[arr] Rahman, the most downloaded Indian artist

2010-06-01 Thread Siddiq Rahman
Rahman,the most downloaded Indian artist
Britain
has become the top country to download Bollywood music abroad while AR Rahman
has been declared the most downloaded Indian artist, according to a new
research .

Bollywood tracks have found particular favour with
listeners in Britain, where over one in four tracks downloaded is a Bollywood
song. Following suit in the downloading department are Singaporeans at the
second spot, who are responsible for nearly a third (31 per cent) of all Indian
music downloads outside India. While Finland and Germany occupy the third and
fourth slots respectively, Australian music fans account for a fifth of the
global total.

The UAE, South Africa, Switzerland, Mexico and Russia
round off the top 10 respectively. In India, Bollywood songs represent over half
of all downloaded tracks (54 per cent), with western pop and ghazal next in
line. Among Indian artistes, Oscar-award winning music composer AR Rahman leads
the way as the world’s most downloaded Indian artiste. He is followed in
popularity by playback singer Sonu Nigam, JoJo, Himesh Reshammiya and Shaan.

Udit Narayan, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar and Salim-Sulaiman occupy
the rest of the spots in that order. The research was conducted by a mobile
phone company based on the number of downloaded songs across 35 countries until
mid-March 2010.

Gopal ji, I'm not trying to give much importance to the debate of new vs

Without further diverting from the topic, I would like to reiterate that
Karthik has done a marvelous job both in Behne de and Usure Pogadhe and he
deserves all the accolades and credits for a job well done here.

Correct me if I'm wrong but your argument was that Sonu and Sukhwinder
are more deserving singers as compared to Karthik and you believe that they
would done a better job in Behne De. I, for one find it futile to bring Sonu
or Sukhwinder into this picture. Don't get me wrong for I've nothing against
these two great singers but if ARR decided to have Karthik's voice in Behne
De then I'm very sure he has very good reasons for the well-made decision.

For one, there is something very unique about Karthik's voice which makes
him stand far apart from his contemporaries. He has a deep voice which he
uses with great effectiveness. They touch you soul when sung in the low
notes and they give you goose bumps when sung in the high notes. And these
qualities are very much apparent and (judging from the lyrics) essential to
 Behne De and Usure Pogathe.

many projects (national and international, collabs etc.) and hence the
effort to give a song to the most deserving singer (one who is
conversant with the genre and language) - is somewhere getting diluted.
Perhaps you're giving ARR less credit than he deserves. I don't believe
ARR would compromise on the quality of any of his projects in favour for
another. Then again, I don't understand how ARR being overloaded with work
has anything to do with the selection of singers. In any event, Sonu and
Sukhwinder did sing a song each for Raavan. (It was most unfortunate that
Sonu's song got axed but that's not the issue here.) My contention is that
if ARR had wanted Sonu or Sukhwinder or any other singers to sing Behne De,
then he would most certainly have got them to do so. But clearly he wanted
to credit Karthik with this number and it's my humble opinion that ARR has
 made an apt choice here.

Gayathri ji - the debate is not so much about comparing new vs. seasoned

type of song and for that particular language.

To begin with, the number of female singers introduced by ARR is
relatively smaller as compared to the male singers. Nevertheless to answer

 The Road to Brazil
Last year, that all changed. Admittedly, Nepal still does not figure on most
Brazilians’ mental maps. But say anything about India, and you are sure to
get a bright smile and an ‘Aare baba’ or ‘Bhagwan ke liye.’ That this is
hardly the most common Hindi vocabulary is perhaps to be expected,
considering its unusual source: Caminho das Índias, a whirling, colourful
telenovela (soap opera), inspired in no small part by Bollywood
extravaganzas, had Brazilians glued to their televisions from January to
September last year. Singlehandedly, the novela took the Brazil-India
connection from the dry world of the boardroom and beamed it straight into
Brazil’s living rooms.* And the burgeoning relationship did not stop there.
A R Rahman’s tunes suddenly blared in markets and discos, Brazilian woman
sported bindis, and my Brazilian friends all wanted to know if I knew how to
make chai. *

Gautham Menon's latest release*Vinnaithaandi**Varuvaayaa*will complete 100
days run in theatres on Saturday. The movie brings back to theatres the
genre of love stories, something we have not seen on screens for quite some
time.

