#1) I hadbeen at the India Pistols ground, Chennai, on the

Our Boss came down from the stage (for his dinner @ 11:30 PM) and went

#2) There was a function last month to honour the legend music

But I thought, he would'nt come, amidst his tight schedule. But to

after his arrival. (I will describe the speeches of people on the dias

And now comes the interesting part.. I wanted to take a snap
standing near our Boss. Inspite of very tight security, me and my
brother, squeezed on to the stage and succeeded in taking snaps,
standing besides him. Wow !!! What a moment it was.!!!

(I feel, the above two points qualifies me to be in this group !!!).

Right.. I have a suggestion now. Why don't we host an official

there is a very professional website: www.raajangham.com. It has lot of articles, samples, News about Raja. For Superstar Rajnikanth, there is
www.rajnifans.com. Here, it has stylish video clippings from his movies.

Why don't we have these kind of a site for our boss ??? Please
pour in some ideas how we can go about this. I am sure, we the

I do not agree with IndiaTimes comment on ARR's music.
When i watched the movie BOSE-Forgotten Hero, the
background music of our BOSS is so amazing but the
cinematography is so poor doesn't give good justice
for the great music.

I believe the same happens here for our BOSS bgm in
Mangal Pandey.
Anyway i am planning to watch the movie on Aug 15th.

The four year long wait is over for the fans of
 Aamir Khan. And for
them `Mangal Pandey' would be well worth the wait.
 He has excelled as
always as Ketan Mehta's `Mangal Pandey'.
The movie starts in an almost epic-like, grand
 fashion with an
elephant giving a symbolic clarion call for freedom.
 It takes your
breath away, but the pace of the story, especially
 in the first half
(to set the tone) is a little long drawn. In the
 end, it is not
a `Lagaan' (which the makers didn't want it to be
 anyway) meaning
that in terms of entertainment value, it falls a
 star short.

The film, set in 1857, is about Mangal Pandey, a
 sepoy in the British
army. Revolving around this simple Brahmin, the
 movie unfolds the
turbulent times and the happenings that changed the
 history of India.
It shows the unrest brewing against the British who
 set up the East
India Company as traders and finally settled down as
 rulers. It is
also a platform around which the next century would
 revolve. The film
also addresses a lot of factors like abolition of
 Sati and the caste
system that created the mood for the restlessness
 among the Indians.
Aamir's character evolves from a very simple,
 staunch Brahmin who is
happy to receive his Rs 7/- salary from the British
 to a man who
fired the imagination of a nation. Mangal shares a
 deep friendship
with a British commanding officer, Gordon whose life
 he once saved.
Though, he practices untouchability and maintains
 his Brahaminical
faith, but time and again he shows that he would not
 tolerate any
injustice done to his fellow Indians. He falls in
 love with Heera
(Rani Mukherjee) a prostitute. He dares to visit her
 where only
Englishmen, eunuchs and untouchables were allowed to
 go. What
triggers off the revolt is the supposedly greased
 cartridges laced
with cow and pig fat. To use them the soldiers have
 to bite into them
to break the seal. When the regiment officer
 commands them to use the
greased cartridge in their rifles the regiment
 refuses to do so. On
Gordon's assurance that no animal fat is used in
 them, Mangal Pandey
steps forward and uses them. Soon they discover the
 truth and Mangal
feels betrayed and hurt. This toughens him to take a
 stand to lay his
life for his country. He realizes that he was not
 fighting for his
hurt religious sentiments but for his own freedom
 and for the freedom
of his country. In the end he is shown smiling -
 unafraid of death.
Coming to the much talked about look that Aamir
 worked on and gave 2
½ years maintaining it, the long tresses and his
 moustache give him
an uncanny resemblance to the sketches of the real
 life Mangal
Pandey. Whether it's his uniform or his dhoti and
 the sacred-thread,
there's authenticity written all over the film. As a
 staunch Brahmin,
he is shown bathing in the Holy river, cooking his
 own food and
wearing a caste-defining long red `tika'. He does
 not speak chaste
Hindi as a Brahmin should, since he has not
 undergone any formal
education. And yet, he is not the rustic that we saw
 in `Lagaan'; he
is a much traveled man thanks to the movement of his
 battalion to
various states. He has the capacity to think that if
 the struggle for
freedom is launched at the same time in different
 parts of India the
company would definitely loose the battle as the
 sepoys outnumbered
the British. And Aamir plays that with his amazing
 repertoire of
emotional intensity and talent. As always, Aamir
 scores a 10 for the
sheer getting into character and dedication. Making
 that extra effort
to define his role apart from a `Lagaan' set in
 similar era among the
very same Britishers; the touch of `urbanisation' in
 character shows –
however subtly. For his character, Aamir has put on
 weight and made
an effort to look older to give more gravity to the
 character of
Mangal Pandey. He comes across as a serious guy
 throughout the film
except when he along with Gorden under the

