[arr] Happy Birthday Rahman - Indiaglitz Special

2010-01-06 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
It has 2 articles...read on..

http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/53283.html

The common man admires him. So is the Prime Minister
of the country. Every aspiring filmmaker eagerly looks forward to work
with him. So are the veterans of the industry. He is A R Rahman, the
pride of India, who is celebrating his birthday today.
His journey that started with jingles, bloomed in
‘Roja’, and has now touched millions and millions of hearts courtesy
‘Slumdog Millionaire’. He is the first Indian musician to win the
Oscars. But this has not stopped him. For the musician is now looking
forward for the Grammys.
This is his first birthday after the Oscar triumph.
But he is celebrating the day like he always does – quietly. Sources
close to him say the Mozart of Madras is busy preparing for the
Australian concert, slated for January 16 in Sydney.
It was in this day a few years ago Rahman started
the KM Music Conservatory, one of the long cherished dreams of him. For
him, the instititution is “an attempt to recreate a world-class
orchestra for the enjoyment of the people of India.”
“Synthesizers and electronic sounds played a
significant role in the evolution of music in the 80's and 90's. As
this fresh sound captivated listeners, they began to lose appreciation
and interest in live classical compositions,” Rahman said at that time
and added: “If the trend of listening only to synthesizers and
electronic sounds continues, future generations would be deprived of
the joy, that is, live classical music.”
Rahman's role does not end with the school. The
music Messiah is taking with him the message of love wherever he goes.
This aptly reflected on the Oscar stage, where he said “I had to choose
between love and hate. I chose love and I am here.”
And the year ahead is going to be crucial for
Rahman. As he needs to meet the world’s expectation, thanks to his
phenomenal fame after the Oscars. Apart from international projects, he
is having three big releases in his home turf too- ‘Endhiran’, ‘Raavan’
and ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’.
“God has given me one skill and I’m very happy with
it,” says the musician. “We too a lot, Rahman”, says Team IndiaGlitz
and wishes him many more happy returns of the day.

Another article..

http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/53286.html

He just took the musicdom by storm, since the day he
stepped into the industry… Not only Indiawas mesmerised with his unique
rhythms but even overseas audience were taken into his musical magic…
Although South industry had served as his launch pad, today his name
has become a synonym with music.
Today the music maestro-Oscar winning composer enters into another year of his
life.
AR Rahman has filled his career year with
innumerable, memorable, fantastic… (Words are not enough for this
humble legend)… a vast musical treasure for all to hear…. From Roja to
Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman as set inimitable records, being phenomena
in his own way and style.
Leave alone being striking, each of his composition
are different from the other. It is said that Rahman favours to work on
variety. He had stated that he likes working on two styles, say, a
Slumdog Millionaire-type- of-film and a Jodha Akbar-type. These are two
different styles in cinema and both of them need to be there, said
Rahman.
The films which carry his songs speak for him, carry
his unique trademark. Like, ‘Blue’ that had awesome picturesque
fabulous blended with his remarkable notes. Think ‘Taal’, ‘Pukaar’,
‘Lagaan’, ‘Saathiya’, ‘Swades’, ‘Guru’… one can just feel his music
creeping in mind – that’s an aura he creates… Ok leave that aside….
What about the universal Airtel song which has made its way even the
nook and corner of the remote areas? Or say the current hep anthem “Jai
Ho” that made its impact worldwide?
Let the maestro shine more, create yet another set of records… May he go on
with his talents capturing even more fans….
Heartfelt musical wishes to you Rahman, from all of us from IndiaGlitz….
(Goes without saying Jai Ho to you!)

Re: [arr] Rewind '09 - 2009: A milestone year for A R Rahman (Good one..)

 http://www.radioandmusic.com/content/year-ender/rewind-09/rewind-09-2009-a-milestone-year-a-r-rahman

MUMBAI: As the Mozart of Madras turns 44 on Wednesday, Radioandmusic.com
pays tribute to the maestro by tracking his numerous successes of the past
year, a year that A R Rahman is unlikely to forget in a hurry. 2009 was when
he took the world music stage by storm, gathering up accolades and awards in
his fold and taking to the international scene in a big way.

After his Oscar win for Danny Doyle's Slumdog Millionaire in February,
recognitions, awards, Hollywood projects, and collaborations followed - in
the music world, he was the man who had everyone glued to his every note and
every move. Radioandmusic.com tracks the genius musician.

