Have you tried changing your default shell the "old fashined way"?

$ chsh /usr/bin/zsh

Then re login.

Hello fellow Arch Linux users,

I recently tried to use USB tethering, without success. The interface just won't
come up.

I enabled the usb tethering on the phone, but ip link didn't show any new

Anyone can point me on how to debug this further?

I did not like that the problem sorted itself out. I will test it, if the

[arch-general] Installing Archlinux on a Panasonic toughbook U1

Since my thread on the forums did not got very much attraction here it goes,

I have a Panasonic Touchbook CF-U1  for those who not to care to read the link
its a rugged small pc with an Intel Atom in it.
The machine will have 2 main uses:
- Replace the laptop on my garage, (i like to mess with mechanic stuff on my
spare time, mostly offroad machines) it will be used to view some pdf (service
manuals and whatnot)
and use tunning software and logic analizyer so on, i would be running it on an
external keyboard.
- Onboard computer on my offroad truck, I plan to use the GPS for navigation
proposes and as data logger of the engine Electronic managemnte system.
And maybe some light work on those sunny days where I feel like working outside
(have you tried using your laptop on the sunlight ? it sucks).
I am a tiller wm lover (DWM and AwesomeWM) but I don't think a tller would be
the most idicated, I would love a mix of normal wm with a touchscreen friendly
interface.
Something like the Asus EEE pc 701 (the first one) had that modded Ice VW menu.
I did not tried to install the system yet, but I started the live disk, and
these are my first toughts:
- Wireless works out of the box
- Fn key does not work (extremely necessary)
- Dual battery leds do not work, it does not show which battery is using, it
shows the led that is connected to the AC power, the batterie management seems
to work fine tough.
- The accessorie keys do not work, altough I think i can fix that with
setkeycodes, not really important right now.
I will use full system encryption according to the wiki, just because I want
to, that should be a problem.
I want to collect as much information as possible before tackling the
installation.
Please drop your opinions or links to any information you might think its useful
Some links:
http://www.emperorlinux.com/mfgr/panasonic/ant/ - A company that seels this

Re: [arch-general] Ruby gem packages in Arch

2014-01-13 Thread Alfredo Palhares
I agree with you, some ruby-packages just are a royal pain in the arse to
maintain.
Sometimes i wish I just when with rbenv[1] and call it a day. I still have some
packages
that use the old naming convention.

But like you said the worst scenerio is to deal with multiple versions, like
one fact you need
to update an gem, but packages that depend on it need an older version of it,
so now you have to
have 2 versions of that gem.

It can be done, we just need more man power to put quality packages.

Also, I would like to have a tool to check the AUR packages version agains the
rubygems so we can
them more easily updated, has anyone written such a script ?

[arch-general] Super weird dd problem.

2013-06-09 Thread Alfredo Palhares
Hello,

So I was creating a archlinux usb bootable drive:

[root@masterkorp-laptop Downloads]# dd bs=4M if=archlinux-2013.06.01-dual.iso
of=/dev/sdb
130+1 records in
130+1 records out
548405248 bytes (548 MB) copied, 0.964976 s, 568 MB/s

I was like WOW, this was too fast! But nothing ever gets written to
the pen drive.
To add to the weird factor, a dd to dev/sdb1 (partition) works as it
should, slowly. But then ofcourse the iso gets unbootable.

The md5sum on the iso is correct.
I tried with diferent pen drives.

Please, any suggestions is welcome.

Unfortunaly i have no choice. xf86-video-ati does not support my Ati 7750.

Thanks for your help, you pointed me to sometign i could investage.
So after some time here is the solution

aticonfig --set-pcs-val=MCIL,DigitalHDTVDefaultUnderscan,0

As root, this persist between reboots, but not between driver upgrades (not
tested myself
yet).

Another option can be adding this to your $HOME/.xprofile

aticonfig --set-dispattrib=dfp5,positionX:0
aticonfig --set-dispattrib=dfp5,positionY:0
aticonfig --set-dispattrib=dfp5,sizeX:1920
aticonfig --set-dispattrib=dfp5,sizeY:1080

Being dfp5 the name of your devive. also adjusting the resolution of course.

