On song, Rahman eyes Middle England By Rashmee Roshan Lall/TNN London: A R Rahman has finally launched a long-cherished attempted makeover from Britains so-called Mozart of Madras to Maestro of Maida Vale, a prim London locality synonymous with Middle England. On Wednesday, Rahman revealed news of an ambitious comeback tour of Britain, the country that panned his classical Beethoven-to-Bollywood symphonic concert in Birmingham last year. Its not about conquering the white world, Rahman told TOI on Wednesday, with some caution as he revealed he would bravely take to the Western stage in July with dreams of becoming Indias first real cross-over musical composer to the West. But he said: It would be nice if we could have a cross-over concert with white audiences mixed in with Asians. Its not about the money either, or not wholly so, declared Rahman, as he explained why he was daring to take to a Western stage once again for the first time since Bombay Dreams suffered a nightmarish reception on Broadway. Rahman is clear that he wants no part of the grosser geo-politics of globalisation. The USAs hostile reception to his London musical Bombay Dreams, he says, was because the Americans thought Indians were taking their jobs and were now were taking over Broadway. Music, he insists, has no country, colour or preferred language. He is equally adamant that Britain is the ideal launch pad for his quest to wow white and Asian audiences. His last such unsuccessful foray was in Los Angeles five years ago. The crossover element was just 5-6% of the audience, he says. I hope itll be more, here, at this point. So does everybody with an enlightened appreciation of Rahman. Not least, music industry commentators who have long identified Rahman as the best Indian spice export to British fare since chilli powder free of carcinogenic Sudan Red arrived on these shores. I think I meant to say we (the yahoogroup) will have 2 concerts, but I see what you mean.. :) haha. I might join a r r for the american leg spoiling things here and there, but I am not useful in live shows at all! I didn't hear of australian shows yet. A R R is in London preparing for the English shows I guess. A R R wasn't planning on any shows, but wants to do it for the Tsunami victims. A R R finds the English ambiance to be unfitting for his film music for some reason, so those shows might be different! We'll find out I guess. [arr] Malaysian Rahmaniacs Upcoming gathering
Dear Rahmaniacs, It has been more than a year since we last held our gathering. Ever since then, we have been looking around in KL, but it seems just impossible to find a suitable place in KL. We have decided to have the gathering in July, most probably in mid July or end of July. So you all have around 2 months to save up some money for the gathering. The cost might be around RM40-RM50 this time,since we are upgrading the jamming sesion with quality stuffs such as mixers, big speakers and so on.The gathering will also be recorded via handycam. If until July we still cant find a place, then we have to settle for our usual venue, Port Dickson, of course. We really wish that more Rahmaniacs from KL join us this time. If trasportation is a problem, we can actually try to find some solution to it. In the mean time, Naren, Mithiran, Burn, Kumar, Simman, and rest of the packkeep searching for the venue.
