WellIam sorry vithur bro But I must say that the CLASSY
work done in YODHA cannot be replicated by anyone else even after 100 YEARS!!
The BACKGROUND SCORE is one among ARR's BESTS.

Now the Sequel has come...And Harris scoring music...What a RIDICULOUS
CHOICE!!
There are hundreds of other movies through which Harris can make his Malayalam
Debut But why YODHA-2???

As an ARR fan, I feel HUMILIATED..

The latest news is that, the sequel to YODHA, YODHA-2 is having Harris Jayaraj
as the composer. This prestigious project will mark his debut in Malayalam.

The composer himself disclosed about the project, to Cochin Metro (The Hindu)
when he was in Kochi last week: http://www.hindu. com/mp/2008/ 08/25/stories/

As a TRUE ARR fan, Iam strongly AGAINST IT!!! Such a BIG PRESTIGIOUS PROJECT,
requires GLOBAL MUSIC like that ARR gave 14 years back... It is NOT a project
for a MONOTONOUS HARRIS It requires a VERSATILE composer...

SHANKAR-EHSAAN- LOY would be a better choice And they would JUMP immediatly
and take the offer, as they BADLY want to start their Malayalam career with a
MAMMOOTTY or MOHANLAL movie... Recently the TRIO was replaced by HIT CHURNER
RahulRaj, in the MAMMOOTTY starrer MAYA BAZAAR.  Rahulraj, addressed as
GOLDEN COMPOSER  has been churning HITS after HITS with his with his
proficiency over a variety of GENRES in world music.

To know more about Rahulraj: http://en.wikipedia .org/wiki/ Rahulraj

Guys... Post your opinions on how the MUSIC of  YODHA-2 would be , if HARRIS
scores it
Dont IGNORE this.. Its a PRESTIGE issue for us, ARR FANS... Someone like HARRIS
being the SUCCESSOR of RAHMANJI in the MEGAPROJECT Yodha-2!! RIDICULOUS!! !!

JTYJN! ...a mediocre score... what happen man...its ruling charts

 - - - Hi,
Its true, ARR had deviated a lt from common flocks( but he proved he can be
the very old same ARR thru his scroes in ATM which still hits the charts of
FM , tv's as Dailertones) .Its true, no doubt  that all music lovers
consider ARR as god ,but what I am stronly against is for the blind praise or
upraisal for mediocre scores or albums like ADA,JTYN,Sakarakati etc.Well, HJ is
not  the only person who creates some catchy numbers, there are many like
Yuvan, srikanth,Jousha, Himesh,Sajid  etc etc( but many of thier songs are ' a
true lift' from english and arabic albums). This is my personal comment with
full respect to our Boss, above all there is no space here in this sub continent
to rate  with ARR .

Guys,

Let's have an insight into our music tastes. Go deep into the psyche ad come
out with one song you consider to be purely divine in nature. It could be any
song and it is also very personal. Often Rahman says that the song comes from
above and that he is just an instrument. So let me start of this discussion
with my personal favourite

MUNBE VAA ( SILLUNU ORU KADHAL )

I know it is many of your favourites. Well, it is not mine. It is not just my
favourite, rather i would say it is my lifeline. The more I listen to this
song, the more I feel rejuvenated. Till today I consider this song straight
from heavens where I imagine the gandharvas playing in the skies and that
Rahman has brought this for the earthlings. No matter how much I write about
this song, I feel empty. I like to speak about this song, listen to this song
and devour this brilliance. Last week a north Indian friend of mine comes up to
me and asks for this song. Being a bit possessive about this song, I was
reluctant to share in the beginning. But the divine nature of this song caught
up in me and pushed me into passing the song to him. Such is the power of this
song. My friend, who doesnt have any idea of tamil, is taken aback by the
composition. I am only glad to exlplain the lyrics and the situation in the
movie. I am blessed

Thanks

Sujith

   Music Review of Jodha Akbar

Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah - Mohammed Aslam, Bony Chakravarthy
Chorus

After seeing the stills of Aishwarya and Hrithik in royal costumes,
listening to this song immediately, I was in awe of how brilliantly
Rahman has captured the greatness and grandeur of the Mughal king and
the era in his music! This is the song which sits in heart instantly.
I loved the chorus and the way the female voices join the male voices
and the male voices with the female in the second part of the song, in
a beautiful humming . With the wonderful beats throughout the song,
this song becomes an aural treat. There is a line in this song about
the greatness of Akbar - Jitna kahe hum, utna kam hai †The same
can be said about this song and the greatness of Rahman’s music!

