once. And of course keep an eye on
the news.

Jeah, you're right with that points.
All I can say: It's a vServer mainly to play and fool around
Why don't you think that the support cant help here?

I'm doing both things. But I simply didn't expect problems with this update ...

No idea why it's there, looks like an unpacked package. I deleted it
from gerolde, but I guess it will be back in a while: gerolde rsyncs
 from sigurd.

There are still .PKGINFO and a .INSTALL file in the community repo. Does
anyone know how this could happen?

Looks like someone untarred a package in that directory.

Looks like an upstream feature :
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13967

I haven't read it in detail but it looks like it87 was superceeded by
other modules. In my case, asus_atk0110.
