[arr] Roja : how can we love and live apart ? | A Review

2009-06-27 Thread Sreekrishnan R
http://www.letstalkaboutbollywood.com/article-33146764.html

Roja is an excellent little movie made by Mani Ratnam back in 1992, starring
Arvind Swami and Madhoo (Raghunath); it was a real pleasure to watch another of
Mani Ratnam’s works. His intelligence, his realism, his careful balance of
private and public issues which are typical of his works, all this provides a
cinematographic pleasure that makes you feel clever and informed.

This is the story: After an opening scene where soldiers, in the misty
half-light of a mountainous forest, encircle and catch a man whom we later come
to recognize as a separatist terrorist, the scene changes to the Indian
countryside, full of splendour and worthy of Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s views in
his film “Home”. We then follow the arrival of an educated young man, Rishi
Kumar, who comes (no less than as a local hero - very funny and touching scenes
of welcome) to visit a family where he hopes to find a wife. He wishes to marry
a “village belle”, he says, even though he’s always lived in the city. But when
he arrives in front of her, she has a secret: she cannot marry him, could he
please choose another girl? Upon arriving in the village, Rishi had been
spotted by the younger sister, Roja.

The spectator has already noticed her, this fiery, brown-eyed beauty, during
the bucolic opening. And while the young man was coming, she had spied on him,
they had exchanged looks (those knowing looks that lovers the world over
recognize immediately, but know as much how to reject because of social
realities). But when Rishi’s decision has to be made public, when they all ask
him whether he’s made up his mind, he points to Roja: “she’s the one I want”.
Of course this is a minor scandal, and for Roja most of all, but she doesn’t
have the choice, and must marry the nice-looking stranger. During the wedding
ceremonies and the song Rukmani rukmani which captures its joy and expresses
its social meaning, Mani Ratnam uses a remarkable background: a rushing
floodlit waterfall, symbol of the impetuousness of love perhaps, and makes old
women dance with the young, in a vibrant celebration of life. But Roja leaves
her home without her sister having
explained the quandary she put her in. This is nevertheless only momentary,
and the valiant little sister will soon have her heart filled beyond her dreams.

Then drama occurs; this newly found treasure of a hubbie is kidnapped, and
taken into hiding; the horrid battle of fighting, waiting, hoping, doubting,
despairing takes place, all too familiar in our modern world. Those who know
Mani Ratnam know he’s capable of great and efficient suspense there. But I
won’t tell you how the film’s story continues, only that it’s packed with
action and feeling, against a backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty.

That is what the film will be, in fact, a magnificent celebration of beauty,
life and love, in the best Bollywoodian tradition, the one that doesn’t base
itself on the star-system. Of course it’s Mani Ratnam, so there’s the political
purpose (see below), but first the film is simply a classic and perfect
Bollywood production, with all the necessary and well-balanced, well seasoned
ingredients: we have the intense love affair, the danger-filled and malevolent
obstacles to love, the charming and witty humour, which comes from the
situations themselves, and do not require a comedian’s antiques; the superb
songs (AR Rahman, needless to say), which emerge from the intensity of the
action, or the passion; and there are all the great emotions: generosity,
hatred, courage, determination, indignation, resistance, pity, silent love, and
the magical climax where the two lovers reunite and tears gush out.

Madhoo/Roja is the soul of the movie: her willpower, fuelled by a love which
never fails, her faith that Rishi Kumar, her adored husband, is alive in spite
of all odds: these feelings are so poignantly presented that it works, we
forget the little inconsistencies and the exaggerated story elements. She
appears to have forgotten herself, and becomes the fighting wife, the
astoundingly daring lover, whose youth serves as experience and aplomb. Her
self-confidence is such that she wins not only hearts but minds. And she sweeps
aside, not only all resistance, but all disbelief that we are watching a movie.
We are absorbed in the anguish of her quest, in the fearlessness of her
pursuit, and we fear with her, we hope with her, we cry with her. Such is the
strength of acting!

