 Hi Vithur,

 thanks for the transcript

I have one small suggestion for you... If you can tag the Rahmania
transcript posts with some label, it will be easy to search the archives.
For instance, if u add [Rahmania] in ur subject line, we can find all
Rahmania interviews by searching for this... similarly you can put
something like [VM] for vairamuthu neram transcripts.

It would be great if you do this..

 Cheers,

Actor cum Asst Director Ramesh Kanna ( Asst to Dir K.S. Ravikumar ) in
 Rahmania

He has worked as an Associate Director in the film Muthu, and had acted in
various films like Padaiyappa, Thenali, Varalaaru.

Q :- How and when did you meet Rahman ?

RK :- That's a very memorable and an excitable experience. When I was
working as an Asst Director, at that time, Illayaraja Sir was in peak, and
everyone had a burning desire to meet him, and sit for his compositions.
Everyone used to dream of working with Illayaraja, and do a film.

At that time, Rahman had come out with Roja, and everyone was talking about
it. The music was totally different, and everyone was telling, a small boy
had come up with such music. That film became a big hit, and his entry was
big, and washed out all other people.

From that time, I had a burning desire to be part of Rahman Sir 's
compositions. During my earlier time, I silently used to go and sit off in
Illayaraja 's compositions, and he used to stare at me..

First and foremost, I met Rahman Sir, during Muthu Film time. Myself,
Rahman Sir, Director K.S. Ravikumar, Rajni Sir, Thenappan, Vairamuthu
went to Cochin, and took a room there in a Hotel. Rahman Sir was in the
adjacent room. Rajni Sir came just for the composing of the music, and he
has lots of love for Rahman Sir.

We four members would be staying in a room, and Rahman Sir would alone stay
in another room. He would come and participate in some discussions in the
day, and when we were asleep in the night, he used to play some sounds in
his keyboard. I used to silently sneak out to hear them. Next day, he used
to play something and show it to everyone. I didn't have any knowledge on
Charanam or pallavi, but our director used to have some feel about the same.
When Rajni Sir used to ask Enna pa. What is this ?. what is that ?.
Rahman Sir used to answer, Don't worry. Pls wait and everything would
 come out fine.

And everyone knows how great a hit the film Muthu was. From that time, the
fear of Rahman Sir used to reduce in me, as he used to behave in a very
 simple manner all the time.

Once , when I went to the studio at night, I could see Director Subhash
Ghai sleeping in a corner, and in another corner was Dir. Shankar. Everyone
sleeping in a corner, and I used to feel, OMG. I have come to a very
big place. I need to be careful. Rahman sir used to keep working late night
inside the studio, with his tunes. I had lot of experiences with Rahman Sir
 , while working for Muthu.

 Interesting Incident with Rahman

One song was supposed to be shot in Mysore. They were supposed to give me
the song, and I was supposed to take it to Mysore. So Director told me to
come in the next flight. The same night, when I went to Rahman Sir, he told
me to wait. I was sitting there, and he was doing something out there. He
went off upstairs after night 1 AM , for doing Namaz. He didn't return for
about 90 minutes, and so, I slept off in the sofa kept nearby. So, Rahman
Sir having composed, the song, made everything ready, and told his people to
give it to me before 4 AM. Suddenly, I woke up and saw no one present in the
Studio, and I was afraid that the Director would scold me for getting it
 late.

I was fear struck, that the crew would scold me if I don't get the song the
next day, and to my utter surprise, saw Rahman Sir sleeping just below me. I
had a doubt , if it was Rahman Sir himself. It was a great shock to me.
Slowly and stealthily, I went and opened the door, and there was a person by
name Sukumar, who told, that everything was ready and that I can leave.

Lata Mangeshkar Interview to NDTV ...Transcript

NDTV's Sreenivasan Jain got talking to Lata Mangeshkar about life, music and
the studio Bombay Talkies. Here's are some snippets from the interview.

NDTV: Namaskar. Thank you so much for doing this. The wonderful thing is that
when we were talking a little while back. You told me that Bombay Talkies has a
special meaning for you.

Lata Mangeshkar: Definitely. That is because my playback singing career started
with Bombay Talkies. There used to be a studio called Bombay Talkies, who's
owners were Ashok Kumar and Watcha. Before that, it was originally owned by
Devika Rani. After she left, Ashok Kumar started running it.

