Actually, the 1947 Earth zindagi was in two parts.

Srinivas gave the only the prelude that was same in either part. The
real mukhda was in female chorus, and then the main stanza in one song
was by Sujata and in the other song by Sukhwinder.

Having a mukhda entirely by chorus is not really a popular thinggy in
bolly music, especially when three lovely voices are there in the song.
:-) ARR does dare prevalent notions. :-)

Now, if you look at the lyrics of the Srinivas' prelude:

> Jo Afsaane Dil Ne Buney
> Unko Koi Dil Hi Suney
 >
> Hum Haule Haule Pyaar Ki Dhundhli Fizayon Meinaaye
> Gehre Gehre Hain Khwaab Ki Neeli Ghatayon Ke Saaye
> Hum Tum Dono Khoye Khoye
> Sapne Dekhein Jaage Soye
> Gumsum Hairaan

That is a "meet" song. Both are together. He is addressing his beloved
and telling about the environment. They are with each other, they are
enjoying the moment, they are even dreaming.

So, it was indeed contemplative due to the worrisome deathly background
in the film that was heaving high on their mind, but it was no way with
any tinge of sadness sense as the yuvvraaj zindagi is.

And who can forget the sujata part that was right at the first sex
between the duo.

> Behti Hain Chingariyaan Jaise Sar Se Paon Tak Nas Nas Mein
> Halka Halka Hosh Hai Lekin Kuchh Bhi Nahin Ab Mere Bas Mein
> Mere Ang Ang Mein Becheini Bijli
> Banke Lehraaye
> Ek Meethe Meethe Dard Ka Badal
> Tan Man Par Chhaye
> Saansein Uljhein Dhadkein
> Lekin Jaane Kaisi Meri Mushkil Hogi Aasaan

It was also contemplative as it rightly expresses how a girl might
physically feel when making love with her beloved for the first time,
yet it is poles apart, eons apart, on the opposite extreme from the
yuvvraaj zindagi.

And, the sukhwinder part when Aamir comes to know that girl is in love
with someone else, and his heart breaks and he turns into a cruel satan
out to harm the very person whom he loved.

> Arre Kaash Meri In Aankhon Ki Ab Roshni Bujh Jaaye
> Maine Dekha Tha Jo Khwaab Vo Mujhko Na Kabhi Yaad Aaye
> Aise Barse Gam Ke Teekhey
> Toote Dil Ke Sare Sheeshey
> Dil Hai Veeraan

He is decisively sad to the extent that he wishes that he goes blind
after what he has seen. His world has got destroyed. He is reminiscing.
That is no way subtle, in the way yuvvraaj zindagi is.

So, I would say that both 1947 zindagi and yuvvraaj zindagi both are
miles apart, and that is the beauty of either of them.
--

One other ARR song that comes to mind is: Taal's nahin saamne. Such a
great song, but, while we are trying to pinpoint the exact emotion, in
nahin saamne also, the guy is lost in the thoughts of his beloved and
enjoying the feeling. He even feels the presence of the beloved right
with him. So, that again goes different from yuvvraaj zindagi.

*Aamir Khan has been deeply moved by the sudden death of H. Sridhar, a
four-time national award-winning sound engineer. He flew all the way to
Chennai to attend the funeral of Sridhar.

Sridhar has worked in films like Rangeela, Lagaan and Ghajini. In fact, he
has extensively worked with AR Rahman.

An industry source says: "As soon as Aamir got the news, he flew to Chennai
on Monday night to attend the funeral of Sridhar. Aamir had come across
Sridhar many a times while working for films especially in those which have
seen A.R. Rahman compose the music like Lagaan, Mangal Pandey and even in
Ghajini. He has also worked in Dil Chahta Hai that had Aamir in it. In fact,
he was working on Ghajini the night he died. Aamir obviously was disturbed
and he decided to be there. Sridhar was only 48 years old and had a special
place in Aamir's heart."

Rahman has apparently known Sridhar, who was also a talented guitarist, for
around 25 years. He has also worked in films like Dil Se, Guru, Water,
Provoked, Swades, Satya and Bombay. Sridhar is survived by his wife and two
sons – Vinay and Vishal.

