[arr] Guru - DVD Pack

2007-03-17 Thread Prabhu

Hi all,

I got the DVD pack today. It contains 2 DVD's. One contains the movie. The
other one is a 55 minute DVD. This one contains 4 or 5 deleted scenes, 5
minutes of Boss talking about Guru Music. Then the same interviews we have
seen time and again. Around 15 to 20 minutes of the DVD contains actual
scenes from the movie, which in my opinion is unnecessary as one can watch
it in the other DVD.

But there is a clip of Boss singing 'Ay Hairathe' for few seconds, whilst
playing that bulbuldhaara instrument.

I think the 'Making of Guru' could have been far better :( Sigh. Not every
additional details can become 'Making of Bombay Dreams'. To be honest, I was
bit disappointed!

[arr] Barso Re rules bollywood music charts

2007-03-17 Thread Thulasi Ram

New Delhi, Several new albums have hit the stands but not a single one seems
good enough to replace A.R. Rahman's "Barso re" from the top slot.

The top 10 Hindi film songs for the week are:

1. "Barso re" - Film: "Guru"; Music Director: A.R. Rahman; Singer: Shreya
Ghoshal. The hugely popular song about welcoming the rains and featuring
Aishwarya Rai once again retains its premier position this week.

All eyes on Rahman now IndiaGlitz [Saturday, March 17, 2007]

The audio of Sivaji would be out soon. And AR Rahman is the centre of all
attraction in Kollywood now.

The Rajinikanth starrer has attracted enough attraction. With just a week
left for the audio to be released, music-lovers are eagerly awaiting to hear
the songs of Sivaji.

Rahman has lent his voice for Rajinikanth for one of the songs in the album.
It is reportedly a romantic duet.

Meanwhile, the ace music composer's hands are full for the next one year.

Rahman is composing for Azhagiya Tamizh Magan and Chakkarakatti in Tamil.

Asked about rumors that he would bid bye to Tamil and concentrate on Hindi
and world music, Rahman says, "My roots are here. I gained fame from here. I
want to stay here and entertain people."

Rahman is also scoring music for Jodha Akbar featuring Hrithik Roshan and
Aishwarya and The Golden Age with Cate Blanchett and Clive Owen. The
Scottish composer Craig Armstrong joins Rahman for the project.

He was visibly delighted when he saw the best in the world of
music. All these facilities, right here in India and that too at a place that
is supposed to be teaching youngsters the ropes of cinema. It was too good to
be true, but it was. The occasion was the inauguration of the state of

the art (this time it is really serious) studios (TV, film and sound) at
the Whistling Woods International film school run by (dream merchant) Subhash
Ghai. Also present at the occasion were prominent film makers Rakeysh Omprakash
Mehra, Abbas Mustan, Vishal Bhardwaj and Kamlesh Pandey.

Rahman, speaking on the occasion told that the current crop of students were
really lucky to have such facilities at their disposal. He recounted his early
years when he had to struggle to get access to facilities. Rakeysh Mehra too
praised the school for its standards that were nothing short of international.
Subhash Ghai, founder of the school reiterated his commitment towards providing
guidance and opportunity of the highest order. Looks like there is going to be
no shortage of Rahmans and Mehras in the future.

Hi Friends.. I MET OUR BOSS, RAHMAN SIR, ON SUNDAY..I'm an Audio Engineering
student in Chennai n workin' in a Live Sound Company as Part Time. We set up
the Sound System for the CavinKare Ability Awards '06 - '07 function in Mayor
Ramanathan Chettiar Centre, Pattinambakkom, Chennai. A.R.Rahman n Tamil Nadu
C.M. M.Karunanidhi were the chief guests for the function. Blaaze, Naresh Iyer,
Guitarist Rashid Ali, Rahman Sir's Sound Recordist S.Sivakumar, Actress
Revathi, Actor Prakash Raj were also presnt for the function.