NDTV: So you got your first break in the Bombay Talkies studio?

Lata Mangeshkar: Yes, definitely.

NDTV: How did that happen?

Lata Mangeshkar: What happened was that I started out as an actress but I never
used to like acting. I used to work with master Vinayak.

NDTV: Even then you acted in about seven to eight Hindi and Marathi films.

Lata Mangeshkar: Yes, I acted in films but I never enjoyed it as I was very
young. I used to hate putting on make up and having to laugh and cry in front
of the camera. I used to love singing. I was always attracted to it since
childhood. Then in 1947, Master Vinayak passed away and our company, Praful
Pictures was shut down. I started playback singing after that. I went to
Filmistan and after hearing me sing, Haiderji said that he wanted me to sing
for a film. But the owner of Filmistan, Mukherjee Sahib said that my voice will
not suit the film's actress as it was too thin.

NDTV: He told you that your voice was too thin?

Lata Mangeshkar: Well, he didn't tell me directly, but he told the music
director and I was rejected. But Master Ghulam Ali Sahib never told me this. He
just asked me to leave the studio with him. He was very disappointed with the
rejection as he was the one who had discovered Noor Jehan and he was very
respected in the industry. So, he took me to the station and we took a train to
Malad, where Bombay Talkies was located. There he made me practice for two to
three days and after that we recorded the song.

NDTV: And this was the song from the film Mahal?

Lata Mangeshkar: No, Mahal came later that was by Temton Prakash. This was for
the film Majboor where I sang with Mukesh bhaiya and the words were something
like Ek Angreji chora chala gaya.

NDTV: So will you sing that for us?

Lata Mangeshkar: No, I don't even remember the words.

NDTV: So, you were discovered after that song?

Lata Mangeshkar: Yes, after that I got more films. There was a film called
Ziddi that I did with Kishore Kumar. Both of us were new at that time. After
that I did Mahal. After that there was no looking back. There were songs like
Aayega Ayega...

Yes, then Naushad Sahib called me. I did films like Andaaz, Badi Bahen etc. and
my songs became hit.

NDTV: So, no one must have ever said that your voice was too thin after that!
Also, when you entered the scene there were singers like Noor Jehan, Suraiya
etc. But they had a different style.

Lata Mangeshkar: By the time I started out, Noor Jehan had already left for
Pakistan. Surayia was still there but she was not a playback singer. She was an
actress who used to sing her own songs. Her voice was good, but after a while
her film releases decreased. After that it was just me, Geeta Dutt and after a
while Asha (Asha Bhonsle).

NDTV: People have often said that your dominance in the field of playback
singing was so great that no one else got a chance. How do you respond to such
criticism?

Lata Mangeshkar: I don't think that is true. I don't think we stopped anyone
because at that time we had so much work that we use to refuse entire films.
Actually this rumour started when a music director told a playback singer that
he couldn't work with her as I wouldn't approve it. So, people started saying
that Asha and I were not giving others a chance.

NDTV: Which music director said this?

Lata Mangeshkar: There was a music director.

NDTV: You must reveal this secret to us on Bombay Talkies.

Lata Mangeshkar: No, actually the director didn't want to work with her but he
didn't know how to turn her down. So, he just said that I wouldn't like it. I
came to know about all this much later and people started talking after this.
Several other playback singers also started claiming that I was hampering their
career.

NDTV: Yes, Vani Jairam said that you didn't allow her to sing.

Lata Mangeshkar: I have never blocked anyone. I never felt the need to do it as
I was very busy myself.

NDTV: How were the relations between you and Ashaji? Because both of you are
sisters and have had very successful careers. There must have been some rivalry
between both of you?

Lata Mangeshkar:No, never. That's because both Asha and I had different styles.

A. R. Rahman speaks on 'Marma Yogi' IndiaGlitz
[Saturday, September 06, 2008]
'Marma Yogi', a mega-budget project set in the sixth century A.D. will
bring Kamal Haasan and A. R. Rahman together after a gap of almost eight
years. The last time Rahman scored music for a Kamal film was Thenali.

'It is very early to comment on the film but what I can say now is that
I will do a bit of research, since this is a period film,' he says.

