Sumptuously designed and beautifully shot, the film will delight Bollywood fans but likely will fail to capture mainstream audiences with its melodramatic style and jarring combination of stirring action, brutality and musical numbers. For 100 years, the East India Company was the face of the British Empire, ruling one-fifth of the world and dominating the Indian subcontinent with the help of 300,000 Hindu and Muslim soldiers called Sepoys. In Mehta's tale, the introduction of a new rifle in 1853 brought down the most successful private company in history. The rifle used a cartridge that soldiers had to bite the end of in order to pour the powder into the barrel. But the company used the grease of pigs and cows to seal the cartridges, and so placing them in their mouths violated the Sepoys' faiths. Mangal Pandey (Aamir Khan) is one of the bravest Sepoys, having served with distinction in places like Afghanistan's Khyber Pass, where he saved the life of Capt. William Gordon (Toby Stephens). At first, trusting the Company lie that the cartridges do not use pig or cow grease, Pandey bites the bullet, but when the truth is revealed, he leads the Sepoy in a rebellion that for the first time unites all the various creeds, tribes and castes of the region. It sows the seeds for the end of the East India Company's reign, though India would not gain its independence from Britain for about another century. The saga is told in black-and-white terms with a clear division between good guys and bad guys. The dastardly villains are the ones in the red uniforms who speak as if they've just swallowed a plum. The only good British officer is, inevitably, Scottish. The Bollywood style is so bouncy and optimistic, however, that it's difficult to sustain the effect of an oppressed nation when everyone, even untouchables and slave girls, all appear so jolly. The hero is savagely beaten by five Company men, but shortly afterward he joins the beautiful pleasure house girl Heera (Rani Mukherji) in a jaunty dance number. Although the film is expertly rooted in its period, Heera seems to have been parachuted in from the 21st century with her cover girl eyes and MTV choreography. There are many bold statements about freedom and peoples' rights to their own cultures and faiths and a suggestion that there are modern versions of the East India Company at work in the world, which might well be true, but the message gets a bit lost amid all the happy singing people. Blood, death and dancing girls In 1857, Indian soldiers turned on their British rulers in a mutiny that led to an unprecedented wave of violence across the country. Is it really a good subject for a musical? Geoffrey Macnab reports Friday August 5, 2005 The Guardian The Rising 'Song and dance for every aspect of life' ... Aamir Khan stars in The Rising "For too long, we have rusted in the service of foreign masters. All it takes is a bit of grease to remind us who we are." So declares Mangal Pandey in The Rising, an epic new film about the so-called Indian Mutiny of 1857. Mangal is a sepoy , a private in the British army. New Enfield rifles have just been introduced. To use them, soldiers are required (quite literally) to bite the bullet. The paper cartridges encasing the gunpowder are heavily greased with tallow. This, the sepoys correctly suspect, contains traces of beef and pig fat. Neither Hindu nor Muslim soldiers are prepared to use the new cartridge, which they term the kartoos. Article continues The Rising is a historical epic complete with all the Bollywood trimmings. There are spectacular battle scenes and even more spectacular song and dance sequences. (The music was composed by AR Rahman, of Bombay Dreams fame.) As the heroic sepoy, Aamir Khan leaps around with an energy reminiscent of Errol Flynn in his heyday. There is strong support from Toby Stephens as Scottish officer William Gordon, saved by Mangal Pandey on the battlefields of Afghanistan, who becomes his closest friend. Director Ketan Mehta provides a rogue's gallery of British officers: Flashman types in red tunics who beat and humiliate the natives; and elderly officers with fat, grey moustaches who think nothing of double-crossing the sepoys. The drama, though, hinges on whether those cartridges really are smeared with animal fat. Historians have tried to explain the 1857 rising in social, economic and political terms, but it is clear that the kartoos played a key part in provoking the violence that subsequently swept through India. "If you go back to the original Urdu and Persian documents of the mutineers, which I have been translating, the religious nature of the uprising is blatantly obvious," says London and Delhi-based historian William Dalrymple, whose next book, The Last Mughal, about Bahadur Shah Zafar, looks closely at the events of 1857. "The old cliche of the cartridges really was terribly important. It was the issue that broke the camel's back, in every sense." In truth, the information available about Mangal Pandey's one-man revolt against the fat-smeared cartridges is relatively limited. Christoper Hibbert's book The Great Mutiny (1978), still considered by many as the best English-language, single-volume study of the events of 1857, only contains three pages about him. Hibbert gives an account of the sepoy, "evidently under the influence of some intoxicating drug", rampaging about with a loaded musket, taking pot shots at British officers, and shouting that "from biting these cartridges, we shall become infidels". "To me, Mangal is a symbol more than a character - a symbol of the spirit of freedom," says Ketan Mehta. He has been trying to make The Rising since the late 1980s. His initial inspiration was a book his father wrote about freedom fighters and the battle for Indian independence. This portrayed Mangal Pandey as a folk hero: the first martyr of the war of independence. Mehta's film does something likewise. The casting of Aamir Khan, one of the biggest stars in Indian cinema, reinforces the sense that Mangal is a kind of latterday Robin Hood. As ever, Khan threw himself into the project. He spent a year and a half growing his hair long, nurturing a huge moustache, and researching the part, "getting soaked in the period", as he puts it. Unlike other Indian stars, who appear in several films