Arvind Swami’s character and personality touches also, because of his restraint
and solidity. He doesn’t emote a lot, perhaps, but I found I liked his acting,
which is at times almost expressionless: this lack of intensity struck me in
fact as a kind of strength, and the sign of a maturity which complements Roja’s
youthful and domineering character. Reviews on Imdb have noted the patriotism
of the scene where beaten and humiliated, Rishi

A.R. Rahman issues statement on Michael Jackson's death.
25th June, 2009

I am shocked at the untimely passing away of Michael Jackson, one of the
greatest musicians of our time.
MJ, for most of our generation was an icon who made uncompromising music. He
pushed the milestone of Pop music to unbelievable levels through the 80s and
90s. I am yet to find an artist with that energy, perfection and vision.
I met him personally after the Oscars in Los Angeles and we vibed very well.
He said that he loved India and the Indian people. He said he heard good
things about me and he was praising the chord progression of Jai Ho's
chorus. He was bursting with energy and told me that every dance move he
did, came from his soul and did a five second stunning example. It was like a
lightning strike :)
He was concerned about developmental issues such as Global Warming and about
wars and its damages to the human community. He asked me to compose a unity
anthem on the likes of We are the World for him. I nodded in awe ...!
He introduced me to his three lovely bright kids. The kids told him I love
you dad and he replied “I love you more” as a proud father.
I wished him well for his concerts and he said “God Bless you”.
After hearing the shocking news I wished it was another rumor which would
fade away soon. It took me time to believe that he is no more.
I remember, my late sound engineer Sridhar had brought me a video of the
premiere of Remember the Time when I was recording Kadal Rojave for my
first movie Roja. Seeing it inspired all of us that afternoon.
Now, there is no Sridhar and no Jackson anymore. I hope all of us value
people's existence more and respect them when they are alive.
LIFE IS SHORT...! Artists and their art live for ever. Jai Ho, MJ !
We love you for your music, regardless of all the controversies!

[arr] Revisiting Kandukondein Kandukondein - Once in a Lifetime Score- Album

2009-06-27 Thread arr_arvind
Rajeev Menon - A R Rahman - Kalaipuli S Dhanu -Vairamuthu -  Mammotty - Ajith -
Aishwarya Rai - Tabu - K J Yesudas - Chitra - Sadhana Sargam -Hariharan -
Shankar Mahadevan etc etc.phew

The above mentioned names are certainly Bell Ringing..!! Easily
one of the best team, a movie could boast of...!!  Kandukondein Kandukondein
(KK) made big headlines both pre release and post release mainly because of its
team and also the subject. It was well received all over country by including
the subtitles of dialogues for the northern audiences..!!
Set in the rural backdrop in its first half and later transition to the
city, KK makes a decent attempt in showing the journey of a family led by all
females..!! Tabu and Aishwarya Rai both look extreemly beautiful and naive even
though they dont belong to this part of the world..!! What to say about
ARR..??? Its his forte'...he has just jumped into this sea and swam to become
an ultimate winner..!!!

Yenna Solla Poghirai --- Shankar Mahadevan

A song which is adored in equal proportions by the mass and the
class..!!! This song doesnt need anyone to listen infinite times to like
it...just one hear is enough and you will be immersed in this sea of joy.! A
Spot ON selection of singer: Shankar ji..!! His high pitch rendition pours in
so much of pleasure to the ears.!! A perfect location : Egypt with pyramid
backdrop..! Tabu and Ajith emote very well. The composition by ARR and lyrics
are above par excellence..!!

Smiyai Yaay --- Devan , Dominique Cerejo

Another song picturised on Ajith and Tabu...this time
along with Pooja Batra. A very peppy song suited perfectly to Devan. But
unfortunately, didnt go too well with the listeners. Dominque Cerejo makes a
very minute humming here and there. But i like this song personally, its a nice
fast paced track.!! The interludes music is so very nice.

Kandukonden Kandukonden -- Hariharan, Mahalaxmi Iyer

The two husky voiced singers unite here to create a
magic and take the extra ordinary composition to one more step further.
Mahalaxmi tries with many of her dynamics in rendering the two
words.Kandukonden Kandukonden..!!! The compostion is highly stupendous and
haunting! A perfect lovey dovey song by ARR..

Suttum Vizhi Choodarthaan -- Hariharan

Many poeple, who were firm minded that rejuvenation of the
greatest old poetries are a taboo, turned topsy-turvy when ARR came up with
this short piece of the greatest saint poet Thiruvalluvar's poetry!! ARR
silenced all the critics and nobody raised any sorts of questions when his
version came out soo mindblowingly from the voice of Hariharan. Only his voice
and the tune formation will take the biggest credits from this song.!  A
masterpiece adaptation by ARR...!!!

