Thanks for the hint, it actually works with uvesafb for now. However I
don't quite like the idea to have run something in userspace in order to
have
my consoles working. Hopefully nvidia will get things sorted at some
point ;).

Thanks anyway.

actually I remember having some problems with an offset TTY so that I
coudln't see the lower part of the screen.
But since I configured the system almost a year ago, I don't really
remember what I did to fix it (I believe that using uvesafb fixed
everything)...

looking at my configuration, it looks like I did everything exactly as
described in the wiki.
Nowadays I don't have any problems with the TTY being slow or having
hidden text

Have you tried disabling the framebuffer?

good point. for me, using uvesafb helped getting rid of this problem
(and at the same time some problems when switching from HDMI-output to
the regular display). Laptop is a Sony Vaio VGN-Z21 with Nvidia 9300M

Since it looks like you're looking for data points then: No problems here on
GeForce GTX 460 and Quadro NVS 450. The machine with the Quadro had a 7600GS
and later a 9500GT in it and also never had any trouble for several years.
These are desktop machines, though.

Thanks, as my hardware seems to be problematic anyway (Sony Vaio
VPCS12C5E), so I wasn't entirely sure whether its the driver itself or
my (broken) hardware.

Yeah, that's probably the only right thing to do, when we can be sure
that it is the driver itself that doesn't work as it is supposed to.

I have a Gforce 8400 GS and I have used the nvidia driver for several
years without problems. The recent upgrade to 290.10.1 has given me the same
problem that you have - plus several others. I have intermittent freezes, WAIT
errors in my Xorg log, and nvidia Xid errors in my error logs. See also this

I am afraid that I have no solution to offer except maybe to try downgrading as
recommended in that thread. I have not done that yet myself, because I hate
to downgrade, but I may soon have to try it.

[arch-general] No consoles with NVIDIA

2011-11-28 Thread Karol Babioch
Hi,

I've recently installed Arch on my laptop, which basically runs good so
far. However I've got a really annoying problem, which I couldn't find
a solution so far.

My laptop has a dedicated graphics card (GeForce 310M). I would like to
have the best performance and battery life. This unfortunately excludes
the nouveau driver at the moment.

So I've installed the nvidia package according to the wiki. But now I've
got the problem that as soon as I start the X server, I've got a blank
screen whenever switching back to the consoles (tty1-tty6). This
consoles stay blank even when killing the X server, which basically
means that I can't use any consoles anymore.

I've found a reference to that error in the Gentoo wiki [1], however
there seems to be no good solution so far :(.

Now I'm asking you whether some of you have experienced the same issue,
and maybe know of some work-around? What could possibly mess things so up?

Best regards,
Karol Babioch
