I then had to adjust the syslinux.cfg to point it at the name of the usbkey - but I will try the dd method and see if that works better - thought that will be tomorrow now as it is late here in the UK now. Thanks - I will report back when I have had a chance to try the dd method. -- mike c

[arch-general] Using install dual iso 2012-09-07 - graphics issue?
I have made a bootable usbkey with the archlinux-2012.09.07-dual.iso file but having tried to boot it, both on an Inspiron 530s and also a Samsung Q35 netbook, there is a blue "graphics" screen but it does not stop and offer me the choice of i686 or x86_64 but carries straight on to boot to the normal prompt. So I can't choose which architecture to use for the install. Does anyone know a workaround to be able to get to choose which of 32 or 64 bit to boot for the install? Or is there a problem with this new install media on some hardware? I have done quit a bit of reading but not seen this issue mentioned in any of the arch wiki or other google searches. Thanks -- mike c
Re: [arch-general] linux-lts question before reinstall
You can add linux-lts to the pacstrap command, but it will install both linux and linux-lts. This is perfectly fine, since you can specify which kernel you want in syslinux.cfg. You may then remove linux if you choose to do so. However, rather than reinstalling the entire system, consider simply installing linux-lts and optionally removing linux, modifying /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg, adding lts to the kernel and initrd filenames, e.g. vmlinuz-linux-lts and initramfs-lts.img. This should give you a working system that uses the lts kernel without reinstalling from scratch. ~Kyle
[arch-general] linux-lts question before reinstall
When I do a system install, can I add linux-lts to the pacstrap command line and have the installer prevent other less desireable linux kernels from being installed? --- jude Adobe fiend for failing to Flash

Dont worry about your reply ideas and comments you are the height of politeness compared with some on the lists not just this one either so dont worry I have compared this machine with the laptop that is similar processor ect and same partitioning layout , i can see no difference between the 2 apart from the actual UUID of the partitions i will have a play with some of those suggestions shortly see what happens . I have a feeling it may well be related to the latest util-linux and a another that was changed at the big update i did . Watch this space . I do remember a glitch when upgrading a while ago that caused a similar issue. Until I found the solution, I just added mount / -orw,rebind in /etc/rc.local That caused my / partition to be rw as soon as the boot sequence is completed but still caused my some issues during the daemon start up. After a while I moved that line to /etc/rc.sysinit so it would execute before the daemons. Still a while later I discovered what the problem was, and I think it was in /etc/fstab, something really obvious, in hind sight but I cannot recall at the moment. Would you mind attaching your fstab? Maybe seeing it will trigger my memory. Andy
