P.L. Krishnan ? isnt it suppose to be the carnatic vocalist T.M.Krisha ? he is singing from 4:11 onwards T.L.Maharajan sings from 2:49 onwards Great to see Lady Kass n Krizzy in the league too, pretty talented duo from singapore. Krizzy raps alongside blaaze. While Lady Kash comes in the end with her rather cute voice chanting tamizh mozhiyaam engal reminiscent of the voice of the actress saroja devi ?? The rap sequence has this haunting string background just brilliant starting from 3 :47

Jha, May 17, 2010 - 11:12 IST [image: Gulzar]Mani Ratnam's *Raavanhttp://www.bollywoodhungama.com/broadband/video/Movie-Promos/2cLcBR10/3/Ranjha-Ranjha-Raavan.html * has just been given a new song, thanks to that poet *par excellence*Gulzar who saw the film and suggested the embellishment. The director, always open to fresh ideas from his team, readily agreed. Composer Rahman was informed and that's how*Raavan* got a new song. Gulzar Saab, who just back from Goa after participating in the stage rendition of four of his plays, says the song was almost a gift he owed Mani Ratnam for gifting him something that he, Gulzar, had never received in his entire 47-year old career as a lyricist. Mani sent the poet-lyricist a note after the release of the *Raavanhttp://www.bollywoodhungama.com/movies/mstills/14148/index.html *music congratulating Gulzar Saab for the songs. Says Gulzar Saab, In my entire career I've never received such a heartwarming endorsement of my work. I received a note from Mani Ratnam congratulating me and saying he's very proud of the music. And look at the humility of this genius. No filmmaker has ever sent me a note like this. Mani is the only one. And this one gesture has enhanced my respect for him even more. Not only this gesture, Gulzar Saab also received an invitation from Mani to see the film at a special screening for which the poet flew down to Chennai recently. It was there that the new song suddenly happened. Recounts Gulzar Saab, After editing *Raavan*, Mani wanted me to watch the film. No filmmaker invites even the technical crew for a preview, let alone the lyricist. I flew down to Chennai to watch the film. I'd never do something like this for anyone else. This is how strongly I feel about this man's humility and greatness. As the end-credits rolled and Rahman's music began, Mani Ratnam and Gulzar Saab thought there ought to be a song at the end. That's how Gulzar Saab wrote an additional number for Raavan... '*Ab Iss Shareer Ke Sirey Khol Dey/Aur Goongi Aatma Ko Bol Dey*'. Says Gulzar Saab, Both Mani and I felt the music that Rahman had composed for the end titles was too beautiful to go wordless. We decided to give words to Rahman's creation. Rahman was then given the task of turning the music piece into a song. Interestingly neither Mani Ratnam nor A. R. Rahman fully understands Gulzar's Urdu poetry. Defends Gulzar Saab, But they are never short of questions. Never does a word go in until Mani is fully convinced of its relevance. He's never hesitant about asking. I would be appalled if my words were accepted blindly by a director. Even if his Urdu is weak, Mani has a terrific sense of poetry and images. http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/news/2010/05/17/14124/index.html -- - Regards ~ ~ A.R.Rajib ~ ~

Timed to coincide with the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, when journalists from the world over assemble here, the event was attended by the lead stars of the movie, Vikram, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. Amit Khanna of Reliance Big Pictures, which has produced the films, described Mani Ratnam as arguably the best Indian director living today, and said that he and the rest believed in taking such rare movies as * Raavan/Raavanan* across the globe. Both the Hindi and Tamil versions will open in 58 countries in mid-June. He hoped that this world would help transcend barriers. Suhasini, Mani Ratnam's wife and the film's co-producer and dialogue writer for the Tamil edition, said that it would help us understand the grey parts that all of us have in us None of us is completely white or black. She was all praise for A.R. Rahman's music, and said that it merged beautifully with the story. In fact, the music accentuated picture. Songs have a great role to play. They do take the plot forward. Most Indian movies and stories can trace their origins to the two great epics, the *Ramayana *and *Mahabharata,* and*Raavan/Raavanan* was not different. It has been inspired by the Ramayana, though it really is not a take-off on that. Incidentally, Ratnam shot both versions simultaneously, something he has never done before, and Vikram and Aishwarya play in both. Bachchan only in the Hindi version. He told the media that his part was his career's most challenging, most difficult and most stimulating. It was physically exhausting, and Vikram agreed. Rai felt that apart from the intricacies of essaying the Hindi and Tamil heroine all at the same time, the inhospitable jungle terrain where they shot Ratnam's work posed its own hazards. But at the end of it all, she and the rest found a sense of immense satisfaction and joy. Vikram agreed, and said in a private conversation with me that he dubbed for the Hindi version as well. If Aishwarya could have dubbed for the Tamil edition, why not I for Hindi, he quipped. *Raavan/Ravanan* is the story of Dev and his wife, Ragini, a classical dancer, whose trials begin when he takes up a new posting in a small north Indian town. There the police do not execute the law, but Beera, who has changed the power equation. http://www.hindustantimes.com/rssfeed/hollywired/Raavan-unveiled-at-Cannes/Article1-544892.aspx -- - Regards ~ ~ A.R.Rajib ~ ~

