[arr] Voicing thier support: good article on contribuitions by artists towards ending poverty

2010-03-15 Thread manisha madhavan
Voicing their support

THERE are some people in the music industry who will go all out to fight
poverty and hunger. Some singers donate cash, others lend their voices towards
charitable causes while a few take time off from their hectic schedules to
visit the underprivileged.
Humanitarian: In this 2003 file picture, Irish rock star Bob Geldof is looking
upon a malnourished two-year-old boy living with AIDS in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Geldof, 58, has been raising funds for famine relief in Africa for over 25
years.

Feed the world
Punk rocker-turned-political activist and philanthropist Bob Geldof, 58, has
been raising funds for famine relief in Africa for over 25 years by
co-founding Band Aid in 1984; Live Aid in 1985 and Band Aid II in 1989, Band
Aid 20 in 2004. He worked closely with then-British prime minister Tony Blair
and helped organise the Commission for Africa to study problems faced by the
country. In 2005, he organised Live 8 to increase awareness of world poverty
and urge world leaders to create solutions for helping the poorest countries.

Charity hero
Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan, 55, is a Unicef and Unaids Goodwill
Ambassador. He is founder of Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation, which helps
young people in a variety of worthy causes, including the provision of medical
services and aid to victims of natural disasters and Dragon’s Heart
Foundation, which strives to meet the needs of poverty-stricken children and
the elderly in the hardest-to-reach areas of China. Magnanimous Chan also
helped to rebuild a village after the devastating tsunami hit Banda Acheh in
2004. Although its official name is Friendship Village of Indonesia-China, most
people there refer to it as the “Jackie Chan village”.

Sustainble living
In 1997, singer Jewel established Project Clean Water, a foundation to provide
clean water on a global scale. Jewel co-launched Higher Ground For Humanity to
improve education and promote sustainable development in South America,
Central America, India, and Africa. Jewel, 35, is a spokesperson for Mary Kay
Ash Charitable Foundation, which works to eradicate cancers affecting women.

Music therapy
Grammy winner composer A.R. Rahman was appointed the global ambassador for the
anti-tuberculosis drive Stop TB Partnership, by the World Health Organisation
in 2004. In 2006, he composed the music for the short film The Banyan, in aid
of destitute women in Chennai, India. He has shown support for charities
including India’s Save The Children and worked with Cat Stevens for his song
Indian Ocean, with proceeds going to orphans in tsunami-hit Banda Aceh. In 2008,
he opened the KM Music Conservatory college in Chennai to train aspiring
musicians in vocals, instruments, music technology and sound design.

Legendary John
After reading American economist Jeffrey Sachs’ The End of Poverty, Grammy
award-winning singer John Legend, 31, was inspired to lend his support to the
disadvantaged. Legend travelled to Ghana, Africa and launched the Show
Mecampaign which provides mosquito nets, free meals to children attending
school, safe water points, local clinics and fertiliser. Legend also raises
awareness and support for GQ magazine’s charity drive, The Gentlemen’s Fund. –

[arr] Avatar singer Lisbeth Scott share few words about AR Rahman in Interview

2010-03-15 Thread manisha madhavan
Avatar singer lends voice to Lahore
IBNS  | Monday, 15 March , 2010, 12:36

Singer Lisbeth Scott – who has lent her voice to several blockbuster Hollywood
films likeAvatar, King Kong, Chronicles of Narnia and Shrek - has sung the
opening alaap in the Warner Brothers-Sai Om Films' forthcoming film Lahore. She
talks about the experience, the film and why, when it comes to Bollywood,
Lagaan remains her favourite movie. Excerpts:

What made you decide to sing for a Hindi movie?
The composer, Wayne Sharpe, liked my work in several films he had seen, and he
contacted me about singing on his score for Lahore. When I heard about the film
and its compelling subject matter, I knew I would love to sing in it.

How was the experience?
It was a wonderful and intense experience working with Wayne on his beautiful
score for Lahore. It was cold in New York when I arrived and I was working on
another project in the city during my visit as well. We had all been working
long hours and were a bit bleary eyed.
When Wayne and I first got together, he decided to start by giving me an idea
of the film and showed me the first fight scene. I was mesmerised and realised
what an important and special film this was. We worked steadily after that for
several days and had a very easy and organic creative interaction. I am very
excited to see and hear the final results!

