[arr] (Semi ARR) - Missing strong melodies in today's film albums overall

2008-04-04 Thread Chord
While I do appreciate that many MDs today are experimenting with
different sounds and juxtaposing seemingly aural incongruities (like
what VS did in Tashan mixing harmonium and dholak with rock and club),
I find myself longing for stronger melodies. I hardly listen to
albums these days other than ones from ARR, SEL, Bharadwaj, Moitra,
and occasionally VS. I know it's the times we're in. Popular music
today worldwide is mostly hip hop, dance, trance, club, house, etc.
Even ARR has trended with this in many of his recent albums, but he's
always kept strong melodies in the forefront. I don't have to mention
here other brilliant aspects of ARR's music in addition! Of course,
each film demands a different kind of musical treatment.

What I do like is the mixture of styles seen today in
music..everything from Latin, Folk, Classical, Jazz, Club, Rock,
you name it...it's in India! I just wish more composers would infuse
stronger melodies into their compositions, like what ARR does most of
the time. I also like the sonic improvements that technological
pioneers like ARR have paved. I'd much rather listen to strong sonic
and weaker melody than stale, monotonous boring sonic/arrangements
(from the 1980s) and stronger melodies. This is why as much as I like
to hum the strong melodies from decades ago, play them on the
keyboard, and see them played on screen, I can't pop in a CD from the
1970s and listen repeatedly due to sonic and arrangeement issues.

And the music did really well too, Mr. Tuteja, something you of course
conveniently forgot to mention. Remember your pathetic review of JA's
music? If the music was so bad, why are user ratings on YOUR OWN SITE
close to 4.5/10? Why has JA's music been in the first and second
positions in the charts for so long all over India? Can you answer
that? No, you can't because you know your review was wrong in the
first place and too cowardly to admit it. Fortunately, most people saw
right through you and panned you left and right. Congrats on
diminishing your reputation and getting lots of negative attention!

[arr] Jodha Akbar Music - Philosophical Ramblings

2008-04-04 Thread Vithur
There are few Rahman albums which have been as consolidated, mature and as
well-made as this one. Of the several songs in the album, I like two songs
much, and one of them intensely. One of the songs which I like in this album
is Khwaja Mere Khwaja, which is a Sufi number rendered immaculately by
Rahman in his own voice (the veteran director is really putting his voice to
the test a lot more these days, which is nice to see) and rendered to the
sound of harmoniums, clapping and a lilting, rhythmic, periodic base (as is
typical of Islamic music).

The song that I really have my kudos saved up for, is *Manmohana*.
Atmospheric, mysterious, deep and reflecting a sense of separation and
sadness, this number more than ever exemplifies why Rahman is a great artist
equally with numbers based on classical tunes and ragas and rapidly
approaching his proficiency in rendering westernized tunes to mass
audiences. There are so many great things about this song, that it makes me
want to list them down, so here I go:

   1. *Bela Shende's voice. *Excellent effort, reaching very high pitches
that only a very well trained female voice can achieve. Great vocals
throughout the song, but particularly in the alapanas, where the choicest
parts of Sindhu Bhairavi seem to have been cherry-picked and rendered to
create an atmosphere of perfection, mystery and ennui.
   2. *The mysterious flute.* Just another of the aspects of the song
which create an atmosphere of mystery,Rahman's use of the flute here is
   exemplary.
   3. *The rhythm synthesizer *(presumably)*. *Rahman and synthesizer
music usually go hand-in-hand. What stands out in this song is the level of
complementarity that has been achieved between the flute, the vocals and the
onset and fade of the deep rhythms.

If I were to list one part of the song which could have been better, I would
say that it could have been ended on a better note (literally). The song
starts off opulently and trails off nonchalantly, which alludes to certain
moods. Sadly the ending of the song doesn't maintain the atmosphere created
by the rest of it, or transcend to another style or terminate it gracefully
- it just whittles away, and that's the only thing about this song which
could have been better. Even here, Bela Shende's voice stands out. However,
the ending could have been more ornamented, perhaps with the tabla beats
coming through until the end.

