So I went with my dad. mom and brother to get the tickets for the
concert (from LandMark). It was Rs.250 ticket. After we got the
ticket, we just thought of going and seeing the stage and light
arrangements for the next day's concert. Our car approached slowly
near the ground. Heavy police security. Crowd near the gate. But I

No joke. He is simply great. The speaker system was amazing. It was
like another "mini" stage in front of the main stage. (Slightly
inside the audience chairs). I then realized that live "mixing" was
not an easy job. That too for our Boss's songs!!! When Keith Peters
struck pieces from his instrument, the whole air was filled with low
frequency "Base". Simply Amazing!

cold. I saw our Boss preparing for something. I and my brother went

right time for us to get his "AUTOGRAPH". We followed him. Many
would'nt have noticed his slipping from the stage. There was a tent

gathered a pen and got my dad's visiting card for his autograph. But
I was not sure if he will like to write on a visiting card. He proved

This is what v need than other comparisons.. try to write more for others also who hv these chances to meet our Boss ARR. Also i fellow is work'g under maniratnam and I request him to write more of his experience in this group for us. - kulo

Though the time I was "literally" close to him was just few minutes, it is a dream for a "die hard" fan like me (rather it is a dream for all of us in this group). I’ll narrate my experience and I feel very happy sharing this with our group:
>
>   It was Feb 20 - 2003. Thursday. India Pistols Ground, Taramani, Chennai. Around 9:00 PM. The day before the "Unity of Light" live concert. Four of our friends decided to go to the concert together. So I went with my dad. mom and brother to get the tickets for the concert (from LandMark). It was Rs.250 ticket. After we got the ticket, we just thought of going and seeing the stage and light arrangements for the next day's concert. Our car approached slowly near the ground. Heavy police security. Crowd near the gate. But I never thought our Boss will be in there, till I started to hear the sounds gradually filling my ears as we approached the venue. Then I decided, "I have to see him in there!!!";
>
>   I was skeptical whether I'll be able to make it inside, as there was already a crowd waiting near the gate to enter and have a "Dharshan" of our Boss. Seeing the excitement of me and my brother, my dad approached the gate security and showed his identity. WE WERE ALLOWED INSIDE. Man, I cannot explain that moment. I was walking from the back of the stage I could hear our Boss speaking something. But nothing went into my senses, as my only aim then was to "SEE" the musical icon of India.
>
>
>   Finally, "I SAW HIM". What a moment! Myself and my brother was simply standing and starring at him, unable to believe that it was a reality and not a dream.
>
>   The rehersal for Baba was going on. He was instructing the Dholak player: "Dippu Dippu Adi" (meaning, play the Dippu Dippu beat). He started playing and our Boss was fine with that. I was seeing a so many singers who have worked with Rahman roaming around near me. Shankar Mahadevan (who was on the stage for Dippu Dippu), Swarnalatha, Blaze, Hariharan, Vasunthra Das were there to mention a few.
>
>   Our Boss was wearing a black coat and he was keeping himself cool. (But a bit nervous I guess for the next day's concert). He had nearly 3 large keyboards (minimum 7 octaves) surrounding him. He was giving so many improvements to the song as the practice was going on. No joke. He is simply great. The speaker system was amazing. It was like another "mini" stage in front of the main stage. (Slightly inside the audience chairs). I then realized that live "mixing" was not an easy job. That too for our Boss's songs!!! When Keith Peters struck pieces from his instrument, the whole air was filled with low frequency "Base". Simply Amazing!
>
>   Rehearsal of many songs was on. It was 10:30. It was becoming cold. I saw our Boss preparing for something. I and my brother went near the stage out of curiosity. We guessed it has to be for his dinner. We were right. He was coming down from the stage. It was the right time for us to get his "AUTOGRAPH". We followed him. Many would'nt have noticed his slipping from the stage. There was a tent near by and he went in it. There was a plate on a table. But as soon as he went in, a screen was pulled and it covered the entrance. But as and when a mild wind blew, I was able to see our Boss in there. He did not start his food. He was having a casual chat with Suhasini (Maniratnam) and the event organizer. He did not have much food. Infact nothing, I could say.
>
>   Now came the moment. He was coming out of his tent. We rushed near him. Suddenly to my surprise (and anger) and few other fans thronged at him. I guessed they should've also waited like me outside and peeping. "Rahman and me" face to face, what a moment. I some how gathered a pen and got my dad's visiting card for his autograph. But I was not sure if he will like to write on a visiting card. He proved he is a great man. Did not tell anything. Gave a smile (what a smile) signed and proceeded on to the stage. Moment of my life. ! There is no necessity for a person like him to come out and have a minute with common people standing outside and sign on a bit paper. He is simply great!!!
>
>   The rehearsal proceeded. I was till 12:30 in the night. The other songs I saw in the rehearsal were "B to the A - BABA" by Blaze, "Porale" by Swarna, "Yeh Yeh enna acchu" by Vasunthra. All live. So close. So near. Great experience. Next day was the show. That was another great experience all together. The real concert was a great day, as I got my appointment order for my campus interview. Unforgettable moments !