*BAFTA AND GOLDEN GLOBE GETS THE BALL ROLLING*

A R Rahman becomes the first Indian musician to win the Bafta award
(British Academy of Film and Television Arts) for best original score. Resul
Pookutty and his team (Glen Freemantle, Richard Pryke, Tom Sayers, Ian Tapp)
too won Baftas for Best Sound Editing for Slumdog Millionaire. After Bafta,
Rahman eventually goes on to win four prizes at prestigious Golden Globe
awards where he bags the Best Original Music Score award for 'Jai Ho'.

 *THE BIG 'O'*

A month after Rahman wins the Golden Globe award for best music score, he
gets nominated for Best Original Score and Best Song (One each for Jai Ho
and O Saya) for the Oscars. The nomination also brings international
recognition for Veteran lyricist Gulzar, who has penned the lyrics for 'Jai
ho' that was nominated for best original song for the 81st Annual Academy
 Awards.

 *PHILANTHROPHY TOUR KICKSTARTS *

The first concert of the Jai Ho series is held at Corporation Stadium in
Kozhikode, Kerala, on 3 May 2009. Approximately, 50,000 people from all over
the country and overseas attend the event.. This, and subsequent concerts in
Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata concert are not only meant for
entertainment, but also help generate funds for socially underprivileged.

For 2010, Rahman is scheduled to perform in Middle-east, Singapore and
 Australia.

 *DOCTOR A R RAHMAN*

First it was raining awards, now it’s time for degrees and doctorates.
Rahman gets picked for an Honorary Degree by Middlesex University, London in
 July 2009.

*RAHMAN BLOGS ON MJ’S DEATH *

June 25 was a day that sent news media into a tizzy as Michael Jackson
passes away a month short of his comeback multi millionaire 'This is it'
 tour.

Rahman greives his loss on his blog, (excerpts) I am shocked at the
untimely passing away of Michael Jackson, one of the greatest musicians of
our time. MJ, for most of our generation, was an icon who made
uncompromising music. He pushed the milestone of Pop music to unbelievable
levels through the 80s and 90s. I am yet to find an artist with that energy,
 perfection and vision.

I met him personally after the Oscars in Los Angeles and we vibed very
well. He said that he loved India and the Indian people. He said he heard
good things about me and he was praising the chord progression of Jai Ho's
chorus. He was bursting with energy and told me that every dance move he
did, came from his soul and did a five second stunning example. It was like
 a lightning strike.

 *RAHMAN INTRODUCES MJ COURSE*

In November, it was reported that Rahman had introduced a course that gave
music lovers an opportunity to study MJ's music at Rahman's Tamil Nadu based
music school - the KM Music Conservatory. This is believed to be Rahman's
way of honouring the legendary pop icon. Now, news reports also mention that
Rahman is working on new tunes in memory of Jackson that will feature
musicians from all over the world..

 *SIGNS EXCLUSIVE DEAL WITH UNIVERSAL*

After the Oscar win, Rahman signed an exclusive worldwide publishing deal
with Universal Music Publishing Group. According to the deal, large portions
of Rahman's catalog as well as new music rights to the 'Slumdog' music were
 included in the UMPG deal.

David Renzer, chairman and CEO of UMPG said that the fact that he is a
twice over Oscar winner has really elevated his visibility and notoriety
globally. The Rahman deal, Renzer said, “fits the company's strategy as film
and television music are one of the key areas that are focused on.”

 *BOLLYWOOD ON HOLD*

The only scores that Rahman releases in 2009 for Bollywood are Dilli 6 and
Blue. While Dilli 6' 'Masakali' becomes a rage, Anthony DSouza's Blue, which
boasted a high budget and featured the likes of Kylie Minogue, bombs.
Expectations from Blue’s music get phenomenally high after Rahman’s Oscar
win, the music however fails to impress.

*RAHMAN GOES ON A HOLLYWOOD RETREAT*

Rahman records his score for the ensemble romantic comedy, Couples Retreat.

My list will stand like this.

1. Delhi 6

2. AlaiPayuthe / Saathiya
3. Boys
4. Jaane Tu
5. Kandukondaen Kandukondaen
6. RDB
7. Kannathil Muthamittal
8. Swades
9. Lagaan
10. VTV

As I kept making this list, I had the following thoughts.

1. I liked the music in both of Rakyesh OM's films very very much. I did not
watch Delhi 6. But I hope they combine together for the next movie too.

