Dear friends,

When we set out to raise funds for the A.R.Rahman Foundation as
a gift for
  ARR's birthday, I
had only planned to send him an image of the cheque by email and
the
  physical cheque only by
courier. But when the contributions soared past anything I had
hoped for,
  I felt it was only
fair that it be handed over in person. And so, I set out to
Chennai on
  Saturday morning not
knowing if I would actually be able to meet him. Though by now,
we have
  seen enough evidence of
his simplicity I imagined being stopped by security guards even
before I
  could let him know,
all of which was completely unwarranted.

Thanks to the never-say-no graciousness of ARR and Vijay's
entreaties, I
  had the good fortune
of being your representative at the birthday celebrations of the
person
  whom many of us deify.
Far from being met with for a few seconds and summarily
dismissed, I was
  treated with the same
affection, care and love by everyone at his home and studio as
were many
  of the key
personalities of the industry who made their way to his abode to
greet him
  in person.

I made my way to his home with some navigational aid from Vijay
to only
  find a bunch of busy
workers setting up the place in preparation for lunch. When I
said that I
  had to meet ARR Sir,
I was asked to wait in the first floor of the studio which is
the building
  right in front of
his home. I made my way there to find many people doing the
same, some of
  them being Mr.
Srinivasa Krishnan of Global Rhythms, Sridhar Subramaniam of
Sony BMG,
  Naresh Iyer, executives
from WorldSpace and Saregama and producers from the Tamil
industry whom I
  did not recognize. I
could see gifts of flowers from a host of people from the
industry -
  Subhash Ghai, Udit and
Deepa Narayan, Rajkumar Santoshi, Bharat and Kanika, Chinmayee,
Radio
  Mirchi, Radio City were
some names that I managed to spot amidst the sea of bouquets in
the
  studio. ARR's right hand
men Noell James, Sivakumar, Swamidorai, Faiz and H. Sridhar were
also in
  attendance.

We were soon joined by ARR's mother, daughters, son, wife and
sisters and
  others in the family.
I soon realized that simplicity and humility runs through every
brick and
  body in his home and
studio. ARR still hadn't turned up and his mother insisted that
we must
  have lunch and we were
ushered back into his home where ARR joined us. Soon director
Shankar and
  family, Kathir,
Krishna (of SOK), Praveenkanth made their way in. After lunch we
made our
  back to the studio,
were ARR took us to a large studio room on the 2nd floor and
screened the
  video of Pray For Me
Brother. I am still searching for words to describe the multiple
  exhilarating emotions that
passed through me as I watched the video. Nothing we have heard
so far in
  the live performances
truly captures the brilliance of the recorded song. Who else,
but ARR,
  could have an Indian
classical harmony accompanying a rap segment?

Following this, both ARR and his son Ameen, who also celebrates
his
  birthday on the same day,
cut the cake jointly. While his son wanted to cut his
special 'Spiderman'
  shaped cake, ARR
decided his simpler cake was more appropriate :-)

Coming to the crux of my visit, it was the time after the
birthday cake
  was distributed and
everyone was leisurely seated around the studio that I chose to
hand the
  cheque over to ARR. I
wish I could say, 'Did we spring a surprise on ARR or what!' But
ARR
  instead sprang a surprise
on me! He looked visibly moved and said 'I have been telling
these folks
  what you guys have
been doing.' I went, Huh? And his response was, 'I was on the
group last
  night and saw all
these messages about a collection drive. You guys are increasing
my
  responsibilities now'. I
quickly assured him that he could count on our support in
anything that he
  wanted to do. he
then handed the cheque over to his mother and introduced me to
the rest of
  the people there.

He then asked, 'Don't you want a picture?'. I joked,

My film is not a bio-pic: Mani Ratnam
By Moviebuzz --Date-- --Happy News! Mani Ratnam,
one of the finest directors in mainstream commercial cinema is back with Guru
in Hindi and its dubbed version in Tamil. The path-breaking director is one to
be admired. He has kept the flag of uncompromised cinema flying against all
odds. Mani sir as he is affectionately called by friends, is a film maker
whose calling card remains his artistry and intellectual disposition. On the
eve of the release of Guru, sitting in his aesthetically done up posh office at
Boat Club area in Chennai, casually dressed in a blue jeans and a printed
cotton shirt, Mani took time off to speak exclusively to Sify.com.
  Any pre-release jitters?
(Laughs) Not at all. But as a producer like anyone else I am anxious. Guru is
getting premiered at Toronto on Thursday (Jan 11) at Elgin and Winter garden
theatre centre. It is the place where most Hollywood films are premiered and I
think that Guru will be the first Indian film to be premiered there.
How different is Guru from your earlier films
Guru is my 20th film in a career spanning nearly 24 years. It is the opposite
of Yuva, my last release as it is the journey of a single person. The character
is shown from his 15 to 70th year.
   Nayakan was also similar..
Yes to a certain extent, they are in the same genre as far as the concept of a
person’s life time from youth to old age is depicted.
What is the one-line story of Guru?
The tagline says it all- “ Villager, Visionary, Winner”. The story is about
Gurukanth Desai or Guru, a guy from a village, crossing all obstacles that come
his way and how he triumphs against all odds. Just after Independence up to the
70’s, the country as a whole was turning to the left of the centre. For a lot
of people, it had an old world charm about it. Suddenly Guru comes and shakes
the edifice as we see what happened, in the late 70‘s and 80’s. We became
individualistic and right of centre. It happened to us before we realize that
times have changed. In the film, we see all these changes through the character
of Guru.
There is an uncanny resemblance to the life and times of late Dhirubhai
Ambani the man who changed our system. Please comment
It could be anybody. I am definitely trying to connect the character with real
life. Why Ambani, it could