A 30 minute Piano Concert by Rahman Sir along with the Vocals n Guitarist
Rashid Ali was the Show's Highlight. The most special n unforgettable incident
was I set the Mic. for Rahman Sir..!! It was my dream to set the Mic. for
the Greatest Musician in India. Dear friends.. really I'm not gettin' words to
explain it.. He's Simply the Best.. No Doubt.. I was the inchief to set up the
Mics. When he was performin', I watched him closer than anybody other than the
Artists. The vocals were two females: One blind girl, after that a mentally
disabled girl.. First gal sung two English tracks of Rahman from Bombay Dreams
n the second gal performed Uyire song n Jiya jale.. It was Awesome..!!

Rahman with Piano n Rashid Ali with Guitar..!!

I got many advises from Sivakumar Sir 2 set the Mics. accordin' to Rahman Sir's
taste.. Those were the most valuable advises about the Miking Techniques I got.
Another thing is,by the Almighty's Grace I was only one to get Rahman Sir's
Autograph after the Program..! Just before Sir was 'attacked' by the Media
Persons n Cameras, I got the [Most Precious] Autograph from Him.. He left the
stage in a hurry after the press meet n lot of the Fans were dissappointed..
That was so sad.. my friends..

Then, I met Blaaze n thanked him 4 the Lyrics of Our Song 'PRAY FOR ME
BROTHER'. He is a simple man.. I also met Naresh n Rashid Ali.. Really.. Naresh
is the simplest celebrity I've ever met.. I said thanks 4 all of his songs..
But he just thanked Rahman Sir 4 everything.."

  Cheers!!!

Chennai: Veteran music director A R Rahman performed at Cavinkare Ability
Awards in Chennai, an annual event that recognises talents of the disabled
people.
"If they focus, they can perform better than normal people. It doesn't matter
if they are visually impaired or suffer from other disability. They can deliver
better than a normal person," said Rahman.
The young talented singers felt encouraged with Rahman's words. "When I got
to know that I was supposed to sing with him, it was a pleasant surprise. It
was like a dream come true," said a visually Impaired participant Heeru
Chandnani.
However, the musical maestro was cagey when asked about his plans for the
differently-abled singers. "There are lot of plans, I won't say anything," said
Rahman.
The event was also attended by Tamil Nadu CM M Karunanidhi and film actress
Revathi. It was definitely a night to remember for the special people, who felt
it was a dream opportunity.

[arr] In sync with Rahman

2007-03-17 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
In sync with Rahman
Monday, March 05, 2007 04:02:07 pm

/photo.cms?msid=1726054 It’s the awards season in the Hindi Film Industry and
when it comes to
the best music category, there is practically no competition -- AR Rahman and
cult film Rang De
Basanti, it is. This unassuming composer says awards are energising. TIMES
NOW’s Naomi Dutta
caught up with the talented musician and got talking first about RDB!

Excerpts:

Rahman: I think it’s a very important film for all of us, not only for me, its
changed the way
India thinks, I think it’s a revolutionary film

Naomi: And you said that when you worked with Rakeysh, you wanted to ensure
that every number
is a super hit, can you really ensure that as a composer?

Rahman: You can just try, but if you don't have an intention you don't even
try, and for a film
like RDB, we wanted that to happen because its not a straight commercial film,
it could have
gone wrong. So from my side and music and lyrics side, we wanted everything to
go right, so
each one was taking care of their departments in the right way!

Naomi: As a music composer what is your biggest fear -- that there is a song in
a film and
people go out of the theatre for a loo break, has it ever happened? Does that
thought scare
you?

Rahman: No, if you concentrate and work together, you can avoid that. Like in
RDB, I thought
'Tu Bin Bataye...Would be that kind of a song, but we never got that reaction.
They were
sitting and watching the film that time, even though it came near the interval
and it was a
every slow song. So sometimes you can break all the formulas.

Rahman followed up RDB with Mani Ratnam’s ‘Guru’ this year. A slow starter,
this album though
eventually became a top seller, one could argue that it is not Rahman &
Ratnam’s best work!

