I must agree too that my ears are being tuned to this song after frequent
listening of it. I begin to realize that this song is composed is such way
for obvious reasons. I am liking the street styled lyrics, and the how
melodic frame of the song is set. The line naadhari paya mave just grabs
your attention instantly. Tanvi as many revealed, is a surprise indeed.
Variety of flavor and style has set Kata Kata Keda Kari with an individual
distinct identity each. One notable sequence is the usage of Shennai and
Nadaswaram in the respective versions.

Even the chorus in both version, unfolds with a different voice treatment.
In Keda Kari there seem to be a off pitch sync every time the chorus is
heard..while the perfect sync is visible in Kata kata. I wonder if this is a
conscious effort by AR. It struck a different chord in me while listening to
it. But i have grown to love it as much :)

Anyhow, both version have their respectful captivating values. AR is totally
the master for such experimental track. Raavan(an) Rocks!!!

Ranja and behne de will be visually stunning.
Khilli Re i have a feeling will shortened.
Thok De will have all cameras on AB. I am reminded of king kong and

Kata Kata will be the most colorful. Again the song in my opinion will be
shortened with dialogs in between,\.

[arr] Vairamuthu's forte, Ravaanan and more...

2010-05-07 Thread Ravikumar Eswaran
Hi,

Vairamuthu is always at his best when he need to write lyrics for rural
subject. Vairamuthu+ARR+Bharathiraaja combination helped us to bear
Vairamuthu's rustic lyrics in ARR's music. Karuthamma, Kizhakku Seemayile and
Tajmahal are some good examples.

Mani might have chosen Vairamuthu for penning all the songs for the same reason
in Ravaanan and he has done enough justification to it. His lyrics with ARR's
music reminds me of their magic in the above said movies. 'Kodu potta' reminds
me of the 'Thirupaachi aruvaala' in Tajmahal as both falls in the same genre
(bravery). 'Kaadu potta kaadu' in karuthamma one his best lyrics to show the
drought situation in which a family lives with hope.

When I first listened Ravaanana after repeated hearing of Raavan, I felt very
odd. But after hearing it few more times, I started loving the songs and able
to appreciate it because of the lyrics. Since I dont know Hindi, I am not able
to appreciate Gulzaar's lyrics. Feeling very bad for it.

I too felt Anuradha's voice to be totally mismatching after hearing Ranjha
Ranjh but slowly got attracted towards the song.

[arr] Re: My song by song review of Raavan/Raavanan

2010-05-07 Thread Pravinder
From where I see it, ARR is far different than both C Ramchandra and Naushad
ali. 'Khili re' doesn't sound like any of their songs.

C Ramchandra's music was way softer than ARR and instrumentation less complex.
On the other hand Naushad's music somewhat harder and more often based on
Indian Classical.

ARR and C Ramchandra are more similar in terms of their experimentation with
western music.
ARR and Naushad are more similar in terms of the use of Indian classical music.

The only time ARR sounded very much like Naushad was in the BGM of Jodha Akbar
at a few times (e.g. Akbar goes to Amer).

I wish to recite one of the articles (one of real good ones) I once read about
ARR in HT, the reporter said:
I consider ARR alongwith Ghulam haider, C Ramchander, O P nayyer and R D
Burman as the MDs who changed the trends of music in their respective time
period.

As far as I know, Ghulam haider brought folk music (including Punjabi) to make
difference to that time's music, both C Ramchandra and O P Nayyar brought
western music however it was O P Nayyar who really simplified the complex music
of that time and made Hindi film music famous in every household (Shankar
Jaikishan did the same but OP was OP). RD Burman has never been my favorite, SD
was 100 times better for me. There is no point in writing what ARR brought to
Indian music.

As far as my choice concerns I prefer O P Nayyer above all of them after ARR in
terms of experimentation and magical music.
It is very interesting and important to know that O P Nayyar never ever used
Lata Mangeshkar. I guess music composers can really make a difference with or
without good singers.

