REVIEW: MANGAL PANDEY - THE RISING
08.11.05
By Devin Faraci

csaLast month McDonalds had to pay out lots of money to Hindu and vegetarian
groups because
they had been using beef fat in their French fries and keeping it a secret
(they haven’t
changed, by the way, so if you’re a vegetarian who gets fries at Mickey Ds
while your carnivore
friends chow down on Big Macs – oops). Today that sort of stuff leads to law
suits – a hundred
and fifty years ago it led to an armed uprising.

Mangal Pandey: The Rising is a rousing epic that recounts the birth of India’s
independence
movement. In the 1850s India was ruled by the Dutch East India Company, and
their army was
largely made up of sepoys, native Indian soldiers. It’s astonishing to think
about – a
corporation running an entire country – until you open up the newspaper and
read about American
politics. At any rate, the Company has total control over the Indian
subcontinent and is
celebrating a hundred years of rule when they introduce a new rifle that fires
a new kind of
cartridge. Rumors hit the sepoys that the cartridges, which they must bite to
use, are greased
with beef and pig fat, making the idea of putting them in your mouth horrifying
to both Hindus
and Muslims.

Mangal Pandey is one of the sepoys, and the best friend of Englishman William
Gordon, who has
spent half his life in India and considers that country his home. When Gordon
assures Mangal
that the cartridges go nowhere near fat, the sepoy uses it – but soon it is
discovered that
animal grease is indeed used. Enraged, Mangal leads the sepoys in an uprising
that cannot hope
to succeed. And we know from the beginning of the film, where Mangal is led to
the gallows (as
well as even a cursory knowledge of world history, you goddamn isolationist
American
ignoramuses), that it doesn’t. But all revolutions need martyrs (and I know I
am getting out of
hand with the parentheticals here, but it’s interesting that the rebellion that
began the
crumbling of the British Empire, which would be complete with India’s
independence in 1947,
didn’t actually have any real martyrs. There are those killed at the Boston
Massacre, but even
a little bit of reading about the incident will let you know most of those guys
were drunken
douchebags and the whole thing was an accident. Not really ideal martyrdom
circumstances), and
the death of Mangal Pandey ignites a flame that Gandhi would carry over the
finish line 90
years later.

There are a lot of things that are remarkable about Mangal Pandey: The Rising,
chief among
which is the cinematography. It’s a gorgeous film, drenched in color and
beauty. From scenes
with a thousand troops massing to a simple close up of the face of the
rapturously lovely Rani
Mukherjee, director Ketan Mehta and his DP Himman Damija have triumphed,
breathing splendor
into every frame.

Like all the great epics, Mangal Pandey: The Rising takes a huge, sweeping
story and puts a
human drama in the foreground. Here it’s the friendship between Gordon and
Mangal. In fact, I
may be soft pedaling it as a friendship. These guys – well, they spend lots of
time kind of
peering into each other’s eyes. I know, I know, the brotherhood of battle and
the love of men
and all that, but jeez. Aamir Khan has a fiery presence as Mangal, and Toby
Stephens, who plays
Gordon, looks exactly like a young Richard Chamberlain. It’s sort of spooky.
And it sort of
kept making me think this was a miniseries.

As did the running time. Mangal Pandey: The Rising runs a very full two and a
half hours. The
story is fantastic, and you barely feel the running time until there’s a
dramatic moment,
everything freeze frames and the word “Intermission” comes up on screen.
Suddenly you realize
you have a lot more to go.

Which isn’t a bad thing! Again, I fell in love with the movie and with the
story. I was
completely wrapped up in the 19th century India that had been created. I was
happy to float
with the sumptuous visuals. But this being an Indian film, there are a number
of songs, and
this being a big budget film in general, there’s a pointless love subplot or
two as well. I
didn’t mind the songs – in the beginning they didn’t get in the way of the
film. Our heroes
didn’t break into song, but every now and again some guys on an elephant would
come through the
film and sing about whatever was going on. It was the sort of scenes where
music could be
accepted – at a marketplace bazaar, for instance. In the second half of the
movie, things
change. First of all, with the new awareness of the running time you realize
each song is
making the movie drag on longer. Secondly, Mangal starts singing and dancing.