   Jashn-E-Bahaaraa - Javed Ali

This is a soft, lovely song that is completely in contrast to
Azeem-O-Shaan. When I listened to this song first (in the trailer), I
didn’t like Javed Ali’s voice that much. Now, after listening to
the full song so many times, my opinion has changed and I find his
voice so well suited for this song.

   Jashn-E-Bahaaraa (Instrumental - Flute)

I love the flute. I am so happy that Rahman chose to release the
instrumental version of the full song. If you liked the lyrics of
Jashn-E-Bahaara and felt that you were able to relate to the mood of
the song all the more because of the lyrics and the rendition of it by
Javed Ali, then listen to this one that is sans lyrics. With music
like this one, you need no lyrics.

Inn Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein - Sonu Nigam Madhushree

Sonu Nigam’s voice always adds more beauty to a song, however
good or bad it might be. The song starts with Sonu Nigam singing it so
softly with soft beats and instruments in the background. You get
completely immersed in it when all of a sudden you hear the chorus
singing accompanied by some amazing percussion and then there is Sonu
again! Wow! I loved the interlude between Sonu Nigam’s and
Madhushree’s part. As Madhushree starts singing, I noticed that the
lyrics didn’t have any (or many?) Urdu words. Since Jodha was a
Rajput, there is no Urdu? If Madhushree’s voice sounded sweet when
she sings those beautiful lines, what can you say about the part sung
  by Sonu Nigam that follows?!

Mere khwaabon ke iss gulistaan mein,

Tumse hee toh bahaar chhaayi hai,

Phoolon mein rang mere the lekin,

Inn mein Khushboo tumhee se aayi hain..

Rahman’s music, Sonu Nigam’s voice or Javed Akhtar’s lyrics?
You can’t pinpoint on one of these and say this is what makes these
lines sound so lovely! I wouldn’t have minded if the song had ended
right there but we are treated to the chorus and Sonu Nigam’s voice
  once

the full song so many times, my opinion has changed and I find his
voice so well suited for this song.

I wouldn’t have minded if the song had ended
right there but we are treated to the chorus and Sonu Nigam’s voice
once again and by the time the song ends, I just can’t have enough
of it and end up listening to the song in a loop.

 Mann Mohanaa - Bela Shende

Like many others, I too initially didn’t like this song that much
and felt it to be too sad and too long. But it always takes time to
get the feel of such songs. And as I listened to it carefully , i
heard some tabla, some string instrument playing in the background,
flute comes here and there and at one such instance, Bela’s voice
follows it with the words, Bansi ban jaaungi - beautiful! This is the
only song in the movie that doesn’t use too much of Urdu I was
able to enjoy the lyrics

I have been waiting for what seems like eons to finally listen to the
music of Jodha Akbar. From the very beginning when I first heard of
the project, being a period film with Ashutosh as director, I
surmised and hoped that Rahman's best would be tapped once more. I
honestly feel that Rahman's best was not tapped in his recent Hindi
or Tamil efforts, but that is another debate (not that I don't enjoy
his latest offerings). I have been very vocal about JA recently, not
only because of all the delays (I needed to vent!), but also due to
cautious excitement in believing that something very special was
about to be delivered by our Boss. Like with all ARR albums, this
album has yet to fully absorb itself within my psyche as it's just in
its infancy of release. Here are my opinions on each track as I have
formed until now, possibly subject to some modification over time,
but likely to stick at its core

 1) Azeem O Shaan - Song spells grandeur and pomp. Like the loopy,
punchy rhythm with some variations in between. Incredible use of
drums, percussion as Shivamani has outdone himself. Of particular
amazement if use of the the Japanese sword sound and rhythms in the
second interlude. That is so awesome. I like the chorus overdubs too.
However, I found the track overall a bit musically dry with little
musical interludes and emphasis more on rhythm, which may be
appropriate for the film situation. My least favorite track
 relatively. (7/10)

 2) Jashne Bahaar - Love the use of the Oud throughout this
beautifully crafted and melodically simple track. Simple, but
brilliant and heartwarming melody rendered to perfection by Javed
Ali, who has sung his best song to date with this in all
probability. I like his strong, clear voice a lot and he sings with
good emotional strength. Love the intense Santoor flurry at the end
of the first musical interlude preceded by a melodically beautiful
Oud solo. Rahman has used beautiful synth warm pads with soft
strings to create a texturally delicious aural backdrop and
soundscape to the song with his vintage trademark of delicate chord
 sequences. 8/10