Overall for me; ARR, Naushad and O P Nayyar are the best MDs of India.

Warm regards,
Pravinder.

A while back, I posted a review of Raavan from a very broad perspective and
angle, highlighting what I thought were strengths and weaknesses in the album
and trying to put the album within the context of ARR's musical career. I
feel I have now heard the songs enough times to generate a more detailed
review/analyais of each track, including the Tamil version. I apologize for
the length in advance, as this is pretty long.

 1) Beera/Veera
This character based track oozes with spirit and spunk. I love the
African/Tribal sonic theme of this track, hearkening to our primitive and
ancient roots as the main character's pride and pomp is showcased here in a
very colorful and entertaining manner. Beautiful percussive rhythms
sustained in a groove that is extremely infectious and riveting. The tamil
version features a brighter and louder ghugru track in the beginning with
increased bass volume during the ARR sung Uh Ee Ee Ee Oh part. The Tamil
version also features a funky bass line that is muted in volume in the Hindi
version. Similarly, I noticed a warm pad sound chordal sequence that is
higher in volume during the first chorus in the Tamil version, whereas it is
almost muted in the Hindi version. The xylophone/vibraphone based music
interlude sparks the imagination of a jungle/forrest backdrop full of frolic
and freedom in both versions, while the Tamil version has an extra counter
melodic upper bass pattern that is not heard in the Hindi version during the
same interlude. The animal sounds only add to the fun spiritedness and truly
enable one to visualize the cinematic backdrop. Keerthi Sagathia's injection
during the Antara only adds sweetness and depth to the dhana dhan tan
parts. The chord sequences during the choral sections are very pleasing,
accentuated by some beautiful, bright guitar strumming, adding a shiny
overture to an already sparkling oeuvre. The singing is extremely well
executed by Vijay Prakash and company, including Mustafa, who is singing an
entirely different style that we have heard before from him. I bet they had a
lot of fun recording this number. A bit too short in length this track, but
boy does it pack tremendous energy and groove. An amazingly feel good,
peppy, energetic, fully exotic, colorful number that will also be popular
 with children.

 2)Behene De/Usure Pogudhey
Karthik deserve to win best male playback singer award for both versions in
my opinion, and the year is still young. Superb, passionate execution on his
part and one can really feel the emotions that Rahman wanted to convey
through his smoothly textured voice. This track to me is like a hybrid with
Hollywood background score meeting Bollywood Sufi film song. Emotionally
high in intrigue, mystery, and longingness with a touch of anger, accentuated
by the distorted electric guitars which are never overdone, this track is the
album's heavyweight champion based on raagas Bhairavi and Basant Mukhari
loosely. The first minute of the track sets the tone with an amazingly
haunting prelude full of beautiful string chordal sequences and bright,
crystal clear bells with a vibraphone/drum backdrop loop, once again,
emphasizing the primal/raw/earthy consistency of this soundtrack. The string
interlude is equally impressive with complex, negative emotions being
communicated and having an abstract fee akin to a hollywood background score
for an epic film. Notice the brooding short, but powerfully noticeable low
octave string rhythm that comes in and out from right to left in the stanza
following the first music interlude. Towards the end, what a culmination of
synth, strings, percussion, electric guitars as the song evolves into a
climax. Notice the sprawling synth sequence before the outro that only
electrifies an already intensifying and passionate plea, further enhanced by
a low, edgy bass synth section and a sinister electric guitar track. The
ending choral sequence is in pure epic form with a chord formation that is
both haunting and tragic in mood and feel. Yes, the word tragedy came to
mind when hearing this outro explosion and what an amazing impact it had on
my senses and spirit both, totally capturing me in its process. It's
goose-pimples all the way for me from the very first note to the very last in
this track, which to me, is one of ARR's finest tracks ever. The Tamil
version (Usure Pogudhey) I feel expresses the feelings a bit more powerfully
than the Hindi version, but overall, both tracks stand equally tall in my
esteem. What a punch, what an impact, what a groove, what a monster of a
 track!