[arr] India FM reviews The Rising - 4 Stars!

2005-08-12 Thread Sam
While Rahman's music may not be ever-lasting, his background score
has that international feel, befitting an epic

By Taran Adarsh, August 12, 2005 - 09:30 IST

An Aamir Khan film is special. And if the actor happens to take a
[almost] 4-year sabbatical from work and returns with a period epic,
MANGAL PANDEY, you wait with bated breath for the overtly choosy
actor to mesmerize his fans and cinelovers yet again.

Aamir's teaming with director Ketan Mehta as also producer Bobby
Bedi, names synonymous with quality cinema, conjures images of an
ambitious epic that could well be India's answer to the Mel Gibson
classic BRAVEHEART.

Talking from the economics point of view as well, there's a lot
riding on MANGAL PANDEY. The stakes are high, the industry can't
afford biggies to bite the dust.

A slice of history that explores the mutiny of 1857, MANGAL PANDEY
balances form and content beautifully. Lavishly mounted and
recreating the era with precision, MANGAL PANDEY suits the
term 'landmark cinema' and has all it takes to help Bollywood take a
giant step into world cinema with pride.

Ketan Mehta's execution of the subject leaves you tongue-tied, the
visuals appear true to life, the performances [so essential in a film
of this genre] are absolutely spellbinding, the sequence of events
that led to the mutiny are carefully explained. Result: The viewer
cannot help but get transported to an era when British ruled India.

Recreating history is difficult and making you glued to your seats
for the next 3 hours could be taxing if the content doesn't live up
to your expectations. But MANGAL PANDEY talks about the martyr, his
heroism, his contribution to India's freedom movement so effectively
and immaculately that you can't help but salute the great freedom
fighter.

To sum up, MANGAL PANDEY is a brave attempt on the part of its makers
to bring to life an important chapter from history. And make you
realize that the freedom we enjoy today is only because of our
predecessors, who gave their blood for the nation. The film succeeds
in arousing patriotic feelings without a shred of doubt!

Mangal Pandey [Aamir Khan] is an Indian sepoy serving Britain's East
India Company. Mangal rescues his commanding officer William Gordon
[Toby Stephens] on the battlefields of Afghanistan and the two men
develop a friendship. The Hindi-speaking Gordon is sympathetic
towards the locals, which is in stark contrast to most of his white
colleagues.

The story takes a turn when the British introduce a new set of
rifles. To use them, the sepoys are required to bite the bullet. The
paper cartridges encasing the gunpowder contain beef and pig fat.

Neither Hindu nor Muslim soldiers are prepared to use the new
cartridge on religious grounds. Trusting Gordon that the cartridges
do not use beef and pig fat, Mangal bites the bullet, but when the
sepoys learn the truth, Mangal revolts and leads a rebellion that
sows the seeds for the end of the East India Company's reign.

Attempting a period film in an era when the focus is on candyfloss,
escapist cinema is nothing short of a challenge. It's a risk, as the
storyteller just cannot deviate from history, indulge in cinematic
liberties, throw songs whether or not the situations warrant them or
try to balance serious with light moments. If you talk of national
heroes, you ought to remain faithful to the subject-material. And
that's precisely what Ketan Mehta does while narrating the story of a
great freedom fighter.

MANGAL PANDEY grips you from the very start. A number of sequences
[screenplay: Farrukh Dhondy] leave you spellbound --
The very start of the film, when Aamir is being taken to the gallows.

