[arr] Being Mani Ratnam

2007-01-23 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
There was an interview with Mani Ratnam on the show 'Being:' which was telecast
on CNN-IBN and
CNBC TV-18 several times last week. In the interview, Mani was asked what he
thought of the use
of Chaiyya Chaiyya in Inside Man. Mani narrated that, when they had to shoot
the introductory
sequence of Madhavan in Alai Payuthey, they originally thought of having him
listen to a
Backstreet Boys song on the walkman and approached the band for the rights. But
the band quoted
such an astronomical figure that they backed off and ARR composed Endrendrum
Punnagai which
went on to become a massive hit. When Spike Lee approached MR for the rights of
Chaiyya
Chaiyya, he apparently quoted a similar astronomical figure back to them but he
was pleasantly
surprised at his offer being accepted!

I live in the world's largest constitutional anarchy. Its called India.

[arr] I need some answers...

2007-01-23 Thread up84mouli
Hi Fans,

Excuse me for being off-guru with such a post as this...

Can someone try to answer these questions 'coz its bugging me for
sometime and I am not able to get a good relevant info on these...

1. What happened to the UOL concert DVDs? Will it EVER get released?

2. Whatever happened to a film called Chamki Chameli? Does someone
know about the current status about it?

3. Will there be a Guru BGM CD release as I heard sometime before?
Also, is the release of Provoked really confirmed??

4. Mani is supposed to go with IR again and he sort of confirmed it in
an interview. Whats up?

5. What are the next Rahman's FILM releases? Coz I know that he is
planning to release a couple of personal albums this year.

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks.
Chandra.

Hi Ramanand,

You are absolutely right, that song was picturised at Chalakudi,
Kerala, where in so many songs have been picturised earlier, Mani
made it look loke Srilanka.. thats what he does always..

[arr] Zakir Hussain - Rahman one of the best!

2007-01-23 Thread Ricky
The great genius Zakir Hussain - praises another - A.R.Rahman:

Who have been the best music composers in Bollywood?
If we consider the olden times, I am partial to my father's
compositions. But one of my favourite composers has always been Madan
Mohan for the Indian kind of film music. I have really liked Pancham
da's music. I think it was way beyond it's time. He was a fabulous
composer in terms of arrangement of songs– they had the melody of
Indian origin and orchestration of westernized origin. The kind of
music that is happening now in Bollywood was installed many years ago
by Pancham. I liked Laxmikant Pyarelal's music very much so I have to
say that these three have been my favourite composers. But in today's
world, where the music has so globally evolved, I must say that the
work of A. R. Rahman comes forth as one of the best. Shankar-Ehsaan-
Loy have also done us proud. They have done some fabulous music
compositions.
I don't know if I like the word Bollywood. It means we are paying
homage to Hollywood.

Do you think any music composer in Bollywood is overrated?
I don't think that a music composer can be said to be overrated.
Because we have to realize that what the composer is projecting in
the film is the director's idea. Ideally, the composer himself does
not get to execute his own thoughts, unless it is someone as able as
Rahman, who will present something to the director and the director
will say fine. I don't think music composers can be faulted for
whatever may go wrong with music because they are just doing what
they have been told.

Additionally one of the very interesting observations that I am a
total believer of:
Do you think the quality of Bollywood music is deteriorating by the
hour?
No I don't think so. I don't know if I like the word Bollywood. It
means we are paying homage to Hollywood. We are an industry by
ourselves, and the art work that is put out here is unique and one of
its kind. So we don't need to relate ourselves with somebody else to
be able to get the attention we deserve. The music in this part of
the world, I think, is much more intelligent these days. In the olden
days you had the classical music of India, and the singers who were
classically trained, that is why this one area of music that you
worked in and performed in was easy. O.P Nayyar saab recorded three
songs in a day because the formula was set – the number of
instruments, the procedure, and all. All the musicians knew exactly
what was to be done. But today, as you pointed out earlier, music
draws inspiration from much more than just Indian roots. And to be
able to incorporate so many elements from all over the globe in a 3-
minute song and to be able to do justice to each one of those
elements is a very difficult job. It requires a mind that is able to
absorb a multi-layered thought process and balance all the ideas in
the right way. That is why I say that today's music is much more
intelligent. And I must say that today's musicians and singers are
great. They have the range that is unbelievable. They can sing
between the lowest octaves to the highest octave and deliver the
perfect timber. The tone of each octave is equally balanced and well-
projected. Today's singer is a multi-faceted singer. In the olden
days when you wanted to do a sad song you had Talat Mehmood; if you
wanted to do a happy song you had Rafi saab. But today any singer can
do anything. And in that sense the musician today is much more well-
informed. Hats off to the composers – they are fabulous.