 3) Khwaja Mere Khwaja - Wah! Kya Baat Hai Rahman Saab!!! I have
never heard Rahman sing in such pure classical form during his
frequent alaaps. Though we have heard him run away with sargams in
other tracks, he has delved into the heavier side of classical
singing with this piece de resistance of a track. The song builds so
beautifully beginning with harmonium and alaap, transitioning to the
chordal piano loop, eventually to tabla with madham khayal (medium
tempo) to drut khayal (fast tempo at the end). Love the claps on the
downbeat rhythms. Last but not least, what an amazing musical
interlude as Rahman changes raagas from Alaya Bilawal to Kalingda
with use of what sounds like a flute and oboe combined. Gives the
interlude a strong middle eastern, moghul flavor. Rahman uses the
same interlude melody overlayed during the song's final stanzas with
amazing harmonization that only a musical genius can accomplish.
Mindblowing track sung with great passion and devotional love.
 (10/10)

 4) In Lamhon Ke - Such a dynamic track, unusual in structure without
sounding too experimental. Incredible singing by Sonu and Madhushree
with breath-taking melodies. Arrangement wise, there is too much
going on for me to get into detail here. There are so many beautiful
ornamental touches throughout the song with flute and santoor weaving
in and out to create one of the most beautiful aural tapestries. The
first interlude is mindblowing with heavy chorus rendering fast
taranas in raaga Desh followed by a heavy and dramatic antara with
raaga Kirwani following a crescending melodic contour with eventual
denuvement back to the main melodic theme. I wish the sitar piece in
the second interlude was longer and more elaborated as it just teased
a bit before Madhushree joins. She sings her part with such
sweetness and smoothness with incredible melodic lilt. (9/10)

5)Man Mohanna - When I first heard that there was going to be a
Bhajan, I was very happy as I loved the previous two Bhajans from
Lagaan and Swades. This track totally blew me away with its intense
devotional rendering by Bela Shende and heavy classical style of
singing which is performed to perfection in raaga Mishra Bhairavi.
I've said before that I'm a sucker for semi classical forms of music
and to me, nobody does it better today than Rahman in film
compositions. The instrumental interludes with flute and strings
create some of the most haunting and expansive sounds and melodies
we've heard from Rahman in a long time. The thythms are so
beautifully crafted with tabla and ghattam? moving along a steady

I had to dedicate two hours for penning this review. I appreciate
those who
take time to go through this. Thanks.

First things first: ARR is doing re-recording/BGM for ATM. It's
confirmed
from reliable sources. Don't keep on spreading rumors. Rather, start
 spreading this information.

Understand the reality: You cannot have ATM songs in a movie like
Boys and
the vice versa is also not possible. ARR has come up with some working
numbers to suit the image of a hero who has the potential to hit
deep. So,
free your mind and enjoy the songs given by the musical genius.

A bit of history- The lesson learnt: Till 2001, if an ARR song
doesn't catch
me instantly, I used to keep rambling like many in this group (!). I
remember how bad I felt about mudhalvan songs initally. Later I
realized how
those songs grew in me. Similar case happened with Alaipayuthey. I never
liked yaaro yaarodi, evano oruvan. But later, I realized how ARRs song
create a swinging shift thereby making someone to rethink what
he/she has
thought about it initially. Okay there you go! That's ARR for you. I
made
something firm in me. i.e. Not to take any quick decisions for ARR
albums.
This strategy has worked great for me. For example, I never liked tu
bin and
lukka chuppi from RDB initially but I believed that ARR's song will
grow in
me. Later I felt that lukka chuppi is a gem of a song and tu bin
bataye a
 golden gift from ARR.

Bottom line: Accept ARRs songs as it comes and it will definitely strike
gold in you simply because, music from ARR is not a result of ARRs
work but
ARRs blood. A man who has dedicated his life to music and a man who
has the
courage to experiment new sounds and genre of music. A simple
example: When
did rap become famous in regional movies? Only after ARR bought rap
stuff in
 alai payuthe.

Okay, lets dive into the subject of this mail.

 ATM Review:

After Laggan, all songs in an ARR album have caught me instantly
only in ATM
i.e. m hearing all songs without skipping from day 1.

My pick of the album: Merlyn Monroe (just a shade sweeter than all
the other
 magnificent songs in the album)

 Album rating: 10/10.

