It was a fine Sunday morning, when I got a call from my friend, cinematographer
Rajeev Menon, asking if we can meet!

The meeting happened at 5 pm that day. I was then the sub editor of India
Today, and was handling movies section too. Those days, Rajeev was working
more  on Ad films, than for movies. He told me about a youngster who was
composing for his ad films - His name is Dileep. He has tremendous music
sense. He's extremely talented in playing and handling all modern instruments.
Moreover, Mani sir has signed him on for his next movie, after listening to
some of his jingles.

Wow.. thats something new, I thought, and collected a pic of Dileep shot by
Rajeev and
his phone number from Rajeev. Next day,
I called up Dileep and he answered. I introduced myself and asked for a
meeting with him. He immediately refused saying No sir... No Interviews now!
Mani sir has asked me not to speak anything about the project!

I retorted - You dont have to speak about the movie; speak about you! I would
be pleased if India Today publishes details about the new music director who is
Mani Ratnam's new find.
I also told him that I'd already collected his photo from Rajeev Menon.
Finally, later acceded to my request!

The meeting happened at 4 pm. He was not a school kid. He was not yet a college
student. He seemed to be just in that transition phase, with a shy smile on his
face! His mom and sister were with him. His mom offered me cake and savouries
they had purchased from the neighbourhood bakery, for me. Coffee followed.

Then, we started talking. He told me a lot - about his father RK Shekar, about
how music became his full-time job after
his father's death, about the family background, about the conversion to
islam, about his name change! He mentioned that the Mani film was a God-given
gift for him. He conversed with him as though we're very close friends for a
long time! He took me to his studio and played 2 songs from his new film.

One of those songs was Chinna Chinna Aasai. After listening to it, I requested
Rahman to play it once more. He was overjoyed and played it again. Just this
one song is enough to take you to heights of fame, I told him and wished him
all luck. Other their Mani sir, others connected with the film hadn't listened
to the songs. I played it just for you. Your words are very encouraging, he
said and thanked me. When I was leaving, he came out till his front gate and
bid farewell to me.

One week later, Rahman's mom called me - When can we see my son's photo in the
magazine, dear brother? I could sense the eagerness and excitement in her
voice.

It will hit the stands in 2 days, mother. I'll come and give a few copies to
you, even before that, I told her.

En-route to my house from office, I visited Rahman's house with 5 copies of
India Today, and gave it to them. The images of the proud mother and sister,
smiling and sharing their happiness on seeing Rahman's photo in the magazine,
still remains fresh in my memories. But, Rahman took this big news in a calm
and composed manner. With a smile, he thanked me. His humbleness was there with
him right from that time.

After the release of Roja, there was no magazine which didnt feature Rahman's
photo. After that, I met him a few more times as a reporter. Much to the envy
of other reporters, he would approach me personally and talk to me like a
friend. Once, in a press meet, he openly said He's the first person to
interview me How can I not be close to him?. He hasn't yet lost that
closeness to me.

8 years later, I'd
moved from the press and started working for TV and movies. I wanted to
produce a special program for Sun TV for Tamil New Years day, in association
with my friend Balakrishnan. That program was - Special interview with

I completely agree with the author as far as AR Rahman's music in Delhi6
is concerned. They were simply magnificient, esp the Masakali number. I
didn't really think much of Masakali when I first heard it but the for
some reason, the song kept playing in my head and I kept humming it. But
as time goes, I just fell in love with the song...the moment i hear the
song today I just have to increase the volume and sing along with it.
And Rehna tu was awesome as well...if a song can be called as elegant,
then Rehna Tu is simply the most elegant song I've heard in recent times.

wow. Gayathri ji, you prompted me to confess the same.

I also had not held maskali in high esteem when I had heard it first. I
like soulful, emotional songs from our man, and I first thought this was
sort of a catchy song for street guys or kids or teens really ;-) a la
pappu can't dance, so I had left out such songs for them and didn't
hear it much then.