 Konjum Mainakkale --- Sadhana Sargam

A typical heroine introduction song, any heroine can dream
of..!! Aishwarya is double lucky to have got such songs in her career.(Also
Barso Re Megha..later in Guru!!) . Sadhana Sargam comes out with flying colors
with her flawless tamil dictions and great rendition. Mindblowing picturisation
and awesome cinematography makes this song double sweet. Rahman just so
casually belts out this melody..!!

Engae Enadhu Kavithai --- Chitra  , Srinivas

Yet another patho melody by the maestro..!! Chitra belts out
this number oozing out her emotions of a broken love affair. Srinivas forms an
integral part of the chorus. Hats off to Rahman and Chitra together for making
this song soo very beautiful even though it has strong shades of tragedy . Only
Chitra could have done full justice to this song. Her second stanza(charanam)
is soo mesmerising when she goes an all time high in kekkudh...

Kannamoochhi Enada -- Chitra (Solo) / K J Yesudas , Chitra (Duet)

This is my personal pick of the album.! One of the most
memorable song in this lifetime.! This song gets the best of the best treatment
in all the areas..!! While Chitra's solo version is like a honey treat to the
listeners, the duet version with Yesudas is like enjoying music at its best..!!
Based on a carnatic raaga, the tune makes a lullaby for your sleep too..!! Both
Chitra and Yesudas, being the thespians in filmi classicals, enthrall
effortlessly..!!

The BGM's of this movie also need a special mention, because it blends the
classical and pop style in a very efficient way. Particularly, the Nithyashree
Mahadevan's swara recitals in the scene where Aishwarya goes for classical
trainings..!!!

In all...KK music album is musicians and music lover's delight and
pride!!! ARR should have bestowed upon all the available awards for this
album alone...  :)

Easily one of the best team, a movie could boast of...!!  Kandukondein
Kandukondein (KK) made big headlines both pre release and post release mainly
because of its team and also the subject. It was well received all over
country by including the subtitles of dialogues for the northern
 audiences..!!
Set in the rural backdrop in its first half and later transition to
the city, KK makes a decent attempt in showing the journey of a family led by
all females..!! Tabu and Aishwarya Rai both look extreemly beautiful and
naive even though they dont belong to this part of the world..!! What to say
about ARR..??? Its his forte'...he has just jumped into this sea and swam to
 become an ultimate winner..!!!

Yenna Solla Poghirai --- Shankar Mahadevan

A song which is adored in equal proportions by the mass and
the class..!!!

But i like this song personally, its a
nice fast paced track.!! The interludes music is so very nice.

Kandukonden Kandukonden -- Hariharan, Mahalaxmi Iyer

The two husky voiced singers unite here to create a
magic and take the extra ordinary composition to one more step further.
Mahalaxmi tries with many of her dynamics in rendering the two
words.Kandukonden Kandukonden..!!! The compostion is highly stupendous and
haunting! A perfect lovey dovey song by ARR..

 Suttum Vizhi Choodarthaan -- Hariharan

Many poeple, who were firm minded that rejuvenation of
the greatest old poetries are a taboo, turned topsy-turvy when ARR came up
with this short piece of the greatest saint poet Thiruvalluvar's poetry!! ARR
silenced all the critics and nobody raised any sorts of questions when his
version came out soo mindblowingly from the voice of Hariharan. Only his
voice and the tune formation will take the biggest credits from this song.!
 A masterpiece adaptation by ARR...!!!

  Konjum Mainakkale --- Sadhana Sargam

A typical heroine introduction song, any heroine can dream
of..!! Aishwarya is double lucky to have got such songs in her career.(Also
Barso Re Megha..later in Guru!!) . Sadhana Sargam comes out with flying
colors with her flawless tamil dictions and great rendition. Mindblowing
picturisation and awesome cinematography makes this song double sweet. Rahman
just so casually belts out this melody..!!

Engae Enadhu Kavithai --- Chitra  , Srinivas

Yet another patho melody by the maestro..!! Chitra belts out
this number oozing out her emotions of a broken love affair. Srinivas forms
an integral part of the chorus. Hats off to Rahman and Chitra together for
making this song soo very beautiful even though it has strong shades of
tragedy . Only Chitra could have done full justice to this song. Her second
stanza(charanam) is soo mesmerising when she goes an all time high in
 kekkudh...