This bilingual, starring Simbu-Trisha in Tamil and Naga Chaitanya-Samantha
in Telugu, is indeed a memorable experience for its beautiful camerawork by
Manoj Paramahamsa and soul-stirring music by A.R. Rahman. A Red Giant Movies
presentation, the movie is produced by Escape Artistes Motions Pictures and
R.S. Infotainment.

*VTV*, which released on February 26, 2010, has different climaxes in Tamil
and Telugu. The Telugu version, titled *Yemaya Chesave*, ends on a happy
note while the Tamil version has a surprise ending with some twist and
turns.

[arr] Partition revisited

2010-06-01 Thread satish_srini
Mani Ratnam's passionate period film Lajjo, set during the Partition with Aamir
Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead, is all set to be revived.

It was earlier set aside after the songs had been written by Gulzar and
composed by AR Rahman because the budget for a Partition film was considered
prohibitive.

But now with Aamir and Kareena's jodi in 3 Idiots proving to be a rage, there
were discussions with Mani to look into the project again. According to a
source, Mani plans to go into Lajjo before he begins his film with Ranbir
Kapoor.

[arr] Musical encounter

2010-06-01 Thread satish_srini
Music maestro AR Rahman is all geared up for his world tour `AR Rahman Jai Ho
concert'. It kicks off on June 11 in New York at the famous Nassau Coliseum
arena.

When Rahman was amidst rehearsals at Washington DC, he received some very
special visitors - they were Michael Jackson's elder brother Jermaine and his
son, Prince Michael Jackson.

A source reveals, Rahman was practicing for his upcoming concert at Patriot
Centre and by a coincidence, Jermaine and Prince were rehearsing in an
adjoining hall at the same venue.

As soon as they learnt about Rahman's presence, they decided to pay him a
visit. The late pop star's son Prince told Rahman that he loved Jai Ho. Rahman
immediately extended a personal invitation to the Jackson family to attend his
concert.

Rahman, a self–confessed fan of Michael Jackson, had issued a very emotional
statement following the pop legend's untimely demise. Michael's family, by
extension, holds an equally special place in Rahman's heart.

Elaborating on the special bond between Rahman and Michael, our source adds,
Not many people know that when Rahman won the Oscar, Michael Jackson had
personally called to congratulate him and invite him for lunch where he
introduced Rahman to his family and three children.

The King of Pop liked the Jai Ho track so much that he had expressed a desire
to work with Rahman.

He had specifically liked the chord arrangement of the Oscar-winning song.
Subsequently, Rahman made several trips to Los Angeles, but destiny had other
plans.

Rahman, who is currently in LA, confirms, Yes I had a chance meeting with
Jermaine Jackson in Washington DC during the time I was rehearsing there. We
exchanged pleasantries.

Music of Pappu movie was launched at a packed Prasad Labs on the night
of 30 May. This film stars Krishnudu, Subbaraju and Deepika in the
main leads. Praveen Reddy Nalla and Nagesh Yada jointly produce this
movie on Aarya entertainments banner in the direction of Sapan
Pasuparthi. The guests who made it to the function include C Kalyan,
Madhu Yashki, Madan Mohan, Nani, Navadeep, Varun Sandesh, Sundeep
Kishan, Krishnudu, Subbaraju, Deepika, music director Phani Kalyan,
Sapan Pasuparthy, Parthu, Deva Katta, TS Krishna Rao, Nalla pratap
Reddy, PV Ashok, G Srinivasa Reddy, Siva Reddy, Ambika Krishna, Gundu
Hanmantha Rao, Praveen Reddy and Nagesh Yada.

C Kalyan launched the audiocassette and gave the first unit to
Navadeep. Madhu Yashki launched the audio CD and gave the first unit
 to Nani.

Madhu Yashki said, “Title of the movie is different. Our meal is not
complete without Pappu. I will buy the ticket and will watch the
movie. I have protested against some movies in the past due to
Telangana movement. I will support movies after AP is divided into two
states. I want this movie to become a big hit.”