I have still not hear these much, but maskali indeed went on to become
so popular that it kept on reaching my ears anywhere I go, and now I say
that maskali holds a new milestone in ARR's creativity and uniqueness.
He could come up with such a song - the anecdote has it that it was ARR
who initiated to have a song on the pigeon - without the director asking
him, and what lovely freak out style it has been rendered - those phurr
phurr - if the lyrics had not been so particular in describing a pigeon,
anyone would have been thought it to be a song cheaply teasing a sexy
girl on the road - he he he - a la old cheapos like kaan me jhumka chal
me thumka kamar ke choti latke.

So, now I can appreciate how so highly creative ARR went to give masakali.

Thanks for helping me think about it and say it.

 I still
think that Delhi6 is a ripped off version of Swades. The theme is almost
the same...A guy from US comes down to India and the story goes on about
the new environment he endures. And what starts as amusement soon turned
into a big revelation to him...he sees racism, caste difference eating
into the people's mind. Women are only good for cooking and cleaning.
In fact, the same Ramayana drama potrayed in Swades, can be seen in
 Delhi6 too.

Here, please allow me to differ from you, gayathri ji.

Swades was a kiddy movie - a totally artificial one. It was a forced
movie, a made up cosmetic movie, a show case movie. There was no
reality in it. A concept was picked and a loose story was woven to give
shape to that concept. It was like a soul-less documentary like what
shyam benegal made Bose to be - ticking down a list that such and such
things are to be shown.

My personal opinion that is, about the movie, while the music by our man
was great.

On the other hand, Delhi-6 the movie was superb, excellent, one of the
most realistic and greatest movies ever made in India. It has soul -
real Indian down-to-earth soul. So many dozens of character each having
a tiny story of his own, appearing for 2 min, 5 min, 10 min on the
screen and then going behind the curtain not to be missed or noticed
while he/ she was not appearing - Well, that is how life is, that is how
mind works - concentrating on whoever is present in front of the eyes.

The actings were so natural and earthly and contained - probably except
only prem chopra who appeared quite a filmy role.

This movie can be seen a 100 times and each time you would notice new
things that you had earlier seen but had conveniently forgotten as the
next of the dozens of characters walked in to the screen.

With so many parallel and interwoven sub-stories, it must be one of the
most complex script ever written for Indian screen.

The movie flopped because of badly conceived preaching at the end.
People go to the cinema hall to get entertained, not to get an earful of
lecture. It offended the ego of Indian public and so they turned it
down. Also, it just lectured and didn't offer any as down-to-earth
simple solution for the communal harmony problem as the rest of the
movie portrayed, so the public came out of cinema halls empty handed
really, with a heavy head.

I hope Mehra learns from this fiasco of his destroying the greatest
script at the end, and he would come up with better, more earthly films
with an earthly ends.

On the other hand, I have no hope from Ashutosh Gowarikar. He has been
hit due to Aamir, SRK and Hritik so he gets financed and he has no brain
or skills and he can't make any good movie. He would continue taking big
names and those films will also be hit, however bad they are.

Rahman teams up with Tamil Nadu police IndiaGlitz [Friday, June 12,
2009]

Ever imagined a collaboration with the State government’s Police Department
and the man who stole the hearts of millions with his music? Apparently,
there is a connection.

The police department has decided on producing a short film with a view to
entice youngsters and Rahman will compose music for it.

Hoping to attract more attention of the youngsters by roping in the music
youth icon, JK Tripathi requested a meeting with the Oscar-winning composer
and asked him if he could compose music for the short film. The music
composer, who has so far been part of many social causes like The Banyan,
had given his immediate consent for the project. It may be recalled that AR
Rahman had earlier done albums like Pray For Me Brother for social causes
like eradicating poverty.

It was after this meeting that AR Rahman actually went on to win the Oscars.
Yet, despite his busy schedule post the Oscars, Rahman has clarified that he
will be part of this project as it is for a noble cause.

Rahman’s perseverance to be part of this endeavour, despite his national and
international commitments, is said to have stepped up efforts by the
department to bring out the short film quickly.

Rahman fans will get to read about the the maestro's early years soon! An
authorised biography of A.R. Rahman is being written by Kamini Mathai and
should be in bookshops in the near future.

The author will compile all the important occasions of Rahman's life, and
the book will detail his every achievement. It also talks about his father's
death, his school life, the reason why his family embraced Sufism, and his
discovery by Mani Ratnam.

