[arr] The most notable omissions from the Oscar 2010 shortlist.
http://www.altfg.com/blog/awards/oscar-2010-its-complicated-julianne-moore-190/ Which movies were totally ignored by the Academy? Which performers and filmmakers were ignored? The list is quite long, of course. Below are the most notable omissions from the Oscar 2010 shortlist. Marc Webb’s (500) Days of Summer, Pedro Almodóvar’sBroken Embraces, Todd Phillips‘ The Hangover, Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story, Duncan Jones‘ Moon, Cary Fukunaga’s Sin Nombre, Sebastian Silva’s The Maid, and Olivier Assayas‘ Summer Hours were totally left out. And so were Richard Linklater’s Me and Orson Welles, Nancy Meyers‘ It’s Complicated, Steven Soderbergh’s The Informant!, John Hillcoat’s The Road, Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are, Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo, Jim Sheridan’s Brothers, Roland Emmerich’s 2012, and Grant Heslov’s The Men Who Stare at Goats. Among the individuals left out wereJulianne Moore (A Single Man), Samantha Morton (The Messenger), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man), Robert Downey Jr (Sherlock Holmes), Marion Cotillard (Nine), Catalina Saavedra (The Maid), Clint Eastwood (Invictus), Michael Haneke (The White Ribbon), Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria), Abbie Cornish and Ben Whishaw (Bright Star), and Diane Kruger and Melanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds). Also, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel ((500) Days of Summer), Sam Rockwell (Moon), Alec Baldwin (It’s Complicated), Saoirse Ronan and Susan Sarandon (The Lovely Bones), Christian McKay (Me and Orson Welles), Nora Ephron (Julie Julia), cinematographer Dion Beebe (Nine), plus A.R. Rahman’s song Na Na (Couples Retreat), Agnes Varda’s documentary The Beaches of Agnes, and Warwick Thornton’s best foreign language film semi-finalist Samson Delilah. It’s always good to remember that all of the above may — and likely did — get a number of votes. Some may even have showed up on a majority of the ballots — but as a result of the preferential voting system their potential nominations went kaput.

Re: [arr] What makes ARR great ? My perspective
Excellent analysis and Writeup Ram !! Kalyan K. On Wed, Feb 3, 2010 at 5:16 AM, Ram Motipally ram.motipa...@gmail.comwrote: Friends, Spurred on by this article, I have put down some of my thoughts on why I think ARR is the great man and musician that he is. This is a thought process which has developed over the last 18 years that I have been listening to his music and following him in the media. A few disclaimers upfront, I have no music background and unlike some people in this group have not met ARR or worked with him etc. So my perspective is purely from the outside. 1) Natural ability: He is a musical genius and this is the first ingredient. This is a god-given gift and there is no other explanation for the same. 2) Intelligence and Emotional intelligence: ARR is a very intelligent man, he comes across as someone very thoughtful and measured. This is then accentuated by his emotional intelligence. Why is this critical ? - ARR composes music primarily for movies, this means his music sense has to combine with a Director's vision of the movie and the two must match. Only then will the music truly capture the essence and emotion of the movie. Even the great Ennio Morricone talks about this as the bedrock of his success. ARR' ability to feel the emotion and convert it to music is exceptional, whatever be the emotion - love, compassion, anger, happiness, etc. 3) Ability and Passion to be world-class: This again comes from his natural intelligence. He Ping (director of warriors of heaven and earth) described ARR's music to this effect - ARR blends western instruments/music with eastern (indian) melody and creates a sound that is unique only to him. To do this in itself is being a world-class thought leader in music. But even more unique is to do it in the early 90s meant ARR was being world-class even before the world knew what it meant. He was defining a new sense of great in music no past definition of greatness. This is belief in one's self. 4) Constant urge and Passion for learning and innovation: ARR never rests with what he knows. He constantly seems to want to do more and better. Infact from the interviews, what I could glean was that Danny Boyle approached him only for a background score on Slumdog millionaire. ARR convinced him to listen to some of the songs for the movie. Danny again tells him no cellos. Which meant he did not want any emotional or melodious songs. Now ARR's strength is this kind of music. But he takes it on as a challenge and gives Danny the edgy/rough kind of score that he wanted at the same time retaining the ARR essence. And then he wins all these awards. Even ARR will say, he did not foresee all this, but his unique ability to push the edge of his ability and comfort zone has brought this glory. Same thing with RDB - the song lukka chuppi was purely ARR's idea and he naughtily admits that he did it to fulfill a long dream to sing with Lataji. But when the music was done and the movie is watched, that song captures the essence of the movie in a way that is very unique. It is very rare to see anyone push the possibilities so consistently and so well. Numerous such examples be found on this topic. 