Bottomline: A versatile Rahman in show. ARR makes music sound easy
but it is
not easy. ATM has a bunch of complex compositions. Kudos to all
lyricists.

   *Ellapugazhum*

 Brilliance of ARR

ARR's voice and rendition; Great and mesmerizing. ARR adds life to
the song

The use of electric guitar - that's ARR for you

Magnificent use of chords that pump the adrenalin (sample 4:02 - 4:10)

The way the song ends.. Scintillating!

Reverberating chiming section throughout the song - ARRs mind in play

Constant energy-sprinkling percussion which sounds great in 5.1

 *Merlyn Monroe*

 Brilliance of ARR

 Stylish Stylish Stylish

The way the song begins is too sexy. LOVE IT!

Notice that there are *NO* percussion in this song. Just the chiming
sounds
with bass guitar does the trick for the song. That's ARR for you again

Amazing additional programming. High-tech sounds embellish the song

Casual rendition by male singer and female voice getting quite squeaky..
This balance has worked out great in the song

Mesmerizing male and female alaaps. A

 complex song to execute.

 *Valayapatti*

 Brilliance of ARR

Check out different layers in the song. All unique but very tough to
compose

Raaga and corresponding alaap. Just magnificient! Come on, could anyone
merge both folk and carnatic genre?? Only ARR can handle it so
professionally. Result: A magnificient song like this

Use of nathaswaram.. ARR makes even that instrument sound so pleasant to
 hear.

The connection between both charanam and pallavi is too good. Folk +
carnatic + percussion alaap (dheem thanaku dheem)

Use of bass guitar and making it play all along when the raaga alaap is
 rendered. This is vintage ARR.

Use of Naresh and madhumitha is commendable

 *Kelamal*

 Brilliance of ARR

Only ARR can handle melodies like munbae vaa, kaatril(from GF) and a
song
like this.. All are melodies but fall info different percussion
genre. Just
 awesome.

Ketu rasitha padal ondrai bit is amazing and mesmerizing. An alternate
version of it in the middle of the song is just scintillating

Singer selection has again worked out beautifully for ARR.

The song decorated by various versions of chiming sounds

Kokilam Kokilam bit is very much hummable.

A simple percussion handled so professionally to suit a melody like this

 *Maduraiku*

 Brilliance of ARR

Again, the instrument melam sounds professional when ARR uses it. This
aspect as always been very unique for ARR. He does something to
make the
instruments and singers voice to suit the mood of the song. That's the
 brilliance of ARR

Song beginning is very catchy and suits village

[arr] The magic of A R Rahman

2007-07-30 Thread Aparna
Here's my latest blog post:

I recently transferred some of my favourite songs that I haven't
listened to for quite sometime, to my mobile. So, I have almost
stopped listening to radio now. The next three paras of this post is
what I typed in my mobile as a message when I was travelling home from
work after I pressed the play button in the music player with the
random option turned on. :)

As the bus travels down the East Coast Road at God-knows-what speed, I
am enjoying my journey listening to Rahman's songs. :) Pachchai
KiLigaL - I am listening to it after a long time. I love everything
about it - the humming in the beginning, lovely lines like `naan
innoru piravi unnai petraal innum aanandam', the interlude/music at
around 2 minutes.

Munching a Dairy Milk Eclairs, listening to Jiya Jale ( wonderful
beats and flute interludes :) ), cool breeze caressing my face
(surprisingly the person sitting next to me has allowed me to keep the
window fully open!), pachai kiLigaL ending and MalargaLe playing next
and the beats in the song starting just as I finish typing the
previous line, I am loving every minute of the bus ride! :) I got into
the bus feeling a bit tired but now I feel as though my energy level
has shot up ten times! :)

As though in sync with my mood, the next song is Akkadanu naanga! Wow!
The next one - Andha Arabic! Is there anything better than Rahman
himself lending his voice to his own music? ;) Dil Se Re! Oh my God!
It feels as though Rahman himself wanted to cheer me up and stop
feeling tired! :D It hasn't stopped yet. Doubling up my happiness is
the song Sevvanam now! :)

Just as my stop was nearing, Thee Thee started and I had to stop the
song midway and get down from the bus. :( But, how can I even imagine
sleeping without listening to Thee Thee after listening to it halfway?
;) After listening to Thee Thee, Aayo Re Sakhi and Vasishnava Janato,
I am now listening to veLLai pookaL. :) Who's in a mood to sleep now
when all one wants to do is listen to Rahman's songs again and again
and again :)

Cheers,
Aparna