I wasn’t sure if I liked that at first. Then I realized what was happening. The
first half of
the film is like some sort of Merchant Ivory film, and that’s because Mangal is
really a
subject of the British. He’s a white guy wannabe. But in the second half he
discovers his
Indian nationalism

'Mangal Pandey' Movie Review

An Aamir Khan starrer has been awaited for the last four years! The talented
actor who is known
for his perfection skills as an actor gave us brilliant back to back
performances with films
like GHULAM, SARFAROSH, DIL CHAHTA HAI and the Oscar Nominated LAGAAN. When
MANGAL PANDAY-THE
RISING was announced the hype surrounding the film was extraordinary even
before the movie even
took off.The combination of Aamir Khan taking on a larger than life
heroan
international canvasthe countrys current top actress alongwith the BEST
technical
team...the film had all the recipes to become a CLASSIC-does MANGAL PANDAY-THE
RISING live upto
expectations? In one word...YES-although it does have some minor blemishes!

qry_getOurMovieReviewById.title The film revolves around Mangal Panday(Aamir
Khan)-an Indian
sepoy serving in Britans East India Company. Mangal becomes close friends with
his commanding
officer Gordon(Topy Stephens) after he rescues him in a war in Afghanistan.
Gordon is a kind
hearted officer unlike his other white colleagues and shows sympathy towards
the local indians.
He understands whats happening around him is unjust yet can't disobey the
orders given by the
army. He helps Mangal in every way possible where he can...

The story takes a sharp turn when the British Army introduce a new set of
rifles. In order to
operate the rifles the Sepoys are required to bite the bullet before they load
the gunpowder.
The cartridge itself is soaked in beef and pig fat and both the Hindus and
Muslims refuse to
use the cartridges on religious grounds. Gordon, unaware that the cartridges
are actually
soaked in Beef and Pig believes his superiors and tells Mangal that they are
not soaked in
anything. Mangal trusts Gordon and bites into the cartridge and uses the
rifle...

Soon after Mangal learns the truth..A angry Mangal revolts and here begins a
war that shakes
the very ground that the British rule on. A small spark was all that was needed
and Mangal with
his army starts the rebellion that led to the end of East India Companys
regionand 90 years
later an end to British rule!

A story of this magnitude needs to grip the viewer from start to end and has to
be able to
connect with the viewer-if the viewer loses interest the film will fall
flat(witness KISNA).
Farrukh Dhondys writing is absolutely superlative and he manages to ensure that
the viewer is
hooked throughout from the very first scene to the last. The film moves at a
breakneck pace
which leaves the viewer in awe.

Making a film about a historical figure is always difficultapart from
remaining true to
History the team also has to take into account cinematic liberties and
entertain the viewer.
Ketan Mehta succeeds in bringing to life the tale of Mangal Panday. He doesn't
deviate from
history yet doesn't preach and bore the viewer either. He manages to transport
the viewer to
the 1800s from the very first scene and is completely clear on what he is
making. As a director
this is the second time Mehta has made a film on a Historical hero after Sardar
Vallabh Bhai
Patel and again he emerges a winner. The story is complex-but the manner in
which the film
unfolds is easy enough for the viewer to decipher which again is credit to
Mehta. One does feel
that some songs are unwarranted and could've done with a chop-but then keeping
in mind that
this is a Bollywood film this can be overlooked. Also the strikingly beautiful
picturisations
of the song completely engulf the viewer. Another flaw I found was that many of
the sub plots
were under developed. Specially the Mona Ambegaonkar track. Even the track of
Amisha Patel acts
like a weak link in the movie and it fails to connect with the viewer at all.

There are many instances in the film which will have the viewer in bursts of
claps and cheers
and Ketan Mehta hits the viewers patriotic nerve dead on! Scenes that will be
etched in the
viewers minds after the film is finished include..

* Aamir Khan rescuing Rani Mukherji and the fight that ensues with him and an
British Officer *
The consequent fight in jail where Aamir gets beaten to a pulp and the officer
asks him to say
TU EK KUTTA HAI. The scene had the entire cinema in bursts of claps and
whistles * Toby
rescuing Amisha Patel from the burning pyre * Aamir Khan biting into the pig
and cow fat soaked
cartridge * Aamirs confrontation with Toby at his house intermision point * The
1-10 countdown
and Aamir walking upto the cannon screaming FIRE(again a thunderous response) *
Aamir taking on
the entire regiment alone and then trying to commit suicide and finally * The
death of Mangal
Panday which itself is a piece of cinematic history..word!