Navadeep said, “I liked the trailers and songs. I am eagerly waiting
for the release of this movie. New music director came up with a good
work. Krishnudu seems to have worked really hard for Pappu.”

Ambika Krishna said, “Producer Nagesh Yada is a good friend of me.
Pappu is a healthy title and purely a vegetarian one. A hero like
Krishnudu will make pot-bellied people like us proud. I am expecting
this movie to become a big hit.”

Deva Katta said, “The poster of Pappu reminds me of Pappu, Neyyi and
Avakai through the characters of Krishnudu, Deepika and Subba Raju.”

Subbaraju said, “When the producers narrated the story to me, I
suggested that the producer Praveen Reddy should do my character
because he is so handsome. Another producer Nagesh Yada is also a good
singer and dancer. All songs in this film are excellent.”

Krishnudu said, “I did a small role in Navadeep’s Modati Cinema. I
worked for most of the upcoming heroes in the film industry. Director
Sapan is a good director. I listened to many scripts and liked this
story. It is a heart touching story. Subbaraju was my roommate when I
was searching for film opportunities. I find to be exciting to work
with him in this movie. My character in this movie offers lot of
 variety.”

Deepika said, “This is my first movie. I am feeling happy to make my
debut through a different movie like Pappu. I would like to thank the
producers and director for giving me this opportunity.”

Music director Phani Kalyan said, “I had been a great fan of AR Rahman
since my childhood. I was a software engineer. I resigned my job and
joined AR Rahman’s music institute in Chennai. I happened to meet the
makers of Pappu through my friends. They listened to my 30 seconds
demo and selected me as a music director. My mother and my
grandparents role is very vital in my career.”

Director Sapan said, “I penned this story when was working in the
direction department of Ashta Chemma movie. I saw Vinayakudu movie and
decided that Krishnudu is my hero. He is a director’s hero and he did
a terrific work. Subbaraju is a talented actor and a good human being.
He will become a good hero in the time to come. USA born Deepika is
doing female lead and Kashmir guy Junaid is making his debut in
negative role. I feel very lucky to get a music director like Phani
Kalyan. Producers of this movie are like my brothers. I extremely
fortunate to get producers like these. We worked in such a way that
there is no editing wastage. Pappu is going to release on 18 of June
and I hope that it will be successful.

[arr] Mani's next is a remake of Subhash Ghai's film

2010-06-01 Thread Triply R.
Word making rounds is that Mani Ratnam's next film is a remake of a Subhash
Ghai hit.

The story is rumored to be a conflict between a police officer and a criminal,
who kidnaps the police officer's sweetheart and takes her on a rough journey,
as the police officer tries to retrieve her and arrest the criminal.

The main difference in the story is rumored to be the ending. The Subhash Ghai
movie turns out with the lady taming the criminal as he swears her chastity in
an open court, thereby vindicating her. However, the Mani Ratnam version
supposedly twists this such that when the police officer questions his
sweetheart's chastity, she rejects him outright and goes back to the criminal.

When contacted regarding this, no one was willing to talk about Mani Ratnam's
movie. A close source said no one should say anything about Mani's movies. If
anyone whispers even a clue about the story, an ancient curse, from the time of
the Satiyuga vapourises the person and no trace of the person is ever found
again. Rumor has it that this curse affected an actress who has a role in the
movie when she leaked the ending of the movie. No sooner did she breathe about
the movie that she was involved in a scandal all over the news and was forced
into hiding for a long time.

A spokesperson from Mukhta Arts released the following statement directly from
Subash Ghai - The Mani the Ratnam is the remaking the one of the my hits. I
encourage such a brave attempt from the one of the best the director's of the
India. If the movie has the music by the A R Rahman, my the blessings will the
be increased by the ten-fold.

The Ghai movie in question most likely seems to be Khal Nayak, but given the
similarity between Ghai's films, this is only hearsay.

In the meantime, people everywhere wait with baited breath for what appears to
be Mani Ratnam's most interesting venture in recent times.

P.S. The curse seems to be true, since once this story was broken,
AintItFakeNews.in and SpoofNews.in were vapourised and all proof of the
existance of the sites were wiped out from this world. Your brave reporter only
survived due to the annonymity that the Internet offers.

[arr] Project Rahman: Completed!