simultaneously, Khan will only make one film at a time. With him on board, financiers finally overcame their suspicion about backing a "historical", a genre that has rarely done well at the Indian box office. "It's disarming when you're in a crowd with Aamir because Indian fans see him as a god, something akin to a deity," his co-star Toby Stephens says. "There is a religious look that comes over their faces when they see him in the flesh." The first time we encounter Mangal, his head is shown in big close-up in what seems to be an oval frame. It takes a moment to realise that he is staring at us through a noose. Ironically, in British army parlance of the 1850s, the sepoy 's name became synonymous with treachery. A Mangal Pandey was the term that British soldiers gave to all mutineers. Mehta's film ends with black and white newsreel footage of Gandhi and Nehru. The inference is clear. The making of Planet Kollywood The cream of the Tamil film industry gets together for the biggest tribute to Kollywood. SUDHISH KAMATH watches them at work The Hindu A time machine is being invented. It's called `Netru Indru Naalai.' Director Mani Ratnam is at the helm, all set to interpret the history of Tamil cinema from the very beginning. Let there be light, he says. Cinematographer-director Rajiv Menon obliges, switching on the torch lights on the eight-foot wide miniature model of the 120 feet wide stage at the Mindscreen office in Alwarpet. "Move that chedi (plant), bring that malai (hill) closer," he tells his assistants as he looks through the viewfinder. After clicking away with various light combinations, he connects his digital camera to his laptop to demonstrate how the transition from black and white to the technicolour era would work, much to the satisfaction of the director. "I want stunningly blue skies," reacts Mani. `It should look like the Ladakh skies." "A realistic sky has to be a vinyl one," says art director Sabu Cyril, the man entrusted with the job of giving Planet Kollywood a shape. He has the task of fitting a train, a ship, a dam, a building with a terrace, roads, hills and trees within that space, and has to account for making some of them disappear at the drop of light. What makes that difficult is that David Copperfield isn't in the crew. Research on costumes The next day, actor Revathy and designer Anu are running around researching colour and material for the costumes. They have to find over 750 different sets of clothes. Using the longest running musical "Cats" as a benchmark doesn't make it any easy, especially with Mani being very choosy about his colour schemes. "I'm scared of `jigna,' (loud, garish and gaudy clothes)," the director of the musical tells Anu, inspecting the samples for a number from the 1960s. "Use a lot of khakis, bottle-green and greys. Stick to that school for trousers. And let the shirts be white, off-white or cream. They could be flowery or pin-striped. But they should evoke that period," he explains. A few feet away in the conference hall, director Vasanth requests for an extension to practise at the dancers union hall on Burkit Road. "The stage won't be ready till August 5, so we want to continue rehearsals there," he squeals into the phone. Assigned with tasks of artiste co-ordination and production, Vasanth hardly has time to breathe. For, Mani is very particular that the dancers get used to the space at the venue. "We can then mark grids for Rajiv (lights)," he tells Sabu, who promises to deliver the stage by August 5. "As of now, the carpentry is happening in one place, painting is happening at another. We will be putting the whole thing together only by August 5," says Sabu. The scale of the event is so huge that the organisers request for a phased publicity campaign, just to ensure every single person's contribution is taken note of. "Not one person is being paid," says Vandana of The Banyan. "We're thankful to Madras Round Table 1. It's amazing to see their commitment. Apart from wages for the dancers and materials, we haven't paid for anything. Mani has given us three months. Look at him taking it all upon himself." At her residence, actor-dancer Shobana is rehearsing religiously for hours together for the only non-film performance of the show. And, at the dancers' union hall, dance masters Kala and Brinda are putting Shaam through the grind. The actor has a tough ask of getting into Kamal Haasan's dancing shoes. About 100 dancers have been rehearsing all day from July 25. "There are 20 different songs, no" says Kala. "There is a lot of difference between choreography for the stage and for film." At the Real Image office, Vandana and Vaishnavi from The Banyan fight over the aesthetics of layout of the posters as Senthil Kumar from Real Image offers to negotiate. Real Image, incidentally, is putting together the entire soundtrack for the show and programming it to sync with the computerised lights management system. "As the music changes, the lights will automatically change as programmed," explains Senthil. Apparently, A. R. Rahman has scored a track and Santosh Sivan is making a special short film for The Banyan's fund-raiser evening at the Sathyabama Engineering College. The proceeds of the show will go in aid of The Banyan's projects including a health care centre for villages around Kovilakuppam on East Coast Road, a therapeutic long-term care centre for homeless people with chronic psychiatric problems and a resource centre that will help in forging proactive partnerships to increase stakeholders in the mental health sector. He now prepares to launch his debut film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na which will be produced by Jhamu Sugandh. The film is all set to begin shooting in September this year. When contacted a hesitant Tyrewala informed, "Yes I am making a romantic comedy on the backdrop of college life. But I am not supposed to speak about the film right now. Wait till we make an official announcement." However he did divulge the name of the film. "My film is titled Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and will star all newcomers. I might have big names doing cameos. But I am not planning to have any one big star in the lead role." Would a shift to direction, result in writing taking a backseat? "I really am unsure about that.