2. I have only 2 of Manirathnam's movies in the list. I doubt if it would be
the same if I had to make a list of the 90's.

3. I personally love commercial music like Boys and Jaane Tu (if u can call
it so) more than the classy stuff (Water, Bose, JA, etc), including those
fun and commercial songs, which supposedly wears down after the initial
high.

4. Most eager for VTV. Jan 12th will be a special day.

5. I had never expected to change my most favourite ARR album from Dil Se.
But I guess, if I had to make a new list, it will have to be Delhi 6,
followed by Dil Se at a close second (and Thiruda Thiruda at 3).

Happy Birthday Dear ARR. Love you much.

Regards,
Mugilan.

Re: [arr] Which all singers ARR introduced

2010-01-06 Thread Rivjot
Srinivas - He sang song in Bombay, Thiruda Thiruda before Minsara Kanavu
Hariharan - was known before Roja because of hit songs in YRF's Lamhe (1991)
Sonu Nigam also sang way too many songs before Jeans.

I think Shankar Mahadevan (Kadhalan and Bombay Background Score) can be added
to the list. Sukhwinder Singh, Richa Sharma, Naresh Iyer, Benny Dayal, Tanvi
Shah, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Vijay Prakash, Murtaza Khan, Qadir Khan, Remo, Anupama
Deshpande, Noell James, Reena Bhardwaj, Sunita Sarathy... I am sure there are
many other singers in the list

2010-01-06 Thread amol kadu
Hi all rahman fans..

God celebrates his birthday today..and let me be the fortunate one to wish him
many happy returns of this day.. with each day of gr8er heights reached in his
musical journey..

I remeber once while discussin greatness of Rahman.. Gulzarji had observed
something which was heitherto unnoticed..he said..that greatnes of rahman lies
in the fact that he completely changed the grammar of Hindi film music..B4
rahman, it was more or less mukhada..antara.antara..mukhada.. He literally
turned it upside down..

Only a genius can fully recognise another genius this well.. whenever i listen
to boss's songs..i feel that though he gets those crazy ideas which seem to be
so natural..maybe there is a method in the madness..As one goes and sees the
patterns appearing in his music, one feels that rahman has a definite thought
process behind that spontaneous overflow of creativity that impresses us all..

In many songs of his, on sees how rahman has delibrately changed the way the
song was traditionally starting or ending in film music..many a times, his
songs start with a music piece which could may well have been utilised as an
interlude by any other composer.. he dares to start his song by that
interlude.. for e.g. Tu hi re form Dil se or Tu muskura from Yuvraaj..or Kaise
mujhe form Gajjini..or the world famous masakalli..from Delhi 6.. all of them
start with pieces or humming which suddenly start the song with a bang..and
toward the end of the song they reappear out of nowhere..and complete the song
in ways it could never have completed by some1 else..This cycle of sounds which
in away represents the flow of music (unlike the mukhda..antara system of
earlier era)..the eternal flow..and in a way comments about rahman's connection
with the divine thread of everlasting, never ending soul of universe.

One of the lesser credited fact about rahman is the way he has used chorus in
his songs..this is another contribution o f his..which has transformed film
music in particular..Many of his catchy starts are completely sung by
chorus..givin it a heady start..may it be kehna hi kya from bombay or jiya jale
from dilse..chinamma from minaxi or recent aaj dil gustakh from blue..he has
given meatier pieces to chrous..and used them in all styles and pitches..There
are very few examples in hindi film music where the lead singer is more or less
absent from the starting mukhada..but one listens to dil ye bechain we..raste
pe nain we..aaja sawariya..aa.. and one cant help but sing praises for rahman
for using only chorus for that part( mind u.. u have alka completing the antara
and rest of the mukhada..and u r taking a huge risk by not introducing her
rigth at the start.but obviously for boss..risk is his middle name.) Even using
complete gibberish to musical
effect to start a song..like in badan dhuan dhuan(meenaxi) or making a
complete chorus song.. like dhakka laga buga..he has tried everything..His
starting of songs like ghanan ghanan and Genda phool have been particularly
special for it usage of chorus at the start and end..