2010-06-01 Thread Triply R.
Imagine that you buy a new Rahman album. You get hyper-excited to put the thing
into your player and just soak it in. You want to put it on repeat for a 100
times, hear every instrument that is played, hear every note that is played and
find everything the album has to offer.

That is what I felt like doing when I bought Raavan (and Raavanan). But then I
suddenly thought, instead of listening to one album a 100 times, why don't I
listen to a 100 different Rahman albums once? And that set me off to go back to
the beginning and revisit every Rahman album! To do this, I set some criteria:

1. Only original albums in their original languages (Yodha, not Asokan. Pudhiya
Mugam, not Padmavyuham).
2. Original songs on dubbed/ re-used albums (extra song from Sapnay, extra
songs in Saathiya, Star, Alli Arjuna, Nayak etc.)
3. Unreleased songs available in other places (Hyderabad Airport theme song, O
Bosnia, We Can Make it Better, etc.)
4. Non-film albums (Vande Mataram, Jana Gana Mana, Pray For Me Brother, new
song in Connections etc.)
5. Miscellaneous singles (Raga's Dance by Venessa Mae, Marhaba Mustapha etc.)
6. All available soundtracks of foreign projects (Bombay Dreams, Warriors of
Heaven and Earth, The Lord of the Rings) and non-available ones, if possible
(Provoked and The Passage)
6. Only A R Rahman albums, no Dileep Kumar albums (so no Deen Isai Maalai,
Fantasy/ Andhmaalai, Set Me Free, Colours)

With these rules, I dug up all my CDs of Rahman and put them into iTunes. Next,
I dug up the backups I had made of my cassettes onto CDs, since there are quite
a few early albums I don't have on CD as I couldn't afford to buy them back
then. I put all of them onto iTunes as well. That gave me almost the complete
Rahman discography on iTunes (the one song I really was missing was Zindagi Se
Pyar Karo, since I didn't find my video cassette recording of the broadcast).
I then transferred these songs onto my iPhone and started my journey...

I must say that it was absolutely incredible. I found old lost gems (Uzhavan)
again, found that I enjoyed some albums more now than before (Vandicholai
Chinarasu, Gang Master), found that I still didn't like all the songs on some
albums (Pudhiya Mannargal, Tenali, Super Police), found the classics as great
as ever (Roja, Thiruda Thiruda, Duet, Bombay, Iruvar, Kandukondein
Kandukondein, En Swaasa Kaatrey), still loved the albums I was always partial
to (Love Birds, Mr. Romeo, Kaadal Desam, Indira), still found albums that were
flawed (Paarthale Paravasam), still wished some albums had more justice done to
them (Kaadal Virus, Blue) still found some albums over-produced (Godfather,
Anbae Aaruyire)...
It took me 7 days to finish my journey, listening at over 100 songs a day! The
last day was capped with listening to Raavan and Raavanan, followed by the
Tamil anthem. Raavan sounded so much like a natural progression in the journey.
I was so glad that I had done this... gave me a sense of achievement, even
though it was a vicarious pleasure!

I really wish Rahman had the time to take the journey as well. It would be
great if he could revisit all his music when he writes his autobiography. He
really needs to look back at those times when Shahul Hameed (RIP) brought a
nice rustic touch to his albums and when Chitra was flawless in every outing
with him... he needs to go back and see how versatile he always was and how his
albums were so special... go there and back again... he made classics then and
he is still making classics now.

It's amazing how his music changed and yet excelled. It's also amazing to
discover how my taste has changed, but how some things never change, like my
love for his music.

If there is one thing I really have to complain about, it is the lack of the
rustic, folk albums now. There was a time when I felt that the ARR-Bharathiraja
combination was the best one, with Kizhakku Cheemayile, Karuthamma,
Andhimantaarai and Taj Mahal. I felt that the combo was slightly tarnished with
Kangalal Khaidu Sei. It's a pity they didn't work together after that. But that
is just a small complaint. The rustic is back with a twist in Raavan and Rahman
is still making the most interesting music in India. Maybe another 10 albums
later, I will take the journey again. In the meantime, it's time for me to
listen to Raavan a 100 times. I am lagging behind everybody on this group right
now, so time to catch up!