[arch-general] Screen Scaling Issues

2012-08-08 Thread Alfredo Palhares
Hello, i am having some problems setting up Xorg correctly.

I have a ATI Radeon 7750 codename "Cape Verde"
VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Cape Verde PRO
[Radeon HD 7700 Series]

I have a problem when i start X, on 1920x1080 the screen is not fully used, i
get some black border
all around the screen.
To "fix" this i have to open amdcccle and in the DTV(1) section -> Adjustments
and on
Scalling Options i have to move the bar from 0 to zero again.

This does solve the problem, but it does not persist between reboots (does not
change Xorg.conf at all
even as root). Is it possible to set this as an option on the xord.conf ? I
probably does, but I
failed to find the name of that option.

As attachemnt goes my catalyst config file

Any sugestions are welcomne.

Hello,

Sweet project, i am making something like your local repo in lua,
but mine will have some build options and keep a clean PKGBUILD dir by warping

Good luck with yours, but i think having langueges on this type of app is
unecessary,
since is almost certain that most of this app userbase will have suficient
english.
I personally just prefer english (i am portuguese) over my native language. I
dont even bother
making a portuguese version, its just unnecessery work, instead i prefer a
solid english that
everyone can understand.

On your app is even more evident that english should the only language, since
you target
Arch Linux users and all of them need to know english to at least read the wiki
and man pages
properly.

I once tried to make translations but it only became a mess to maintain when
everyone just
prefers english. In the world of today we all should be talking the same
language already.

Anyways, this is just my opinion. You can (and you should, we have the right to
disagre) take
a diferent view on this, anyways i wish you luck.

Yeah i agree, you should have carefull with that. I never transplant a the /etc
of a machine
i only use it as detailed backup. Whenever i have another machine i create a
new /etc repository
for it, copying manually the files i need because i dont even want the history
back. You could
do it with git using root and those files would be owned by root, you just need
to adjust the
ownerwhip like you set when you copy a file manually.
In my home repo i do that and keep a branch for each computer, but on /etc
repos not just because
they often have very diferent distros and objectives.

A very simple solution would use netcfg profiles for your home network and
connect to the NAS server with the POST_UP= param[1].

This would make things easier for you because you will not have to connect to
the NAS
on every boot (since you said its a laptop and i assume you use it on other
places
than your home) and only connect to the netowk you desire, either by wireless
or wired.
You can also add the PRE_DOWN to disconnect of your mount safely before
disconnecting the
network.

If you desire you can set the network to start on boot (by simply adding the
profile name to
your rc.conf) but this will make your boot a little slower if you're not on
your home (like
connecting to your NAS does).

I too keep my /etc directory under version control. I have a a detached
worktree.
Wich enables me to have the .git directory outside of /etc. The process is
simple:

You create a bare repo:
$ mkdir etc.git
$ git init --bare
Now lets congigure it to chek the files elsewhere:
$ git config core.worktree /etc
And export these vars to you current session
$ export GIT_DIR=/path/to/etc.git
$ export GIT_WORK_TREE=/etc

Tip here a script[1] easy to work it. Just rember to run it with "." or
"source"
*not* with "sh" since it open another bash session and kills it when script is
done.

Now you would be able to git add and git commit in your etc while keeping it
clean. :)

> I have seen the package etckeeper and it does not seem to really fully
> be setup to work with pacman. Both AUR packages are very outdated.
etckeeper doesn't really fit pacman cause pacman doesn't merge files
automatically, only
apt does that (if you silly enough to configure it to do that :p ). Also
etckeeper commits
all the files in /etc wich makes quite dummy commits. They not really
resetable...
I use use it on debian server only as the last resource.

The Arch way is quite simpler, every time you merge a pacnew or add a feature
to a config file
you commit it and keep the same workflow as a normal code repo. Much simpler.

> Would I just be best off just copying the ones I change and then push

Well this is kinda hard to do (believe me i tried) Also having the .git on /etc
and other dirs like
$HOME is quite anoying since i get the (branch) in red on my bash prompt[2].