5) Childlike enthusiasm: Hear ARR speak and you can always see a child somewhere. He wants to learn, he wants to do new stuff, he is never content with his achievements. no arrogance for what he has done. Imagine he goes and learns a new instrument like the continuum and then produces amazing music with it. That innocence and constant energy will always give him ideas and open newer frontiers. It is also the same with technology. ARR till date and since he started has always adopted and mastered new technology. That is a sign of learning and growing rather than stagnating. 6) Ability to overcome hardships at a young age: Particularly in one of his interviews with Simi Garewal, ARR talks about the hardships he had to endure while as a kid his family was struggling and they could not afford him to go to school but work and support the family. This itself is stupendous. But, what I find even more impressive is that he is not and has never been bitter about it. He does not have any self-pity. He talks like a child, but there is a very old and wise man inside when he says, thats what I had to do and that is what I did. For people of his genius and intelligence when you add the quality of taking and overcoming hardships at a youn age, that becomes a very potent combination. Everything else in life looks easy. See his interview with simi garewal on youtube if you want to see this aspect of his character. 7) Finally, but most importantly he is a genuine human being: His integrity is beyond question. His concern for well-being of even the smallest of artists who work for him is genuine. His concern for worldly problems like poverty is again very genuine. His love for his mother, sisters and family is very

None of the singers of the original song were invited to participate in the update, which was recorded at the same Hollywood studio once again under the oversight of Quincy Jones and the song's co-writer Lionel Richie. In all, more than 70 stars lent their voices to the song, and they all seemed in awe of each other. As celebrities, we're fans of one another, so we're all looky-looing in there, and getting autographs and numbers, said Natalie Cole. Streisand, Celine Dion and Tony Bennett appeared to inspire the most stares. Fifteen-year-old Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber joked that he would ask his new friend, RB singer Akon, to get the telephone number of Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls. Streisand, a noted perfectionist, ran through multiple takes of the line originally sung by Diana Ross, each one seemingly better than the previous one. Jazz singer Patti Austin came into her recording booth to coach her. Guitar virtuoso Carlos Santana sang along, even though he is not a singer. Two members of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, appeared to ignore each other. 'INSPIRED CHAOS' Classical crossover tenor Josh Groban described the event as inspired chaos. It's great to see so many legendary artists sweating it out. Everybody left their ego at the door, he said, referring to a request made by Jones at the original session in 1985. To be smack-dab in the middle of a sandwich between Barbra Streisand and Weezy (rapper Lil Wayne) was personally a creative experience I don't think I'll ever have the pleasure of having again, Groban added. For his part, Lil Wayne said his mother asked him to get a photo of Gladys Knight. He was among a heavy quotient of hip-hop stars, including Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Drake, LL Cool J, and will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas as well as West. Hip-hop is rock 'n' roll to a lot of people around the world, right now, said Jones, explaining the absence of the modern-day equivalents of original performers Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan or Paul Simon. Lil Wayne, for one, noted that he was not a singer, and thought organizers were joking when they asked him to sing the line originally sung by Dylan. Asked if he did a better job, Lil Wayne said, Hell no! Country and Latino artists were notably under-represented. Organizers said they were turned down for various reasons by some stars. In fact, most of the big Grammy winners from the night before were absent, including Beyonce and Jay-Z, who returned to New York, and Taylor Swift, who flew to Australia straight after the ceremony. Randy Phillips, one of the organizers, said his one regret was the absence of dance-pop star Lady Gaga. The song, which was still being worked on into the small hours of Tuesday, will make its world premiere during NBC's coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympics on February 12. Both the song and an accompanying video, shot by Oscar-winning Crash director Paul Haggis, will go on sale both through traditional and online retailers. Phillips said all proceeds will go to a newly established foundation that will carefully monitor disbursement. The January 12 earthquake killed up to 200,000 people in Haiti and devastated the already impoverished nation. http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKTRE6111GG20100202?sp=true

