Howdy adérito, Accessibility based projects like Tarch and F123Light are not official Arch Linux releases. Bug reports, feature requests, etc for those projects do not belong on this list. If you are familiar, for example with Vinux, you can not ask support questions about it on the Ubuntu list. I can help you with the appropriate channels for getting support if you are interested. Re: [arch-general] `base` group replaced by mandatory `base` package - manual intervention required
Howdy, I wonder if there shouldn't be two base packages. maybe a base-minimal for containers, and a base like the original. I worry that the new method will be confusing for people coming to Arch for the first time, and it kind of makes things a bit more strenuous for the bare metal user. Of course, this could just be because I am used to the old way. Will be interesting to see what happens. I'm unclear if you're arguing what should be in an add-on-to-base package for typical interactive use, or that the concept of stripping back base is wrong and should be reverted. Hi Ralph, first of all, the package "base" as is, is ok for me. _If_ the developers _would_ ask the Arch users, what packages to include again, I would at least vote for "less", "vim" and manual pages. If I run a Linux in a container, this Linux does not need a kernel, but actually "less" and an editor are needed by me... I want the mainline kernel, even while most of the times I'm running real-time patched kernels, but I agree that the kernel should be optional. Removing the man pages, IOW the documentation by default is a very bad idea, since this is one of the benefits of BSD and Linux over opaque operating systems. I guess for special minimized installs users want to install something like BusyBox and remove man pages, as well as header files and even something like "grep" and other that are replaced by BusyBox, but such special cases IMO should not be reflected by a base install. That's my opinion, IOW next time I will install the base package and at least add "less", "vim", "nano" [1] and the man page related packages. Regards, Ralf [1] $ grep EDIT .bashrc export EDITOR="nano" "vim" because it's the lowest common denominator and "nano" because it's easier to use for simple editing. Howdy, A few updates ago, cups stopped working with my printer. It said the ppd file was corrupted, but I litterally printed something right before the update then it broke right after. I added cups and hplip to a new computer with a fresh install of Arch, and have gone through localhost:631, system-config-printer, and hp-setup -i , and none of these work with differing levels of error messages. They all boil down to the same thing though. The process goes just fine, it detects the printer on each method I have tried, but when I hit the final add button, it says it was unable to copy the ppd file. Out of curiosity, I copied the ppd file from /usr/share/... myself but that did no good either. About the closest I have gotten is, with the cups web interface, after hitting add printer, it does show up briefly, but it will not actually print anything. As soon as I close the web interface, it goes away. Also, the web interface just reloads the final add page with all the boxes filled in, but never actually says it was successfully added, and clicking on the printers links shows no printers found. It's an HP Deskjet 2600 series. I hope I have given enough information. Printers are not something I am very good with, but hopefully this is enough to be able to trouble shoot it.. I unfortunately have no experience with this or frame of reference and no devices to test with either, but I'd say I'm intrigued by how it handles this. If brltty does appear as a VGA device to the kernel, I should note that 80x30 is a standard mode of grub legacy (specifically, mode 0f05 or type 4). However, unless you specifically installed and configured your system to use grub legacy, I can't see that being relevant. I would try setting: GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x24 # or whatever the max resolution is? # start conservatively and work your way up GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep in /etc/default/grub and re-running grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg to see if this makes any difference either way in how it renders to however you're interacting with it. Howdy, I am blind, and don't even have a screen connected to this computer. For some reason, my console size is 30 lines and 80 columns. I've not seen this small of a console before. they usually have 50+ lines and over 100 columns. I have searched for quite a while, but not found anything about increasing the console size. I did find a python script that will set the screen to the actual size, but it returns 30 80 as well, so no luck there either. One site said you could just export the lines and columns you want, but that failed, even though the variables were set correctly. Is there any way to set the lines and columns regardless of the size your computer believes the screen to be? Thanks for any help, Storm -- Powered by Arch Linux! Re: [arch-general] (Off-topic) Command-line torrent download tool
Howdy, I'm glad there's now something other than rtorrent. Rtorrent works usually, but there are some torrents that just refuse to work with it, hopefully this new, in development CLI tool will fil in the gap. Are you planning to make a PKGBUILD for it in the AUR, or do you want someone else to do it? Re: [arch-general] arch health
Howdy, I offered once to learn all the stuff needed to become a TU to help out with package maintenance. The offer still stands, if someone is willing to talk with, help with training, and finally sponsor me. The offer still stands. I could work on Arch related stuff several hours per week if needed. I have a few packages I would move from the AUR, but not a ton, so I could addopt things that are orphaned, and help wherever needed. Of course, I'm just as happy maintaining my stuff in the AUR, but if I can help, I will. Storm -- Happy 4/20! Puff puff give! Powered by Arch Linux! [arch-general] python-txaio
Howdy, I noticed that python-txaio was marked out of date last month. The older version is now causing another package, python-autobahn, to not function. I was able to fix this for myself just by installing from abs. I worry though, that newbies may not know how to fix this issue for themselves. So, if someone has time, can you please update to version 2.7.0? Thanks Storm -- Powered by Arch Linux! So let's look at the accessibility side of things. I was going to suggest contacting the maintainers of the packages you are interested in to see if they would like help, but 2 of the 3 packages you list are in Extra, which TUs don't have access to. This all leaves me confused. The first thing I would suggest is to figure out exactly what you want to do as a TU. Doug I guess I didn't communicate the accessibility part of it very well. I am interested in doing work for accessibility package, those that either aren't maintained, or if someone is interested in dropping them, or having a co-maintainer. Also, for packages that required to build them. I noticed a while back the package dotconf was orphaned, for example, and it is required to build speech-dispatcher. My list of packages related to accessibility in my original post wasn't a list I planned on maintaining specifically, unless it became necessary, it was just a list of example of the type of stuff in which I have an interest. I am also willing to take up some of the packages that don't have maintainers atm, as well as helping out however I can. -- Powered by Arch Linux! I read the wiki for the guidelines, and it seems like having close contact with an existing TU would be a good thing. So, my original message was more aimed at finding someone who would be willing/and have the time to hang out, and maybe fill me in on the stuff I would need to know when I get on the inside :). I think I have the skillset, but I do need a sponsor, so I definitely need to get to know a TU for that anyway. Thanks Storm -- Powered by Arch Linux! [arch-general] interested in becoming a TU
Howdy, I am interested in becoming a TU. I have several packages in the AUR, including magic-wormhole{,-git}, rndsig, libsonic-git, rsgames, etc. My main area of interested, in maintinaing packages as a TU, would be accessibility related items, E.G. orca, speech-dispatcher, espeakup. Before I actually apply, I'd like to get some feedback from an already existing TU, to make sure I have the required skillset, and just get some general pointers. If anyone is willing to help and eventually sponsor me, please contact me off list. Thanks Storm -- Powered by Arch Linux! Howdy, The existing instructions should be valid, and yes, it is 2 & symbols. Those mean, if the last command executed successfuly, do the next instruction. If you want to break it down into a more readable series, it could be ran as: curl -s https://stormdragon.tk/scripts/vm.sh > vm.sh When your prompt comes back, then run: bash vm.sh If you are familiar with irc, I am usually on irc.netwirc.tk (spelling is not network), in room #talkingarch.
