[arr] Rehman on cloud nine
Everyone wrote off A R Rehman last year. He scored music for just one movie (Ah Aah) and could not be seen in Kollywood at all. There were reports that he had fallen out with director Shankar and hence the latter had Harris Jeyaraj scoring music for him in Anniyan. Bouncing back with vigor, Rehman is on the fast track to re-establish his supremacy in the Tamil film industry. He has joined hands with his old friend Shankar again for Rajinikanth starrer Sivaji. He has nearly half-a-dozen movies lined in Tamil which includes Godfather, Jillendru Oru Kadhal, a couple with S J Suryah and of course Kamal Haasan's Dasavatharam. Hi guys, I really don't agree with this guy. let me take from the first point that Rahman must take time to create melodious numbers. What I feel is that the music depends on the situation in the movie. You can't expect a melodious number in place of 'Dhakka Laga Bhukka' in Yuva. The situation demands a youthful enthusiastic and exciting music which Rahman has done successfully. Then that ARR must take renowned singers. Come on man , even the renowned singers would not have been what they are now had they not been given a chance to sing in movies. ARR is just trying to introduce new singers and give them a chance to exhibit their tallent. And about composing music for periodic movies. I think ARR has composed the best music for period movies 1947, Bose etc.. and even LAGAAN which was nominated for the OSCARS. So I really feel ARR has the same old magic and this year belongs to him. The more reknown singers in this album are Daler Mehendi and Lata Mangeshkar and they were the weakest singers on the album. The newer voices are really better. And none of them tried to use an anglisized accent like Shaan in his Mohabbat hai Mirchi song. I just cant stand that. 3) He has to tell his lyricists to write something which people can understand not something like Pathshala or Dakka laga bukka. I felt the same thing. The lyrics of Paatshaala sounded too much like those badly dubbed songs from his Prabhu Deva era. If the album's claim to the charts is this song, I really dont have much hope for it's success. But Koon Chala and even the lyrics of the title song are pretty neat. And Lalkaar has good lyrics too. It's just the supposedly chartbusters like Paatshaala that have cheesy, if not enjoyable, lyrics. 4) Dont do period films. He is himself saying he is done with it but again taking assignments for it. Well, besides Akbar Jodha and possibly Buddha, I cant think of any other period films he is signed up for. Maybe the mirage that is Mahabharatha. But seriously it doesn't make a difference. He can really create great period music like Iruvar and 1947. Right now, it's his contemparary work that seems to be suffering, like RDB and Anbae Aayuriye. He has to correct the above otherwise none of his album going to reach the top 10. Except Swades and Yuva none of the last 9 albums even reached 5 lakhs unit sell. For ARR album usually it picks in West and South. But now West has also rejected it. I really hope the JoK rocks. I dont have much hope with Shivaji, cos though Shankar albums become hits (which, I agree, Rahman really needs badly), he seems to get the worst out of his music directors. Indian, Jeans and Mudalvan were really weak Rahman albums with Boys just rising a little above these. And Aniyan is possibly Harris Jayaraj's worst album. Pity, cos he is amazing too. hi!! ok u do have a point there, but just try dancing to a song like Kehna hai Kya. It's not that Sir ARR is more keen to do westernised music, but he has to make a song that suits the situation in the movie. He himself said he hasn't sone any romantic movie for a while and that's y he coudln't compose romantic tracks like in Taal or Dil Se. About the lyrics, well, the same answer the song demanded those kinda lyrics. I mean y do we conviniently forget the track Hum hain iss pal yahaan? that was a romantic track 'coz the movie demanded itt, It was sheer melody, gr8 lyrics and it was a hit. It's when Sir ARR takes some more conventional romantc cinema, the ppl will stop criticizing his music. Your points are well taken and I too am not a fan of rap in Hindi songs, esp. with this Blaaze fellow. But, this guy asserts that his 4 points are the reasons that ARR's soundtracks are not selling well, which is a very narrow minded, arrogant, and limiting view. This I found ridiculous. Hi, I am a very silent and ,maybe, late member of this group. But just wanted to share my thoughts on this topic. I feel if ARR scores the same kind of music like he did in 90's (bombay, dilse..), there won't be any experimentation and he will no more be a trendsetter. ARR transcends well for the future age (what arr followed in 90's most MDs follow now), and thats what made him special. Talking about melodies.. How about the 3 songs in Tehzeeb and Swades..I think they were fabulous modern melodies. Did you get to hear Blaaze in any of those melody songs??? So obviously if the theme of movie is young ang hip, he brings in that experimentation, which is laudable. Finally what I want to convey is only because ARR keeps experimenting himself, he is unique. I feel thiruda thiruda is awesome. But does everybody feel, with Fanaah ARR has become a modern age rocker improvised than chandralekah? Just my thoughts. Didnt like the title song of RDB. Come on. Just try to sing the song, U will know its not an easy song to sing. The kind of energy that Daler has put into it is amazing. Paatshala does not have good lyrics. I dont know how good ur hindi is. If i was a college student. Probably I would sing paatshala. Watch the movie and then comment. I agree with you on the Blazee rapping part. I too am fed up of him. Raghu Absolutely. I am sick of hearing blaze or someonerapping over the songs. When Daler Mehendi harped onand on about how he sang the entire song in 5 minutes,our suspicions should have been raised. The "melody" numberTum Bin Bataye has some promising instrumentation butseems too cliched and tries too hard to be a melodynumber. [arr] RDB - amazing how each song has been declared a favorite