They don’t see heat, rain or any personal priorities. They some how gather enough arms and ammunition in their bags to destroy an evil. The evil is HUNGER and their ammunition is FOOD Packets... These guys hunt for the hungry faces and leave a smile on every face they visit. Feeding one Hungry is more sacred than praying for hours in a temple. Humanity still exists on earth and these guys are the living example of it. Initiating a Nobel deed isn’t a big deal but to continue it for years together without missing even a single time is a BIG DEAL!!! But what’s the source of such positive energy? What brings them together? What keeps them going without fail? Yeah they are fans of a music composer called as AR Rahman and call themselves as Rahmaniacs. But how can just a music composer make people so passionate about Humanity. The world, where everyone has no time even for their own family, why are these guys going around in search for hungry strangers and helping them??? Is someone forcing them??? Yes! Their conscience forces them and Who is keeping this conscience still alive??? Some divine music notes. In evening, after making our hands dirty the whole day while struggling with this world to survive, all we need is few minutes alone with musical notes composed by the maestro. And I believe music works like cleanser. To survive these days, we create a cemented layer around our heart or it would be impossible for any emotional person to live peacefully. But his music works like a hammer and break the stone around our heart and shakes our conscience. Sometimes I feel as if ARR is a messenger from God and who tells us the words of God himself through his compositions. The more i listen to some of his compositions the more I feel connected to divine powers. And same is the case with these guys. They are connected with God and the same is reflected by their deeds. They search for opportunities and spend every special occasion with kids battling in Orphanages. They serve them special food and entertain them and believe me I have seen God in the eyes of those Kids. Their smile is everything. We were fortunate enough that our parents spent thousands of rupees for toys, gifts, clothes but did we actually understand the value? Just spend 5/- for a chocolate for them and see the appreciation in their eyes. AR Rahman fans are so different. When others are spending liters of milk or lakhs of rupees on the posters of their heroes, these guys keep loving their idol in heart and keep the flame of their good deeds burning. [arr] Movie Review: ‘Jodhaa Akbar’
Late..but latest.. :) http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/35682/ Eighty elephants, fifty-five camels, and over four thousand kilograms of gold jewelry reportedly went into its production. In addition to “Braveheart” style battles and courtly intrigue, Ashutosh Gowariker’s “Jodhaa Akbar” also features several lavish musical interludes. Welcome to Bollywood cinema, the internationally popular flamboyant films produced in Mumbai (formerly Bombay). Growing in recognition and popular acclaim with American audiences following the success of 2009 Oscar winner “Slumdog Millionaire,” the Film Society of Lincoln Center launches “Muslim Cultures of Bombay,” a retrospective of Bollywood’s most ambitious and socially conscious historical dramas, this Wednesday with a special screening of Gowariker’s three and a half hour epic. The young Emperor Akbar has finally consolidated the Muslim Mughal Imperium’s hold on all of Hindustan. For the sake of peace with the restless Hindu Rajput principalities, Akbar has taken Jodhaa, a Rajput princess, as his bride. She also happens to be very beautiful but is less than thrilled by the proposed union, only acquiescing when the Emperor promises to respect her faith and build a modest Hindu temple for her within the palace. While duly married, it will take a serious campaign of wooing for Akbar to win her heart. Of course, India has experienced years of Hindu-Muslim conflicts, even predating Kashmir and the Partition. It is that subtext that deeply informs “Akbar.” While Rajput reaction has been highly critical, accusing the film of whitewashing the anti-Hindu campaigns of the historical Akbar and his heirs, western audiences will likely interpret it as a rebuke of militant Islam. Whether historically accurate or not, the film’s pivotal decision to lift the tax on Hindu religious pilgrimage clearly celebrates religious tolerance. While the disapproving mullahs of the Mughal Court are unflaggingly portrayed as deceitful and intolerant, the heroic Akbar’s observance of Islam comes across as simply a requirement of his position rather than an examined faith. By contrast, the only unambiguous example of pure religious devotion is that of Jodhaa’s Hinduism. Notwithstanding the important social and religious significance of the story, it is very definitely grandly epic story telling. Wild elephants are tamed, pitched battles are joined, and there are indeed musical numbers, courtesy of “Slum Dog” Oscar-winning musician A. R. Rahman, perhaps the best being the Sufis serenading Akbar on his wedding night. It also has Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, often heralded in Internet polls as the world’s most beautiful woman, as Jodhaa, and Hrithik Roshan (soon be seen in “Kites,” a major Bollywood trial balloon for mainstream American commercial acceptance) as Akbar. JODHAA: Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan portrays half of the title character in Jodhaa Akbar. While their chemistry is okay, the film is most successful when luxuriating in the grandeur of its enormous scale and lush design. It even inspired a Jodhaa Akbar collection from the Indian jeweler Tanis. With some cool battle scenes and most of its courtship done through fencing, “Akbar” certainly satisfies the audience looking for more on-screen swordplay. It also has plenty of romantic yearning and high tragedy as befits a sweeping epic. Old fashioned in an entertaining way, the extravagantly produced “Akbar” is a perfect choice to kick-off the FSLC’s new retrospective, “Social Dramas and Shimmering Spectacles: Muslim Cultures of Bombay Cinema,” this Wednesday evening (May 19) at the Walter Reade Theater.