Did you have to sing any Indian melody or raga?
I have sung in Hindi before and I have used Indian-based styles for the film
and not the raga.

Is what you have sung quite similar to what you have done in Hollywood
projects- since it is part of the background score.
It is quite interesting and it is not exactly the background score because
sometimes there is voice, too. But yes, it’s not a song situation for the cast.
It’s the opening soundtrack of the film.

If given a chance to work with an Indian singer, whom would you prefer?
Personally, I would choose AR Rahman who did the score for Slumdog Millionaire.
I love Indian sound and I have always been drawn to classical music.

When you were singing for Lahore, was there something new you did which you
haven’t done before in Hollywood projects?
The nice thing about Wayne Sharpe’s score is that he manages to blend the
styles and sounds differently and he also has sense of world music. I used my
voice differently as there was an Indian flavour to it and the wonderful part
of this movie is that it has a universal message about cultural borders and
healing conflicts.

Did you find any similarities between your singing in Avatar and Lahore?
Yes there were similarities in the approaches. There were several scenes in
Avatar which I watched and listened to the music, which was written by the
composer, and created certain melodies. I did something similar with Wayne
Sharpe, too. He allowed me to create my own melody and give my response.

Have you watched any Indian films to understand the genre of music?
My favourite movie is Lagaan. That was the first Hindi movie I saw. For me,
musically, it was a dream come true. The music that was played was fantastic
and an eye opening experience. The film had intense passion that made me love
Bollywood movies.

What attracted you to Indian music?
The first time I got interested in the Indian music was when I was a child.
When I was 12 year old, I had a jazz music teacher and he was an Indian. One
day he played Pt. Ravi Shankar’s signature music and I remember I was so
fascinated and speechless as the music was fantastic. After that I had this
immense love for Indian music.

As you are big fan of AR Rahman? What do you like about his music?
When I heard his music in Slumdog Millionaire, I was completely blown away
[laughs]. One thing that I love about his music is that he sings a song and
creates a melody in such a way that it takes the listener through a harmonious
journey and it opens your heart. He creates a world of his own that is very
powerful thing for an artist and he is a master of that.

What inspires you to work in Hollywood instead of creating your own album?
I have already done lot of work as a solo artist and I do have nine albums of
my own. When I came first to Hollywood, one of my friends heard me singing and
that friend knew a film composer and he asked me to sing for a Hollywood movie.
That is how I entered Hollywood.
I love being a part of musical world. I think that passion for your work makes
you successful and I love whatever I do. I love the intensity of expression,
languages and I just love singing and listening to music. I love to take all
the challenges that I come across.

I believe that AR would have missed mentioning Vishal's name. If you notice, AR
has always been nervous/shy on a stage, particularly when he has to speak a few
words collecting awards and stuff :-). I would give the benefit of doubt on AR
missing out Vishal's name. Needless to say, both have immense talent. May they
keep making great music as ever and fill our hearts with everlasting melodies.

Dear Brother,

 - I am not agreeing with u.

 - I don't feel he is a good composer because his songs
lacks good orchestration.

  Hey guys,
I know this email isn’t about A.R.Rahman, but since all of us are open to great
music, I thought I would email this. A.R.Rahman is great, and I am one amongst
his biggest fans. Having said that, we should not just limit ourselves to just
his music.

There is this malayalee composer by the name of M. Jayachandran who is making
some great music. Let me share with you one of his awesome programming and
melodious songs. Please click the link below and listen.

If the link doesn’t open, do search for the Malayalam movie, Uthara
Swayamvaram, song is called Mallike Mallike.

I would appreciate any feedback on this song.

[arr] Review of VTV Lyrics (Average). What's your opinion ???

2010-03-15 Thread jayram m.n
I admire and enjoy some of the good songs written by Thamarai. She has given
some memorable pieces like "Suttum Velli Sudarey" from Ghagni, "Kangal irandal"
from Subramanyapuram and so many others. The list is pretty long.