And how about working in an animation film – Sultan, The Warrior?
'It is exciting, no doubt. It offers endless scope,' he puts it
succinctly. Directed by Soundarya, daughter of Rajinikanth, the 3-D
animation flick will feature the superstar as a mythological, larger
than life hero. The multi-lingual film is being made in English, Hindi,
Tamil and Telugu.

Rahman has no intentions on working only for big banners. 'I would work
in ventures where the focus is concentrated on music. That was the case
with 'Sakkarakatti'. I am pleased the songs have gone down well with the
audience'.

train to Malad, where *Bombay Talkies* was located. There he made me
practice for two to three days and after that we recorded the song.

*NDTV*: And this was the song from the film *Mahal*?

*Lata Mangeshkar*: No, *Mahal* came later that was by Temton Prakash. This
was for the film *Majboor* where I sang with Mukesh *bhaiya* and the words
were something like *Ek Angreji chora chala gaya.*

*NDTV*: So will you sing that for us?

*Lata Mangeshkar*: No, I don't even remember the words.

*NDTV*: So, you were discovered after that song?

*Lata Mangeshkar*: Yes, after that I got more films. There was a film
called *Ziddi* that I did with Kishore Kumar. Both of us were new at that
time. After that I did *Mahal*. After that there was no looking back.
There were songs like *Aayega Ayega...*

Yes, then Naushad Sahib called me. I did films like *Andaaz, Badi Bahen*etc.
 and my songs became hit.

*NDTV*: So, no one must have ever said that your voice was too thin after
that! Also, when you entered the scene there were singers like Noor Jehan,
Suraiya etc. But they had a different style.

*Lata Mangeshkar*: By the time I started out, Noor Jehan had already left
for Pakistan. Surayia was still there but she was not a playback singer. She
was an actress who used to sing her own songs. Her voice was good, but after
a while her film releases decreased. After that it was just me, Geeta Dutt
and after a while Asha (Asha Bhonsle).

*NDTV*: People have often said that your dominance in the field of
playback singing was so great that no one else got a chance. How do you
 respond to such criticism?

*Lata Mangeshkar*: I don't think that is true. I don't think we stopped
anyone because at that time we had so much work that we use to refuse entire
films. Actually this rumour started when a music director told a playback
singer that he couldn't work with her as I wouldn't approve it. So, people
started saying that Asha and I were not giving others a chance.

*NDTV*: Which music director said this?

*Lata Mangeshkar*: There was a music director.

*NDTV*: You must reveal this secret to us on *Bombay Talkies*.

*Lata Mangeshkar*: No, actually the director didn't want to work with her
but he didn't know how to turn her down. So, he just said that I wouldn't
like it. I came to know about all this much later and people started talking
after this. Several other playback singers also started claiming that I was
 hampering their career.

*NDTV*: Yes, Vani Jairam said that you didn't allow her to sing.

*Lata Mangeshkar*: I have never blocked anyone. I never felt the need to
do it as I was very busy myself.

*NDTV*: How were the relations between you and Ashaji?

Dear All, ( A must watch video also... )

ARR Interview to Sun TV on Sakkarakatti ( Absolutely rocking one )

My heartfelt thanks to Sun TV for organizing this wonderful interview, and
also for deputing a logical and a reasonable interviewer to interview the
Meastro. He asked logical questions and it was a great treat.

 INTRODUCTION

The Interviewer starts off by saying this

When some one went and asked Swami Vivekanada, as to who is the person
who is always successful in life ?. for which he replied, Whenever some
one demeans you, be true to yourself. When some one praises you, don get
swayed. That is the hall mark of a true successful man. I keep remembering
one man 's name always, when I remember these words from Vivenakanda. A man
with lot of awards, achievement, rising number of success figures, and
surrounded by praises always, but still unchanged by the same smile, the
same simple laugh, and sweet speech. The man whom I have been referring to,
is not an alien born in some corner of the world. He is our own native, a
person born on the soils of Tamil Nadu, a person who is bringing fame to
each and every Tamilian across the globe, a wonderful brother and is none
other than the Musical Storm A.R. Rahman.

Come , lets go and meet him.