The scenes mentioned above alone make the movie a MUST SEE and demand repeat
value. Although
rumours perists that Aamir kHan has ghost-directed the movie, but rumours will
be
rumours...FULL CREDIT must be given to Ketan Mehta who has no

[arr] Mid-day reviews Mangal Pandey

2005-08-13 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Hallah mat bol, Mangal Pandey

Mangal Pandey ** 1/2
Dir: Ketan Mehta
Starring: Aamir Khan, Toby Stephens, Rani Mukherjee and Amisha Patel

The Plot: Director Ketan Mehta sweeps you back to 1857 when India was still
grappling under the
might of the East India Company. Indian soldiers spread across the country
fought wars for the
British in mute silence, despite living in penury themselves.

Mangal Pandey (Aamir Khan) is just another sepoy, ready to lay down his life
for the force. His
best friend is a white man, Gordon (Toby Stephens), whose life Mangal has saved
during a battle
in Afghanistan.

The problems begin when the British introduce a new rifle, which has its
cartridges smeared
with animal fat. Mangal and his entire regiment revolt against the new
cartridges on religious
grounds.

What begins as a mere rebellion against artillery eventually translates into a
nationwide
movement. Mangal Pandey is punished for his actions and subsequently hanged but
he succeeds in
laying down the foundation for an upcoming freedom struggle.

What to Watch For: Mehta succeeds to a great extent in establishing the
friendship between
Pandey and Gordon, which is the primary element in the first half of the film.
The subtle usage
of humor is also refreshing.

Scenes like Gordon and Pandey pulling off pranks after getting blown over
bhaang; the
camaraderie between Mangal and a low-caste sweeper; the director’s narrative on
the opium
trading by the Company.

The second half is when the action begins, leading to a rousing climax, which
is the best part
of the film.

Mangal Pandey’s unmitigated defiance at Behrampore is soul stirring, as is the
scene where
Pandey’s regiment surrounds the British force with lanterns. The last scene of
the film that
shows Pandey’s public hanging has a lingering impact.

Aamir Khan establishes his position as one of India’s finest actors yet again —
such fine blend
of brooding intensity coupled with a restrained display of frustration and
vulnerability is
rare.

His impassioned plea to his fellow soldiers in the climax is a treat to watch.
Toby Stephens
matches him at every step and performs with equal finesse, despite the language
barrier.

The Sore Points: The story of Mangal Pandey’s rebellion didn’t need 18 reels —
but to elevate
the flow (probably to create an epic-like feel), Mehta adds in fictitious plots
and events with
a screenplay that’s thoroughly predictable and dreary.

For the international audience, this is a treat because Mehta offers everything
they love to
devour about India: poverty-struck villages, caste differences, public
auctioning of women;
there’s even a Sati scene and a colorful Holi. At times, the film looks like
just a glossy
version of Manoj Kumar’s Kranti (don’t miss Tom Alter).

The dialogues could’ve been less corny — try this: Mangal telling Gordon,
“Sadiyon ki ghulami
ney hamare dimaag mein jung laga diya tha. Zara si charbi ney saaf kar diya.”

Or when a British officer is told, “Sir, yeh log goli bandook mein nahin
dalenge,” he turns
around and asks, “Toh phir kahan dalenge?” Spare us the drama Ketan — what’s
with Aamir-Rani
sindoor scene in the jail or the filmi sword-fighting contest between
Aamir-Toby that looks
straight out of Dharam Veer?

Both Rani Mukherjee (who plays Heera, a prostitute in love with Mangal) and
Amisha Patel (the
widow who’s ‘protected’ by Gordon) have nothing to do — were these characters
real or just
added for the glamour quotient? Rahman’s score is a huge letdown except for the
Mangal Mangal
number.

Analyse That: Sadly, The Rising has a very masala look and feel to it and that
may be its
biggest undoing. Kiran Kher’s low-cut blouse in her introductory scene reveals
new facets of
her personality. Rani’s red chiffon-draped (with laces) mujra is reminiscent of
Zohrabai from
Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, with even the kotha looking as glamorous.

Mehta also adds an item number with two girls furiously gyrating and rubbing
their bodies
against one another. And the actors playing Nanasaheb Peshwa’s messenger, Rani
Lakshmibai and
Tatya Tope look like brand ambassadors of Maganlal Dresswalla.