But  my overall impression is that the lyrics in VTV was kind of average lyrics
(or below average).

(1) Hosanna  and Ommna Penne - Both these songs can be remembered without any
lyrics, because of the catchy tune, main tag-word selected for the songs.
(2) Vinnaithaandi varuvaya and Manipaaya - Better lyrics with good flow of
words in both these songs. Definitely promising.
(3) Anbil Avan : Okay lyrics (most of the lyrics consists of rehashed marriage
oaths which is a cool idea).
(4) Kannukul Kannai : Sounds more like a dialogue rather than a poem.
(4) Since I don't understand Malayalam, I cannot say much about Aromale lyrics.
But from the translation that appeared in this forum, the lyrics sounds quite
impressive and imaginative.

She has definitely struggled to write the songs for VTV. Perhaps she needs to
work more with ARR Sir to understand his style of composition and tunes to give
much better lyrics.

Sorry for being little bit harsh with my review, but I expect more memorable
lyrics Thamarai (especially with ARR Sir).

And along the same lines, the album should be downloadable for a price,
rather than spending energy, electricity and other resources in releasing
CDs. Reduce the acrbon footprint and set a trend. As always :)

Curious to know your ranking of the following recent albums by ARR at this
point in time. I'm aware that preferences fluctuate in the course of time:

VTV
Delhi 6
Blue
Ada
Yuvvraaj
Jodha Akbar
Jaane Tu
Ghajini
Slumdog
Couple's Retreat

This it tougher that I thought it would be, but here's mine:

1) Delhi 6
2) VTV
3) Couple's Retreat
4) Jodha Akbar
5) Yuvvraaj
6) Ada
7) Jaane Tu
8) Slumdog
9) Blue
10)Ghajini

Ranking relative to one another only... I love all of them like anything!

Folks
As always : Original is king..
Remember Daudd!
And i missed my food distribution with Vithur sir today because of this...sorry
vithur sir..:(
This film – Daud was lousy but with a super chic sound track. The Background
score and the soundtrack both top notch. Sounds that no one had heard during
those days of Jhankaar beats! Rahman had produced and sequenced grooves so cool
that they are still untouched. Remember Shabba Shabba!, what a baseline.Wow
I played Daud a few days ago and thought i should complete a long pending
project i left at 60%, a club trippy mix of Oh Bhavare. Hope you guys like it,
its very Tiesto and Armin Van Burren in few places. I tried so hard to get
their sound here and ya coupled with a infectious groove of Rahman – What a
result!
So here it is. By the way, this is first time i have attempted a mix like this.
So comments are really welcome. Even the bad ones!!
and i really love this mix!hope you like it to

thanks you guys

PS : Some of you have written to me that because i choose sorta older works for
mixes, i have 'reminded' them of some of Rahman old works and they have started
to listen the originals again.this is my purpose...to keep ALL of Rahman's
works in our playlists...NOT just the recent ones.. Remixes I Originals I

Dont waste ur time in all these fights brother... Just leave everyone
to their free will. If someone doesnt like AR music, its his choice.
There is no compulsion that someone needs to like it.

Music is Divine, and it shouldnt arise as a reason for fights.

Dont waste ur time in all these fights brother... Just leave everyone
to their free will. If someone doesnt like AR music, its his choice.
There is no compulsion that someone needs to like it.

Music is Divine, and it shouldnt arise as a reason for fights.

2010-03-15 Thread arrbals
From the below recommendations i hereby rank them from 1 to 3.

1. Most have mentioned the below albums in the top 3. So they are
together number 1

 Delhi6, Jodha Akbar and VTV

2. It looks like the below ones fought with each other for 3,4,5 and 6th
spots (so they are ranked 2)

Jaane tu, Yuvraaj, Couples Retreat, Ada

3. Except for a few songs in each of the below albums most of you dint
like the album as a whole i guess. So they are number 3

 Slumdog, Ghajini, Blue

Love u Rahman !

[arr] Re: ARR not mentioning Vishal B at Filmfare award reception.........

2010-03-15 Thread raj
Hi chord,

Happy you brought this topic..

