2009-05-14 Thread Vithur
* AR Rahman: Scoring 'Slumdog'*
**
*CNN)* -- He's the man who helped make "Slumdog Millionaire" an
international hit, scoring the soundtrack of the Oscar winning film. Despite
his performance at the Oscars ceremony and being caught up in all the glitz
and adulation, Rahman is a reluctant star.

Feeling like a millionaire: AR Rahman picked up two Oscar's for best
original song and best score.

He's worked on films since he was a teenager, taking over the role of family
breadwinner after his father died and followed in his footsteps as a
composer.

While he had stints writing advertising jingles in India, composing for
films has been his life's work so far, yet from his studio in Chennai he
admitted to CNN he didn't want to score films.

"I kept saying next year I'll quit, next year I'll quit. And finally because
I was sucked into it more and more, now I have the Oscars" he said.

His Oscar performance and acceptance speech was one of the most memorable at
this year's awards.

"I thought if I get it I'll be quiet, if I don't get it I'll be quiet, so I
was training my mind not to get over-emotional. So when I first got it I
didn't feel it at all, it was like a rehearsal for me. When I finished my
performance then I felt at ease and then I became very philosophical as you
know, and I chose love over hate and all this stuff," he told CNN.

Feted by many in media, his hit "Jai ho" was covered by the Pussy Cat Dolls,
but the softly spoken Rahman doesn't find it hard to remain grounded. Rahman
runs a music school in Chennai, the KM Music Conservatory that keeps him
motivated and reminds him that music has a potency that can transform lives.

"Music can do so many things. I have my foundation, I have my music school.
I have people teaching, kids are learning, so I take this as an advantage,
the popularity and taking that and putting it into good things, which
motivated me to work harder," he said.

As well as working on more Hindi films, Hollywood beckons, if only for a new
experience. There have also been rumors he may score the next James Bond
film.

"I have a couple of offers from Hollywood. Pure American movies which I
thought for the heck of it let's do it and a couple of other surprises that
you'll know very soon if it works out. Big surprises I think," he said. E-mail

First Look: Couples Retreat

Posted on Friday, December 19th, 2008 at 12:51 pm by: Peter Sciretta

USA Today has a first look at the cast of Peter Billingsley’s directorial
debut, Couples Retreat. Based on an idea by Vince Vaughn, and scripted by Jon
Favreau, the PG-13 (ick!) comedy stars Favs, Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Faizon
Love, Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis, Kali Hawk, and Malin Akerman. Jean Reno and
John Michael Higgins co-star as the resort’s mastermind and the therapist.
The movie will tell the story a married couple, played by Bell and Bateman, who
drag their three married friends to a couples herapy vacation in order to save
on costs. The other couples quickly learn that participation in the resort’s
couples therapy is not optional, and they become “forced to scrutinize the
states of their own marriages.” Vaughn gives us a character rundown:
“Jason and Kristen are Type A’s struggling to have kids. Faizon and his wife
have just separated, and he is dating a young girl from Foot Locker (Hawk). Me
and my wife (Akerman) are swamped with the kids and work. Favreau and Kristin
Davis are secretly not completely faithful to each other.”
Entertainment Tonight has a set visit video report, which you can watch here.
Billingsley began has career as a child actor, best known as Ralphie in A
Christmas Story, and later the producer of Favreau’s films: Made, Zathura, The
Break-Up, Iron Man and Four Christmases. The Universal Pictures comedy doesn’t
currently have a release date

Do you think the actors from Slumdog Millionaire will benefit from its
success?
That’s a difficult question to answer. The good thing about this movie was
that it was a movie with no big budget or Hollywood stars, and no American
content so to speak, winning all these Oscars. It’s like someone in American
making a film in Boston and winning all the Filmfare
awards.
I’d say it’s wonderful for A R Rahman and the grace with which he has
accepted all the accolades was heartwarming. He’s an asset to India.

How much do you think the Slumdog factor matters to your cinema?
I don’t think it matters much to what I do. Though I don’t doubt moreIndian
subjects will be greenlighted in the West. That’s not necessarily a good
thing. I wouldn’t have made Slumdog Millionaire the way Danny Boyle made if
it was offered to me. I’d have made a different film. That doesn’t mean
Danny Boyle hasn’t made a film from his heart. For me what I’m doing in my
new film It’s A Wonderful Afterlife is what I’m comfortable with. For a
while something vital was missing from the script. I realized it was the
Gurinder Chadha factor. I am making comedy. But the human essence was
missing. I got down to it, left my kids to the nanny and got in front of the
computer. Now I’m ready.

But I think Academy has only one category for foreign films
: Best foreign films..There is nothing like 'Best Original score
in Foreign films'..
Core International projects can only fetch him more Oscars.
and I wish He gets more and more of them.

[arr] Farhan Akhtar to sing for a song in "Blue"

Out of the Blue

Farhan Akhtar to sing for AR Rahman in Blue; this will be his first song for
another actor

By Parag Maniar
Posted On Friday, May 15, 2009 at 02:21:44 AM

Farhan Akhtar can't stop smiling these days. Don't blame him. He received a
call from Oscar winner AR Rahman, who asked him to sing for him for the film
Blue.

Caught completely off guard by the call, it took time for Farhan to realise
that it was indeed Rahman who was talking to him on the phone.

A source said, "Rahman told Farhan that his voice suits a `cool' number that he
wanted him to record for Blue. Farhan, of course, agreed immediately. It was
too good an offer to resist. In fact, Farhan and Rahman met two days ago and
spoke at length about the song."

Farhan, who is currently shooting for Kartik Calling Kartik, is looking forward
to the recording.