I tried playing this song on my guitar (as I try with nearly every song I
like these days) and managed to get parts of the song right, even though I
cannot admit that a guitar rendition would do justice to the elaborate
mental landscapes created by the song. I enjoyed playing the song of course,
but not as much as I enjoyed listening to it or humming it. Anyhow, there's
always room for improvement with the guitar, and tomorrow's another day, so
to speak.

To wind up, I'd say that these are two songs that will be on my play list
for some time now.

[arr] Kailash Kher on Rahmania Show

2008-04-04 Thread Vithur
Dear Rahmaniacs,

Kailash Kher needs no introduction. His interview with Raihannaji on
Rahmania is as below. From his very speech, it was very clear that he is a
very pious, innocent God fearing singer.

"I started singing when I was 4 years old, though I havent learnt formally.
I straight away started singing, and my father was surprised to see me
singing. and then sombody suggested I should learn Indian Classical Music.
Then when I was 13 years old, I was in 6th Class. That time, I left my
house, for learning music ( against my parents wish). No one was supporting
me at that time. I had to live alone. It was the interest towards music,
which made me do all that. I have to earn and survive first, which kept me
irregular for learning music. It was very dark for me at that time. I was
not able to find a job also, and had to do lots of odd jobs for survival. I
did my graduation all by myself. I have changed almost 14 Gurus, and I
havent been regular with anyone. I learnt life more than music by that time.
I am not a trained singer, and whatver I feel, I sing.

When i used to sing in my childhood days, my voice was very soothing , but
in between during the transition phase, it used to crack, and I used to feel
that I cant sing, and many teachers used to tell me that I cant sing. It was
very tough to go through such phases. We were in Delhi, and Delhi's music
sense was not that much. You ( Raihannaji) was lucky that you were in
Chennai. In Delhi, people used to ask me ' What are you doing ?". When I
used to tell them " I sing". They used to ask me Singing is Ok, but what are
you really doing ??..

I came to 2001 to Bombay to cut an album. But I was working for that without
money. There were two musicians who were helping me. They were Naresh &
Paresh. No money; so the speed was very slow. Someone heard my voice and
they wanted to offer me TV JIngles. I have sung more than 600 Ads till now.
My elder brother is an Advocate, younger sister doing Doctorate in History.
Father is an Astrologer. My father used to say that this guy will make a
name for himself , and he never clearly told which career.

Inside me, there is a very intense philosopher, intense human being who
believes in very very truth, purity, love and passion on what you do. I
never understood that Bombay would be the hub for Bollywood and Film music.
Somehow, i was unaware of all this. People started giving me Filmi music,
after hearing my ad jingles. I came with an album in 2006, after I had
entered film music.

Before Mangal Pandey, I had sung ' Allah ke Bandhe" . This was from Arshad
Warsi's movie " Waise Bhi Hota Hain". I got several awards for this movie.

I came to see Rahman, because he wanted me to sing in Meenaxi ( the
Background Score ) . he asked me to give him some ideas on the provoking
songs for the Warriors from the Northern Side. Then I told him abt this
tradition. Then he gave me the main title song of Mangal Pandey. This was an
opportunity and co-incidence, that he called me for one, and I ended up
doing five films for him, at the same time.

*I adore him, I love him as a human being more than artiste, he is God's
direct descendance. he is a gift to the earth, to this universe and
spreading his lights *
*through his aura. *

Sufi Songs - I have been listening in my formative years to all big saints.
They used to call Nirguni Bhajans . Rumi, Guru Nanak, Baba Fareed
compositions . we used to listen to from the mouths of composers.

My career started as a singer first. But otherwise, all my albums .. I have
written, I have composed. Actually, I like composing and singing. Singing is
the first passion.

I dont do anything bad; I dont boose, I dont smoke; I dont eat external
food.. When I go outside, I try to cook myself. I know very good cooking.

Interests :- I cook. I write poems; observe people a lot , I also imitate
people. ( do mimicry)

Music ;- I love RAHMAN a lot. In Film direction, I like films with a
message, like Chak De India. In south, I like Shankar, Mohanlalji,
Rajinikanth.

Mostly all the songs sung by Rahman I like. I love his Tamil songs like
anything, though I dont know the language, but I can connect with them. It
is his language, and he connects directly with God. I loved singing the song
" Yeh Jo Desh hai tere" with ARR for swades.

