[arr] Sivaji is the boss in Delhi too!

2007-06-26 Thread Thulasi Ram

The Periya Thalaivar (the Big Boss).. *(6/26/2007)* *Sivaji is the boss in
Delhi too!
*

*PTI*

NEW DELHI: The *Periya Thalaivar* (the Big Boss) of Tamil cinema Rajnikant
has created a record of sorts, his phenomenal popularity spilling out from
the southern belt and sweeping the capital if the number of theatres
screening his latest blockbuster is any indication.

*Sivaji-The Boss* which was released in only two multiplexes in Delhi and
one in Gurgaon last week is now being screened in more than 12 halls across
the capital.

Shalu Sabharwal, vice president, sales and marketing, PVR Cinemas says "It
is the huge demand from the audience that prompted us to release *Sivaji* in
more halls. The film is really good. I watched the film and liked it very
much."

Produced at a whopping 90 crores, *Sivaji*, the most expensive Indian film
was in news for quite some time and analysts point out that the coverage
given to the film by the North Indian media has played a pivotal role in its
huge success here.

Cutting across language barrier North Indians too are coming in large
numbers to catch the action. Even though the film is being screened without
subtitles the non-Tamilian audience is not missing much.

Some scenes of the film were shot in Chhattarpur and R K Puram areas. "I
remember Rajanikant fans flocking in from different parts of the capital
during the film's shooting here," says M Natesan, general secretary of the
Tamil Youth Cultural Association, a wing of Delhi Tamil Sangam.

"Almost all of the 11 lakh Tamilians in Delhi have watched the film in the
first week itself" he adds.

The antics of style *mannan*, king of style, Rajanikant seems to have gone
down well with the North audience. "Rajanikant is a phenomenon. There is a
sizeable chunk of fan following for the star in North India too" says PVR's
Shalu.

Moreover the lacklustre performance of the much anticipated film *Jhoom
Baraabar Jhoom* has added to the success of *Sivaji*, she adds.

The story of *Sivaji-The Boss* revolves around Sivaji (Rajani), an NRI
computer wizard, who comes back to his homeland with a dream to set up free
educational and medical institutions.

He has to confront the vile ways of a scheming politician, Adhiseshan
(Suman) who creates all sorts of problems for him and even manages to turn *
Sivaji* into a pauper. How *Sivaji* rises from the ashes and metes out his
revenge is all what the film is about.

Vinod Babu, MD, Inox, Chennai says "The combination of Rajanikant, director
Shankar and A R Rahman had made *Sivaji-The Boss* the most anticipated film
of the year. And it has lived up to the hype."

The film has been released in 20 theatres including multiplexes in Chennai
alone. It has registered the biggest ever opening for any Tamil film.

"It is still very early to say whether *Sivaji* will surpass the record of
Rajani's prior release *Chandramukhi* which is still running successfully
after 800 days of its release" Babu says.

"Sivaji has registered 80 percent collection in the very first week of its
release" says Ashish Saxena, COO, films division, PVR Cinemas. "Owing to its
good show we have increased the number of screens and number of shows in the
northern region" he adds.

The overwhelming response to the film is also viewed as an opening up of the
North Indian viewers to the films from South. "If films like *Sivaji* comes
we will certainly consider releasing it in Delhi" says Shalu.

"*Sivaji* has come as a great recognition to the iconic star whose fan
following cannot be matched by any other actor in the world.

This film has compelled the sceptical audience of North India to stand up
and take notice of this star, Rajanikant, and give him his due that was long
eluding him" says Natesan

[arr] Despite Rains Boss pulls crowd in Pune - Times of India

2007-06-26 Thread Thulasi Ram

PUNE: God proposes, Boss disposes. And so it was that even the rain gods in
all their resplendence could not keep fans away from superstar Rajnikant's
Sivaji, The Boss.

Released in the city on Friday, Sivaji opened to packed houses in all major
theaters. A total of 20 shows are running in the city each day. And thanks
to the hype, the first day was a huge draw.

"The first day audience had quite a good number of non-Tamil speakers," said
Vijay Shetty, assistant manager at a multiplex. "Actually, a lot of fans had
no idea that the film was in Tamil or that there would be no sub-titles."

Parking attendant Mukesh Shinde, an ardent Rajnikant fan, is dying to see
the film. "But I heard from my friends that it is in Kannada (sic). They
should have made a Hindi version too. Even so many English films these days
are dubbed in Hindi."

Student Anurag Jha agrees. "I love Rajnikant's style and attitude, and
language makes no difference there. But a lot of my friends would have come
today if there was a Hindi dubbing or sub-titles. For now, they are planning
to get their hands on a CD and watch the fun parts."

But despite the language barriers, Sivaji is probably the biggest
non-Marathi draw in the city in the past few years. Said Rajeev Patni,
regional director of a theatre group: "We do screen several good regional
films. But this is the first time we are screening four shows everyday of a
non-Marathi regional movie."

"We are showing the film at our screens with bigger capacity. Usually
regional films are shown in smaller halls or have fewer shows. But the
response for Sivaji has been tremendous," said Neerav Panchamiya of a city
multiplex.

"There are many who don't understand Tamil and are watching the film just
out of curiosity. I'm one of them," said Panchamiya. And what does he think
of it? "I totally enjoyed it."
Unlike hordes of Rajnikant fans, media professional Sharda Ganesan watched
the movie primarily for the lead comedian Vivek. And now she is a believer.
"I have become a Rajnikant fan."