Some his typical starts where he just wants to grab u from the first beat.. he
uses a grabbing instrumental piece..like 'Kabhi kabhi aditi jashne.bahara
Mitwa Radha kasie na jale tanha tanha or yeh tara woh tara Kariye
naa..and sometimes when he has to convey that divne feeling..he simply drops
all ornamentation which grabs u.. a simple harmonium starts kwaja mere
khwaja..cause the emotions overrule the rest there..

well..i can go on and on..but then..the more i think about it.. the more i feel
like speaking..wish u our sincerest appreciation rahman.. u r the reason why in
this world of corruption , nepotism, cruel rapes and red tape.. we still
believe in existence of god..Thank u for Being U.. Enjoy the day..

By making such comments, we make ourselves appear like a frog in a

Sounds bad, na.

anyway. I am sure that ARR will give great music in Steven's films

[arr] PB's High Notes of 2009 - Delhi 6 at Number 3??

2010-01-06 Thread ichord
Music of What's Your Rashee and Dev D better than Delhi 6? Yes, according
to this author in PB. Do I agree? HECK NO! Delhi 6 is by far and ahead
the best album of 2009!! This it not to take away the recognition of good
music of the other 2 soundtracks.

He criticizes D6, saying that besides the 4 biggies, the other songs are short
and situational and that D6 title song and Bandar are disappointing. My
friend, did you forget the rage of Genda Phool? People love that song, even
voting it as the best in some online rankings! As far as I remember, people
loved the D6 title song too.

 Hi all rahman fans..

God celebrates his birthday today..and let me be the fortunate one to wish
him many happy returns of this day.. with each day of gr8er heights reached
 in his musical journey..

I remeber once while discussin greatness of Rahman.. Gulzarji had observed
something which was heitherto unnoticed..he said..that greatnes of rahman
lies in the fact that he completely changed the grammar of Hindi film
music..B4 rahman, it was more or less mukhada..antara.antara..mukhada.. He
 literally turned it upside down..

Only a genius can fully recognise another genius this well.. whenever i
listen to boss's songs..i feel that though he gets those crazy ideas which
seem to be so natural..maybe there is a method in the madness..As one goes
and sees the patterns appearing in his music, one feels that rahman has a
definite thought process behind that spontaneous overflow of creativity that
 impresses us all..

In many songs of his, on sees how rahman has delibrately changed the way the
song was traditionally starting or ending in film music..many a times, his
songs start with a music piece which could may well have been utilised as an
interlude by any other composer.. he dares to start his song by that
interlude.. for e.g. Tu hi re form Dil se or Tu muskura from Yuvraaj..or
Kaise mujhe form Gajjini..or the world famous masakalli..from Delhi 6.. all
of them start with pieces or humming which suddenly start the song with a
bang..and toward the end of the song they reappear out of nowhere..and
complete the song in ways it could never have completed by some1 else..This
cycle of sounds which in away represents the flow of music (unlike the
mukhda..antara system of earlier era)..the eternal flow..and in a way
comments about rahman's connection with the divine thread of everlasting,
 never ending soul of universe.

One of the lesser credited fact about rahman is the way he has used chorus in
his songs..this is another contribution o f his..which has transformed film
music in particular..Many of his catchy starts are completely sung by
chorus..givin it a heady start..may it be kehna hi kya from bombay or jiya
jale from dilse..chinamma from minaxi or recent aaj dil gustakh from blue..he
has given meatier pieces to chrous..and used them in all styles and
pitches..There are very few examples in hindi film music where the lead
singer is more or less absent from the starting mukhada..but one listens to
dil ye bechain we..raste pe nain we..aaja sawariya..aa.. and one cant help
but sing praises for rahman for using only chorus for that part( mind u.. u
have alka completing the antara and rest of the mukhada..and u r taking a
huge risk by not introducing her rigth at the start.but obviously for
boss..risk is his middle name.) Even using complete gibberish to musical
effect to start a song..like in badan dhuan dhuan(meenaxi) or making a
complete chorus song.. like dhakka laga buga..he has tried everything..His
starting of songs like ghanan ghanan and Genda phool have been
particularly special for it usage of chorus at the start and end..

Some his typical starts where he just wants to grab u from the first beat..
he uses a grabbing instrumental piece..like 'Kabhi kabhi aditi
jashne.bahara Mitwa Radha kasie na jale tanha tanha or yeh tara woh
tara Kariye naa..and sometimes when he has to convey that divne
feeling..he simply drops all ornamentation which grabs u.. a simple harmonium
starts kwaja mere khwaja..cause the emotions overrule the rest there..

well..i can go on and on..but then..the more i think about it.. the more i
feel like speaking..wish u our sincerest appreciation rahman.. u r the reason
why in this world of corruption , nepotism, cruel rapes and red tape.. we
still believe in existence of god..Thank u for Being U.. Enjoy the day..