“I Don’t Fear The Public”
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, January 09,
2007]

I don’t fear the Public, I am the Public…This is one of the
catch-lines hogging attention in the newspaper advertisements of Mani
Rathnam’s ‘Guru’. The main catchline â€
Villager, Visionary, Winner….Continues to be the
mainstay…This has to be said that in its final stage of Herculean
Publicity, ‘Guru’ is definitely evoking curiosity that
goes beyond mere entertainment.

It’s being said that this is Abhishek Bachchan’s best
work. And if the promos are any testimony then Bachchan Junior surely
seems to be on top. In his young avatar flirting with Mayya Mayya oomph
doll Mallika Sherawat or singing Aishwarya duets with mountain
backdrops, Abhi looks hot. But it’s his transformation into the
industrialist, the leader phase that’s startling. His body
language when he screams: “Banna chahte ho is desh ki sabse badi
company” is spellbinding. And the paralytic moments with his
mouth clenched is stunning to say the least.

Some films are beyond Box Office. ‘Guru’ seems to be one
of them. Mani Rathnam’s ‘Yuva’ earned Abhishek
loads of Best Supporting Actor awards….Will ’Guru’
take him beyond everything else. Wait for January 12th….The
verdict will be out soon.

I would like to say that the background score of Guru
is very good. It brings out the aggressive and
determination traits of my protagonist. We have used a
lot of rhythms and voices in the music.

2007-01-09 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
It was quite a demanding role for Abhishek Bachchan in more than one sense. –
Mani Ratnam
Click here to add this article to My Clips
By IndiaFM News Bureau, January 9, 2007 - 10:14 IST
Though his last film Yuva didn’t meet with expectations at the box-office,
there was no doubt
that whatever came from Mani Ratnam had to be different. As his film Guru
releases this week,
Mani spoke to IndiaFM in an exclusive interview.

The tagline of Guru says ‘the most controversial man of the year’. Tell us
something about it?
I think that is what the film does. You add a tagline because that represents
the kind of film
it is. It is a man’s life and there are ups and downs, bright side, darker side
in it and it
does deal as to how he had to do it and why and what happens in the way you
take a call. So it
does in a way show the success story with all its shades.

Tell us about Abhishek Bachchan’s characters in the movie?
Abhishek plays the main, central character in the film, the whole film is seen
through the eyes
of Guru- from being a young boy to a fifty-five year old man. It is really a
huge, larger than
life character and it is a very significant role in the sense that he carries
the entire film
on his shoulders and I am extremely happy with the way the film has turned out.

Click here to watch the video
What about Aishwarya?
She has played a very earthy, village girl who gets married to Guru. It is a
very realistic
character and she has done it with real ease. She is really mature and has done
it remarkably
well.

Aishwarya is really mature and has done her role remarkably well.
What about Mallika Sherawat?
She is in the early part of the film, is there as a part of the song Mayya
Mayya as well.

Tell us something about A.R. Rehman’s music?
The film is really of fifty stages and we wanted the music which would be kind
of evoking that
period but would not be replica of that period. He has done the work which kind
of gives you
the flavour of that period, but still is contemporary and still is today. That
is the kind of
combination which is the same way, the film has been shot, the film has been
cut and things
like that. It evokes certain period but still is today’s nourish.

Which is your favourite track in the film?
Tere Bina.

How has been your whole experience of shooting a Guru?
It has done at one stretch practically of three months, so we had the entire
team with us, so
it was really very good, and it gives you the freedom. Abhishek had to grow. So
we shot the
entire film practically chronologically. So we started with the younger version
of and then it
slowly started building. As he grew, he had to put on the weight to become
middle aged and he
did that and he put substantial amount of weight and his looks carries of the
body language of
a middle aged person. Towards the end of the film he had to lose (weight)
again, which he did.
So it was really quite a demanding role more than one sense.

Like you said his look it really interesting.
Yes, I think it has worked out to a large extent because it looks very real in
a sense that he
comes through as somebody. He has performed so well that you cannot make out
which has been
acted out. It is just really a mature performance.

In which era does the film happen?
From the fifties to the eighties.

Why did not you plan any Tamil version like you did for Yuva?
I think there is too much of an effort to redo the film, to get one film right
is tough enough.