Posted by: Karthik In: Commentaryhttp://itwofs.com/milliblog/category/commentary/ | Piece of my mind! http://itwofs.com/milliblog/category/piece-of-my-mind/ | Random thoughts http://itwofs.com/milliblog/category/random-thoughts/ A R Rahman recently composed theme songs for 2 states – the first was for Gujarat, scored for Gujarat's Golden Jubilee celebrations and the second was the theme song composed for World Classical Tamil Conference. Now, what would be the shelf life of such songs, composed for specific occasions? In case of Bharatbala's Vande Mataram project, it was meant as, and marketed as a commercial pop album and hence it worked wonderfully, with phenomenal shelf-life. But, what do these one-off theme songs give Rahman, who's music is always expected with feverish perseverance by his fans? Money? Possibly, but that is the least of Rahman's considerations given his global standing. An association with the state heads or the cause the theme songs are supposed to represent? Very possible – since there is time-based/historical significance to these events, and hence, possibly, the songs too. But really, how often are these songs played? At least in case of the Tamil World Conference, it is nothing but an ego-massage by the current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and it is sad to see Rahman pandering to such blatant abuse of power when there are many more worthy causes that are crying for attention. Tamil Nadu is a state where there seems to be a unofficial diktat to hold at least one conference/meeting every week with Karunanidhi as chief guest – it is a cycle actually, since the exclusive TV rights of such weekly conferences/meetings go to Karunanidhi-owned Kalaignar TV and slots are sold to sponsors immediately, completing the money circle. But Rahman is from Tamil Nadu, and needs to act like one, beyond personal beliefs – if that means doing a theme song for a Tamil World Conference, so be it. I've nothing personally against the conference and love my mother tongue quite adequately that I chose Tamil as 2nd language all through my studies, while my classmates had incredible fun with Sanskrit. But I'm befuddled with the idea of using a celebrated, globally renowned composer for scoring a theme song that may never be used or remembered beyond one evening. If this was a film project, would Rahman agree? Or, would he use his discretion to see the pointlessness of the exercise and focus on better projects? I cannot answer that hypothetical question and I suppose neither will Rahman – even if he has an answer. That is called being politically correct. The song for Gujarat seems to have slightly better significance – after all, 50 years is not a small milestone – and, roping in a celebrated composer to mark that occasion with a special song is a great idea. There are murmurs about Narendra Modi doing this tactically, given his much-maligned past the composer's religion, but such parochial assumptions insult both the occasion and the composer, who is known for his religion-agnostic outlook. The Gujarat song and the Tamil conference theme are predictable to a large extent – rousing music that builds gradually; assortment of singers and state/culture/language-specific instruments used for obvious reasons; jingoistic lyrics, again, for obvious and rightful reasons – Rahman's fans are happy that they have something from their idol. But, what exactly are these theme compositions meant to achieve? And for whom? I personally believe that these initiatives gain more from Rahman's name attached to them than Rahman gaining anything from them. That, of course, does not make it any less important for Rahman to decline such opportunities, but I really wonder why an incredibly busy composer who has top-ranked directors and producers waiting in queue outside his house to sign him for their projects, agree to such one-off efforts that may be used once in their life time and revered only by fanatic followers? The event was attended by the lead stars of the movie, Vikram, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. Amit Khanna of Reliance Big Pictures, which has produced the films along with Madras Talkies, described Mani Ratnam as arguably the best Indian director living today, and said that he and the rest believed in taking such rare movies to the global audience. Suhasini Mani Ratnam, the film’s co-producer and dialogue writer for the Tamil version, said that the film would help “Us understand the grey parts that all of us have in us…None of us is completely white or black”. Heaping laurels on Grammy-Oscar winner A R Rahman, who had scored music for the film, she said that the music maestro’s work merged beautifully with the story. “In fact, the music accentuated picture. Songs have a great role to play. They do take the plot forward,” she said. Vikram and Abhishek told the media that their roles in the film were most challenging, most difficult and most stimulating. It was physically exhausting, the actors said. Aishwarya said that apart from the intricacies of essaying the Hindi and Tamil heroine all at the same time, the inhospitable jungle terrain where they shot the film posed its own hazards. *Click to view - 'Villain' Promo Nite @ Chennai - Galleryhttp://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/telugu/gallery/Events/22139.html * *http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/telugu/article/57052.html * * * -- - Regards ~ ~ A.R.Rajib ~ ~