The Verdict: Now we’re sure that Bhavni Bhavai (later remade as Mirch Masala)
will remain Ketan
Mehta’s first and last pioneering effort. As for The Rising, it’s a modern-day
Kranti — only
Aamir Khan makes the difference. The film is worth it only for him — the actor
of the year.

We neglect our cities at our peril. For, in neglecting them, we neglect the
nation.

[arr] Bachchan, A R Rahman being roped in for Taj function

2005-08-13 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Bachchan, A R Rahman being roped in for Taj function

Agra, August 13: Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and famous music director
A R Rehman are
being roped in for the grand finale of the International Taj Year near Mehtab
Bagh here on
September 27.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting today presided over by
district magistrate
Sanjay Prasad.

Permission for the function, being organised by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism
Department, could be
taken by the state government from the Supreme Court, Prasad said.

He said noted film and stage artistes including Amitabh Bachchan and A R Rahman
were expected
to take part in the function commemorating the 17th century monument of love.

Meanwhile, tourism committee president S I H Zaidi has asked for the annual urs
of Shah Jahan
and Mumtaz Mahal to be included in the Taj celebrations.

A national environment engineering institute team has inspected the proposed
site of the
function with a view to assessing the pollution effects it could have on the
Taj Mahal. Its
report would be released shortly.

The district administration has promised to compensate farmers whose standing
crops could be
adversely affected by holding of the function on land leased to them.

We neglect our cities at our peril. For, in neglecting them, we neglect the
nation.

[arr] SKJ reviews Mangal Pandey

2005-08-13 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Khan rises as 'Mangal Pandey' falls flat
Saturday August 13 2005 16:35 IST

Subhash K. Jha
IANS

You have to hand it to Aamir Khan. He does deliver a polished performance.
From head to toe,
he's tanned in what looks like a light shade of boot polish to play that marvel
from the
freedom movement, Mangal Pandey, who, it is rightly believed, pioneered India's
long struggle
to liberty from British rule.

Often the script's searing and vicious vagaries get more oppressive than the
brutal Gora Log
(white people) who stand around in costumes that seem to have just been bought
off the shelf.
Wearing their red uniforms in a display of subverted Nazism, the colonial
brigade in Mangal
Pandey: The Rising (shouldn't that have been The Uprising?) is like a drill
for a play on
uniformed travesty.

There is no lived-in feeling to the characters, specially the white-skinned
ones. Cosmetic
colonialism was just fine in Manmohan Desai's Mard where the mighty Bachchan
had towered over
the sneering foreigners like a charismatic colossus.

But here? We credited Mehta with more subtlety than is obtainable the entire
peppery
red-and-pastel length and breadth of this patriotic whipped-cream of a yarn.

Frequently, the build-up within a sequence is of far more consequence than its
culmination and
final motivation.

Specially problematic is the Aamir-Rani liaison. The courtship, mimicking the
Devdas-Chandramukhi relationship (he flinches when the prostitute tries to
touch him) lacks
essential verve.

Rani's character of the prostitute is completely inconsistent with history and
with the film's
mood. One minute she's being auctioned in the market place, much to the disgust
of a British
woman, the next minute she is doing a pouty, lip-biting bosom-heaving mujra
(courtesan's
song) in Madame Kirron Kher's elaborately done-up brothel (a touch of Sanjay
Leela Bhansali's
Devdas).

Rather than play the prostitute's character for poignancy, Rani makes Heera
saucy and
playful...a kind of Babli (the frisky character she played in Bunty Aur Babli)
of the flesh
trade.

Surprisingly, Amisha Patel's briefer cameo as Jwala comes off comparatively
well. The sequence
where the British officer Gordon followed by Mangal, rescue her from being
burnt alive during
the barbaric sati ritual, is shot in exquisite tones of white, blue, orange and
sepia. She
later has some truly tender moments with her white saviour.

You wish there was more of the Jwala-Gordon relationship rather than the just
mandatory love
scene (albeit done aesthetically) where a lone tear rolls off the rescued
damsel's eye.

Appealing visuals do not constitute a powerful narration. Ironically, Gordon
comes across as a
far more tenable and magnetic character than Mangal Pandey. The conscientious
white man's
colonial dilemma is brilliantly etched by Toby Stephens, an actor we have seen
little of but
would love to see more of in future. This is the first time that a foreigner in
a Hindi film
gets applause without the audience knowing what he says!