Mangal Mangal :- He called me inside the studio, and within 30 minutes, he
asked me to sing that Mangala mangala bit with that aalap.

Mangala Mangala, Yuhi Chala, then Lakeer, Dil Ne Jise apna Kaha, some parts
in Kisna . Other than that Shankar Ehsan loy, Vishal Shekhar, Himesh .

With Rahman, i have been doing lots of concerts. The best thing is that, I
request him to join me in stage, and he joins me by shaking his hands.

I BELIEVE IN TRUE LOVE TO HUMANITY, NOT TO HURT ANYONE 'S HEART. This is my
philosophy in life. ( Anyone going to marry you is going to be very lucky
says Raihannaji)

I find it intersting to sing other languages, though I am sad i cannot
understand the lyrics, nor

A great news the 1st day Rahman announced for Music school I was
dreaming for this that Calcutta should get one such beautiful gift.

And "Takey Takey" has got some Baul influences from Mangal Pandey.
In Baul there is a category where all the songs shows the degradation of
society...the songs mock about the fouls of society.

This is an interview of ARR that came long back. It was published in
The Telegraph (Kolkata) just after the music release of Swades. I
don't know if it is already shared in the group. It is with me for a
long time and just felt like sharing with the group. As I kept the
paper cutting of the interview only, I don't know on what date it was
published :)

Though many predicted doomsday for JODHAA AKBAR not just before it's release
but even a week after it's arrival, the film has successfully managed to
complete 50 days at the box office. And that too in good style!

Unlike numerous flicks which barely reach the 50 days landmark with a couple
of dozen prints in the running ay maximum, JODHAA AKBAR would be celebrating
this achievement with more than 150 prints across the country. The film is
the biggest success ever for Ashutosh Gowariker who has other notable films
like LAGAAN and SWADES to his credit. However, his JODHAA AKBAR has done the
sum total of business of these two films and is still counting.

The film has crossed 60 crores just from Indian market and is still
counting. Hrithilk and Ash have yet another big hit to their name while UTV
too enjoys continued success with first JODHAA AKBAR and then RACE turning
out to be mega successes!

Rahman plans second music conservatory in West Bengal

Calcutta News.Net
Friday 4th April, 2008 (IANS)

After setting up his first western classical music conservatory in Chennai,
music maestro A.R. Rahman plans to set up the second one in Kolkata. He said
he would love to explore talents from West Bengal.

'The first music conservatory in India for training national musicians in
western classical music will be opened at Chennai in June. The second one
will follow shortly in Kolkata,' Rahman told IANS.

Speaking of Kolkata and music, Rahman said: 'The city breathes refreshing
music. I was thoroughly inspired by the traditional baul music while
composing for 'Mangal Pandey'. In fact, I would love to explore the new
talents and music of West Bengal.

'Right now I am planning a new album. It has been 10 years after 'Vande
Mataram' that I came up with a new one,' added Rahman who was here Thursday
to shoot the season finale of Airtel Bandwagon, a television reality show
promoting music bands.

Rahman, who wowed his fans with melodious and soulful compositions in
'Jodhaa Akbar', also said that he would return to Kolkata with a
larger-than-life concert by the end of this year.

Incidentally, Rahman's first music concert in India was held in Kolkata in
February 2003.

You watched the 3 hours plus JODHAA AKBAR at theaters a few weeks. Now get
set to watch what you missed out in theaters, as UTV gets ready to unveil
the deleted scenes from the film.

Much before the DVDs of the film hits the stands and gives the audience a
chance to see the deleted scenes from the film, UTV MOVIES, the newly
launched channel by UTV, would be airing these scenes on the small screen.

UTV Movies is a mainstream Hindi movie channel and already has over 300
movie titles in its library. The channel has numerous biggies like RANG DE
BASANTI, THE NAMESAKE, LIFE IN A...METRO, AAP KAA SURROOR - THE MOVIE and
DHAN DHANA DHAN GOAL in its kitty.

Though all eyes are now set on JODHAA AKBAR to have it's small screen
premier, the deleted scenes from the film are certainly expected to act as a
good ploy towards attracting eyeballs for the movie channel.