As I go around the net, gauging people's reactions to RDB's music, reading reviews, impressions, reading blogs (thanks to Gops!), I am just wonderstruck how each and every song from RDB has been declared a favorite by more than a handful of people. Whether it's the title song being seen as the best, or Paathshaala, or Rubaru, or Khalbali, or Lukka Chuppi, etc. etc., almost every song is a favorite of someone's. I think that says a lot about this very diverse and fresh soundtrack. The only track not declared a fav is Lalkaar, but that's not really a song. Despite sales being sluggish in certain key areas, I am really struck by the positive responses by many out there to this music. The negative responses are there too, but far, far outnumbered by positive reviews. I would say close to 95% of the reactions I am guaging from online users are overwhelmingly positive. I hope this overall positive reaction and good reactions to the movie do translate into higher sales, but I am noticing that soundtracks which appeal to urban folks generally don't sell well in interior regions. It's just amazing how Rahman reigns in such a response, regardless of sales. Interestingly, I am getting to like the song Khalbali more. I am reading more and more folks out there declaring this song to be their favorites andin some ways, I can see why. I didn't like the song at all when I first heard it, but it's pretty infectious. Hats off to ARR for an uplifting and fresh soundtrack that is putting joy into many people's hearts and making us simply rock. The album does deserve it's share of criticisms about absence of Rahman's usual thick layering and other points, but I have not seen such an overwhelmingly positive reaction to a soundtrack in a long time. Found this review on the net (mouthshut.com) and thought it was well written. And by the way, out of the 24 reviews on mouthshut, almost everyone has given the music 4 or 5 stars out of 5. _ When all else fails and has no meaning or comfort, there remains music. Rahman MINA, 12 January 2006 From a non-believer to a worshipper; from polytheist to monotheist; from Dileep Kumar to Allah Rakha Rahman, the famous music wizard has come a long way. This journey, he says, has completely changed his outlook toward life. Rahman is well-known in India. He revolutionized Bollywood music, giving it a new direction. But in Mina, the man was spiritually charged, relaxing in his camp after Isha prayers, remarkably very far from the rhythm of success. He said that in Indias film world, people change Muslim names to Hindu ones to get success but, in my case it was just the opposite from Dileep Kumar to Allah Rakha Rahman and Im very proud of it. Rahmans music is everywhere: in discotheques, in malls, at wedding parties, on satellite channels, in taxis. He is a celebrity in his own right. His face adorns the cover of every album he cuts. Autograph hunters hound him wherever he goes. A couple of companies have tried to lure him into product endorsements, but he refused, preferring to distance himself from the glare and the sometimes self-indulgent afterglow of fame. Such was his attitude when Arab News met him yesterday in Mina after a hunt of five hours that had started just after Maghreb prayers. Once a practitioner of idolatry, Rahman now talks about Islam like a scholar. He winced as he spoke about the ignorance of some Muslims and the divisions among them on trivial issues. Rahman, who has come to perform his second Haj with his mother, utilized every bit of his stay in Mina, Arafat and Madinah in prayer and remembrance of God to cleanse the inner self. He said Islam is a religion of peace, love, coexistence, tolerance and modernity. But due to the behavior of a few of us, its labeled as an intolerant orthodoxy. He says that the image of Islam is being tarnished by a small group of people and that Muslims must come forward to present before the world the correct picture of their divine faith. The enormity of their ignorance of the Islamic history and its code of conduct is mind-boggling. We should be united in fighting these elements for the cause of Islam, he said. Muslims should go to lengths to follow the basics, which say be kind to your neighbors, keep smiling when you meet others, pray and do charity. We should serve humanity. We should not show hostility toward others, even to the followers of other faiths. This is what Islam stands for. We should present before the world a model through our behavior, nature and presentation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) never used his sword to spread Islam; rather he spread the religion through his virtues, behavior, tolerance and righteousness. And this is what is needed to change todays distorted image of Islam. Talking about his Haj, Rahman said, Allah made it very easy for us. And up until now, I have enjoyed every bit of my stay in the holy land and I pray to Allah to accept my pilgrimage. For him, the stoning ritual is a physical exercise that symbolizes internal struggle: It means the defeat of temptation and killing the devil inside ourselves. I would like to tell you that this year I got the most precious gift on my birthday, Jan. 6. Allah gave me the opportunity to confine myself inside the Prophets Mosque in Madinah and pray all through the