Aamir's moustache, hair and bulging eyes do all the talking and screaming for
his historical
character. Whether it is a blemish in the script, characterization or the
actor, we don't know.
But Mangal Pandey comes across more as a cardboard hero than a true martyr of
independence. His
climactic hurrah where he is shown single-handedly taking on a raging battalion
of British men
is deftly shot, but swiftly shot down by the inconsistent editing.

The scenes written to spotlight Mangal's heroism are utterly ludicrous. I AM
Hindustan --
Aamir pompously pronounces to the princely gallery of supporters. He sounds
like a kid at a toy
store playing patriotic games.

Lacking a sense of intrinsic irony and utterly devoid of modesty, Aamir's
Mangal Pandey is a
surly, self-important comic-strip super-hero, rendered shadowy and inaccessible
by the actor's
inability to connect history with cinematic heroism.

Aamir's Mangal Pandey is martyr trapped in limbo.

Unlike Lagaan (a film to which Mangal Pandey bears absolutely no resemblance
except the
superficial) where the protagonist often stood in the shadows of the
screenplay's hierarchy to
finally emerge the single conqueror of screen space, in Mangal Pandey...
Aamir never quite
gets there. Shadowy, he remains.

There are awesome crowds of immaculately dressed supporting actors and junior
artistes surging
forward in a show of nationalist solidarity. Even Rani Mukherjee gets on a
horse to participate
in the climax (can't have the distributors complaining about her absence, can
we?) They look
like spillovers from a cricket match at the end of Lagaan.

What gets your goat is the wince-inducing moments of vulgarity. A peasant
operates the
hand-held fan for a sleeping British woman with groaning and repeated
masturbatory
movements...A man auctioning the prostitute Heera offers to pull down her
ghagra for better
customer satisfactionThroughout, the cleavage quotient is

[arr] Baz Luhrmann comments on A.R.Rahman

2005-08-13 Thread Vinod Raju

18 Jul 2005
Comment from Baz Luhrmann (director, Mouline Rouge)

I had come to the music of AR Rahman through the
emotional and haunting score of 'Bombay' and the wit
and celebration of 'Lagaan'. But the more of AR's
music I encountered the more I was to be amazed at the
sheer diversity of styles: from swinging brass bands
to triumphant anthems; from joyous pop to West-End
musicals ('Bombay Dreams'). Whatever the style, AR
Rahman's music always possesses a profound sense of
humanity and spirit, qualities that inspire me the
most. Baz Luhrmann, noted Film Director, Sydney
(Australia), 14-July-2005.

[arr] HT reviews Mangal Pandey; music continues to be pilloried

2005-08-13 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Rising to salute history

Mangal Pandey - The Rising
Cast: Aamir Khan, Toby Stephens, Rani Mukerjee
Direction: Ketan Mehta
Rating:

The rating stars are for the goosebumps one gets — for the man who sparked the
very first fire
of India’s struggle for Independence as also for the director who brings alive
a saga that
remains confined to a paragraph in school textbooks otherwise Mangal Pandey —
The Rising is an
epic. You enter the movie hall with the baggage of massive pre-release hype,
but when the story
starts to unfold, you realise that Aamir Khan is not actually a star but Mangal
Pandey, the
sepoy who revolted against the English in 1857. You also realise that Ketan
Mehta is not just a
big name but a good storyteller who simplifies a few historical nuances making
the movie an
easy experience and not just a documentary that we have to bear with.

The story is of an indomitable spirit called Mangal Pandey, a sepoy in the army
of the East
India Company. He is close to an English Captain William Gordon (Toby Stephens).

Pandey is also a loyal soldier — when new bullets are introduced with
cartridges greased with
cow and pig fat (blasphemous for both Hindu and Muslim soldiers) he is the
first to come
forward to use it when Gordon denies the rumour in public. The English had, of
course, told a
lie. When Pandey sees the grease being manufactured through his own eyes, the
simmering flame
in him rises. The historical fact, dismissed as a Sepoy Mutiny by the English,
is of utmost
importance for India’s eventual independence, and that’s where Mehta succeeds —
in presenting
the movie as such, though a few other historical details might be debatable. The
movie is tight,
moving from one scene to the other effor-tlessly and keeping the viewer
interested.