Every day there is some news about the Mozart of Madras, and a biography was
long overdue. Rahman now has many international offers coming his way, and
the western audience has woken up to the achievements of Indian cinema. The
legend who created some sensational music is now famous all over the world.

An unknown fact is that there are some schools in the US where his music is
used as a case study by graduate students.

Rahman has started a music conservatory in Chennai through which he plans to
raise awareness and also impart quality music education to many talented
youngsters in India.

[arr] ‘Slumdog’ magic rubs off on India abroad | Semi ARR

2009-06-12 Thread Sreekrishnan R
Bollywood and Indian culture is getting plenty of attention worldwide — thanks
to the “Slumdog Millionaire” effect.

Danny
Boyle’s rags-to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing in a
TV game show scooped eight Academy Awards earlier this year.

The
film’s global box-office success brought its relatively unknown young
stars on the global stage (with lead actress Freida Pinto slated to
star in Woody Allen’s next project).

In the U.S., Bollywood’s
arc of influence is creating thriving ancillary industries and
garnering buzz for the likes of celebrity stylist Shalini Vadhera.

The
Los Angeles entrepreneur, with her Global Goddess beauty products, sits
atop a business that brings in a million dollars annually.

“I
always feel like Obama winning for the African Americans is ‘Slumdog’
winning for us as Indian Americans and South Asians was fantastic,” she
says.

“Because it created an awareness that there are a lot of
talented South Asians out there whether it’s in the field of
entertainment or fashion or beauty and it’s been wonderful for my
business.”

Bollywood and its steady infiltration into Western
culture is also boosting the profile of Rajan Shah, a self-taught
player and music producer.

“The other day I was walking in
Hollister and guess what music they were playing. They were playing
‘Jai Ho’ by A.R. Rahman,” says Shah, who is based in Washington D.C.

“And not just A.R. Rahman but bhangra music is everywhere now.”

What
do you think? ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and Bollywood may have helped
Indian culture make inroads into America, but is it just a temporary
phase?

  Interview with Raihanna

Q :- Your opinion about Illayaraja and A.R. Rahman ?

Music of Raja is melodious than the flute. Rahman's music is beautiful, fast
and rustic music. Raja used to act fast in the arena of music. He can
compose many songs within the same day. But Rahman isnt like that. He
sometimes, takes days to complete one particular song.

Raja has a very seperate high pedestal in Music. Some of his select songs
are very special. The songs that get released out of Rahman are less in
number. But many of his songs are very famous.

Raja is very famous in South India. But Rahman has crossed leaps and bounds
and his music has transcended to International Arenas. His success in music
is very technical and very stunning.

Just an experiment dearest friends.
Tracks are decided earlier. Just tried to arrange it. So it was a challenge 'n
fun at the same time to edit it.

I know there's so much to improve. So your valuable comments are welcome. :-)

PS. Just did it for fun. There's no wrong intention . please.

  Hey all,

I came across the blog of Kalyan Kumar, who was the sub-editor of India
Today magazine. He's also a screenplay/script writer for movies.

He was the first person to interview Rahman, and the first ever interview
of Rahman appeared in India Today.
He has written in his blog about his interaction with Rahman.

Not sure if it has been posted before!

Here's the link for the blog post (It's in Tamil... Scroll down for my
  translation)
  http://kalyanje.blogspot.com/2009/02/blog-post_26.html

  ARR pics from the blog:

  Translation:
It was a fine Sunday morning, when I got a call from my friend,
cinematographer Rajeev Menon, asking if we can meet!

The meeting happened at 5 pm that day. I was then the sub editor of India
Today, and was handling movies section too. Those days, Rajeev was working
more on Ad films, than for movies. He told me about a youngster who was
composing for his ad films - His name is Dileep. He has tremendous music
sense. He's extremely talented in playing and handling all modern
instruments. Moreover, Mani sir has signed him on for his next movie, after
listening to some of his jingles.

Wow.. thats something new, I thought, and collected a pic of Dileep shot
by Rajeev and his phone number from Rajeev. Next day, I called up Dileep and
he answered. I introduced myself and asked for a meeting with him. He
immediately refused saying No sir... No Interviews now! Mani sir has asked
me not to speak anything about the project!

