Thanks Thulsi, one more thing. Yesterday when i saw SAAWARIYA exclusive promo
in indiafm, i too wished that if ARR was the MD of that movie. I know we
don't post this type of articles. Bhansali should have gone with ARR. Hope
Bhansali and Rahman will work togather in BAJIRAO MASTANI if it happen.

[arr] Shyam Benegal does not want ARR's effort in Chamki to go waste

2007-08-25 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
On the trail of a spy Princess

Saturday August 25 2007 15:01 IST

  Saibal Chatterjee

  His
long, eventful career has been built on a steady flow of films. Shyam
Benegal isn’t, ergo, accustomed to protracted inaction. His last
release, Bose: The Forgotten Hero, was completed all of two years ago.
“I am getting extremely restless,” the veteran director says. “I have
never had such a long fallow period in my career.”

It isn’t, however, just the forced hiatus that has had him a tad on
the edge of late; the lackadaisical manner in which the distributors
treated the Netaji biopic, a pure labour of love, still rankles. “That
film would have had a fair chance hadn’t it been so poorly exploited,”
he laments. “Imagine running a three-and-a-half-hour film at 11 at
night or at 10.30 in the morning. It had to sink.”

But that setback is now behind him, and the septuagenarian
filmmaker is moving on, with not one, not two, but three ventures
looming on the horizon. First up is the tentatively titled Mahadev,
which is scheduled to roll in September. “The idea has been with me for
a long time,” he says of the comedic film that will star Shreyas
Talpade and Amrita Rao. “It is about a young villager who is the only
literate man in his community and aspires to be a writer. He ends up
becoming a letter writer to the unlettered.”

Mahadev will see Benegal return to the rural Indian terrain that
has yielded some of his best films. From his very first directorial
outings, the epochal Ankur (1974) and Nishant (1975), to the more
recent Samar (1998), his cinema has frequently explored the hinterland
of a complex, constantly evolving nation grappling with debilitating
divides at various levels of existence — caste, gender, history,
modernity versus tradition…

Also on the Benegal anvil is what promises to be by far his most
ambitious film to date — an international spy drama about the real-life
Noor Inayat Khan, a direct descendant of Tipu Sultan. Her courage is
still commemorated in the UK and France, but she isn’t even a footnote
in Indian history. “I hope that will change once the film gets made,”
says Benegal. Noor’s story is indeed the stuff that riveting cinema is
made of: during World War II, she laid down her life working as a
British agent in Nazi-occupied France.

The upcoming film is being scripted by economist Lord Meghnad Desai
and his wife, Kishwar, who have bought the film rights to journalist
Shrabani Basu’s critically acclaimed book, Spy Princess: The Life of
Noor Inayat Khan. “It’s an outstanding story,” says Benegal. “It has
everything: human drama, heroism, intrigue, war…The book is the first
authoritative biography of Noor Inayat Khan, very well researched and
reconstructed. It’s crying to be made into a film.”

The scriptwriters, the director reveals, are currently on the third
draft of the screenplay. “They are now in India for a month-and-a-half.
By the time they return to London, the draft will have been wrapped up.
It’s flowing quite nicely,” says Benegal.

Noor, who was betrayed by double agents and shot by the Nazis in
Dachau in 1944 (she was only in her 20s), was a “strikingly pretty”
woman endowed with multiple creative skills. She was a singer,
broadcaster and writer of children’s stories. Says the director: “She
was as unlikely a war martyr as you can ever get. She was very quiet,
gentle and vulnerable, a woman who believed in the tenets of the Sufi
order set up in Paris by her father, sitar player and dhrupad vocalist
Inayat Khan (in 1909, he was the first Indian classical musician to
settle in the West). Subterfuge and violence were anathema to Noor. But
she was required to resort to both once she volunteered to be an
underground radio operator in France during the war.”

The screen adaptation of Noor’s tale of bravery and sacrifice, to
be shot entirely in Europe sometime next year, will be an
English-French-German film with a smattering of Urdu. “The cast and the
funding will obviously be international, but the film will have a
strong Indian involvement in both respects,” says Benegal. Has he homed
in on an actress for the character of Noor? “We will get to that only
after the script is ready,” he says. “The character can be played by
anybody from the younger lot of Mumbai actresses, but I am open to an
European, somebody like Monica Bellucci, for the part.”

Closer home, Benegal is still nurturing an idea that is all set to
roll but for the problems he has had with prospective producers —
Chamki Chameli, a musical adaptation of Georges Bizet’s famed opera,
Carmen. He plans to shoot the film on the Indo-Pak border in Rajasthan.
“I haven’t abandoned that project. A R Rahman has already done a lot of
music for Chamki Chameli,” he reveals. “It needs a producer who is
willing to be patient and involved. It’s not the sort of film for which
you can go the location and start shooting.”

Talking of Rahman, wouldn’t he be the

Indian raga

Shridevi Keshavan

As she readies for her concert tonight, violonist Vanessa Mae is already
dreaming about the Taj Mahal

She construes her Indian song as something that she would like to play on the
streets of the country with AR Rahman. “It cannot get better than AR Rahman.
‘Raga’s Dance’ from my last album ‘Choreography’, on which I collaborated with
AR Rahman is pretty much my Indian song,” says violinist Vanessa Mae who is
performing at Grand Hyatt tonight for Seagram’s 100 Pipers. It’s the Taj Mahal
she is the most excited about though. “How can someone come to India and not
see the Taj?” she wonders.