day. Nothing could match this experience and that too on my birthday; I am extremely delighted and thankful to Allah, he said. Rahman said that prayers release his tension and give him a sense of containment. He performs prayers despite heavy work pressure. I am an artist, but despite tremendous work pressure I never skip prayers, he said. I am very punctual in offering the days all five prayers on time. This releases me from tension and gives me hope and confidence that the Lord is with me, that this is not the only world. It reminds me of the Day of Judgment. Then under the guidance of one Muslim religious leader we prayed to Allah, which did wonder for my sister and she made a miraculous comeback to life. Thus, began my journey from Dileep Kumar to A.R. Watched Zinda yesterday and was pleasantly surprised and then pissed off when I heard the beginning of Lord An's Empire from WoHaE. Just the beginning vocal was used towards the end of the movie. No credit given of course. The movie itself was pretty neat and follows the story of OldBoy till, of course, the twist. Wow, Aravind. You cought me there. I respect your eye/ear for details. You see I'm like that too. I know these BGMs and I have ommitted them on purpose. You see what happens is when a movie is done in sync sound, like Lagaan and Swades, we are able to extract every single BGM, even if it's 10 seconds long, without any problem. Jeans is an older movie and is not done in sync sound. So, the BGMs have additional sounds in the Background. It takes an average of 3 to 4 hours to rip the background score from a movie, and maybe additional hour to edit them. First I have to watch the entire movie and rip the selectvie parts, then edit out the beginning and end, and in some cases like the The Fake BGM it is actually a mixture of 3 BGMs at different points in the movie. So, the BGMs you mentioned could have been ommitted for multiple reasons. And I'm picky about that myself. No matter how beautiful the BGM is, sometimes the additional sounds are put it in the background and all you hear is the additional sounds, or your attention is grabbed by the additional sounds. The Hospital BGM you mentioned... I had actually ripped that...but I eventually dropped it in the editing phase. It has a lot of beeps from the machine they were using on her. The BGM where he gets mad at the surgeons was recorded but was dropped in editing, because it is in a long room and Rahman sir has used the echo effect so you can hear everything they are saying, again spoiling the BGM. I Think I had ripped about 26 BGMs to start with, but I ended up with only 17, and that is common with non-sync movies. Hi Ajit, Just like I said at the end of my email So, at the risk of not being highly regarded with this group... and it was a self-fulfilling prophecy!! Yes, of course, every fan has his own set mind and feels that his favourite should follow his advice, cos he knows the best. But, like you said, this guy really is funny cos he demands ARR follow is advice. And to everyone I offended by putting down the Shankar movies music, it was my mistake I didn't add IMHO before the sentence!! Of course, I cant convince you that Indian is a bad album and you cant convince me that it is a good album. And I prefer Minnalae and Khaaka Khaaka and Ulam Ketkumae to Aniyan. I realised Aniyan was HJ's worst when I was making a playlist of my favourite HJ songs and I couldn't bring myself to include even one song from Aniyan, but that is a whole different story. Coming back to Rahman, yes, Hum Hai Is Pal Yahan was a masterpiece and I love the song. My mistake if I overlooked it. But to make the point that a couple of what this guy said was right, I was talking about what I felt was wrong. I said the lyrics of Paatshaala sound like bad Prabhu Deva era dubs. I still feel that's true. Not the music, the lyrics. So many Rahman masterpieces lost so much in translation during that phase. And that was the same cringe I felt when I heard Paatshaala. Of course, coming to the music of Paatshaala, it isn't definately that great either.IMHO!! And I'm surprised no one has attacked me attacking Tum Bin Bataye!! I forgot to mention that for the first time ever, when listening to a Rahman song for the first time, I could almost hum the next line's tune. That was how generic the song felt. It never happened to a Rahman song ever. I cant think of anyone who could guess the next line's tune for any Rahman track when hearing it for the first time. But this one, I could. All in all, my gripes are with RDB. Maybe the title song is difficult to hum, but that doesn't necessarily make it good. Maybe it's catchy, but Rahman has made better bhangra with TLoBS. Do a check of Rahman's releases in 2005. You had Anbae Aayuyire, Bose, Kisna(?), The Rising, Water and RDB. My point, that is contempary music is suffering is cos AA and RDB were not up to par whereas Bose, Kisna (his tracks), The Rising and Water were special, very special. Sorry to ramble on and on, but I was listening to an REM interview yesterday and they asked Michael Stipe why it was that they are now not as popular in the USA as they were before. To this he said that from the beginning they have followed their own trajectory, with respect to the music they made and that the popular music in USA was on a different orbit. Every once in a while the two paths meet and that is when they have a surge of popularity. I feel this is true for Rahman as well. For me, I always seemed to like the songs that weren't the most popular. When Tanha Tanha was the most popular song in Rangeela, I preferred Kya Kahe Kya Na Kahe and Mangta Hai Kya. When Humma Humma was the most popular song from Bombay, I preferred Poovukenna Pootu.