Q :- There are so many Film Directors waiting for you, to make films,
only if you compose music for them. In your success endeavours so far,
Sakkarakatti has also been listed now. What do you feel about the success of
this film music ? How did you accept this project and accepted the film ?

AR :- I have earlier worked with Kalaipuli Dhanu with Kizhakku Cheemayile.
He was the person, who introduced the Director Krishna of Jillenu Oru
Kaadhal to me. At that time, he was telling me that his son would be doing a
film, and asked if I could do the music for the film. I was busy at that
time. He told, he is ready to wait for any amount of time. Usually, people
say like that, but after three months, they would come and ask for a tune
saying that the heroine is leaving somewhere etc .

But they waited for 1.5 years with patience. Whenever I used to get time,
I used to give them a song. So, its not my success, but its their success
that they waited patiently. It's a success to the trust that they had in me.
Prabhu is also a very patient guy, and he has religuosly spent time for
making the song good, with all graphics.

( A new version of Taxi Taxi was shown…. Just AWESOME ….)

Q :- You were talking about working with Dhanu Sir. And this is your third
film with him. What would you like to say about the human being Dhanu ?

Ar :- Everyone has his own quality, and the quality in Dhanu Sir, is that
he uses his talent to the utmost extent. Its only certain producers, who
spend so much of energy in highlighting their films to such extent.

Q :- Normally, when people remember the word ' Taxi, they think of a
means of conveyance. But now, people are associating it with the song from
Sakkarakatti. Has this been specially or purposefully laid for attracting
the youngsters, or is it comes natural to you ?

AR :- Every three years, there is a change in the trend. The trend has
been changing since the 90s. 92 it was different; 95 was different and 98
was different….. Now the trend is towards reggae style, Spanish, etc …So, we
thought of getting all those styles in the song. Actually, this was a last
thought that we got. This song was composed in the fag end. Originally, the
song was of a different tune , like a bhangra type. We had to modify the
same, and in the last moment, a magic happened. We wanted a song like an
 engine.

Wembley Arena.I love ARR Sir music since the first time I listened to Roja.
At that time I bet with everybody that ARR will be the best musician ever,
many people were not convinced as they use to say that we can not judge
someone on one or two albums. But I was 1000 % convinced that he will be the
best. And now I am very proud of him and love him for several reasons :

He is from India (my mother land),
He is better that any musician in the world (for his excellence in
different kind of music style, indian, western, chinese, etc... Other
musicians can never be compared to him as they are not versatile as he is,
even if they are known to be the best in the world),
He is very humble even if he is the best,
He is a great human being (for all his attention to poor people, for
helping society, and fighting against disease, poverty, etc...),
I totally share and admire his thoughts and attitude of being a great
indian citizen (as he wants India to become more developped, he wants the
success of every indian, he wants to share his experience and his love with
 everybody),
I have never been disappointed by him, my expectation from him (his music
and his behaviour) has always been fulfilled by him.Being born to indian
parents in Cambodia, I lived in Reunion Island (near Mauritius Island) from
1 to 6 tears old, then I discovered this lovely country, my mother land
INDIA where I lived from 6 to 18 years old (in Pondicherry between 1980 to
1992) At that time, I always wished that one day, the great country of my
origin, INDIA, will become the powerful and richest country in the world. I
always wanted to see in India, big high ways, big buildings, big cities
(like in Paris, Singapour, London). I had lot of friends suffering from
poverty, I helped them as much I could. so my dreams was also to see every
indian living in good social condition, good salary, good way of life. I
remember people standing in front of electronic shops to see Oliyum Oliyum
on friday at 8 pm. These people could not afford having a TV set at home or
a video cassette player. I don't want to recall in my memory people begging
for food, it was very sad and it gives me a culpability feeling. Thank God,
I think today this has changed a little. I know that there is still a long
way to go, but I am confident, as if people reacts like our ARR Sir, things
can only become better. My love to my mother land allows me to appreciate
the mindset of people like ARR Sir. I realize it recently in 2004, when I
listened to the songs of SWADES which made me cry a lot as I did not have
the opportunity to return to India since 2000 To compose songs like the
one in Swades, one should really love India and its people. The fact that
ARR love us (indians) give him a different height and respect which even
high authorities of the indian government recognized. I never met ARR
(except seing him on the stage during the London concert), but if I meet him
one day and if I have the opportunity to talk with him, I will first express
before anything, my love for India and its people. That will be I think the

The Last Qn his Answer were especially good.
Rahman is stunning in one of the Photographs ;) here is the link for it.
http://www.citymasala.com/August2008/Aug08.pdf

A R Rahman, the Mozart of Asia, needs no introduction.
He is as well known in India as he is all
over the world and his appeal lies in the way he
blends popular music into the classical and remains
true to music at its very core. When we
hear the Bombay Theme music in Lord of War
and Chaiya Chaiya in Inside Man, every Indian
heart swells with pride.