The fight between an English officer and Aamir, when the former
forcibly tries to molest Rani soon after the mujra.

Toby rescuing Amisha from the funeral pyre.

The turning point of the film, when Aamir uses the gun cartridge that
has been greased with cow and pig fat.

Aamir angrily confronting Toby Stephens at the intermission point.

Aamir facing the British army alone and when he realizes that he
would be overpowered, trying to commit suicide by shooting himself.
The sequence in the hospital, when Toby tells Aamir to apologize, but
Aamir sticks to his stand.

The finale, when Aamir is publicly hanged and a brief B W newsreel
follows.

Besides, the battle sequences [stunts: Abbas Ali Moghul] have been
executed with flourish.
Any loopholes in an otherwise perfect film? The songs seem forced in
the narrative. Ideally, the film could've done with two
songs, 'Mangal Mangal' and 'Teri Adaon Pe Main Vaari Vaari'. The Holi
track as also the romantic song [filmed on Aamir-Rani, Toby-Amisha]
can easily be deleted since they only act as barricades in the
otherwise smooth narrative.

Another drawback is that certain characters remain underdeveloped.
The women don't have much to do in the film. Even the track of the
maid [Mona Ambegaonkar], who feeds

[arr] Rediff reviews Mangal Pandey: History comes alive

2005-08-12 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
The Rising: History comes alive

Lindsay Pereira | August 12, 2005 12:35 IST

Aamir Khan is a rabble-rouser. It's a role he has mastered to perfection. His
nostrils flare
up, eye sockets pop and righteous indignation spills across the screen. It's no
surprise, then,
that it is this Angry Khan plastered on all posters for Mangal Pandey: The
Rising.

Luckily for him, as well as his audience, the rabble-rousing works. He did it
in Lagaan. He
does it again here. Only this time around, he's better dressed for the occasion.

The difficulty with historical epics like Mangal Pandey is that everyone knows
how they're
going to end. There may be twists and turns, but we know who's going to hit the
bucket. All we
can do is wait, patiently, for the denouement. Which is where Ketan Mehta's
skill as a director
comes to the fore. From the moment the film begins -- a coloured lithograph
morphing into a
real-life setting on the banks of a river -- you know you're in safe hands.

Mangal Pandey: The Complete Coverage

That feeling is reinforced when confronted with certain scenes like the
attempted burning and
eventual rescue of a sati (Amisha Patel) from the hands of a fanatic mob. She
sits motionless,
cowed by religion or opium, until the heat of the flames brings her to her
senses. Then she
shrieks, tries to get off the pyre, and is forcibly kept on by men wielding
sticks. It's then
you realise Ketan Mehta is a man who believes in doing his homework.

It is the year 1857, and India is firmly under the rule of the British East
India Company. It
has been in control for a century now, and the cracks are beginning to show.
Resentment is
widespread, and the introduction of a rifle with cartridges supposedly coated
in animal fat
only makes things worse. The setting is perfect for a hero to make an
appearance. Enter Mangal
Pandey.

Mehta's palette is huge; his colours, well defined. He takes a good history
lesson and gives it
shades all his own.

Holding this lesson up is the friendship between Pandey (Khan) and British
officer William
Gordon (Toby Stephens). Pandey the sepoy saves Gordon's life during an earlier
war in
Afghanistan and earns his respect. Soon, they are as close as an Englishman and
Indian can be,
getting into friendly bouts of wrestling, playing pranks on British officers,
drinking bhang
and roaming the streets singing bawdy songs.

It is the Enfield rifle that causes a rift. Gordon believes the greased
cartridge story is a
rumour. Pandey trusts him and uses the cartridge, risking defilement. When the
rumour gathers
momentum, he accuses Gordon of treachery, then decides to take on the Empire.

From a minor standoff, a rebellion begins to take shape.

Running between these two narrative points are other sub-plots. The sati --
aptly named Jwala
-- is rescued by Gordon and promptly falls in love with him. Pandey, on the
other hand, gets
weak-kneed when confronted by a nautch girl called Heera (Rani Mukerji) who
somehow manages to
conduct a mock marriage ceremony with him before he is hanged. Yes, there's no
escaping the
mock-marriage scene in our historical epics either.