Naomi: It’s very important for you, especially in the Indian context that the
song
picturisation is right. In Guru, a lot of people appreciated the music, but lot
of people felt
they broke the narrative, how do you react to that as a music composer?

Rahman : I think people have become too intelligent, so much so that everyone
can make a film
now. When Mani puts a song in, it’s with loads of thing in his mind, so he
obviously knows what
he is doing. In fact, he told me that we have a song and if you remove the
song, the film
doesn't work, because it’s a serious film and it needs that song.

Naomi : And you have that Bappi Lahari song -- again people thought it was a
force fit.

Rahman : Well, you can expect the unusual from Mani. There are two opinions
about that -- some
of them really love it, when I was watching the film in New York, they said,
“Oh! It’s the best
song.” That’s good actually when people have different opinions about the same
thing,
completely opposite!

Naomi: Are you open to your songs being used as background scores, because in
India that’s not
totally appreciated, but that’s very important, now you that you have songless
films and all of
that. What do you make of that?

Rahman : Well, in a way music suffers if you put it as a background.
Definitely, the full
output of the song doesn’t come through, but sometimes it’s important to have
that song behind.
In ‘Guru’, especially, we did a song called 'Shock Hei', which was composed
after I saw the
film, it became a background score, and it was intentional.

As you may have noticed, this musical genius would rather his music speak for
him, but in
recent times, what he has been vocal about is the music composer getting joint
copyright over
his compositions along with the music label. It is a call, which cost him Farah
Khan’s ‘Om
Shanti Om’, but Rahman says it is the way forward.

Rahman: It’s fair to give a composer or a lyric writer whatever he or she
deserves, and
somebody has to voice it, so that’s the reason I voiced it.

Naomi: Has there been resistance?

Rahman: No, actually people are willing. Initially, they were like – ‘What is
this?’, but once
they get into it they realise how important it is. I see people who have done
great songs
suffering in poverty, suffering without money in the end. Here if this kind of
thing works out,
it’s almost like a pension for a composer or a writer, which I think they
deserve.

Naomi: But is that something you want for all your projects, you have recently
signed up with
Subhash Ghai, has his label agreed to that?

Rahman: That’s news to me!

Naomi: You haven't signed up with Subhash Ghai?

Rahman: He has not spoken to me yet.

Naomi: I got an SMS saying Subhash Ghai's new film, music by AR Rahman.

Rahman: Okay, I will be meeting him next week, I will find that out. We had
agreed to work on
some project couple of years back, and then he got busy with his Whistling
woods.

So we don’t know if Rahman is working with Subhash Ghai, but he is definitely
working for the
United Nations. Rahman’s first song in English for a noble cause – ‘Pray for
me, Brother’, is
an anti- poverty song composed and sung by him for the UN. Thi

[arr] Looking for Iku Tuhi (Indonesian/Hindi song)

2007-03-17 Thread Avan Amos
I have listened to this song on the web and would like to purchase the
CD. The information I have is sketchy. It was probably composed for
ARR's concert in Indonesia. The song is sung by children in Indonesia
and India. It starts with music, followed by the Indonesian children
and then by Indian children.

I'd appreciate it if someone can help me find this CD or just this song.

[arr] With great expectations - Singer Ganga speaks

2007-03-17 Thread Manoj Mohan C
"For eight years I sang track for A.R. Rahman; my voice is there in many of his
hit songs, though I never got to sing a full song for him"

[Guess she didn't know about 'Water']

With great expectations

Ganga became a playback singer the hard way. When she wanted to sing for
cinema, inspired by K.S. Chitra and encouraged by her friends at Zamorin's
Guruvayurappan College in Kozhikode, she had to travel to Chennai in 1992 to
try her luck.

She paid regular visits to music directors, who made her sing in chorus and
then the tracks for leading singers. Before long, Ganga became one of the
busiest track singers in Chennai. She also began doing stage shows. Then, out
of the blue, she got an opportunity to record a duet with K.J. Yesudas. It was
a big break for a young aspiring singer.

