Re: [ARIE-L] RE: Ariel alternative?

2011-08-18 Thread Sandra D'Souza

I agree with Kathy.
Most vendors license agreements do not allow email as a delivery
methods. They do not mind Ariel and Odyssey even though the end result
can be the same. With Ariel and Odyssey the vendors feel confident
Libraries will abide by the rules of delivery, such as a print copy to
patron. This is my opinion and I could be wrong...With emails the
temptation is that many copies can be sent simultaneously and could be
widely distributed to non-patrons as well.

Kathy Tower wrote:

For us, the biggest problem with using email to deliver articles is that so
many of our journal holdings are now electronic and our license agreements do
not allow email as a delivery method. They are OK with Ariel or Odyssey
however.

Another occasional problem with sending articles as email attachments are the
size limits on some email accounts and that sometimes attachments are looked at
as a sign of spam so the emails are filtered out.

I have been having issues with Ariel for a while, the lasted being that the
send to function is not working. After months of working with IT we just
cannot figure out what is wrong... That and the fact that Ariel has not been
updated in a very long time has lead me to consider alternatives.

What other Ariel-type products are people using and why?

We currently recieve 95% of our requests via Docline and the other 5% via OCLC.
I need to do more research but was initially thinking of pairing Odyssey and
Illiad. Am I headed in the right direction or am I way off base?

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Re: [ARIE-L] Help Request with Ariel

2011-01-13 Thread Sandra D'Souza

Amy:
1) Just check to see if your settings for send and receive are OK
Both Send and Receive must be check marked under settings.
2) under Settings -> preference -> Send/Receive, you must have sending
and receiving ON.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I have recently begun working at our library, so I have never had the
experience of installing or troubleshooting Ariel. We just replaced our Ariel
machine, and while I can open Ariel, and scan in items, I can't seem to be able
to send anything out (presumably we also cannot receive requests).
I've attached a copy of our log, which says that the send attempt was aborted
for a 999 error. I've also attached a screenshot of the transaction
information. Any ideas as to the problem would be hugely appreciated.
In terms of software details, we are running Windows XP SP3 on an HP Compaq
6000 Pro and Ariel v. 3.3. If anyone has any ideas, but needs more information,
please feel free to ask.
Thanks!

Re: [ARIE-L] Custom Holdings Spreadsheet -- Meanings of the headings

2010-10-28 Thread Sandra D'Souza

Hi:
Since I am unable to get the owner of the spreadsheet directly, I am
sending this information via the ariel transmission system.
I am unable to send in my updates, because a message keeps coming back
saying I am not an authorized user or I do not have a membership with
the ILL-L list serve.

Can anyone suggest what should I do?
Thanks,

I have updated IAF –Illinois (I think it worked ??).

I think an email column would be worthwhile. We send more than half of
our articles out by email now and it would be good to know how many
people are using it or if anyone is really against it. We’ve only ever
had one place ask us to use Ariel and I explained that in certain
situations email is just easier and more economical. They were okay
with that.

Thanks for all your effort,

*Subject:* [ARIE-L] Custom Holdings Spreadsheet -- Meanings of the
headings

*Meanings of the headings:*

*Symbol* = OCLC Symbol

*State/Country* = location -- allows easy sorting for state and
regional groupings

*Reciprocal* = Does the library identify itself in the Policy
Directory as "reciprocal"?

The meaning of reciprocal is unclear. I put out a message to several
listservs a couple of years ago asking what the listserv members
thought it meant and found no consensus. Some libraries define
reciprocal as "having a formal, written agreement" and will not extend
reciprocity to anyone not in their formal groups. Some libraries
define it as "if you say you're reciprocal, then I will treat you as
reciprocal." There are no hard and fast rules.

I specifically asked if it was improper for a free lender to designate
themselves as reciprocal and to ask for reciprocity from libraries
that charged. No one told me it was wrong, so I designate myself as
reciprocal. BTW, I am open to reciprocal agreements and do have a
couple of formal agreements, but reciprocal agreements are more to my
advantage because I never charge anyone for anything.

*LVIS* = Libraries Very Interested in Sharing = free copies (up to 30
pages) and free book loans to LVIS members. Does not include AV. For
more information:
http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/who_we_are/OCLC/lvis.html

*Charges* = Charges, Free Copies, Free Loans, Free Copies and Loans,
Blank = couldn't determine from Policy Directory

If you want to add dollar amounts, that's up to you. I don't use
charges very often, so it's not important to me unless I & my patron
are desperately searching for lenders.

*Ariel *= Delivers documents via Ariel

*Odyssey* = Delivers documents via Odyssey

Question: Should we add a new column (*E-mail*) for libraries that
deliver documents via e-mail? Are there enough that it would be worth it?

*Notes & ?* = This was a field for the students to put in problems or
indicate special features

Some notations in the Notes field:

network processing center = I need to contact the individual library
instead of the center

non-supplier = at the time the student viewed the Policy Directory,
your library was a non-supplier -- perhaps for vacation, holiday
break, staffing, ?

Please delete it if you are currently a supplier.

You can put anything in the Notes field that you want to others to
know about you. Example: Phasing out Ariel; 2011 = Odyssey only

*Date Updated* = Date last change was made

*Initials/E-mail* = Just a way to id who made changes -- just in case
there's a question about who made a change and why

Hope this helps,

Linda,
I have the heading, I just need definitions.

What, exactly, is meant by "reciprocal"? We don't charge anyone for
anything. But, if another institution requires a formal reciprocal
agreement, then we have none. That's why my policy says 'no' but I've
never been sure if that was correct.

