Why? There is no such file in any Arch Linux package.
Also, the option name is SSL_CERT_FILE.
All you should need is 'ca-certificates' and SSL_CERT_DIR pointing
at /etc/ssl/certs.

Are you doing this via ssh? In that case gpg-agent/pinentry often cause

There is no _system gnupg directory_.
pacman uses its own instance for package verification and usually
there's no need to ever fiddle with that (and in that case, use
'pacman-key').

I also never had a /root/.gnupg, no idea what you did there.

Most problems with keyserver operations are due to the fact that Arch
upgraded from GnuPG 2.0 to 2.1 at some point and many people (me
included) never got the memo about dirmngr.conf.

Yeah, we know already, see Ralf's mail.
But since this wasn't the first time this has happened, perhaps one of
us Claws users should have opened a bug report about it.
And perhaps "flow" could try using UTF-8 next time, for a change.

As for the original issue:
No idea, but Google is full of similar issues for "crda" and "country
97". And I don't think this is going any further unless you tell exactly
what wifi adapter you have (from dmesg and/or lspci), what's the access
point, where you purchased both, what band (2,4/5 GHz) and channel you
have configured, and what the country setting should be (one mail you
wrote "JP", the next it was "US").
I'd strongly suggest you go over
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_network_configuration#Respecting_the_regulatory_domain
and perhaps try the part about setting the country via cfg80211 options
in modprobe.conf.

You can't suppress the logging with journald.

No, that means you're setting those ports to "IDE" / "Legacy" /
"Compatibility" mode.
There might be another option labelled "RAID", activating the
software/pseudo-RAID firmware in the motherboard's BIOS, but you'll
want to select "AHCI". It's what everybody not running the latest
PCIe/M.2 NVMe SSD cards should be using.
Also, run 'lsmod | grep ahci' on your old server; in case it's loaded
you'll have the least trouble switching mainboards because it's the
most compatible standard.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I've seen desktop HDDs with way over 5 Power_On_Hours (and
server disks running six figures) but it's depending on usage,
handling, temperatures and possibly a whole lot more. See
https://www.backblaze.com/hard-drive.html for some stats.

The things I look at first in smartctl outputs (besides "PASSED") are
self-tests and sector defects:
- run 'smartctl -t short' and 'smartctl -t long' (expect to wait 2h/TB)
- 'smartctl -A /dev/sdX | grep Sector' should show zeros

For hard disks running continously I'd recommend setting up smartd.

I know what you're referring to, but your mails are sometimes really
hard to follow. And reading that bug (or knowing sudo) it's pretty
obvious that "nopasswd" played no role here.

> Before posting my bug report I searched for sudo and gksudo bug
> reports, but none were shown.

Some Flyspray tips: I usually check "Search in comments", "Search
details" and "All Statuses" when searching and then sort
chronologically (ID/Opened/Last Edited). Also, in this case 'gksu'
would've been the proper package name. But as that package didn't get
touched for three weeks, the most likely culprit had to be sudo anyway.

The time when I was active all day on bbs/irc/wiki giving free support
is long ago (2006-9), but I think the general consensus had always
been "bug first, talk later" ... dunno how others think about that
nowadays.

Then your system has other issues. Read

The current perl 5.22 provides perl-scalar-list-utils=1.41, see

A little fiddling with 'pacman -Qql util-linux' and 'ldd' reveals that
the only tools linked to (lib)systemd are 'logger', 'lslogins' and
'uuidd'.

Aside from that: Yes, some packages do have too broad dependencies
(e.g. systemd instead of libsystemd) and it certainly didn't help
that udev became part of systemd, but in the end the train we're on
drove off long ago, so until systemd's successor arrives on the scene
it's probably best to accustom yourself to it and test it until all
the bugs and edge cases are accounted for.

Re: [arch-general] pacman mirrorlist update

2015-06-18 Thread Jens Adam
Hi Francis,

no idea.

I tend to ignore mirrorlist updates and use the website generator
from time to time, no real schedule:
https://www.archlinux.org/mirrorlist/?country=all&protocol=https&ip_version=6&use_mirror_status=on
The single mirror I'll then pick from that list offers a good
compromise between its score and hop count/speed (not using any tools).

But just look at what has changed and decide for yourself:

The information is in /usr/lib/systemd/system/shadow.*
It's a daily OneShot service (replacing a daily cronjob from
pre-systemd-times) running 'pwck -r' and 'grpck -r', so run these
commands manually and see what they're complaining about.

I can't explain that - because there were no such claims or links in

You only run 'locale-gen' after editing '/etc/locale.gen'.
'/etc/locale.conf' has nothing to do with that.

This isn't about downgrading or rebuilding, but rather about sub-par
information. If you're upgrading a bunch of packages (your usual -Syu)
with 'pam' being one of many and it's not echoing any hint or warning
about a soname change, well, duh. PAM is such an essential library
that I wouldn't bother with identifying which services and programs
need to be reloaded, but rather simply reboot. I overlooked it too,
until I discovered I couldn't unlock xscreensaver.

I went looking through

and it seems to be a very rare occasion that a (.0)-1 kernel package

This clearly indicates a hardware/kernel problem, so I don't know why
people are suggesting to paste random config snippets that won't solve
anything.

Simple googling will produce dozens of similar problems, most without
solution.

My guess: Your card reader (which one? lspci/lsusb/dmesg? laptop type and
age?) or its firmware is simply too old to recognize the card.

If a reboot didn't fix it (for unloading/blacklisting nouveau), I'd say
post a bug report so that nvidia-304xx-lts gets rebuilt.

For that's what it seems to be, looking at the last bug about "symbol
node_data" and comparing the build dates of linux-lts and the different
nvidia packages.

Don't "suspect". Especially when you have little to no experience with
server software it's paramount to check the logs. Even when at first you
don't understand what's getting logged, it's important there are logfiles
in the first place.

> The Postfix was package was installed as a dependancy of something I
> installed but the help files seem to me to require a sound
> understanding of e-mail systems and their jargon which I don't have.

Right, don't treat email as some minor dependency; a proper mailserver
setup takes its time, probably moreso than any wiki, CMS or other web
thingie.

The easiest route would probably mean to install a minimal MTA providing
/usr/bin/sendmail, like 'msmtp-mta' or 'nullmailer', and to configure it
to forward mails through some existing mail account of yours.
You might need to tweak the envelope sender address of the generated
mails on your server or test with several different mail accounts as some
providers don't forward mails from external domains, but all that is
still way simpler than hosting your own Postfix.

But in case you also need/want to _receive_ emails ... well, then there's
no way around to learn at least the basics of Postfix/SMTP/DNS/etc.

They have nothing to do with each other, so you don't "combine" them.

'NoUpgrade' is intended for local files (that are not specified in a
'backup' array in a package) which should never be overwritten by pacman.
In 8 years with Arch I don't think I've ever used that option; it's
usually only a matter of hours/days from filing a bug and convincing the
maintainer to consider something as config/'backup' file to a new pkg.

'HoldPkg' is kind of a last resort measure to keep you from doing
something really stupid and only concerns the package removal process.

With what you're trying to achieve, 'IgnorePkg' is the only thing to
consider.