Mehta understands that what the British referred to as the Sepoy Mutiny was
actually India's
First War of Independence. He knows when to let the songs flow, when to reign
in the strings.
He is also a master of what literary critics call 'the objective co-relative',
often using the
external landscape to reflect a character's inner turmoil.

Yes, there are incongruities. The Englishman's love for a sati, for instance,
or the idea of a
commanding officer and sepoy having a boy's night out. There's also something
strange about a
righteous Brahmin like Pandey taking on his superiors over a religious issue
while carrying on
with a casteless whore. Then, there's that little matter about his public
execution -- not
quite plausible considering he was hanged quietly, 10 days before the actual
date, to help the
British avoid any unrest.

There are also unfinished tales -- of Jwala, Heera, Kamla (Mona Ambegaonkar)
and Gordon's first
English flame, Emily (Coral Beed), along with other annoyances such as Gordon's
often
indecipherable Hindi, the damage done to the narrative pace by switching from
English to Hindi,
and Om Puri's deadpan, schoolteacher drone explaining things as if to an
audience collectively
afflicted with Down's Syndrome.

Taking pot shots at these issues is easy. It is the larger picture that demands
attention. Like
the fact that a talented director and equally talented cast manage to make you
sit through
three hours of cinema despite your being more than well-acquainted with the
plot.

The stuff of Bollywood is all in place -- colour, music, the obligatory Holi
number, men
refusing to die from bloody wounds. It's the themes that carry this one
through. When a wounded
Pandey tells Captain Gordon, 'We are all untouchables,' you realise Mehta has
managed to depict
a man coming to terms with personal

[arr] A R Rehman a short cut to the Oscars?

2005-08-12 Thread Sakeena
Hey everybody

Must Read , Article on Our BOSS and OSCAR :)

After an interval, A R Rehman is again composing music for a Hindi film
'Khazan' produced
and directed by Tanvir Ahmed. The film aims to make it to the Oscars.

A mix of sex and crime, with a bit of Hitchcock thrown in, the film is to be
shot mostly in
the Kottayam area of Kerala. The rest of the film is to be shot in Goa.

This month, 'Mangal Pandey' is being released. It has music composed by A R
Rehman. For
the past 4 years, Aamir Khan has not worked in any other film but 'Mangal
Pandey.' One
could say that his 'Lagaan' barely missed winning an Oscar. So Aamir is all the
more
determined to win an Oscar this time at least.

One important reason for 'Lagaan' getting near an Oscar is the music by Rehman.
To get
an Oscar nomination, one needs to give proper film publicity to the jury
members. For
'Lagaan,' Aamir Khan spent an astronomical sum for publicity purposes.

If A R Rehman's music makes a film a contender for the Oscars, then anyone
aiming for
the Oscars, makes a beeline for A R Rehman.

We are indeed proud that Bollywood thinks our A R Rehman is a short cut to the
Oscars!

Enjoy

Sakeena :D

[arr] Mangal Pandey gets historic opening, set to break all box-office records

2005-08-12 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Aamir Khan's 'Mangal Pandey - The Rising' opens to full houses in India

Mumbai, Aug 12 (ANI): The much awaited Aamir Khan-starrer Mangal Pandey- The
Rising released
today to full houses across the country.

There was expectedly a rush fo tickets at most cinema halls in the country,
given that Khan is
appearing on screen after a gap of four years.Going by the unprecedented
advance booking, the
movie is set to break all box-office records.

With Mangal Pandey, which is based on the theme of patriotism similar to what
was shown in his
previous movie Lagaan, Khan will again be seen taking on British colonial
rulers.

Exhibitors are reported to be in a jubilant mood over the film's release. The
film, which is
released with a record number of 400 prints plus all over India, has generated
a big
pre-release craze, with tickets for all theatres and multiplexes sold out for
the first four
days of the film.

In order to accommodate the extraordinary demand for tickets, the cinema hall
managers have
scheduled the film in a record number of shows. They have been having a tough
time coping with
the demand for tickets ever since they opened the advance booking for it on
Monday.