Dear and Respected Rahmanji

I have a very serious and sincere request to you, and I am writing this on
behalf of my mother, who is also a very ardent admirer of you and your
music. It is a known fact that you do your recordings and compositions in
the night, and spend a lot of sleepless nights toiling out for bringing out
world class music. I have personally observed and heard everyone assosciated

Pls, Pls take care of your health, and if possible, Pls consider a request
to change the schedule of your work to working in days, as working
continuosly in the nights take a very heavy toll on one's health and well
being. I have personally experienced this in my past.

I pray God to give you a very sound health and bless you with Divine
Inspirations for giving Divine Music always..

I hope this request turns into a reality.

Thank God; Thank ARR.

[arr] Slumdog Music Review - A pulsating score

2008-12-03 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
:

The Music of Slumdog Millionaire

A pulsating score from A.R. Rahman drives the underdog film, with help from
M.I.A.

The soundtrack to the film 'Slumdog Millionaire' - N.E.E.T.

Movie: Slumdog Millionaire
Drake Lelane,  Dec 03, 2008

The film Slumdog Millionaire is a frenetic portrait of Mumbai, a gritty
fairytale of beating the odds and standing firm in the face of adversity, and
propelling it forward is the pulsating score by A.R. Rahman. In the wake of the
recent tragedy in Mumbai, the film -- and its soundtrack -- becomes even more
visceral than the ebullient depiction of the Indian city.
To be honest, I had just started to write something about the soundtrack last
week when the news of the terrorist attack came, and I couldn't help wondering
if this tragedy would now be linked to the film, for good and for bad. Hearing
M.I.A. singing, "Some some some I some I murder, some I some I let go" in the
song "Paper Airplanes" while watching the news unfold can steer one's thoughts
in the oddest of directions. That song of course has made her a star, and one
of the drawbacks of her higher profile is that it has also made her a target.
This summer M.I.A. had to release a statement disclaiming accusations that she
supports terrorism, a rumored link she's repeatedly had to dispel thanks to
both her estranged father's participation in the Sri Lankan terrorist outfit
LTTE and her arguable glamorization of their cause. Of course, M.I.A. is no
terrorist, she just has a natural fascination with the cause, having grown up
with it. (Critic Robert Christgau
wrote a great piece on this struggle nearly four years ago, and it holds up
especially well.)
"Paper Airplanes," of course, got its second life this past summer thanks to
being featured in the trailer for Pineapple Express, but it should be pointed
out that Slumdog had it first, and that once you see the song used in the film,
it will cease to be "that song from that stoner comedy trailer." Director Danny
Boyle always had that song in mind for the film, but for the score, he had his
sights set on White Stripes' Jack Black. Thankfully, the prospect of Black
taking a year off to write music in India was a bit of a pipe dream, and Boyle
settled on the "Mozart of Madras," Bollywood legend A.R. Rahman.
For those not familiar with Bollywood, A.R. Rahman is like Michael Jackson and
John Williams all rolled into one -- king of both pop and score. At only 42,
Rahman is the 8th best-selling music artist of all-time, and with a long career
still ahead of him he will undoubtably work his way further up the list. Boyle
let Rahman loose, asking that he create something with a pulsating rhythm and
that he resist sentiment. As Boyle has been retelling it at post-screening
Q&A's across the country, "I told him, 'Never put a cello in my film!'"
implying his need to keep the film clear of too much melodrama. (This, along
with a sort of nostalgic look at growing up in a shantytown, is what makes the
film a bit more like its Brazilian doppelgänger, City of God.)
The result is an intoxicating mix of old and new India, juxtaposing classic
Indian instrumentation with big beats and hip-hop synth sounds (hear "Mausam &
Escape"). Early in the film, it's his collaboration with M.I.A., "O Saya," that
truly sucks you in, sweeping you into the gritty shantytowns of Mumbai. Rahman
also mixes in some popular Bollywood cues, giving the fans of the genre some of
extra thrills. The song "Ringa Ringa" that plays as Latika dances is actually a
reworking of the popular Bollywood song "Choli ke peeche" from the film
Khalnayak (1993). Rahman even utilized the same voice talent, Alka Yagnik and
Ila Arun, who sang the original chart-topping version. Meanwhile, for a
gangster-related scene Rahman borrows the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy song "Aaj Ki Raat"
from the recent Bollywood gangster film Don: The Chase Begins Again (see video
of original use).
The final song in the film (and on the soundtrack) is "Jai Ho," which, along
with the cast's dancing, has the distinction of keeping the audience in their
seats through the credits. It's an explosion of joy that the film and audience
feel like they've earned, witnessing all that Jamal has triumphed over. Whether
or not the film is married to tragedy remains to be seen (it's still playing on
less than 50 screens), but the ending goes a long way towards distancing itself
in spirit from the evil the city just endured.