At the 63rd Cannes film festival, Kapur who also is a part of the jury, introduced the first look of his latest project titled, Paani. The film will be directed by Kapur himself, although the script is written by David Farr. The Oscar winning music composer A.R.Rahman is composing the music of the film and has said to be completed two songs already for the magnimous project. The official synopsis of the movie states that Paani is a futuristic love story set in a mega city where water becomes a rare commodity and this scarcity leads to dire circumstances. The movie divides the society into two conflicting halves, in which the upper city holds all the water supply and transfers a minimal amount to the lower city. The love story takes place between a girl from the upper half of the city and a rat boy in the lower half. According to the Hollywood Reporter magazine, the budget of the film is $30 million (approx rupees 135 crores) and is produced by Swarovski Entertainment and Adlabs founder-turned-producer Manmohan Shetty. Kapur plans to start shooting in November. After receiving international recognition through his masterpiece Bandit Queen, and making a permanent space for himself in Hollywood with Elizabeth, Kapur wishes to make a strong impact on international cinema as well as deliver a message through his new project Paani. We wish him all the luck! http://www.filmfare.com/articles/shekhar-kapurs-reveals-the-first-look-of-paani-at-cannes-908.html

In recent years, the award has gone to other major world filmmakers such as Takeshi Kitano, Abbas Kiarostami, Agnes Varda, and Sylvester Stallone. This year however, Swiss watch manufacturer Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrates its six years of partnership with the Venice International Film Festival by announcing Jaeger-LeCoultre 'Glory to the Filmmaker' award. Speaking on why they chose Mani Ratnam for this honour, Marco Mueller, Venice Film Festival director says, Mani Ratnam used to initially make movies only in his native tongue, Tamil, but has now been one of a handful of filmmakers to successfully handle the transition to the All-India market. One of the great innovators in contemporary Indian cinema, he helped introduce the auteur concept to contemporary Bollywood. His movies display precision and poise, and have always been removed from the bombast and bluster of mass-produced regional cinema. The lavish musical numbers in his films, some of the best-tailored in Mumbai and Madras in recent years, have influenced the style of many others (as well as the design of commercials and music videos). Ratnam's most celebrated films have become part of the cinematic imagination of the sub-continent. On the occasion of the award ceremony, the Mostra will present the festival premiere of Mani Ratnam's much-anticipated forthcoming film *Raavan*http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/broadband/video/Movie-Promos/841oc899/3/Theatrical-Trailer-Raavan.html, attended by the director and by its cast and crew including Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, and music maestro A.R. Rahman. * Raavan* is produced by Madras Talkies in association with Reliance Big Pictures and distributed internationally by Reliance Big Pictures and IM Global. *Raavan* will enchant audiences with its stirring drama and entrancing musical sequences, says Marco Mueller. We are proud to be hosting the festival premiere of this wonderful film, which will be presented at the 2010 Mostra in both the Hindi and the Tamil versions. As in previous editions, together with the award the director will be presented with a Reverso Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, a one-of-a-kind model with a commemorative engraving. http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/news/2010/05/18/14133/index.html -- - Regards ~ ~ A.R.Rajib ~ ~

Very possible since there is time-based/historical significance to these events, and hence, possibly, the songs too. But really, how often are these songs played? At least in case of the Tamil World Conference, it is nothing but an ego-massage by the current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and it is sad to see Rahman pandering to such blatant abuse of power when there are many more worthy causes that are crying for attention. Tamil Nadu is a state where there seems to be a unofficial diktat to hold at least one conference/meeting every week with Karunanidhi as chief guest it is a cycle actually, since the exclusive TV rights of such weekly conferences/meetings go to Karunanidhi-owned Kalaignar TV and slots are sold to sponsors immediately, completing the money circle. But Rahman is from Tamil Nadu, and needs to act like one, beyond personal beliefs if that means doing a theme song for a Tamil World Conference, so be