Danny Boyle almost botched it. The Welsh director had bottled the mad razzle of
Mumbai quite brilliantly in Slumdog Millionaire. He just had to cap it well. As
Jamal meets Latika at the Churchgate station in a climax that was inevitably
Mumbai, everything was perfect – the release of tension, atmosphere of
jubilation – except for the sound of joy. “Rahman heard the song that I had put
and said ‘Don’t use this song. I have another song for you. Use it’ and I said
What!!!” Boyle recalled in an interview to a Web site. Actually, it wasn’t even
a song; just a danceable instrumental piece. But he agreed to listen to the
song that Allah Rakha Rahman had in mind. Looking back, Jai Ho is what defines
the climax. Hell, it is the climax.

Critics don’t consider Jai Ho as his best work but they are barking up the tree
and missing the woods. The reality is that Jai Ho is important for a variety of
reasons that make Rahman one of the most influential musicians on the planet.
And most of the reasons are in that song. The song itself can be thought of as
a Rahman glide note that joins three worlds: music of the West, East and
computer technology. The rousing victory song set in A Minor reminds many
people of Mozart’s 40th Symphony but the melodic line of Jai Ho runs closer to
the Austrian Legend’s Piano Sonata 8. One is tempted to think of it as a
subconscious hat-tip from the Mozart of Madras to the Dear Departed.

Image: www.worldlight.in/ T Selvakumar
He has won two Academy Awards for Best Original Music Score and Best Original
Song in Slumdog Millionaire. Nominated for Grammy. Beyond the hat-tip though,
it is Rahman’s interpretation of the euphoric mood of the moment. The song
loops in the enthusiasm of disco, rawness of world music, slick synthesizer
runs and all of these buoy the soaring vocals. Superb sound engineering is the
final touch that creates a song that is as much at home in an Indian music
competition as much as it is in an Oscar ceremony.

The success of Slumdog may have left everyone surprised but it is the result of
a concerted effort. Rahman did the music for a Chinese film Warriors of Heaven
and Earth in 2003. Then, he did the musical Bombay Dreams with Andrew Lloyd
Webber in 2004. He did the score for Lord of the Rings in 2007 and he did
Raga’s Dance for the violinist Vanessa Mae in 2008. In 2009, he did the music
for a Hollywood film Couple’s Retreat.

If this was merely another Indian composer trying to make it in the West it
wouldn’t be a big deal. It is much bigger. Rahman is trying to create sound
that fuses the music of East and West. To do this, he has started his own KM
music conservatory, a school of music as it were. He also has his own label KM
Musiq to produce the sort of music that he thinks should be out there. “I want
to think like an entrepreneur not an employee. Attempts to create a synthesis
of the music of West and the East were made in the past but did not last
because that form wasn’t institutionalised. I want to do that,” says Rahman.
The tea leaves augur well. “Rahman has been trying to do this East-West bridge
for a very long time. Bombay Dreams was the first time he made such an attempt.
If anyone can, he can,” says Atul Churamani, vice president at SaReGaMa.

Rahman was destined to cross boundaries. He was a child prodigy. A Tehelka
article on him talks about one such instance. When Rahman was a kid, his father
took him to a music director called Sudarshan. “I hear your child can play
anything. Let’s see if you can play this,” he said and played a challening
piece. He then covered the harmonium keys with a veshti and gave it to the
child. Rahman played the composition pitch perfect. An overwhelmed Sudarshan
embraced the boy.

Maybe Rahman could have become a great Carnatic musician, maybe a great western
classical virtuoso. A world of possibilities ended when his father passed away
and the family went through some very hard times. He had to record music for a
fee to help feed his family. He played for television shows. He travelled with
different music troupes all over South India. The genius could have remained a
journeyman. A scholarship to Trinity College of Music at Oxford in changed
everything. In 1987, he returned from Oxford and by 1992, he had stunned the
world with the soundtrack of Roja.

Roja would define how music composers all over India change their oeuvre.
That’s because Rahman revolutionised the way music was composed for Indian
films primarily because he understood technology very well.

“Earlier, you could record only two or three tracks, essentially streams of
music. Only the singer’s voice you could record in