Aamir Khan is a delight, especially when he is all fired up. His flowing locks
and impressive
moustache add to the look. Rani Mukerjee, as a nautch girl, has not much to do.
Amisha Patel as
a rescued sati disappoints. Music by AR Rahman is not much to write about. In
fact, the Holi
track could have been avoided as it retards the movie unnecessarily. And yes,
please don’t
compare the movie with Lagaan, it’s a different film.

We neglect our cities at our peril. For, in neglecting them, we neglect the
nation.
-John F. Kennedy

[arr] Mumbai Mirror reviews The Rising

2005-08-13 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Fall of the Rising!
Saturday, August 13, 2005 | Entertainment

Mayank Shekhar

Film: Mangal Pandey – The Rising
Director: Ketan Mehta
Actors: Aamir Khan, Toby Stephens
Rating **
I think historians will agree with me on this. Given the lack of media at the
time of 1857, and
the barrage of it now, clearly Aamir Khan, the lead actor of this film, is a
far more famed
sub-continental icon than Mangal Pandey must've been in his heydays. And that's
a burden you
have to live with, in a biopic of a man about whom we know very little, played
by an actor with
an unbearably strong screen presence and image.
No wonder it appears Mangal plays Aamir here, and not the other way round.
One of the reasons there is little documentation of the martyred mutineer is
that he was hanged
by the British in April, 1857, while the revolt that Indian hagiographers
describe as the first
war of Indian independence (with the frail Mughal Bahadur Shah Zafar at the
head), kick-started
only in May. That its seeds were borne at the 34th Native Infantry where Mangal
served, is the
point of Mehta's tribute to a sipahi who some Western historians have referred
to as a
foolhardy bhang-consumer who led a xenophobic barbaric tribe that was accused
of loot, murder
and rape of Europeans and Christians.
Of course, we know Mangal as a patriot, who stood against the East India
Company over the issue
of rifle cartridges that he and his colleagues were meant to use, which were
coated with fats
of cows (considered unholy among Hindus) and pigs (deemed unclean by the
Muslims).
When such debates surround a protagonist from the past, presumably it's easier
to take
liberties over a historical account. As the film's foreword puts it, when
history turns into
folklore, legends are born -- or killed, as is the case here.
Yes, there's nothing blasphemous about introducing a fictional 'nautch' girl
(Rani Mukerji)
whom Mangal is supposedly in love with. Or a Brit sympathiser and friend
William Gordon
(Stephens - astoundingly adept) -- there are records of the existence of
Gordon, but not as
Mangal's mate. Or, a woman who is forced to perform sati (Amisha Patel) but is
saved by Gordon
and Mangal… All fine I guess, so long as we keep in mind that this is a fable,
not a factual
piece.
What's not fine is when the screenplay writer (Farrukh Dhondy, if I recall
right his last
'desi' work was Subash Ghai's Kisna with problems similar to this film) is way
too eager to
please with his bunkum brief of turning the narrative into a so-called
'Bollywood' movie. The
result is a subject that gets redundant with a part-carnival, part-crusade
approach. The
haphazardly assembled bore just ceases to grip you then and the message so
garbled missed me
for sure.
You do also end up overlooking some genuine gems in a film that's riddled with
inconsistencies
in the quality of performances, camera-work and situations, though it's mostly
second-rate all
the way.
But of course, it's also Aamir Khan all the way. Who is competent, no doubt.
But if Mehta was
so liberal with digressions in Mangal Pandey's story, I seriously wonder why he
couldn't create
characters that could also have given some depth to the mutiny, the subject at
hand. Or at
least lent some character to the unbaked, dumb-struck dodos who assist in the
uprising. This is
where Khan's precursor to The Rising, Lagaan had scored with its wit and vigour.
Unlike the sepoy mutiny, presented as a single man's campaign, cinema is
unlikely to succeed if
it's purely a one-man show. This is one of the most tenable testaments to that.

We neglect our cities at our peril. For, in neglecting them, we neglect the
nation.
-John F. Kennedy

But the major disappointment is the music score. AR
Rahman gives us an album with no shelf life...

The music score? One would expect critics to know the
difference between the score (or BGM) and soundtrack.

Never heard of ARR's association with Ada, nor heard of
Kazan. Anyway, good to know about this. We can expect Kazan