I think there is too much of an effort to redo the film, to get one film right
is tough enough.
The premiere is happening in Canada, how does it feel?
Good, it will be a little cold there but I am glad that an Indian film is
getting a mainstream
screen and a premier in Canada is fantastic.

What is the USP of the film, what do you think, why should people come and
watch the film?
I think Abhishek Bacchan has done a remarkable role. I think it will stand out
and I think that
will be enough reason for them to watch the film.

I think Abhishek’s performance will stand out and I think that will be enough
reason for the
audience to watch the film.
What are your expectations from this film?
To be the best.

What about next film?
Next is next, let us not worry about it. Let us get this correct and let us get
it on the road
and then we will get into the next.

It has been said that the film has been portrayed from the real life character.
Your comment on
it.
The film is fictional and there will be links to real life of several people
but that is how a
good fiction should be, it should connect to reality. So it will have
connections but it is
really a fictional piece of work, the characters are fictional, the situations,
the incidents,
the way it has built are all fictional.

[arr] Birthday present from Me to Rahman and the Group... Mix60

2007-01-09 Thread kaissiom
Hello Rahmaniacs,

Upon many requests, my promise to extend the original 20 minutes
medley to 60 minutes is now fulfilled. After months of work, in and
out of the project, combining some 120+ musical masterpieces, I have
been able to somewhat celebrate Rahman in 60 minutes of this musical
journey called Mix60 @arrahmanfans.

I was working on two separate projects, the 60 medley and a separate
mix just for his birthday. At the last minutes I decide to combine
both projects. The mix that appears towards the last 4 or 5 minutes
of the medley was supposed to be the 2nd project, but there you have
it, both projects in one.. over 64 minutes of musical journey with
Rahman.

Just like before, test your knowledge of Rahman's music see if
you can correctly identify all the musical bits. And if you can,
you certainly deserve a pat or two on the back because only some
dedicated fans would know all the music bits, unless you are a new
fan. The 20 minute medley had some logic to it...it was a little
easier to identify all the tracks, but you'll find that the rest of
the 60 minute medley is all kinds of things mixed together. So the
first 20 minutes are somewhat logical but the rest is just a mess...
I just did whatever I felt like... some parts have come off well..
others.. I just liked doing anyway.

So, here's my Birthday wishes to Rahman, I wish him joy and even
more success in life and hope he continues to mesmerize us the way
he has. Happy Birthday Rahman.

Rahman rules the charts with 'Barso re'
By IANS

New Delhi, Jan 9 (IANS) The fate of Mani Ratnam's long awaited 'Guru'
will be decided Friday but A.R. Rahman's music in the film is already
a hit, particularly 'Barso re' which rules the charts this week.

The top 10 Hindi songs are:

1. 'Barso re' - Film: 'Guru'; Music Director: A.R. Rahman; Singer:
Shreya Ghoshal. Shreya's voice adds a new dimension to the hugely
popular song about welcoming rain.

2. 'Crazy kiya re' - Film: 'Dhoom 2'; Music Director: Pritam; Singer:
Sunidhi Chauhan. The fast number, shot on Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik
Roshan, is a visual treat.

3. 'Maula mere' - Film: 'Anwar'; Music Director: Mithoon and Pankaj
Awasthi; Singer: Roop Kumar Rathod. This great romantic piece,
interspersed with Sufi elements, marks a comeback for Rathod.

4. 'Salaam-e-Ishq' - Film: 'Salaam-e-Ishq'; Music Director:
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy; Singers: Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Kunal
Ganjawala, Sadhana Sargam and Shankar Mahadevan. Lavishly shot in true
Yash Chopra style, the song is an ode to love.

5. 'Tere bin' - Film: 'Bas Ek Pal'; Music Director: Mithoon; Singer:
Atif Aslam. The love song burst on the scene months ago and listeners
are still to tire of it.

6. 'Main hoon don' - 'Don'; Music Director: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy;
Singer; Shaan. Stylishly shot on Shah Rukh Khan, the song has been
moving up and down on the list for months.

7. 'Toote huey dil se' - Film: Umrao Jaan; Music Director: Anu Malik:
Singer: Alka Yagnik. The short track expresses a lover's melancholy.

8. 'Subah subah' - Film: 'I See You'; Music: Vishal-Shekhar; Singer:
Zubeen Garg: Sung by Zubeen Garg of 'Ya Ali' fame, it's a carefree
song sprinkled with freshness and positivity. The film didn't do well
but this song has been liked by young music buffs.

9. 'Come on' - Film: 'Baabul'; Music Director: Aadhesh Shrivastav;
Singers: Amitabh Bachchan, Sonu Nigam, Vishal, Aadesh Shrivastava,
Ranjit Barot. The celebration song, picturised on the key actors, is
doing well in the party circuit.

10. 'Tere bin' - Film: 'Bhagam Bhag'; Music Director: Pritam; Singers:
Kunal Ganjawala and Sunidhi Chauhan. The film is a box office dud, but
the young are appreciating this sweet love song.