Because of the fact that the next week-end is a festive season with
Independence Day, Raksha
Bandhan and Parsi New Year, falling one after the other, everyone is expecting
the theatres to
be packed to full capacity in the coming two weeks.

It is a period film based on the historic mutiny of Indian Soldiers in 1857.
Besides Aamir
Khan, who is playing the title role, the film also has the country's latest
queen bee, Rani
Mukehrjee and would have been a sort of a casting coup if Aishwarya Rai had
played a part,
which is now being played by, Amisha Patel.

Other stars include foreign actor Toby Stephens. The producers of the film are
Bobby Bedi and
Deepa Sahi, besides her director husband Ketan Mehta.

The public is also reported to be looking forward to seeing the movie because
of its elaborate
costumes and opulent sets, reflecting 19th century India.

Music maestro A.R. Rahman and the veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar have scored the
music and
lyrics of the movie. (ANI)

[arr] Mangal Pandey: None of the songs, except Mangal Mangal, are any good

2005-08-12 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Thanda matlab Mangal Pandey

Audiences said they would return for another viewing, only because of Aamir
It’s finally here — the film that everyone’s talking about. The film for which
Aamir Khan grew
his hair and moustache; the film from which Aishwarya Rai was dumped; the film
that was
expected to be worth every bit of the four-year-long wait since Aamir’s last
release.

But does Ketan Mehta’s, Mangal Pandey — The Rising, live up to all the
expectations?

We were with the audience yesterday evening at the film’s premiere at the Inox
multiplex at
Nariman Point and the initial response seemed just like Aamir’s favourite cola
— thanda.

Audience restless

Aamir Khan and his ‘Rising’ gang greeted the theatre crowd before the film
began, saying, “We’ve put in a lot of effort in the film.” But that didn’t
really matter to the
audience who seemed quite restless in the first half, with some people even
walking out during
the film’s songs.

Aamir plays the lead role of the revolutionary, Mangal Pandey, who, in his own
way, triggered a
mutiny among the Indian sepoys working for the British army in 1857.

The add-on characters come in the form of English actor Toby Stevens who plays
Gordon, a
kind-hearted British officer and Heera (Rani Mukherjee), a prostitute Mangal
falls in love
with.

‘Boring, too long’

Says 21-year-old Akash during the intermission, “The impact is not even half as
good as Lagaan.
The story drags and becomes a bore.” His friend, Nirmal, adds, “The look of the
film is also
very artificial. It doesn’t look like the film is based in 1857. It looks more
like a costume
drama.”

A R Rahman’s score seems to have come in the line of fire — yet again. “None of
the songs,
except the soul-stirring Mangal Mangal, are any good. In fact, they detract
from the film,”
states Monisha, who came to watch the film with her sister.

Some feel that the film’s length (18 reels) is the main culprit. “Nowadays,
we’re used to
seeing films that are short and snappy,” says Uttam Chand Sahni, who drove from
Santacruz to
watch the film.

‘But great climax’

But there is a silver lining to this cloud too. “The climax was very good.
Aamir was
exceptional in the last 30 minutes,” says Raj. His colleague, Dominic, adds,
“The last scene of
the film, where Mangal Pandey is hanged publicly, has a solid impact.”

Adds Sujal, while walking down the stairs after the film is over, “Why did
Aamir have to wait
for four years for this film? It’s not ‘Rising’, it’s surprising.”

But Kanika can’t stop gushing about Aamir, “He’s just outstanding. I’m going to
see the film
again, just for him.” Her sister Lata adds, “He makes the film much better than
it actually
is.”

The fate of the film will only be decided after the long weekend is over, but
right now, it’s
running to packed houses all over, with the film getting a record-breaking
initial all over.

Aamir Khan’s charisma has drawn in the crowds for sure. The crowds just have to
last.

[arr] MANGAL PANDEY IS OK.

2005-08-12 Thread gomtesh

Hey guys.