  Very interesting comparison

I was just curious, is the voice sample maybe Anuradha Sriram's? That was the
impression I got initially after the Hindi release, as both Rekha and Anuradha
were credited. Considering Rekha B was the main singer, I reckoned Anuradha was
the distorded back-and-forth voice... My thoughts got confirmed (that is, to my
ears :-) ) when I heard the Tamil version.

In any case. Ranjha is a wonderful example of ARR's interpretation of
folk-meets-electron ica. It's a trend I personally appreciate a lot as a result
of my music taste (Maricham, Liquid Dance, Mausam Escape).. I didn't
immediately expect Ranjha to this row but it touches my musical senses
somewhere!

In my song by song review, I briefly mentioned that ARR sampled Rekha's
voice and used it as a drone backdrop with electronic distortion coming and
going throughout the song. The tweaking that he did with the sound frequencies
in that drone, modulating the treble range within a uniformly timed wavelength,
reminds me so much of the Mosquito effect sound he used in the Mosquito
track from Connections. He used it brilliantly in this track!

[arr] Re: Behne De Usuru Poguthe (Water versus Fire)

2010-05-07 Thread Jahanzeb
Thanks Rawat. Usuru Poguthe's lyrics sounds superb and equally or may be more
powerful (at least in the beginning) than the Hindi version.
Though rightly said sadly later it turns into a regular sensuous love song. in
that respect Behne de is better. I will prefer Behne de over Tamil version any
day also because the Behne de promo had a killer impact on me because of its
visuals. all that rain and water (as well as and hills and forest etc) in the
promo doubled the meaning of Behne de and lyrics. now every time I listen to it
it gives me feeling of rain and water and etc. this also tells picturization
can have such a strong impact and can give immense boost to the song/lyrics.
this is just like in the case of Taal se taal, which although didn't have much
to do with rain and water directly (except that drops in the intro and first
verse Saawan ne aaj to mujhko bhigo diya..) but the picturization in heavy
rain in hill station area has put such an impact that whenever I listen to it I
feel as if it is raining outside (and also that I am in some hill station).

then it remains on water asking clouds to rain so much as to dissolve, and I
wonder how would he float on water after getting dissolved.

  /Jahanzeb

 dear Jahanzeb

From srini's blog, these are the lyrics and translations BY SRINI:

 Usurae Poguthey - Ravanan
Intha Bhoomiyila Eppa Vanthu Nee Porantha
 En Buthikula Theeporiya Nee Vethacha
 Adi Thaeku Mara kaadu Perusuthaan
 Chinna Theekuchi Osaram Sirusuthaan

[You planted a spark in my mind
the moment you were born on this earth
The teak wood forest is huge and
the size of the match stick is small]

 Adi Thaeku Mara Kaadu Perusuthaan
 Chinna Theekuchi Osaram Sirusuthaan
 Oru Theekuchi Vizhunthu Pudikuthadi
 Karunthaekumara Kaadu Vedikuthadi

ye[The teak wood forest is huge and
the size of the match stick is small
The match stick falls on the ground and ignite
And the teak wood forest bursts into flames]

 --

The beginning is great and indeed better and clearer than the hindi
 version.

while hindi version gets confused - it talks about water (behne de),
then it switches to tear drop from eye, then it again switches to
chingari jala koi, and, aag laga zara, then it again swings to sehra
ki pyaas bujha that is water, then it remains on water asking clouds
to rain so much as to dissolve, and I wonder how would he float on
 water after getting dissolved.