2. Chamki Chameli is in pre-production stage. Priyanks Chopra is
acting in main lead now with jimmy shergil.

3. Provoked movie is releasing for sure in feb-march. I don't

4. Do not believe in rumours. Mani and Rahman pair is surely gonna

[arr] One of the best songs of modern era - Pachai Nirame?

2007-01-23 Thread Ajit
Pachai Nirame (not Hindi version) continues to reign top as one of my
all time favorites and I vote it to be one of the greatest songs in
India of the modern era. The instrumentation, singing, feel,
aesthetics, soundscapes, just PURE MAGIC. I just listened to it and
it coninues to play heavy on my song rotations now for many years. An
evergreen powerhouse. What say?

[arr] Is 7digital genuine?

2007-01-23 Thread Thineshan
Hey guys, I spent about 3 hours in order to find that site, and I hope
it is of help to you guys. But I was just wondering if the site is
genuine? Does everything we pay go to whoever it should go to? or is
the site illegal and just selling out copies for their profit? I didnt
enquire about how genuine this site is, I just posted the site and 3
days later I found out that most of the people in this group bought it
from there already. So it will be great if some of you can clear my
doubt because I dont want to be a reason for you guys wasting ur
money. Have fun guys, the single is rocking!

[arr] Rakeysh Mehra ecstatic about BAFTA nomination

2007-01-23 Thread Thulasi Ram

http://www.indiaenews.com/bollywood/20070123/36663.htm

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 'Rang De Basanti' couldn't make it to the Oscar
nominations, but the director is thrilled that his film has been
short-listed for the prestigious British Academy Of Film and Television Arts
(BAFTA) non-English language award.

Earlier, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Devdas' had got the honour for 'film not
in the English language' category.

'Have you seen the other nominations?' Mehra said excitedly.

' 'Rang De Basanti' shares the list with Mel Gibson's 'Apocalypto' and Pedro
Almodovar's 'Volver'. We're in excellent company. I spoke to A.R. Rahman in
Toronto. He was thrilled. The entire team is over the moon. In fact, we're
putting together a documentary on the film where Rahman says 'Rang De...'
has changed his career,' Mehra told IANS.

BAFTA held screenings of the film, which has Aamir Khan and Soha Ali Khan
playing important roles, in Los Angeles, New York and London.

'I attended those screenings and also the extremely enlightening Q and A
sessions after the screenings. We kept talking until 1.30 a.m. In India we'd
have gone home. Just goes to show distances are being bridged not just in
the corporate world but also in the entertainment business.

'The thing about BAFTA is it's the European counterpart of the Oscars. The
Europeans take this award very seriously.'

Mehra is sill receiving congratulatory calls.

'People in London, who informed me, said it was a huge honour for Indian
cinema. The foreign-film category is hugely competitive. How do I explain
the endless run of 'Rang De Basanti'? I think the emotions there are very
basic.

On Feb 11 Mehra is going to be in London for BAFTA with the entire 'Rang De
Basanti' team.

But the bifurcation of the best film and best director awards in some of the
Indian popular awards, with only one-half going to 'Rang De Basanti', has
exasperated Mehra.

'They've 90 categories, somewhere you can see the awards being politicised.
Okay, I don't mind if I don't get best director. But how can 'Rang De...'
not be awarded for editing or lyrics??

'The lyrics have given the film a poetic perspective. Popular awards are
being given out to balance the picture. If a film is good, embrace it,
please. By sheer mathematics, if 'Rang De...' gets maximum nominations, it
should equal to best film. I'm not annoyed, only amused.'

'Indian cinema is changing. So should the awards. But RDB is representing
India at BAFTA. So I'm not complaining.'

On a brighter note, what will Mehra be wearing at BAFTA?

'Anything from my wardrobe, yaar! Are you suggesting a designer? No way. I
haven't budgeted for that kind of extravagance.'

On Jan 26 'Rang De...' gets re-released in India.

'It's just 25 prints. To watch it again would be fun.'

[arr] My Favorite Song kanathil Muthamittal

2007-01-23 Thread Hakkeem
Hai,

Though ARR#8217;s all most all songs are spell
bounding, for me #8216;Kannathil Muthhamital#8217;
title song female version had touched me a lot. When
ever I used to listen (at least two times a day) I
feel like closing my eyes and flow along with the
music. I just cant scribble more about this song its
just a 'HAUNTING RHYTHM', to add to this my mom used
to listen this song very often( infact her favorite is
kannuku mai azahku from puthiyamugam).So
Kannathilmuthamital title song will remain, all time
favorite for me.

Kind regards,

and the lyrics too. The Rahman - Vairamuthu pair must rank as one amongst
the best MD-lyricist duo in history