Gulzar waiting for his GrammyIndiaGlitz [Wednesday, February 03, 2010] India rejoiced when the Grammy awards were won by our music maestro AR Rahman and lyricist Gulzar on Sunday. Whilst Rahman was present for the event to receive his award, Gulzar however was absent for the same. And now the noted lyricist is waiting for the accolade to come along. Calling it a strange situation, Gulzar stated, “Both Rahman and I were accorded our respective Grammy trophies. Unfortunately I wasn't in Los Angeles to collect mine. I don't know where it is. I hope it reaches me.” It is reported that for prestigious awards like Oscars and Grammys, it is against their rule to hand over the awards to the other members of a crew when the actual winner is absent. When I got my Oscar along with Rahman, he wasn't allowed to collect it on my behalf. It was sent to me by courier. I'm hoping that Grammy will reach me the same way, said Gulzar. While Rahman is hailed all over for his achievement and headlines are being specially dedicated to him, Gulzar has no qualms about being overshadowed. He says, Rahman is now the global face of Indian popular music and we must all rejoice in that. The fact that Jai ho got such worldwide popularity has a lot to do with Rahman being the global brand ambassador of our music. http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/54102.html -- - Regards ~ ~ A.R.Rajib ~ ~

What is important is the fact that he has received so much praise. Sound man Resul Pookutty had mentioned: ‘What Zanjeer did for Amitabh, Slumdog has done for us’. Do you agree? Rahman is a genius and awards or no awards, his music is universal. Even before these international accolades came his way, Rahman has been a much sought-after musician. The only difference now is that he has carved a bigger circle for himself. It’s been a jump ahead on another platform. Are more Hollywood films coming your way? Yes, I have composed and sung for Steven Spielberg’s next film. Personally, did you expect more awards for the song? As I said earlier, this song is blessed. It has already bagged most of the top international honours. I believe that it will win 100 plus awards (laughs). Last but not the least, do awards make a difference to you? Awards are fine, but the best award is when your song is played in clubs, auto-rickshaws, on the radio, in people’s cars and is widely demanded for stage performances. For me, my fans are the biggest reward and award. Sukhi comes to Tollywood Roshni Mukherjee Jai ho! Sukhwinder Singh is lending his voice to Tollywood. The singer has recorded his first Bengali number for Rohin Banerjee’s Kolkata — The Metro Life. With increasing interest of listening to Bengali playback, Sukhwinder’s entry is going to be a bonus for Bengali cinema. Incidentally, Rohin had always wanted the singer for the title track. “After all, a singer of his calibre would add a different dimension to the project. I am elated that Sukhwinder agreed,” Rohin said, adding that it was “all thanks to Sharad” that Sukhwinder came on board. “I was discussing about roping in Sukhwinder with Sharad (Kapoor) when he said that the two of them are good friends. Once Sharad approached him with the proposal, Sukhwinder agreed to lend his ear to the Babul Bose’s track and Priyo Chattopadhyay’s lyrics that go like: Agun buker majhe/Agun moner majhe/Agun chitar anche jolchhe lyrics. Sukhwinder loved the song and a meeting later, he was part of the project,” Rohin revealed. When CT got in touch with Sukhwinder, the singer had just completed recording the number. Speaking about his Bengali innings, the singer said, “I’ve been wanting to sing in Bengali for the past few years. Bengali is a rich language. When Sharad approached me for the film and I heard the subject, I agreed. In fact, this is the first time that I am singing in a Bengali film.” Gushing about the song, he said that it is “dashing, energetic, melodious and well-written”. But wasn’t singing in the language difficult for the singer? “I understand Bengali,” came Sukhwinder’s quick reply, adding, “It took me hardly half an hour to sing the song. Honestly, I feel rejuvenated after singing the track. Main khush hoon.” So excited is the singer that he is keen to sing the second number for this film too. Interestingly, Babul Bose and Sukhwinder know each other since the former’s struggling days. “For some time, we had lost touch. Sharad helped us bridge the gap,” Babul said. Fact is when, Rohin had told him that he is trying to get Sukhwinder for a song, Babul had already composed the particular track keeping Sukhwinder in mind. “I told him, ‘Keep the song only if Sukhwinder is singing it. Or else, we will think of something else’,” Babul recalled. Recollecting his recording experience with the singer, the composer said, “Sukhwinder infused so much energy into my composition that I could hardly recognise it after the recording. As far as singing in Bangla is concerned, he wanted to know the meaning of almost every word in the song.” Sukhwinder has sung the remix version of the same song too. Here’s hoping there’s Nasha hi nasha when Sukhwinder sings a Bengali note. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/music/Jai-ho-Will-win-100-awards-Sukhwinder/articleshow/5531821.cms -- - Regards ~ ~ A.R.Rajib ~ ~