Confirming the news, Farhan said, "I am damn excited about singing for Rahman.
I have been a great admirer of his work and have thoroughly enjoyed his
music. Our meeting was wonderful. Rahman said that he decided to use my voice
for his composition in Blue after he heard the Rock On!! album. He was
extremely soft-spoken and humble and spoke about how the past few months have
been a whirlwind ride for him. He also briefed me about the song but I don't
know whether it will be right on my part to reveal anything about it."

Ah! To even recollect ARR' s initial journey during early 90's, it gives me
immense pleasure and makes me sail back to those vintage days..where. .i
was unconciously inclined towards music only because of this wonder man, A R
Rahman..! He is the most primary reason for the transition towards Musical
world for me...:)

This time..i chose "May Maadham"..,  an album with its great melody and
Rahman's signature sheen its full glory and pomp.! I hold this album to be one
of ARR's most spectacular works ever..!!! But i am utterly disappointed by the
fact that this entire album did not do great among the masses. I guess...only
due to this fact, ARR thought of recreating the same magical score for Hindi
audiences in "Love You Hamesha.." , but again failed to create sensation due to
the bad fate of the movie... :-(

1) Maarghazhi Poove >  Shobha Chandrashekar

( Same as Ek Ladki Thi from Love You Hamesha)

Can anybody confirm me that this singer (Shobha) is the mother of
popular actor Vijay..??? If so, i wonder why she didnt continue her singing for
long time..? Nevertheless, comng to the song, it begins with a great flute
aalap with a royal touch of "Kausalya Supraja Rama..." - the Suprabhata
chantings- as its backdrops along with the techno beats by Rahman..!! Call it
fusion/ remixgets ur ears a great morning dose of pleasure..!! ! Perfect
ringtone for the mobile phonesloved across south india...even some parts of
North!! Shobha delivers a first class rendition and also the chorus part is
enchanting.. ." Particularly, towards the end, Shobha and ARR gives us a
morning classical  feast to our ears!!!
An ever memorable Rahman's creation..!! !

 2) Palakkattu Machhanukku -> Shahul Hameed, G V Prakash Kumar

(Same as Botal Tod De in Love You Hamesha)

The demised Shahul Hameed croons this song towards the fag end
of his life along with ARR's own nephew GV Prakash, who's into music these
days..!!! One yearns for Shahul to listen more n more after listening to these
songs. Its a very modern, hep, peppy, trendy song! ARR exhibits his passion for
technology and western instruments in this song so clearly that one can
picturise by hearing.!! GV Prakash, with his very shrill and kiddish voice
provides a naughty atmosphere.
Vintage Techno Rahman at his Best

3) Madrasa Sutthi Paarka -> Swarnalatha, Shahul Hameed, Manorama

"Dr r .Drio Na Drio Drio..." Thus
goes the ever chirpy and every witty Manorama, the senior most Comedienne of
Southern Cinema. Thanks to ARR a million times...for having used her voice. The
highly acclaimed Swarnalatha begins her lines with an intention to roam around
the Madras city...great easy-go rendition by her...!! Shahul Hameed and even
GVP makes a cameo in the lines.."All- in-all hero". Manorama brings up a
great wittyness to the ARR tunes...!!
    A great jolly-go-happy song..!!!

4) En Mel Vizhunda > P. Jayachandran , Chitra

(Same as Gupchup Baatein from Love You Hamesha)

The legendary singers Chitra and Jayachandran unite to leave
behind a resplendent melody which also doubles as a lullaby. A perfect bed time
song to make your senses ease and relax after a tiresome day. Rahman's lillting
tunes soothes us to the core with Naveen's ever soothing flute piece, a
magnanimous Sitar piece and the ever inspiring rendition by the singer duo.
Vairamuttu's lines again shines as bright as diamond particularly in the
Antaras..."Mannai Thirandaal Neer Irukkum...En Manadhai Thirandaal Nee
Iruppai..." Absolute Wonder
A stunning melody alias lullaby...!! !

5) Aadipparu Mangattha -> Malgudi Shubha, Sunita Rao, GV Prakash Kumar

The "Paree Hu Main.." girl Sunita Rao makes her Tamil Debut with this
racy song about a local game involving the playing cards..!! Malgudi Shubha, as
usual n as expected provides a raunchy, rustic touch to this number. GVP mouths
few lines for the boy in the film. Though not  a very very memorable song, this
song certainly has some strange stuff that makes it special. Sunita Rao quite
fumbles with her Tamil dictions, as is expected out of her..!!!
  A feel nice song..!!

6) Minnale Nee  -> S P Balasubramanyam

How can i do justice in describing such a masterpiece by my
mere words..?? I bet even best critic writer in this world would fall short of
words to describe the experience he goes through when he listens to this
song..!! To such an extent i am amaz

[arr] Why it's more important for ARR to concentrate on Musical Projects in the West

2009-05-14 Thread vimaljk
-can reach a more world-wide audience (Western music has more exposure)
-more avenue to experimentation and following own musical desires (no pressure
to follow "film" format
-more opportunity to do full-scale symphonic scores
-can work in more quality movies of world-class filmmakers
-can work with world-renowned artists
-can compose in multiple languages
-can sell more records, make more money, set more sales records (so he can
spend more time working on the projects closest to his heart)
-can be a household name throughout the world

RememberRahman has received the most attention for his outstanding work int
he masterpiece "Slumdog Millionaire"...though he has composed so many great
albums and songs throughout his career..this was the work that really put him
in the international spotlight

most importantly...

-Rahman has already reached every milestone imaginable in Indian musicit's
time for him to try greener pastures and taste even more success!!!

best of luck ARR!...we know you will continue to produce the best music the
world has ever heard!

it would be great to see him working abroad
but i think that in indian film music, we can
see melodies where are not present in international
music so i would favour national level work which
would get international appreciation