But, Tamil version, speaks clearly and unwaveringly about fire. forest
is huge and matchstick is small, and, match stick falls on the ground,
is conveying the hesitation and doubt of a person very well.

but, then, the tamil version takes an about turn, and becomes a
 sensuous love song:

 Oosurae Poguthey Oosurae Poguthey
 Odatha Nee Kondam Suzhikayila
 Oooo Maaman Thavikiraen, Madipicha Kaekaraen
 Manasathaadi En Manikuyilae
 Akkarai Cheemaiyil Nee Irunthum
 Aiviral Theenditha Nenaikuthadi
 Agini Pazhamunu Therinjirunthum
 Adikadi Naaku Thudikuthadi

[It’s kills me when I see you squeeze your lips
Oh dear, I’m begging you to give me your heart
Even though you are on the other side of the shore
My fingers yearn to touch you
My tongue yearns to taste you even though
It knows that you are a ball of fire]
 --

I didn't read the lyrics any further. Such a beautiful opening
deteriorated to an ordinary love song. It still seems not the problem
of Vairamuthu. When he could pen such a descriptive opening, he could
have carried on, but it seems Mani's problem that his script was
calling far a love song wrapped in a revolution.

May be there is no problem when we see the film, it might all make sense.

peot of finer emotions, he could not get himself to write this song
with fire and compromised to be with water, but fire is what this
song is about, so I think Vairamuthu could get that and could pen the

liked it very much. entertaining and well made. superb BGM, superb song
picturization, first class acting (especially liked Simbu's very much) and a
pretty good script. watched a good love story after very long time. though i
found the second half much weaker than first. the way the film started (the

unnecessary rift between Karthik and Jessie's brother came, the script lost its
hold and there were many others flaws later as well. also i really wish GM had
gone for happy ending like the Telugu version. the ending was a shocker. but

i really wish ARR does more of GM songs as he does real justice to ARR's songs

[arr] Re: Raavanan vs Raavan - Comparison - Why?

2010-05-07 Thread Dinesh Scaran
Rawat, i understand u feel comfortable listening to Hindi songs as u understand
them. But Rawat, seriously, as for me, im not being bad here, but most of his
dubbed albums from Tamil to Hindi r not in par with the originals (Tamil). Take
Roja, Kadhalan, Bombay and such, that spark was missing in the Hindi and Telugu
versions. i shall give a detailed explanation below.

But this is always not the case, im not being totally inclined towards Tamil
only. For instance im a crazy fan of One 2 Ka 4, Lagaan and such. I could not
bare to listen to the Tamil version of Sona Nahi, Osaka Muraiya, Ruth Agayire
and such. I actually kept the cassettes far from my reach. It spoilt the
initial magic of the Hindi versions.

Same thing for New-Naani album. The Pedave Palinke was so magical which i
couldnt digest the Tamil version of it Kaalayil Dhinamum.

Same thing goes to the the Kannada version of Doli Sajakhe Rakhna/Jodi. Well i
really liked Chandramukiye than Velli Malare and Bhol Sajini. The
Kannada language was too beautiful for that song. Loved how Madhushree went
Surya SakaniSurya Sakani... such beautiful song. That particular song in
Kannada sounded the best among all the version.

Another thing Rawat, if u feel u want to listen to ARR's Tamil songs (Yes, im
guessing ur missing allot of his Gems, seriously)... i would like u to go
through these albums, they were not dubbed into Hindi.

1.Kangalal Kaithi Sei (M-A-G-I-C)-- says it all.
2.Anthimanthirai (the most underrated album, but the theme musics r mindblowing)
3.Uzhavan (start with Pennale Pennale, an amazing song)
4.Iruvar (oh please please listen to this, magical Mani-ARR album)
5.Sangamam (i think u wont be able to like this, since its a very typical South
Indian flavor, but nevertheless, u should not miss Sowkiyama.)
6.Thenali's Porkalam, Thakirikitha, Swasame.
7.Kannathil Muttamittal (Excellent album, esp Vellai Pookal and Kannathil
Muttamittal by Chinmayi)
8.Rhythm (amazing score... the panchaboothangal - 5 elements were composed
beautifully in each song. Each songs represent each element. Listen to them and
guess which is which... ;) )
9. Boys (Amazing album, it was a second Roja for ARR in Tamil. This album made
ARR bounced back again, after a serious of flops in Tamil, both movie and album
wise - read Star, Alli Arjuna, Udhaya, PArashuram).

