Re: [arch-general] Wifi challenge with new Lenovo Yoga C740
Hi Leo, did you check "ip l" when booting the arch live image, to see if the interface is really not detected? Did you try unblocking it with rfkill? Maybe there is a hardware switch on your device, or a key combination with fn + f8 or similar? Otherwise, it might be helpful if you'd provide the output of lspci and lsusb, so we can check what the exact wifi model is. Also something like dmesg|grep network or dmesg|grep wifi might be helpful :) If Ubuntu has working wifi, it should be possible with Arch as well :) Greetings, Lukas from Germany

[arch-general] PC build for hardware video acceleration
Dear community, I want to build a new CPU-focused Arch Linux PC. No requirements for GPU, except for H.265 4K decode, in decent profiles (whatever that means). What hardware is best supported by libraries like VA-API and VDPAU? Are there other relevant libraries? Which libraries are still maintained and up-to-date, which are open source? I see three options right now: 1. High-end Intel CPU (e.g. i9-9900K) w/ integrated HD 630 GPU, or 2. CPU w/o iGPU (e.g. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2920X) + dedicated, low-end AMD GPU (e.g. Radeon RX 560) 3. CPU w/o iGPU and low-end NVidia GPU (e.g. GTX 1050) I couldn't find out which setup works best using the wiki and other sources. Maybe anyone could point me to the right direction? What hardware is recommended for good H.265 4K playback on GPU? Thanks in advance, kind regards, L.
Re: [arch-general] External monitors are no longer detected (Intel graphics)
There are *some* issues with intel gpu's and recent kernels. I can't use multiple monitors in most of the cases as the i915 module misinterpret possible resolutions, for example. Also, I remember some issue with external monitors on this list not long ago: https://lists.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-general/2019-June/046539.html Even if the OP suspected a faulty HDMI port, this might still be related.

[arch-general] vsftpd only works without seccomp
Hi, I've been using vsftpd successfully with implicit SSL several months ago. Now I wanted to use it again (same config file), but it didn't work, clients reported SSL errors. [arch-general] RAID10 + dmcrypt/LUKS + ext4: expanding?
Hi everyone, I want to setup a couple of drives using RAID10 with mdadm. On top of /dev/md0, I want to setup one large dmcrypt/LUKS encrypted ext4 volume. As Arch wiki reads, this seems to be possible. But what about expanding that volume later on? RAID#Format_the_RAID_Filesystem recommends calculating the stripe_width value for ext4 based on the number of data disks[0]. When adding a new disk, the number of data disks would increase by one, and expanding both the dmcrypt/LUKS and the ext4 layer should be possible - but what about the stripe width_value? Does it need to be updated? Should it be updated? Is it possible to update the stripe_width value afterwards? Encryption is a must for me, and having the space accessible in one big chunk instead of individual disks would allow more efficient usage and is therefore important for me. So it would be really nice to get some information on this. Thanks in advance! Regards, L. Rose [0]: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/RAID#Example_3._RAID10.2Cfar2

Thanks N Of course you can. Use a partitioning tool (e.g. gparted) from a live USB Stick (e.g. Knoppix) and delete the Windows partition. Everything on the Windows-Partition will be deleted! Then move the / and /home-partitions on your disk so that the free space is next to the partition you want to merge it with (if necessary). Then resize the / or /home-partition to fill the entire free space. Make sure to have a backup of your data, because data loss may occur if failures happen while modifying the partition map or moving the data. Also prepare that this process may take several hours depending of the size of your data and the speed of the disk. Do never interrupt this process, since data loss will be guranteed. Regards, Lukas

I used it to connect a Raspberry Pi to my university network using 802.11X. As wpa_supplicant is not included in the arch install iso (I guess) you'd probably want to download the required pacman packages to a usb drive through another machine and then install those packages using pacman within the arch linux install machine. This is best done following article [0], as it watches for dependencies. Probably your university has instructions on how to connect to 802.11X Ethernet using linux command line, mine does. These are usually pretty convenient, since they include all the specific settings for your LAN. [arch-general] Pacman: Remove unneded dependencies
Hi, I know, this is probably a very common question, but I couldn't find any information on the pacman wiki article about that, so I have to ask. How can I uninstall all packages on my system, which have been installed as a dependency, and aren't needed any longer? (Because I've uninstalled the dependent package or because the dependent package no longer depends on that dependency) I've read about pacman -Qe, but this lists packages I've explicitly installed and don't want to remove. And please, don't just point to the wiki article, I've checked that already. Thanks in advance, Lukas signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

[arch-general] Apple Super Drive and Arch Linux?
Hi, has anyone used the Apple Super Drive external DVD writer with Arch Linux yet? You need to send some magic byte sequence to enable it. The method [0] has worked for me on all debian-based distributions I've used so far, but as I tried it on my Arch Linux today, it didn't work. 1. Super Drive is not visible as /dev/sr0 after being plugged in, only as /dev/bus/usb/001/0xx 2. "sudo sg_raw /dev/bus/usb/001/010 EA 00 00 00 00 00 01" fails with error message "do_scsi_pt: Inappropriate ioctl for device" lsusb lists "Bus 001 Device 010: ID 05ac:1500 Apple, Inc. SuperDrive [A1379]" and dmesg says "usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 10 using xhci_hcd". I installed sg3_utils from extra. I suspect Arch Linux being the problem, since it worked on debian before. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Lukas [0]: https://christianmoser.me/use-apples-usb-superdrive-with-linux/

Running pacman -Qi geoclue geoclue2 revealed that geoclue is needed by no package, but the conflicting geoclue2 is needed by webkitgtk and webkit2gtk. So removing geoclue2 was no option at first hand, but I went with removing geoclue, which was not needed. After that, I tried to run pacman -Syu again, and no file conflicts were mentioned, so removing geoclue fixed the issue. If anyone else stumbles upon this problem, this might help.
[arch-general] Gedit startup issues
Dear fellow Archers, I'm using XFCE4 on an up-to-date Arch Linux installation I've built from the official downloadable image and by following the instructions on the Arch wiki. The system works fine, but there are still some bugs I want to zap out. First thing is: Sometimes gedit won't start when launching it over the GUI. I've installed it from the package repositories by using pacman, and it works most times, but, sometimes (I can't see any pattern in when it works and when not) it just won't start from the GUI. By GUI, I mean * The XFCE-Applications Menu * By double-clicking a text file that is associated with gedit * By clicking the gedit icon I've attached to docky I've never noticed such issues when launching gedit from the GUI. Furthermore, I didn't see any error messages in dmesg or in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. When the problem appears, it often persists until the next reboot. I have no clue on how to fix it, any ideas are greatly appreciated. It's quite annoying that I can't rely on gedit... Thanks in advance, Lukas