"Even people who don't understand Tamil should watch the film for Rajnikant
and his style. The entire audience, including me, was hooting and whistling
throughout the film. I never thought a multiplex audience would behave like
this, but it was fun," she said.

Art professional Virendra Shah plans to watch the film before he leaves for
the US, even though he doesn't understand Tamil. "I am going to miss India
and I am trying to take in everything about the country before I leave. I am
eating Indian food, travelling and now I am going to watch Sivaji. The film
is truly a representation of the country and its craze for films and film
stars."

Hi All,
Yesterday, the noted cameraman turned director Jeeva (43) died of a
massive heart attack in Russia where he was shooting for his latest film
Dhaam Dhoom. Though this news has nothing to do with our group, we should
remember that he had been the cinematographer for some of our Boss' films
especially, KADHALAN. As a true lover of music I have enjoyed some of the
songs in the films he had directed (though the music is by the HJ). I
express my deep condolences to his grief stricken family.

It must be an interesting find!
Its tough to find on net as there was hardly any
activity on internet in 1991.
Only way is to drop into some central library in chennai.
You must be in DC area..right..Ask your friends in TN to
collect for you.
May be Gopal already has a scanned copy ;)

Re: [arr] Re: Roja movie/music review ?

2007-06-26 Thread sriram natarajan
If you've been to Tirupathi, you'll know the scene. You waited and waited with
bated breath, and finally when your turn came, all you got was a fleeting
glimpse of the deity. You went with a hundred things in mind, but instead you
had to contend with those surly god's own men snapping, "Jaragandi,
jaragandi... " ("Move on, move on... "). You came away with a hole in your
heart.
Despite the markedly different audience (plush environs of a star hotel),
waiting for A.R. Rahman — in a long queue of eager-beaver journos, aspiring
singers, hopeful producers and directors, friends and fans — was something like
a Tirupathi moment. "Each of you get five minutes," came a voice, which carried
with it an air of overwhelming generosity.
What does one ask in five minutes to someone who redefined Indian film music
and the world's perception of it? That too to a man who has such a huge body of
work to his credit and seems so frightfully reticent? But the mild-mannered
Rahman allayed all apprehensions and graciously said even after my five minutes
were up: "Go on." In fact, he even offered me a second chance — a precious 10
minutes!
 A trailblazer

Rahman is truly amazing for the manner in which he stormed into the Indian
film music scene even before establishing his regional credentials. With his
debut film Roja in 1991, he became a national phenomenon, bagging the Rajkamal
for it. Rahman acknowledged that it was all part of a conscious design. "I
wasn't too happy with the I-don't-want-to-listen-it attitude of our youngsters
towards film music. Why can't we get our guys to listen to our own music rather
than Michael Jackson? I didn't want us to lose the market out to the West. The
music had to be cool, it had to be rooted, and yet had to branch out. It was
like the wild imagination of a child... but it worked... It did travel beyond
Chennai and had people," explained the gifted composer.
And having a studio of his own has helped him in a big way. He has had the
freedom of working on his tunes day and night, for days, months and years (he
worked almost for a year on the Rangeela song and worked for a good six months
on Roja's "Tamizha Tamizha"), until he was fully satisfied with it. " I have
rubbed many a producer on the wrong way by disturbing the schedule, but it has
paid off."
In the case of his blockbuster
album Vande Mataram too, he was fully aware of what he was doing. If it changed
the image of India from a peace-loving country to a nuclear powerhouse, it was
intended. Rahman and his friend Bharat Bala conceived it as a flag-waving,
jingoistic declaration, a mantra of every kid in the country. "It had to be
unlike the one that has been played on the radio for years, a muffled kind of a
sound. I wanted a sound that would connect me with people and capture a
collective energy."
But going by Rahman's style, which has a visual texture to it, his version of
"Vande Mataram" doesn't capture the celebration of Indian landscape in Bankim
Chandra's poem. "It wasn't intended that way," came the concise reply. With
Vande Mataram, Rahman, who gave Indian music a global feel, also re-asserted
himself as a gizmo freak. (In fact, he is said to spend most of his money on
acquiring new electronic gadgets.) Not that he has made only foot-tapping
numbers; he did classical pieces such as "Kanna mucchi yenada" in Natakuranji
for Kandukondein Kandukondein and he did sweeping melodies like "Uyire" for
Bombay along with songs like "Rukkumani" and "Mukkala Muqabala". "Somehow,
people just put all my melodies on the backburner and remembered me for only
rhythm-driven songs. But things have changed since Lagaan. They have woken up
to the other aspects in me." Rahman remembered how on his way to Gulbarga from
Hyderabad, he was playing a soft song and the car driver
threatened to fall asleep if he didn't play a fast one. But during one of his
trips to Germany, an admirer came up to him to say how much he liked the songs
in Zubeidaa, a film that failed at the box-office. "I take all criticisms
objectively, though I believe in elevating the tastes of the listener," he
maintained.
 Back to roots

Nevertheless, to the layman, Rahman has always been someone with a strong
Western orientation, unlike Ilaiyaraja who with all his veneration for baroque
music, has strong oriental roots. The manner in which Ilaiyaraja rendered
Tyagaraja's krithi "Tulasidala" in a western idiom and his current orchestral
symphony Thiruvasagam stands testimony. Rahman too is working on a project
called Conference of the Words, a book based on a Suf