On the dubbed albums, here r the once u SHOULD not miss.

1.Alaipayuthey (Original version of Saathiya) - Listen to Pacchai Niramey,
Hariharan gave the whole song such life. He sung the song as if he is
whispering those beautiful lyrics into the lady's ears. Such soft and delicate
song. Sneghidene was beautiful as the male chorus had a very haunting magic in
it. And Sadhana did a wonderful job in the Tamil/Telugu version. U should
listen to know what i mean. And Evano Oruvan is such a powerful song. Such
sadness in the song. Was totally missing in that Hindi version. And ARR used
this song as BGM so beautifully in Alaipayuthey. Really emoted the scenes so
well. Yaaro Yaarodi is too Tamil folkish to suit the Hindi lyrics. But im
surprised how ARR did manage to give it the right feel for Chalka. Still Yaaro
Yaarodi had a very rustic feel. Kadhal Sadugudu was soo sweet. A real contrast
compared to Adnan' Sami in Aye Udi Udi. Its like 2 different songs. U should
listen to Tamil version. it will be a new feel for u.

2.Thiruda Thiruda - Seriously, the Chinese girl's work in Thee Thee is
unmatchable... such beautifuly rendered. lovely, and powerful. Ofcource, all
the tracks should be listened to be enjoyed.

3.Uyire - All the songs had a different feel. When u listen to Uyire, u wont
have a feel ur listening to a dubbed album. It has its own identity. IF u think
Lata did a splendid job in Jiya Jale, please listen to what S.Janaki did in
Nenjinile. Check out how did she finished the song with her rendition. Just so
appropriate. No offense meant to Lata and her version though, just S.Janaki did
it too well that it needs such acknowledgment. Do listen to it. Thaiyya Thaiyya
had a different feel alltogether, compared to Chaiyya Chaiyya. Poongatrile was
magical amazing rendition by Unnimenon.

Ofcource the other 90s original Tamil albums should be visited. It holds its
own charm. But the above are a must, immediately. haha

This mail is not directed to Rawat alone, but to all the ARR fans who did not
get a chance to listen to these version because they do not understand
Tamil/Telugu/Kannada. Please do.

Nice one Suresh.

I guess Raavanan will always be considered a dubbed version because it came
after. I think if it was a soundtrack on it's own, people would have
appreciated the lyrics much much more than they are now.

Rawat, i understand u feel comfortable listening to Hindi songs as u
understand them. But Rawat, seriously, as for me, im not being bad here, but
most of his dubbed albums from Tamil to Hindi r not in par with the
originals (Tamil). Take Roja, Kadhalan, Bombay and such, that spark was
missing in the Hindi and Telugu versions. i shall give a detailed
 explanation below.

But this is always not the case, im not being totally inclined towards
Tamil only. For instance im a crazy fan of One 2 Ka 4, Lagaan and such. I
could not bare to listen to the Tamil version of Sona Nahi, Osaka Muraiya,
Ruth Agayire and such. I actually kept the cassettes far from my reach. It
spoilt the initial magic of the Hindi versions.

Same thing for New-Naani album. The Pedave Palinke was so magical which i
couldnt digest the Tamil version of it Kaalayil Dhinamum.

Same thing goes to the the Kannada version of Doli Sajakhe Rakhna/Jodi.
Well i really liked Chandramukiye than Velli Malare and Bhol Sajini.
The Kannada language was too beautiful for that song. Loved how Madhushree
went Surya SakaniSurya Sakani... such beautiful song. That particular
song in Kannada sounded the best among all the version.

Another thing Rawat, if u feel u want to listen to ARR's Tamil songs (Yes,