Saw the movie first day first show. The movie is good but
not extraordinary.Aamir Khan is the only reason why one can watch the movie. He
is brilliant through out. This movie was so hyped and aamir had not been seen
for four years is quite surprising I must say. Coming to the music.ARR is just
brilliant but one gets the feeling that none of the songs were required.Infact
the most disappointing was takey takey. The picturisation was ridiculous and was
nothing what we expected. Also it was hardly a couple of minutes.Al Madath
Maula was also very short.Rasiya was awesome(Man ,she is hott!!).Main Vari Vari
was kinda ok.Holi song was very boring and also was not required. Overall Ketan
Mehta could not justify for these master pieces.

But hey some scenes in the movie were real gems. The last
half an hour or so will truly move you. Toby Stephens is also brilliant in the movie.
The most irritating part in the movie was the elephant and the folks on it
singing the mangal mangal song. (Its like wherever you go the elephant follows!).And
at the end rani mukherjee goes to fight which was very silly.

Nevertheless a great effort by the team. Go watch it once,
but dont expect too much. I thought the movie lacked the quality that
was in lagan or swades. But again Aamir Khan is the entertainer. Just awesome. Also
there wasnt much of background score except for a few samples here and there,
good ones and the closing credit music was great.Overall a decent movie which
should be watched. See ya

[arr] Arrfans.com - Updates - Lot of work to be done...

2005-08-12 Thread Neil Panchal
Hello dear Rahmaniacs,

The site will have the following sections. Their status:

Main Page: 100 %

Biography: 100 %

Articles: 100 %
- Music Reviews: 100 %

Albums (Discography): 80 %

More: 20 %
- Downloads: 75 %
- About Us: 0 %
- Support Us: 0 %
- Search: 90 %
- Contact Us: 100 %
- Misc ... 0 %

So, the main sections are almost completed. My classes begin on 21'st
Aug and I will be extremely busy in the upcoming week. I still have to
do a lot of work. Moreover, I have technical problems with the PERL
modules installed on the server. Especially, the IMAGE::MAGICK (mind
the 'K') module that dynamically creates thumbnails for uploaded album
images. (I cant manually edit each and every album image with
photoshop !). Please, if someone from the group is familiar with PERL
module installation, contact me ASAP.

I cannot project the date of release but I will do my best to make
this dream come true. A little secret that I need to vent out - I will
be posting a proposal for official editors for the site in next few
weeks. I need support of a few dedicated fans in this group who can
contribute some time (very little). More details coming soon...

Unfortunately, the server will be upgraded in October since the lease
term ends in September 2005. But I guess, it wont be a big issue as
far as launching the site is concerned.

I need your support. Please post any comments/suggestions.

Long live ARR !

Sincerely,

Neil Panchal

 Hello people,

I'm Ramkumar and I joined this Group today. I've read many
discussions about ARR in this group and I feel extremely happy and
proud to be a part of this Ardent fans of our Boss, A R Rahman!!!

I have met ARR twice in my life (till now). I will share those
precious moments with you all.

#1) I had been at the India Pistols ground, Chennai, on the
rehersal night before the Unity of Light programme on Feb 21,2003.
Our Boss came down from the stage (for his dinner @ 11:30 PM) and went
into a small tent behind the stage. Me and my brother followed him
behind the stage and waited outside the tent for more than an hour to
see him closely. Finally he came out of the tent and gave his
Dharshan. It was his greatness to put his Autograph on a visiting
card !!!

#2) There was a function last month to honour the legend music
director of 60s/70s in Tamil - M.S.Viswanathan. Maestro Illayaraja
also presided. Newspapers gave advertisments that our Boss would also
come. But I thought, he would'nt come, amidst his tight schedule. But
to every one's surprise, he came to the stage and there was a lot of
Buzz after his arrival. (I will describe the speeches of people on the
dias and our boss in my forthcoming mails).

Why don't we host an official
dedicated website for our Boss ???. For instance for Illayaraja, there
is a very professional website: www.raajangham.com. It has lot of
articles, samples, News about Raja. For Superstar Rajnikanth, there is
www.rajnifans.com. Here, it has stylish video clippings from his
movies.

Why don't we have these kind of a site for our boss ??? Please pour
in some ideas how we can go about this. I am sure, we the hardcore
ARR fans, can definitely make it happen !!!

 Cheers,
 Ram