Vanessa’s rise to fame was destined and expected when she started playing the
violin at the age of five and eventually became the youngest soloist to record
Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. Quiz her about taking the instrument to a different
level with her staggering experimentations of fusing different styles of music
and the critics making nasty comments at the same time and she says, “I was all
of 16 and couldn’t care less about what the critics were saying. I always
thought of the violin as an instrument that should be more accessible to
people. People had never seen pop and rock played on a classical instrument,”
she smiles.

The violinist has performed with some of the most popular names in the music
industry including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and Prince among others.
“Working with Prince was the most exciting and frightening experience. It was
jazz funk, something I had never done before. So when I got a call from him I
was tempted to take it up. He breathes music,” she recalls.

With a brand new album on the way Vanessa doesn’t divulge too much about her
next project but promises something new. “After what I’ve experimented
everything that follows will stem from the same source unless I do like acid
jazz (laughs). On the new album I’m planning more of visual impact,” she
explains.

Coming back to her performance tonight where she will be jamming with sitarist
Ustad Nishat Khan, her songs will be a blend of songs from her work at various
points in her life. “I have heard Ravi Shankar and her daughter perform but
have never really done a duet. So I’m really looking forward to it,” she ends.

ARR unplugged

By Anupama Subramanian

I ’ve missed my flight to Mumbai. My next flight is at 5 pm. I have
two hours to spare for you. Please make it to the airport," said A.R.
Rahman over the phone. Considering the long list of Bollywood and
Kollywood biggies lining up outside his Panchathan recording studio,
two hours with the maestro was a delight. However, on the way to the
airport through Chennai’s traffic, the legendary composer was in an
upbeat mood. He spoke about his future projects, his vision of building
a school and closeness to Allah in an exclusive interview with Deccan
Chronicle.

New challenges

For the past 15 years I have been exploring myself with each and
every composition. The music scene is changing constantly and it is
very challenging. You have to continuously experiment, otherwise you
become complacent. International assignments come once in a blue moon.
The kind of reviews I received for Lord of the Rings (it was a
three-year-long effort) gave me the enthusiasm to explore new genres of
music. But whatever I do, my first priority is Tamil films which have
given me an identity. More importantly you get connected through music
which, according to me is a rare language.

However, working on contrasting themes at the same time like Akbar
Jodha, Sivaji and Lord of the Rings is really nightmarish. But I could
do that because I work as a team and not alone. You get tuned to it.

Anything for Shekhar

Believe it or not, this is the first time that Shekhar Kapur and I
are going to be working together for a full-fledged film, Golden Age.
Although I have known him for the past 13 years, we have only done a
commercial together earlier. And of course, Bombay Dreams was his
brainchild. He asked me if I would mind if one more English composer,
Grammy award winner Craig Armstrong, is also roped in for this
Hollywood flick, and I didn’t hesitate for even a moment. I said
‘anything for you Shekhar’. I think Shekhar is one of the finest
filmmakers of the world.

Son shine

My little son Ameen lent his voice to an animated character in
Shekhar Kapur’s film, which he is developing for Motion Pictures.
(Laughs) He is just 4½ years old and is hyperactive. He used to jump
and dance whenever he watched my music on television even when he was a
baby. he bagged this offer quite accidentally. It is untitled and the
work is in progress. It all started when Shekhar who wanted to try out
my son’s voice casually asked me whether I would allow my son to give a
small vocal. I was little apprehensive initially, but to our surprise
it has turned out well.

Animated Superstar

Composing for the animated film Sultan of Warrior featuring
Rajinikanth was very demanding. Everything is artificial in an animated
film, but the music plays an intrinsic role in bringing the characters
alive. In fact, the music also has to act. It is futuristic and I am
very excited about composing music for a new effort and that too for
superstar Rajni sir.

Bridging the Indo-Pak divide

We almost did that few years back through a concert
at Wagah border. But due to unavoidable circumstances it got shelved.
It would have been great had it happened. Unfortunately, there is
hatred that has been created between the two countries.

Closeness to Allah

If you want to be close to God, you can. If he is in
your thoughts then only good things come out of you. Compassion, love,
affection — all these emotions will be part of you. Lot of bad things
happen in this world. Being one with God opens your eyes and you
experience abundance of wisdom.

School for thought

I have started a foundation called AR.Rahman
Foundation. We made the album Pray For Me Brother for UN with the
objective of eradicating poverty. The desire to eradicate poverty has
been of utmost priority and giving a good education to poor and needy
students has been in my mind for several years. As our former president
Abdul Kalam puts it, ‘Poverty is a direct threat to our nation’, and we
have started the foundation keeping this in mind.

The money collected through the album has been put
into the foundation. I bought a piece of land near Chennai ten years
ago, and that’s where I am planning to build the school. It will be a
centre for meritorious students irrespective of religion and caste. Its
my vision to give the future generation an atmosphere of love. All
kinds of people from my community — by which I mean the music community
will be there.

Apart from academics the school will give emphasis to
music and arts like cinematography, etc. Anyone from across the globe
who wants to teach music and art can come and teach. All this is still
in the primary stage. We have big aspirations with a small beginning.
Luckily we have enough people to fund it. We have to make an effort.
That’s all!