In the notes column, should there be anything about audiovisuals or
not? I know that's on another list but I'm not sure if it should go
here, too. I don't want to muddy the waters.

Does anyone have a solution to Jen Fritz's error message below? We are
also trying to install an "upgraded" version of Ariel software on a new
PC.

1. We currently run v3.4 on a w2000 PC. We want to install an
"upgrade" version of 4.1.1 on a NEW W7 PC. (The only "full version" of
Ariel we ever purchased was v2.0 over nine years ago.) Several weeks ago
Infotrieve told my co-worker to first install the online Ariel trial
version and then install our purchased "upgrade" of 41.1 - but she told

me

that the trial version wouldn't work. She now thinks that maybe a scanner
needs to be attached before the Ariel trial version will run?

Also, I suggested installing v3.3 (the last "upgrade" we purchased), then
installing v3.4, and then installing 4.1.1 on the new PC.

2. Like Jen, I am concerned about importing the patron list. We
have several years worth of entries in the database that we do not want

to

lose. Is there a solution to Jen's error message? And would someone
please send to the listserv Infotrieve's instructions to export entries

>from the former PC?

We would appreciate any and all help from the listserv.

Hello,

We have 2 computers for Ariel:

1 PC is for sending--this is an older PC-- it is Ariel FULL with receiving

1 PC is for receiving--this is a newer PC--it is Ariel Receive only.

We need to take the old "sending" PC offline, because the PC is too, too old and move
"sending" which is a FULL version onto the newer "receiving" PC. This way we will have
sending and receiving on the same PC using our FULL CDKey.

I have sorted thru the winariel.ini files on both the Ariel PCs and tried to change the
newer PC which is currently "receive only" to FULL by editing winariel.ini.
This hasn't worked as I expected. What am I missing? Something in the registry? How is
the Machine ID picked up in the ini file; can that be edited manually?

I can re-install; this would take re-installing back to and up thru several
versions, so would rather not. Would like to just reconfigure.

Also, is there a toll free number for Infotrieve support for Ariel or only the
email address and form?

Thanks,

Re: [ARIE-L] CBY stopping Ariel

2010-06-04 Thread Sandra D'Souza
We very rarely get an article via Ariel. It must be months ago. We
usually receive via Odyssey and I usually lend via email.

Sue Gagnon wrote:

I would love to get rid of Ariel too, but we still have many libraries
that send us copies using Ariel. We now do all of our scanning in
Odyssey and export copies to the desktop which need to be sent by
Ariel. They are easy to import into Ariel to send. My student workers
and I were getting very frustrated with Ariel crashing every time we
needed to crop, rotate, delete, or insert pages. It was an incredible
waste of our time. Doing all of the scanning in Odyssey bypasses all
that trouble.

We began using ILLiad last summer and Odyssey is part of this program.
Libraries that do not have ILLiad can download Odyssey Standalone. See

Re: [ARIE-L] Worth it to upgrade from 3.4 to 4.1.1?

2009-02-05 Thread Sandra D'Souza

Joe Ellison wrote:

Sandra,

Others might want to weigh in on this as well. Some of the version changes
were made in patron delivery, which we don't use much in Ariel. I gather the
"deliver to web" option is better than it was in 3.4 (or is there, when it
wasn't in 3.4). We're still using Prospero for web delivery, though we're
looking to phase that out soon.

Germane to your question about the email password, they separated the
switches for email sending and receiving, so you can turn on each one
independent of the other. Not sure if this alone makes it worth upgrading,
but it does get rid of that pesky message if you choose not to receive Ariel
transmissions to an email address.

Support for color & greyscale scanning was improved (I think), though
there's no way to avoid the huge file sizes this creates. They added the
ability to import pdf as well as multipage tif files. The pdf import isn't
great, since it frequently bloats the file sizes by a factor of 10. If I
recall correctly from the early discussions, imported pdfs can only be
received by libraries running v.4.x. 4.1.1 corrected some flaws in the
earlier releases of 4.x

It was worth it here, but it might be a hard call for you. If the
difficulties you've had with receiving stem from versioning issues, and have
made it difficult for you to get materials you need, then I'd think it would
be worth it to upgrade.

Have a question. Is it worth moving to 4.1.1? We really do not have

What are the differences between 3.4 and 4.1.1?

A search function has finally been added to the original
ARIE-L list archive. Covering over 10 years worth of messages
to the list, this should make the archive much more valuable
for answering common questions about Ariel. You can access the
archive here:

 https://mailman1.u.washington.edu/mailman/private/arie-l/

Your list email address and password are required for access.
You can have your list password sent to you by sending email

>from your subscribed address to

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

with PASSWORD in the subject line.

As announced several months ago, list messages are also now
being archived at

 http://www.mail-archive.com/arie-l@u.washington.edu/

That archive is open to the public and doesn't require a
password. Since the original archive is now searchable, I no
longer plan to add the message backfile to this archive.

Let me know if you have any questions.

How are most libraries dealing with new installations of Ariel?

* If you have 3.x, are you purchasing an upgrade license for a new

We need to install two new scanners at two branch libraries and still
rely
on Ariel for RAPID requests, but $1300 for new Ariel is a little
astonishing.

Anyway, just wondering.

[ARIE-L] Doc Delivery recd without page info

2008-08-08 Thread Sandra D'Souza

Hi Everyone:

I was having problems with Ariel documents going to the printer. Now
since that was rectified by my helpdesk, a new problem has arisen. When
I send articles received to my patrons via Ariel, the document goes into
the email, blank. Does anyone know why the pages are blank instead of
containing the article?

Appreciate your help.