I think Unnikrishnan had once said he would prefer to continue with classical
music rather than sing for movies maybe that's why he is not seen in the
filmworld.

I think ARR made the perfect selection.

And Im also think that Karthik is the ultimate choice for this song

ARR knows wat to deliver, how it deliver and when it deliver

a very unconventional singer for this song.
Eccentric voice can make it even more attractive.

to be honest jai ho is the last favourite of the album.

it's nothing compared to rest of the tracks... especially: o... saya, liquid
dance, mausam & escape, millionaire, dream on fire, gangsra blue or even "aaj
ki raat (the version at this album is massively improved by ARR)".

just listen to the tracks to believe it... and trust me, the album is not only
abt "jai ho".

it has got bunch of completely mind blowing tracks.

go to online stores/sites and check the tracks... NOW (check all the tracks 1
by 1 (skip M.I.A. tracks - 4 and 5))!

it's the ultimate answer for all those who thinks "ARR has lost it..."; "he is
not the same..."; "his old compositions were better... " or 90's were the best".

rahman is the best of the BEST!

i am out of words... lost in the tracks...!!!

It's quite easy to tell this is a Rahman track with hints of his past numbers

Bollywood Music Review: Hit or Sh!t?: 'Ghajini'
December 02 2008 15:10 PST

Music by: AR Rahman

Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi

Singers: Suzanne D'Mello, Karthik, Javed Ali, Sonu Nigam, Benny Dayal, Pravin
Mani and Shreya Ghoshal

The expectations behind Aamir Khan's 'Ghajini' are immense!  First of all Aamir
Khan is a huge name in itself and then you add in ace music man AR Rahman and
the expectations hit the roof!  In fact, many are claiming it's the biggest
soundtrack of the year.  After hearing the first snippets of 'Guzarish' which
was the first trailer released, my curiosity peaked and I knew if the song was
a precursor to the rest of the album, it would no doubt be a winner.  So did it
live up to my expectations?  Read on to find out!

'Guzarish': The teaser track hit the airwaves not too long ago and it's already
creating waves.  The beautiful track is brilliant and there's not doubt it will
be playing in my iPod way beyond the films release.  Everything in the track
melds beautifully, from Javed Ali's vocals to Rahman's music and Prasoon
Joshi's touching lyrics.  One listen and you'll be hooked.

'Aye Bachchu': The track is quite different from the romantic 'Guzarish.'
Suzanne D'Mello belts out the rock tinged party song.  It has an undeniable
toe-tapping rhythm with a western beat.  It's quite easy to tell this is a
Rahman track with hints of his past numbers from 'Chak De! India' and
'Hindustani.'

'Kaise Mujhe': The haunting track's musical composition is impeccable, the
beat, the beautiful sitar, slow build up, touching lyrics and Shreya Ghoshal's
vocals work magically.  One complaint however is, I can't help but think how
the track would've sounded had it been sung by Sonu Nigam, or Shaan as opposed
to Benny Dayal.  It may not have 'hit' written all over it at first listen, but
it will resonate with audiences after the release for sure.

'Bekha':  From the first note you know you're in for something different.  The
track isn't something you'd typically hear in a Bollywood soundtrack, with bits
of the piano and the unexpected use of the saxophone.  You can't help but be
reminded by 'Main Aisa Kyun Hoon' from 'Lakshya.'  It should be interesting to
see how it's pictured, as this is the track that will feature Aamir in 6
different looks.  Karthik's vocals are perfectly suited for 'Bekha.'

'Latto':  One of the best upbeat tracks off the album.  Shreya Ghoshal shows
off her versatility with this one, as does Rahman, as it's the only track on
the soundtrack that doesn't scream Rahman from first listen.  The fun carefree
track will have you bobbing your head.

The soundtrack to 'Ghajini' has chartbuster written all over it! The winning
combo of Aamir and Rahman does not disappoint!  There's no doubt we'll be
hearing the songs well into 2009.

My picks:  'Guzarish,' 'Bekha' and 'Latto'
