Howdy adérito,

Accessibility based projects like Tarch and F123Light are not official Arch
Linux releases. Bug reports, feature requests, etc for those projects do not
belong on this list. If you are familiar, for example with Vinux, you can not
ask support questions about it on the Ubuntu list. I can help you with the
appropriate channels for getting support if you are interested.

If you need help with those, please contact me off list. I will do what I can.

Thanks,
Storm

Re: [arch-general] `base` group replaced by mandatory `base` package - manual intervention required

2019-10-11 Thread Storm Dragon via arch-general

Howdy,

I wonder if there shouldn't be two base packages. maybe a base-minimal for
containers, and a base like the original. I worry that the new method will be
confusing for people coming to Arch for the first time, and it kind of makes
things a bit more strenuous for the bare metal user.

Of course, this could just be because I am used to the old way. Will be
interesting to see what happens.

Thanks,
Storm

Yes, but stepping back a bit... do you accept that neither a text
editor, or less(1), are required on a minimal install that's just being
used as a base for producing a specialised install for a particular
task, as used in a container?

I'm unclear if you're arguing what should be in an add-on-to-base
package for typical interactive use, or that the concept of stripping
back base is wrong and should be reverted.

Hi Ralph,

first of all, the package "base" as is, is ok for me.

_If_ the developers _would_ ask the Arch users, what packages to include
again, I would at least vote for "less", "vim" and manual pages.

If I run a Linux in a container, this Linux does not need a kernel, but
actually "less" and an editor are needed by me...

[root@archlinux moonstudio]# systemd-nspawn -bq
[root@moonstudio ~]# uname -r; lsb_release -d
5.3.5-arch1-1-ARCH
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS
[root@moonstudio ~]# less /etc/apt/sources.list
[snip]
[root@moonstudio ~]# visudo
[snip]

...excluding the kernel, let alone packages to support exotic file
systems, IMO is useful. I want the mainline kernel, even while most of
the times I'm running real-time patched kernels, but I agree that the
kernel should be optional.

Removing the man pages, IOW the documentation by default is a very bad
idea, since this is one of the benefits of BSD and Linux over opaque
operating systems.

I guess for special minimized installs users want to install
something like BusyBox and remove man pages, as well as header files
and even something like "grep" and other that are replaced by BusyBox,
but such special cases IMO should not be reflected by a base install.

That's my opinion, IOW next time I will install the base package and
at least add "less", "vim", "nano" [1] and the man page related
packages.

Regards,
Ralf

[1]
$ grep EDIT .bashrc
export EDITOR="nano"

"vim" because it's the lowest common denominator and "nano" because
it's easier to use for simple editing. For advanced editing I'm in
favour of a GUI editor. A lot of other users are probably even in favour
of an IDE.

[arch-general] Input, Uinput, and udev problems with user access

2019-09-09 Thread Storm Dragon via arch-general

Howdy,

Up until yesterday evening, the following setup would allow the Fenrir screen
reader to access the tools it needs to read without root access in terminal
emulators like Xterm:

   groupadd --system input
   groupadd --system uinput
   echo 'KERNEL==\"event*\", NAME=\"input/%k\", MODE=\"660\", GROUP=\"input\"'
>> /etc/udev/rules.d/99-input.rules
   echo 'KERNEL==\"uinput\", SUBSYSTEM==\"misc\", OPTIONS+=\"static_node=uinput\",
TAG+=\"uaccess\", GROUP=\"uinput\"' >> /etc/udev/rules.d/99-fenrirscreenreader.rules

Now, however, while it can still read the screen, the keyboard does nothing.
Has something changed, and if so, what do I need to do differently to get it
working again?

[arch-general] Print Woes

2019-09-03 Thread Storm Dragon via arch-general

Howdy,

A few updates ago, cups stopped working with my printer. It said the ppd file
was corrupted, but I litterally printed something right before the update then
it broke right after.

I added cups and hplip to a new computer with a fresh install of Arch, and have gone
through localhost:631, system-config-printer, and hp-setup -i , and
none of these work with differing levels of error messages. They all boil down to the
same thing though.

The process goes just fine, it detects the printer on each method I have tried,
but when I hit the final add button, it says it was unable to copy the ppd
file. Out of curiosity, I copied the ppd file from /usr/share/... myself but
that did no good either. About the closest I have gotten is, with the cups web
interface, after hitting add printer, it does show up briefly, but it will not
actually print anything. As soon as I close the web interface, it goes away.
Also, the web interface just reloads the final add page with all the boxes
filled in, but never actually says it was successfully added, and clicking on
the printers links shows no printers found.

It's an HP Deskjet 2600 series. I hope I have given enough information. Printers are not something I am very good with, but hopefully this is enough to be able to trouble shoot it..

Thanks for any help, :)

In the xterm, run `od -c' and type `Home Enter Ctrl-D' and then adjust

It may be better to slowly build up your X resources a bit at a time,

[arch-general] Xterm and .Xresources

2019-08-07 Thread Storm Dragon via arch-general

Howdy,

I am trying to get Xterm to work in practically the same way as the console,
just with a bit better font support. I have searched the net and created an
extensive .Xresources file, which is attached to this message. It is supposed
to fix all the function keys, the six pack, and even the numpad keys. the
problem is, the keyboard fix part, doesn't work.

I found that if I export TERM=vt220 that most keys do work, but home and end in
applications like nano and ne do not work still and cause weird behavior. I was wondering
if exporting TERM should even be necessary, because in the console, I never have to do
that, and it shows as "linux".

Can someone please take a look and help fix up this .Xresources, and also, do I
really need to export TERM, or can I ditch that setting?