"I got that song by chance," recalls the Chennai-settled singer who had come to
visit her parents in Kozhikode recently. "I was, at that time, a neighbour of
director Mohan Anupama, his wife, made me sing the song `Kudajadriyil kudi
kollum... ' (`Neelakadambu'), which she wanted to choreograph for her dance
show. Mohan liked the way I sang the song and said that he would give me an
opportunity in `Pakshe' if music director Johnson liked my voice."

Thus Ganga made her debut in playback singing. "But unfortunately, my name
wasn't there in the cassette and I didn't get the credit for the song
(`Sooryamshuvetho... '), though it became a hit," she rues.

Sujatha's kind gesture

So her struggle to make it as a playback singer continued. Then an
exceptionally kind gesture from Sujatha gave her a break in Tamil. Ganga had
sung the tracks for debutant director Ravishankar's film `Varushamellam
Vasantham' starring Manoj. The music director was Sirpi and he had made Ganga
sing the tracks of two songs that he wanted to record in Sujatha's voice. When
Sujatha heard the track of the melodious `Adi anarkali... ,' she requested
Sirpi to retain Ganga's voice. This song helped her get noticed.

Ganga had already made her debut in Telugu. "I had sung four songs in `Akasa
Veedhilo' for M.M. Keeravani," says Ganga who has established herself as a
playback singer in Telugu.

"I have sung about 100 songs in Telugu so far. But I was disappointed when I
was not given the opportunity to sing a couple of my hit songs that were dubbed
into Malayalam. Both the songs I had sung in the Telugu film `Lakshmi,' which
has recently been released in Malayalam, were hits. "

Ganga wants to sing more in her mother tongue. "I am hopeful about the song I
sang with Sankaran Namboodiri in the film `Kanaka Simhasanam' - Azhakarnna...
,' which is composed by M. Jayachandran."

Ganga's hit in Malayalam remains `Chiri chiriyo... ,' from `Chronic Bachelor.'
But her best song, so far, is `Etho kaliyarangin... ' a melodious solo from
`Vismayathumabathu.'

Ganga has been around for 14 years. "People say I have survived because of my
will power. Many girls who had reached Chennai like me gave up long ago. For
eight years I sang track for A.R. Rahman; my voice is there in many of his hit
songs, though I never got to sing a full song for him. But I have no
complaints; I feel I have done well enough for a girl whose only window to
learn a song was `Chithrageetham' on Doordarashan and who bought her first
audio cassette when she was doing her graduation."

I think you are referring to Ek Tu Hi Bharosa from the Hindi film Pukar (1999).
The song is
adapted from Rahman's own composition 'Oh Bosnia', composed and performed
during his first ever
full-fledged concert in Kuala Lumpur in 1996. That song was sung in Bahasa
Melayu and was never
released.

Pukar can be purchased from this link:

[arr] Mani on ARR in a recent interview with "The Hindu"

The current practice of banning films was quite archaic and should be done
away in a phased manner.

"Rehman is a brilliant composer and tremendous person to work with. He wants
the films to do well and composes music that is lateral to the theme," he
said appreciating the role played by A R Rehman's music in his films.

Re: [arr] did ARR do CIVIL ENGINEERING ??????????????

2007-03-17 Thread Karthikeyamurthy J

No i think it is a mistake... he stopped his schooling in 9th standard or
8th...
He told this in his recent interview in SS Music.. when Craig asked what abt
ur college life... for which rahman replied "there is no college life for
me... i stopped my schooling in 8th or 9th..." so it is an absolute
mistake... Come on Rahman is born to be a music director... and he had been
in music music and nothing but music right from his childhood... from about
18 to 21 he was working as a keyboard player with my father and various
other leading music directors like IR, etc.( as duleep kumar)... and then in
24 he made his debut in film music foray... so i m quite sure that he didnt
do CIVIL ENGINEERING... the information is incorrect...
