Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero

A filmmaker portraying history can either simply tell a story, the way
Rajkumar Santoshi did in 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh', or he can
present a point of view, like how Kamal Haasan's hallucinatory 'Hey
Ram' got at the madness of a period through the madness of a man. With
'Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero' (a title only a
fraction shorter than the almost four-hour film), Shyam Benegal
initially appears to be doing the latter. He opens with Netaji arguing
with Gandhiji, "Ab ahimsa ka bansuri kaun sunega," and Bapu replies,
"Mera pyaar phool se bhi komal hai aur patthar se bhi kathor." Such
flowery, metaphor-laden constructs are a big part of forties'
melodramas, so I thought Benegal, with this prologue, was not only
setting up his story, but also his style. I thought he was going to
colour his 'Bose' with the culture of the era.
But it turns out Benegal merely wants to tell a story, a decidedly
bloated story whose sole purpose is to tick items off a checklist of
incidents from the last five years of Bose's life -- he did this,
then he did that, then he did this, then he did that... Yes, this is
what a biopic does, but surely this needn't be _how_ it does it!
Everything that's problematic with this noble but numbing effort is
represented in the scene where Netaji asks a mother to allow her son,
named Lakshman, to fight alongside him, because, "Ram bhi Lakshman ke
bina yudh nahin jeet paaye." Had 'Bose' stayed true to the spirit of
its prologue, such ornate eloquence would have been understandable,
even inevitable, but with the docu-style matter-of-factness that
pervades most of this movie, the effect of this dialogue is like
flipping suddenly from The History Channel to a glitter-kitsch Ramanand
Sagar epic on Doordarshan.
Khedekar certainly resembles Bose, but his face otherwise is a benign
blank. Apart from stray instances -- when he admits his ambivalence to
Gandhiji's non-violence, or when AR Rahman's haunting 'Ekla Chalo'
plays each time he walks away from loved ones, all alone ("tanhaa raahi
apni raah chalta jaayega," says the song) -- it's hard to see what
he's about, what he's thinking, why he's doing what he's doing.
Is it Benegal's point that Netaji was so warts-free and
uncomplicated, his thoughts translated directly to his actions? More
likely, Khedekar -- like the Benegal regulars (Rajit Kapoor, Rajeshwari
Sachdev) -- is the victim of filmmaking that seesaws between
understatement and scenes such as the one where Bose marches into a
barrack full of reluctant soldiers, launches into a thirty-second
speech about the Sepoy Mutiny, and instantly has everyone yelling 'Jo
Bole So Nihaal Sat Sri Akal'.
Some good performances (Rajpal Yadav, Divya Dutta, Ila Arun) and some
effective sequences (a walk through breathtakingly rugged Afghan
terrain) notwithstanding, it's tragic to see the man who redefined
Indian history for a whole generation -- with his epochal 'Bharat Ek
Khoj' -- struggle so to reinterpret a definitive portion, a definitive
person, of that same history. You could argue that 'Bose' is watchable
simply because of its wealth of well-researched detail (Did you know,
for instance, that 'U-boat' is pronounced 'oo-boat?'), but all this is
just information -- where's the insight?

Hi The music director of the film was Bappi Lahiri and the background is by our boss. Dont know about. It starred vijayasanthi.