Thanks for the help,

Unfortunately, on this computer, if I have X started, whatever I type in my

mutt, it is also appearing in a leafpad window in X. Also, when I press keys
like alt+left arrow to go back in firefox, or alt+f2 which I have bound to a
run dialog, it switches to the console. When I switch back to X, in the case
of the alt+F2 shortcut, the run dialog is opened.

I have searched the net vigorously, and although I can find people who have the
same problems, I haven't found a solution. does anyone have a suggestion for
what may be happening here, and hopefully how to fix it?

computer believes the screen to be?
Thanks for any help,

I'd suggest trying to use "stty rows N columns M" to force terminal
size regarless of what the kernel believes it to be.

Re: [arch-general] Increase console size regardless of screen size

2017-08-27 Thread Storm Dragon via arch-general

Howdy,
I am using speech and screen. My screen reader is Fenrir, available from the
AUR:

https://github.com/chrys87/fenrir

I am using an Odroid XU4 with which is an ARM machine. So it uses uboot. I did
uncomment a larger screen setting in the boot.txt file and did mkscr to compile
it. Here is the line from boot.txt:

# 1920x1080 (1080P) without monitor data using generic information
(1080p-noedid)
setenv videoconfig "drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1920x1080.bin"

It still insists on the tiny terminal though. This is the only thing standing
between me and the perfect setup lol.
Thanks

Storm-

Is this on a braille display via brltty? Or via a screen
reader/TTS/speech synthesizer?

If the former, which model is your braille device?

I have noticed this issue before with VGA framebuffer resolutions (or
KMS mode resolution) being less than ideal, but I'm not quite sure if
brltty does translations *from* the VGA or if it occurs at a lower level
and emulates a VGA display to the kernel. I unfortunately have no
experience with this or frame of reference and no devices to test with
either, but I'd say I'm intrigued by how it handles this.

If brltty does appear as a VGA device to the kernel, I should note that
80x30 is a standard mode of grub legacy (specifically, mode 0f05 or type
4). However, unless you specifically installed and configured your
system to use grub legacy, I can't see that being relevant.

I would try setting:

GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x24 # or whatever the max resolution is?
# start conservatively and work your way up
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep

in /etc/default/grub and re-running grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
to see if this makes any difference either way in how it renders to
however you're interacting with it.

Best of luck; do please keep us posted, as I've never interacted with
vision-impaired terminals before so this is new territory for me.

Re: [arch-general] (Off-topic) Command-line torrent download tool

2017-07-24 Thread Storm Dragon via arch-general

Howdy,
I'm glad there's now something other than rtorrent. Rtorrent works usually, but
there are some torrents that just refuse to work with it, hopefully this new,
in development CLI tool will fil in the gap.
Are you planning to make a PKGBUILD for it in the AUR, or do you want someone
else to do it?

Re: [arch-general] arch health

2017-04-20 Thread Storm Dragon via arch-general

Howdy,
I offered once to learn all the stuff needed to become a TU to help out with package maintenance. The offer still stands, if someone is willing to talk with, help with training, and finally sponsor me. The offer still stands. I could work on Arch related stuff several hours per week if needed. I have a few packages I would move from the AUR, but not a ton, so I could addopt things that are orphaned, and help wherever needed. Of course, I'm just as happy maintaining my stuff in the AUR, but if I can help, I will.

[arch-general] python-txaio

2017-04-17 Thread Storm Dragon via arch-general

Howdy,
I noticed that python-txaio was marked out of date last month. The older
version is now causing another package, python-autobahn, to not function. I was
able to fix this for myself just by installing from abs.
I worry though, that newbies may not know how to fix this issue for themselves.
So, if someone has time, can you please update to version 2.7.0?
Thanks

This all leaves me confused. The first thing I would suggest is to figure out

I guess I didn't communicate the accessibility part of it very well. I am
interested in doing work for accessibility package, those that either aren't
maintained, or if someone is interested in dropping them, or having a
co-maintainer. Also, for packages that required to build them. I noticed a
while back the package dotconf was orphaned, for example, and it is required to
build speech-dispatcher. My list of packages related to accessibility in my
original post wasn't a list I planned on maintaining specifically, unless it
became necessary, it was just a list of example of the type of stuff in which I
have an interest.
I am also willing to take up some of the packages that don't have maintainers
atm, as well as helping out however I can.

Howdy,
Thanks for the info. My original post wasn't meant to be an actual request to
become a TU, but rather a preparation request. I read the wiki for the
guidelines, and it seems like having close contact with an existing TU would be
a good thing. So, my original message was more aimed at finding someone who
would be willing/and have the time to hang out, and maybe fill me in on the
stuff I would need to know when I get on the inside :). I think I have the
skillset, but I do need a sponsor, so I definitely need to get to know a TU for
that anyway.
Thanks

[arch-general] interested in becoming a TU

Howdy,
I am interested in becoming a TU. I have several packages in the AUR, including
magic-wormhole{,-git}, rndsig, libsonic-git, rsgames, etc.
My main area of interested, in maintinaing packages as a TU, would be
accessibility related items, E.G. orca, speech-dispatcher, espeakup.
Before I actually apply, I'd like to get some feedback from an already existing
TU, to make sure I have the required skillset, and just get some general
pointers. If anyone is willing to help and eventually sponsor me, please
contact me off list.

mean, if the last command executed successfuly, do the next instruction. If you
want to break it down into a more readable series, it could be ran as:
curl -s https://stormdragon.tk/scripts/vm.sh > vm.sh
When your prompt comes back, then run:
bash vm.sh