Still.Indeed, due to such varied forces as the Internet, digital technology and continued cross-cultural pollination, more Americans are grooving to world-music styles today than they were 10 years ago. Or even five years ago.One form that has burrowed into the American pop-culture consciousness in the last couple of years is Indian music. And, within the broader Indian-music scene, one sub-genre getting attention is the fusion of classical Indian music with modern rhythms.  Perhaps the most accomplished of these fusionists is A.R. Rahman, who began his career as a writer of commercial jingles and went on to become India's most popular composer of film scores.Until the last year, Rahman's biggest claim to fame was his collaboration with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the London and Broadway productions of "Bombay Dreams'' in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Webber produced, Rahman composed the music. But Rahman's profile got even higher when he struck the seeming unlikely collaboration with the Finnish folk group Varttina to compose the music for the $23 million, four-hour-long stage production of "Lord of the Rings,'' which opened in Toronto on March 23.Rahman's unique synthesis of traditional Indian music with more contemporary rhythms inspired Sidney Fallon, wife of Eastern Michigan University president John Fallon III, to seek out a meeting with Rahman during a recent trip to India. Rahman and the Fallons had a mutual Indian acquaintance, and the three parties began discussing ways for young Americans to learn more about Indian culture. They decided on a pair of benefit concerts by Rahman and fellow Indian artists Sekar, Kalish Kher and Vasundhara Das. The first concert will be at the EMU Convocation Center on Saturday, the second in Dayton, Ohio on April 22.The show, "Wake Up! A.R. Rahman with 150 All Stars,'' will bring together Rahman's works on stage through colorful costumes and set designs, along with Indian and American singers and dancers. Rahman also will perform with the Global Rhythm All Stars, a group of more than 150 American artists that have performed with numerous Grammy-winning artists.Joining Rahman on stage will be cellist V.R. Sekar, founder of the Madras String Quartet; singer/actress Vasundhara Das; and singer/actor Kailash Kher. "I love his music,'' said Sidney Fallon. "I like that it's a wonderful fusion, which has a basic foundation in Indian music and then brings together a lot of different rhythms. Many of the songs he'll perform will be in Indian languages.''Fallon said that 70 percent of the funds raised by ticket sales will go to the creation of an endowment for a program that will "help our young people to gain a greater understanding of the world by studying Indian music, and culture.''Three filmmakers are also expected to be in town for the event, Fallon said. Rakeysh Mehra, director of "Rang da Basanti,'' will show the movie and talk to students, and music from the film will be performed at the concert. Ramkumar Ganeshan also plans to meet with students and faculty. And Swedish filmmaker Niclas Ribbarp expects to make a documentary about the project.  In India, Rahman has come to be known as the "Mozart of Madras,'' and, according to the BBC, he's sold between 100 million and 150 million CDs.He's also collaborated with a range of artists, from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to Michael Jackson to David Byrne to Sarah Brightman. But Rahman started out amidst much more modest circumstances. One reveler was Mani Ratnam, a leading Indian filmmaker. One thing led to another, and, in 1992, at age 25, Rahman composed the score for Ratman's film, "Roja,'' in the Tamil language. The score won acclaim in India for its fusion of classical and modern Indian music, and Rahman was on his way.Rahman's next several projects were also Tamil-language films, and he became known as India's leading Tamil film-music composer. From there, he turned to India's more commercial and cross-cultural Bollywood movie biz, composing the score to Ramgopal Varma's "Rangeela.''In 1997, Rahman found a global springboard for his talents when he signed with Sony Masterworks and released "Vande Mataram,'' a re-creation of India's national song that became an anthem of sorts among Indian youth. Sony released the record in 28 different countries.Fast-forward to 2004,

Dude...     You cannot expect every director to be a mani ratnam or shankar or subash ghai..no director wants  a bad remark about his film,he wud naturally try his best..     I dont understand wat do u mean by standard group..That so called standard group is wat represents tamilnadu..     for that kind of songs u cannot expect to bring in mumbai models and dance with the hero..        Infact i am too very disappointed that a great song like Aaraikodi didnt get the popularity it deserved..It was really a rocking of the composition from our rahman     and again here we have to be thankfull to surya..he was the one who forced, requested our rahman sir to sing the song..        Watever..lets wait for next s.j surya n arr combo to come..

i think there are more similarities between brian lara and a r rahman then rahman and sachin. becos sachin can b a bit predictable these days but lara like rahman is very unpredictable and alwaya delivers when it matters most like rahman. lara is the best in his country without a doubt like rahman is the best in india. tendulkar is challenged by dravid atleast in tests. lara has a certain grace while batting as if he is dancing on a rahman song. both are tireless and they love their job a lot. lara is known for playing long innings and rahman for working close to 16 hours a day.
