So it uses alsa. In order to get this to work, you need to configure alsa to use pulseaudio. This is particularly easy, as the necessary configuration is the only content found in the pulseaudio-alsa package. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio#Flash_Content -- Curtis Shimamoto sugar.and.scruffy [at] gmail.com

No not all Realtek chipsets are created equal. My issues were with some crazy latency any time I tried to do anything. Once it started loading something, likea web page for instance, it was fine. But getting to that point was just really sluggish. The first time I used it was when I got my Thinkpad in mid 2012, and it was so horribly painful it was awful. It was so bad that it would actually case other devices on the network to lose their connection sometimes. I am not sure how or why this would happen, but it wouldn't if I were not connected. The second time, was just a couple weeks ago when I had to have the mobo replaced. I now have the Lenovo wifi whitelist back, so I had to resort to the Realtek. It was much much better than the first time, but when I got an Intel to stick in the machine, it was like night and day. This particular module (the rtl8192ce) I see people having issues with all the time on the forums. So I know that the pain is not mine alone. I have not had the chance to try other Realtek cards, but you are not the first to tell me that there are others out there that work well. Still this chipset seems to be particularly common today, so I just wanted to throw this out there. I think it was the rtl8188/8192? I don't know specifically w/o putting the card back into the machine. -- Curtis Shimamoto sugar.and.scruffy [at] gmail.com

My experience with the 8192 was poor only because the drivers were in staging until the 3.0 kernel release. I switched to the 8188 in my netbook and the 8171 (maybe, my memory is failing me on that one) on my main laptop. Not all realtek chipsets are equal...

Re: [arch-general] Broadcom B43 problems
There are few steps with can help you trobleshoot this: 1. try to connect with plain wpa_supplicant. Kill networkmanager, wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd and everything else; create configuration file: network={ ssid="$WIRELESS_SSID" psk="$WIRELESS_PASSPHRASE" } Save it as "wpa_supplicant.conf", start wpa_supplicant: "wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -c/home/magnus/wpa_supplicant.conf", try to fetch configuration from dhcp: "dhcpcd wlan0". This way nm won't mess with wifi chipset. 2. you can also load b43 module with "verbose=3 hwtkip=0 nohwcrypt=1" or other options (check "modinfo b43"). 3. maybe latest kernel just have issues with this chip, try linux-lts. -- Krzysztof Warzecha

It is only printed when 1) no initramfs or an invalid initramfs is attached 2) the kernel manages to mount the root partition 3) no init binary is found If a valid initramfs (containing a valid executable /init) is attached, then the kernel will execute that an *never* try to mount the root partition and find /init on its own. Thus, it will not print that message. Now let's assume that you didn't attach a valid initramfs. Since the Arch kernel contains no hard drive support and no filesystem support whatsoever, it is impossible for it to mount a file system and the panic message will *always* be "unable to mount root filesystem on [...]" If you did attach a valid initramfs (as Arch does by default), then the error messages would be different and you would always get an emergency shell if something goes wrong. Even if you ignore everything and exit all emergency shells that pop up, you will get a different panic message: "attempting to kill init" In conclusion, it is entirely impossible that you get the error message you quoted if you use the Arch kernel. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

I had a similar failure a couple of days ago; after a (too long delayed) system update, my system hung on boot. The fix was relatively easy; boot a rescue system and rebuild the initramfs. In hindsight i could have prevented the problem by taking care of the warnings pacman reported. The entire problem was caused by me rebooting too quickly. So here's a friendly suggestion to check pacman's logs after each upgrade. Most of the time it'll fine, but especially when it's been a while, it's important to check it. Hope that helps. Mvg, Guus

[arch-general] Question about mariadb replacing mysql
With the move to mariadb I have the following situation: I am not explicitely running mysqld so checking the status with systemctl shows it is inactive. However I am running KDE as my desktop. After doing the suggested install after ensuring that mysqld is stopped: pacman -S mariadb libmariadbclient mariadb-clients and accepting the install of these packages with removal of mysql equivalents, I then find that there is a private instance of mysql running by the KDE desktop: ps -eaf | egrep mysql mike 660 657 0 Mar23 ?00:00:42 /usr/bin/mysqld --defaults-file=/home/mike/.local/share/akonadi/mysql.conf --datadir=/home/mike/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ --socket=/home/mike/.local/share/akonadi/socket-home1/mysql.socket mike 9747 761 0 13:39 pts/300:00:00 egrep mysql So does any expert know whether a mysql_upgrade is necessary for KDE and if so how does one go about doing that upgrade? I tried many times without success so I abandoned the idea and bought a new WiFi card for my laptop. Not helpful I know..

[arch-general] strange behaviour of pacman, what did I do?
Hi I was updating an archroot, created with mkarchroot to play with lxc. I thought following would work but it was doing something else altogether [root@bheem lxc]# pacman -Su -c /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ --root=$PWD/server1 Cache directory: /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ Packages to keep: All locally installed packages Do you want to remove all other packages from cache? [Y/n] ^C Interrupt signal received I think I lost a few packages during this because following command lead to a 30MB worth of download. [root@bheem lxc]# pacman -Su --cachedir=/var/cache/pacman/pkg/ --root=$PWD/server1 What did pacman do the first time? The man page does not have bare -c option and it wasn't -Sc where it started cleaning the packages(or was it?) And just to be sure.. I wanted to run pacman on the host again.. and eh? I lost my synced dbs? Thats strange.. [root@bheem lxc]# pacman -Syu :: Synchronizing package databases... error: core.db appears to be truncated: 3990/0 bytes error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirrors.kernel.org : Failed error: core.db appears to be truncated: 3990/0 bytes error: core.db appears to be truncated: 3990/0 bytes error: core.db appears to be truncated: 3990/0 bytes error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirrors.easynews.com : Resolving timed out after 1 milliseconds core is up to date 0.0 B 0.00B/s 00:00 [-] 0% extra 1416.8 KiB 205K/s 00:07 [#] 100% community 1917.7 KiB 206K/s 00:09 [#] 100% :: Starting full system upgrade... there is nothing to do -- Regards Shridhar

Yes, I installed archlinux on 16 of march, type pacman -Syu on 22, the filesystem was ext4 I get the package before and after but I found nothing, even downgrading didn't fix the problem KR, Dany