When CityMasala called me for an interview with
Rahmanji, I was thrilled. I am fortunate enough
to know this great musician. When I emailed him
asking for an interview for CityMasala he replied
immediately in his endearing way... soon. He
was busy with the opening of his Music Conservatory
and many other projects. I contacted him
initially in February of 2008 and he kept in touch
constantly to let me know he would do the interview
soon. Finally, my wait came to an end. He
said he would talk to me after his interview with
Hi! Blitz on Saturday, May 31, 2008.

When Rahmanji finally called me to do the interview,
the first thing that came out of my mouth
was a squeak! Then I took a deep breath and
thanked him for giving me his time. He was at his
music studio and I could hear the hustle and bustle
of traffic as we started to talk. It was late in
the night for him but he answered every question
with openness and passion. He was relaxed and
did not hurry me to get it over with.

LK: Rahmanji, first of all, congratulations on all
the awards you have received in the last few
months, both as a composer and for Best Background
Score for Guru. It is you who has made
the background score as important as it is both
in Guru and Jodha Akbar. How difficult or different
is it from composing a regular song?
ARR: It is not tough. You just have to absorb the
film completely, and the music. Sometimes you
go with it and sometimes, you go against it.

LK: Do you see the whole movie at one time or
one scene at a time?
ARR: I see the whole movie first and then I take
certain sequences and start working with them.
Sometime we do generic themes and try to make
them fit in the movie.

CM: Your fame precedes you, yet you remain
elusive to the media and people know very little
about who you really are. Is this because you are
innately shy or because it is unnecessary for
people to get to know you – your music touching
their hearts is sufficient?
ARR: (chuckling) I think of it this way - I am not
an actor, I'm just a musician so, all people want
from me is my music. Although, I have done
many interviews, I always feel it is not necessary.
For me it is just the music and the love for it.
LK: I agree wholeheartedly and we all enjoy your
love for your music through your compositions.

LK: What gives you the most creative satisfaction,
music for Tamil or Hindi movies, for Hollywood
or Broadway musicals or private albums
like Vandhe Mathiram?
ARR: Music is just one element in the film when
you take a classic. The composition definitely
has its own value such as a piece like Bombay
Theme which you enjoy by itself on the radio.
When you take a movie, the music may be good
but the movie doesn't do well. The whole impact
of the music is halved, or a percentage of it is, so
it is important when the whole theme succeeds in
a movie. That is when I get full satisfaction.
When you consider Jodha Akbar in this scenario,
or Yuva or Rang de Basanti, it gives me a lot of
satisfaction because it has reached many more
people and they understand what went behind it.

CM: You say you are a deeply spiritual person
and that Sufism is where religion and music
meet – could you elaborate on this?
ARR: I think art is a reflection of what is inside.
Sufism is what you feel when you meditate, what
you feel when you listen to beautifully composed
music. It is said that there are different names for
God and some of the names don't have words. In
my opinion, and I feel this very deeply, music is
one of the major Gods. There are no words in it,
there is feeling in it and spirituality in it.

LK: Is there any song from any period that you
wish you had composed?
ARR: Hmmm ... I can't think of any because I
appreciate people for what they do. Each one has
their share of creativity that God has given them
and I value that and respect that, and so I look at
it in a different way (laughs).

LK: You have had the chance to work and create music all over the world.
Other than in India itself, where do you think Indian music in particular is
at
its most vibrant and creative?
ARR: There is good and bad all over. There are some great musicians in
Kerala,
some in Chennai, Calcutta, Bombay and some in Rajasthan. I don't think the
place is important, it is just the feeling inside. Some musicians are yet to