 Kannamoochhi Enada -- Chitra (Solo) / K J Yesudas , Chitra (Duet)

This is my personal pick of the album.! One of the most
memorable song in this lifetime.! This song gets the best of the best
treatment in all the areas..!! While Chitra's solo version is like a honey
treat to the listeners, the duet version with Yesudas is like enjoying music
at its best..!! Based on a carnatic raaga, the tune makes a lullaby for your
sleep too..!! Both Chitra and Yesudas, being the thespians in filmi
 classicals, enthrall effortlessly..!!

The BGM's of this movie also need a special mention, because it blends the
classical and pop style in a very efficient way. Particularly, the
Nithyashree Mahadevan's swara recitals in the scene where Aishwarya goes for
 classical trainings..!!!

I think there's been too much of debate on ARR's album which were released in
2008. Whether it's SdM, or Ghajini or JTYJN, a lot of remarks (mainly
criticisms) have been passed on these albums.

But what I find strange is that amidst all these criticisms, many have failed
to note the magical compositions that ARR gave in Jodha Akbar. Though ARR won
most of the awards of 2008 for JA, nevertheless I find that many seem to be
more keen in passing judgments on the other albums and hardly have I heard
praises showered upon the beautiful numbers in JA.

Jodha Akbar, according to me, will definitely be placed as one of the finest
compositions of ARR. From the haunting Manmohana, the mesmerizing Jashn-E
Bahara, to the exquisite In Lamhon Ka Daaman Me, the soulful Khwaja Mere Khwaja
and the gripping Azeem O Shaan, each and every song of JA is just too stunning
and special in their own way.

I can just go on and on about these songs...but I guess some find that it's
more intriguing to dismiss a person's work as Not-So-Worldclass than to laud
on the person's excellent work of art :(

There were days when we used to wait for more than 6-12 months for an ARR
album.. When he delivered so many last year, ppl want him to work in that
manner.. Hez NOT a MACHINE guys!!

The speciality of ARR is that, the more time, he takes, the BEST comes out!!!

I dont want him to come out with more Ghajinis and Jaane Tu..s .. Instead I
can wait for LONG to get WORLDCLASS soundtracks of ARR STANDARDS, like ROJA,
THIRUDA THIRUDA, BOMBAY, JEANS, ADA and DELHI 6!!!

So, when ARR takes more time...It means, we are waiting for something very
EXTRAORDINARY! !

[arr] Mrs. Bharat Bala remembers King of Pop , ’E kam Satyam’

2009-06-27 Thread Sreekrishnan R
Many years ago, Michael Jackson had collaborated with A R Rahman
[Images] in a song called Ekam Satyam. The album was produced by Bharat
Bala and his wife Kanika Myer.

Kanika goes back in time and recounts her memories of meeting with the pop icon:

Michael
heard A R Rahman's Vande Mataram -- which we had produced -- and wanted
to work with Rahman and us. He was good friends with S P Hinduja,
Chairman of The Hinduja Group, and got in touch with us through him.

He
wanted to dance on an Indian song. So we recorded the song Ekam Satyam
and took it to to him. I met him for the first time in Paris. It was a
great honour to meet and produce a song for him. He was very humble and
creative.

When he heard the song, he was very thrilled. In fact,
when he put on the headphones to listen to the song, he started tapping
his feet and tapping his band on his thigh in rhythm with the beats. He
was enjoying himself. It was nice to see the way he heard the song.

He wanted us to take this song to Munich where a fundraiser concert was
organised for the Red Cross by Nelson Mandela in 1999. Michael Jackson
asked us to bring Indian dancers for the concert. So we took Indian
dancers, as well as Prabhu Deva and Shobhana.

Before the concert, we met again to get his costume measurements. We wanted him
to wear Indian costumes and he readily agreed.

On
the day of the concert, I wanted to take a video of him backstage. He
was very cool and not nervous at all. He was very passionate about what
he was doing. He loved music so much.

One interesting thing
about Michael Jackson was that he was vegetarian, and loved Indian
food. He took an Indian chef to Munich. He loved Indian culture, Indian
food and the song and dance in our films.

I love his songs but
my favourite is so You are not alone, They don't care about us, Heal
the world, Childhood, Thriller and Man in the Mirror.