it. I cannot answer that hypothetical question and I suppose neither will Rahman even if he has an answer. That is called being politically correct. The song for Gujarat seems to have slightly better significance after all, 50 years is not a small milestone and, roping in a celebrated composer to mark that occasion with a special song is a great idea. There are murmurs about Narendra Modi doing this tactically, given his much-maligned past the composer's religion, but such parochial assumptions insult both the occasion and the composer, who is known for his religion-agnostic outlook. The Gujarat song and the Tamil conference theme are predictable to a large extent rousing music that builds gradually; assortment of singers and state/culture/language-specific instruments used for obvious reasons; jingoistic lyrics, again, for obvious and rightful reasons Rahman's fans are happy that they have something from their idol. But, what exactly are these theme compositions meant to achieve? And for whom? I personally believe that these initiatives gain more from Rahman's name attached to them than Rahman gaining anything from them. That, of course, does not make it any less important for Rahman to decline such opportunities, but I really wonder why an incredibly busy composer who has top-ranked

[arr] Re: Non-Tamils watched VTV ?
Everyone was praising this movie (at least here in yahoo group), same here... found a bit cheesy. Same old story of 80-90s where parents dont agree for marriage. It was predictable yet I was not bored at any time. Background music and great picturization kept me entertained. Oh yes! both Simbu Trisha acted well.. just that there wasnt much to be told in 2 hr 40 min.. perhaps could have been shorter. [arr] Bombay Dreams of getting bigger
Cannes, May 18: Bombay Dreams, the musical, is to be made into a big-budget film. The venture will be a collaboration between Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Really Useful Group in the UK, and Marquee Pictures, a Beverley Hills-based US film production company. Canada-based Deepa Mehta, much admired for her trilogy Earth, Fire and Water, will direct the film in 2011, once she has completed the movie adaptation she is currently working on of Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children. The musical ran successfully for two years before opening in 2004 in Broadway where it did less well. However, the triumph of Slumdog Millionaire, which took eight Oscars in 2009, appears to have convinced the Americans that now is the propitious moment to turn Bombay Dreams, the stage musical, into a movie. The story of an Indian slum boy, who wants to make it big in tinsel town, epitomises the Hollywood and the American dream. Mehta's husband, David Hamilton, a producer on many of her films, said in Cannes: A.R. Rahman, who wrote the music for the musical, is writing some new music for the film. The people behind the project are very serious about making the film. The screenplay will be written by Sabrina Dhawan, acclaimed writer of the much loved Monsoon Wedding, which was directed by Mehta who commented: Bombay Dreams has a rich and compelling story, appealing characters and a satisfying interplay of comedy, romance and the dramatic. It really is the ideal musical to adapt for film. Lloyd Webber, who can claim substantial credit for introducing Rahman to the western world, said: I am very proud to have presented Bombay Dreams in Britain where it was a ground-breaking show. It was deeply rewarding for me to see Rahman's work recognised in America when he won two Oscars and I am thrilled to be working with him again on this exciting project. Rahman returned the compliment: I have had a wonderful collaboration with Andrew. And now I am very happy to continue this collaboration. I have worked on more than 100 movies, and believe that this may be my most exciting project. In 1998 Lloyd Webber went to the Hammersmith Lyric to see Fourteen Songs, Two Weddings and a Funeral with Parminder Nagra in the lead, the Tamasha Theatre Company's brilliant musical adaptation of the Bollywood blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Seeing the musical encouraged Lloyd Webber to take the gamble of making Bombay Dreams. Shekhar Kapur, the director currently serving on the Cannes jury, put him in touch with Rahman. When the musical first opened, British critics predicted it would not last more than a few weeks at most. Indians, living in the UK and visiting from the UK, made them eat humble pie. Steve Wilkinson, who has a background in theatre and whose company Azure has provided development funding for the film, said in Cannes: While every production has an inherently uncertain outcome in the marketplace, Bombay Dreams, with its amazing musical pedigree and an award-winning production team, has a chance of becoming one of the great musical films of the decade. It is worth recalling Lloyd Webber's tart reaction when a Hindutva type asked him why he had not called his musical Mumbai Dreams. Mumbai Dreams has no music, he shot back. http://www.telegraphindia.com/1100519/jsp/frontpage/story_12464861.jsp