Yes, I was surprised that AR missed VB's name.
But it was just that he forgot. They do have lot of respect for each other. For
ex, when RDB got the film fare for best music, AR said
'My favourite album of the year is OMKARA'. So I am sure both share great
respect for each other.

Hope I dont start a regional war by saying these.

I just felt while watching filmfares, bollywood treats AR better than
Kollywood/tamil film industry does. I loved the ovation they gave in film fares
this yr and last yr,SRK's speech, Karan Johar's speech last year. Wonderful and
so happy at the respect they give for our AR.

In tamil, they either hesitate to praise AR, of if they do they ensure
they praise another MD equally ( no names ), and few want to drag him into
conterversies. What not?

Though being a tamilian myself, i am very happy that he moved to bollywood
early and now in hollywood :)

AR has taught all of us to love all, so lemme try my best to stick to it :)

yep, i too felt the same thing, among the three names mentioned by ARR i
personally feel that Vishal is more versatile in bringing various genres of
music in same album like what ARR does.. maybe you are right they might have
had cracked a joke over it later.

One small observation. when ARR received the award, he as always spoke very
down to earth and unassumingly. I loved that he mentioned the other nominee
composers of Pritam, Shankar, Amit, and he said that he liked their works.

However, I noticed that he did not mention Vishal Bharadwaj's name, who was
also a nominee for best music. Now, I interpret that as a simple oversight on
AR's part and I'm sure AR likes Vishal's music, but I just hope that Vishal

would think that he too thought as an oversight. Perhaps AR went to Vishal
later and said, "Oops, sorry, forgot to mention your name too" and perhaps they

Any thoughts about this? I'm always curious about the relationship between AR

own sphere. I have a feeling they both very much admire and respect each
other's works.

A.R.Rahman mentioned that his fav soundtrack is 'Omkara' when he won the
filmfare for 'Rang De Basanti'. He might have thought this is the time to
mention others.

moreso, i guess Rahman wasn't prepared to mention anyone's name. He just
spontaneously uttered those names that occurred to his mind instantly.. there
is nothing much to read into it

[arr] Want to know AR.. Its very little as much as you know him..

2010-03-15 Thread ravi
AR has a strong presence in melody like his predecessor IR. What makes him
different and appealing to the current trend is the way the melodies are
arranged along with orchestration. Well IR also has as well done this but the
difference is voice and instruments contributing melody together. IR songs has
orchestration in interludes and then followed by the voices.
Listen to Hawa sun Hawa from ADA (leave aside the topic why the reels are still
secure in the box) The first interlude begins with the flute and sets it all
when singing continues to take it further. From there the entire song just
follows and its pretty difficult to guess the phase. Clearly different from
other MD's melody. A melody song either from HJ or Yuvan has either a strong
section of singing or the orchestration and if together the melody of
orchestration is played and stops with interlude and theres a distinct
separation before the voice.
Coming back to AR
listen to Kannamucchi yennada (KK), Sonnalum (KV), yenthan vaanil (KV),
Kandukondein Kondukondein (KK), Azhage Sugama (Parthale Paravasm), E Ajnabi
(DilSe), Hosanna (VTV).. the list goes on.
This is one such among the various techniques used by AR which clearly sets him
apart from the race of other MD. I shall try to write how AR is unique in using
harmonies sometimes in my next post. But need to learn more before I write

[arr] ARR not mentioning Vishal B at Filmfare award reception.........

One small observation.when ARR received the award, he as always spoke very
down to earth and unassumingly. I loved that he mentioned the other nominee
composers of Pritam, Shankar, Amit, and he said that he liked their works.

However, I noticed that he did not mention Vishal Bharadwaj's name, who was
also a nominee for best music. Now, I interpret that as a simple oversight on
AR's part and I'm sure AR likes Vishal's music, but I just hope that Vishal
didn't feel too bad or hurt. Vishal is a classy, down to earth guy too, so
would think that he too thought as an oversight. Perhaps AR went to Vishal
later and said, "Oops, sorry, forgot to mention your name too" and perhaps they

Any thoughts about this? I'm always curious about the relationship between AR