I miss him a lot. I cannot forget my first meeting with him till date.

for making this song soo very beautiful even though it has strong shades of

The BGM's of this movie also need a special mention, because it blends
the classical and pop style in a very efficient way. Particularly, the
 Nithyashree
Mahadevan's swara recitals in the scene where Aishwarya goes for classical
 trainings..!!!

In all...KK music album is musicians and music lover's delight and
pride...!!! ARR should have bestowed upon all the available awards for this
 album alone... :)

The untimely demise of Michael Jackson has left a deep void in the global
music scene. Indeed, Michael Jackson was the ‘King of Pop’, who ruled the
music industry for decades with his foot-tapping numbers and astonishing
dance moves. Remembering the legend of pop, Indian music prodigy AR Rahman
extolled Michael Jackson and described him, “one of the greatest musicians
of our time.”

For Rahman, Jackson was an exceptionally gifted musician who catapulted pop
music to unbelievable heights during 80s and 90s.

Remembering his recent meet with Michael Jackson post the Oscar ceremony in
Los Angeles, Rahman said that Jackson “Loved India and the people of the
country. He told me that he heard good things about me and he was praising
the chord progression of ‘Jai Ho’s’ chorus.”

For Rahman, Jackson was a rare musical prodigy who was the reservoir of
talent. “He told me that every dance move he did, came from his soul,” said
Rahman. Recalling Jacko’s dancing abilities, Rahman said that he was
mesmerized by Jacko’s five second-demo as “It was a stunning example…like a
lightning striking.”

Indeed, Jackson was an enlightened person who was concerned about greater
issues such as war and global warming. “He asked me to compose a unity
anthem on the lines of ‘We are the World’ for him. I nodded in awe,” said
Rahman.

In Los Angeles, Jackson introduced Rahman to his kids and when the latter
wished him luck for his upcoming concerts, Jackson politely said, “God bless
you.”

Expressing disbelief on Jackson’s sudden death, Rahman said, “It took me
time to believe that he is no more.”

Recollecting how his crew drew inspiration from the star performer, Rahman
maintained, “I remember, my late sound engineer Sridhar brought me a video
of the premiere of ‘Remember the Time,’ when I was recording ‘Kadal Rojave’
for my first film ‘Roja’. We were all so inspired that afternoon. Now, there
is no Sridhar and no Jackson anymore. I hope all of us value people’s
existence more and respect them when they are alive. Life is short. Artists
and their art live forever. Jai Ho, MJ! We love you for your music,
regardless of all the controversies.”

Re: [arr] Re: Isai Aruvi Tamil Music Awards

2009-06-27 Thread Aravind AM

Isai Aruvi awards is such a poorly organised event, as I remember from the
previous year's show... It lacked professionalism totally...
Even last year, the nominees list was so badly messsed up (Hariharan and
Haricharans names interchanged many times, names of fils totally wrong etc),
which I mentioned in my mail to the organisers, but got no response and no
corrections... Even the way the show was conducted was so pathetic, that I feel
it is one event I will not look forward to, despite the list of celebs
attending it!

A.R. Rahman issues statement on Michael Jackson's death.
 25th June, 2009

I am shocked at the untimely passing away of Michael Jackson, one of the
 greatest musicians of our time.
MJ, for most of our generation was an icon who made uncompromising music.
He pushed the milestone of Pop music to unbelievable levels through the 80s
and 90s. I am yet to find an artist with that energy, perfection and vision.
I met him personally after the Oscars in Los Angeles and we vibed very
well. He said that he loved India and the Indian people. He said he heard
good things about me and he was praising the chord progression of Jai Ho's
chorus. He was bursting with energy and told me that every dance move he
did, came from his soul and did a five second stunning example. It was like a
 lightning strike :)
He was concerned about developmental issues such as Global Warming and
about wars and its damages to the human community. He asked me to compose a
unity anthem on the likes of We are the World for him. I nodded in awe
 ...!
He introduced me to his three lovely bright kids. The kids told him I
love you dad and he replied “I love you more” as a proud father.

Thanks Vithur for sharing. I was just listening to the song Heal the World
by MJ and it brought tears to my eyes. Such a beautiful composition that I
hope ARR has heard, because it's the type of song that ARR himself would
compose with such touching lyrics about humanity and helping the world.
Recommend you all listen to this song.