I retorted - You dont have to speak about the movie; speak about you! I
would be pleased if India Today publishes details about the new music
director who is Mani Ratnam's new find.
I also told him that I'd already collected his photo from Rajeev Menon.
Finally, later acceded to my request!

The meeting happened at 4 pm. He was not a school kid. He was not yet a
college student. He seemed to be just in that transition phase, with a shy
smile on his face! His mom and sister were with him. His mom offered me cake
and savouries they had purchased from the neighbourhood bakery, for me.
  Coffee followed.

Then, we started talking. He told me a lot - about his father RK Shekar,
about how music became his full-time job after his father's death, about the
family background, about the conversion to islam, about his name change! He
mentioned that the Mani film was a God-given gift for him. He conversed with
him as though we're very close friends for a long time! He took me to his
studio and played 2 songs from his new film.

One of those songs was Chinna Chinna Aasai. After listening to it, I
requested Rahman to play it once more. He was overjoyed and played it again.
Just this one song is enough to take you to heights of fame, I told him
and wished him all luck. Other their Mani sir, others connected with the
film hadn't listened to the songs. I played it just for you. Your words are
very encouraging, he said and thanked me. When I was leaving, he came out
till his front gate and bid farewell to me.

One week later, Rahman's mom called me - When can we see my son's photo in
the magazine, dear brother? I could sense the eagerness and excitement in
  her voice.
It will hit the stands in 2 days, mother. I'll come and give a few copies
to you, even before that, I told her.

En-route to my house from office, I visited Rahman's house with 5 copies of
India Today, and gave it to them. The images of the proud mother and sister,
smiling and sharing their happiness on seeing Rahman's photo in the
magazine, still remains fresh in my memories. But, Rahman took this big news
in a calm and composed manner. With a smile, he thanked me. His humbleness
was there with him right from that time.

After the release of Roja, there was no magazine which didnt feature
Rahman's photo. After that, I met him a few more times as a reporter. Much
to the envy of other reporters, he would approach me personally and talk to
me like a friend. Once, in a press meet, he openly said He's the first
person to interview me How can I not be close to him?. He hasn't yet
  lost that closeness to me.

8 years later, I'd moved from the press and started working for TV and
movies. I wanted to produce a special program for Sun TV for Tamil New Years
day, in association with my friend Balakrishnan. That program was - Special
  interview with Isai Puyal A.R.Rahman.

Rahman had started rocking both the Hindi and Tamil film industry by then,
  and was very busy! It

sorry buddy, I very much doubt that the movie actually got dubbed into
Hindi or was ever released.

There is no point going all way spending time, money and efforts to get
a movie dubbed into another language and then NOT release it in cinema
halls.

There is no VCD image available on the site. May be they cooked up a
database on the basis of some rumor or incorrect information.

This group is the biggest get together of most authentic, sincere,
die-hard fans of ARR, and it is hard to believe that none of knew in
last 15 years that chor chor film was released.

thanks.

Might be a case of Love you Hamesha (Unreleased film, yet OST released.)

Going by the Audio track listing, I got 2 questions:

 1) Can we expect the CD to go out by Next week , given the fact that previous
ARR releases have the listings come a day or week prior to release? Maybe
 this coming Monday?

 2) Weird to see Javed Ali in place of S.P Balasubramaniam for Baleilakka. Why
 not SPB?

guyz, when you import songs from cd to itunes which settings should we use for
maximum sound quality. While I understand the thumb rule the larger the file
size, better is the sound quality , i tried using both itune plus(256 kbps) and
apple lossless encoder but couldn't see any apparent difference. Ironically,
itune plus sounded better and i tested with very good headphones.

Sorry for posting in this group.

Thanks

This doesn't pertain to ARR but I presume that many would find it of interest.

There's a new documentary titled Home that has just been released. It's about
the ecological consequences of mankind plundering earths natural resources. It
features fabulous aerial photography (by Yann Arthus Bertrand) and an excellent
score by Armand Amar. Check the wiki page here.
Until June 14th you can watch it for free on HD in Youtube at this
link-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqxENMKaeCUfeature=related

Just set aside 90 minutes of your time and watch it!

Armand Amar is a fave of mine and I'll say that the score for Home is one of
his top works. Itunes has the score for $4
