How does ARR even manage to come up with a tune and song structure like this? The more I hear this song - the more intriguing it gets Geniusss !! Just this song itself is worth it's weight in Gold !!! I have to get past this song to appreciate the rest of the album :-) -A

I believe others' success should also reflect on your face. And I've learnt one thing - If someone, who has always done his best for you, suddenly starts scolding you or behaves badly - try to remember the good things that he had earlier done for you! But, when the two met after the controversy, wasn't there negativity in the air? Not at all! In fact, I asked Rahman where's my biryani and both of us sat down and ate a hearty meal! We did Raavan after that, and will soon work on another project too. Rahman is a living saint, who can't do anything negative! But, there's a virus in his hermitage, which is not from the musical world. If that virus is not checked in time, it may just corrode his work. Ryaaz -- www.gomzyphotography.com

The question or the point here is not about ARR. Please stop turning every post here into a fanatical display of ARR worship and meaningless comparisons. There is and there never might be anyone like ARR ever - but that doesn't and shouldn't stop us from opening ourselves and appreciating other good efforts. Re: [arr] What makes ARR great ? My perspective
A very well written piece Ram. Very well analyzed and presented. And agree whole heartedly with each and every point. Sent from my iPhone On Feb 2, 2010, at 3:46 PM, Ram Motipally ram.motipa...@gmail.com wrote: Friends, Spurred on by this article, I have put down some of my thoughts on why I think ARR is the great man and musician that he is. This is a thought process which has developed over the last 18 years that I have been listening to his music and following him in the media. A few disclaimers upfront, I have no music background and unlike some people in this group have not met ARR or worked with him etc. So my perspective is purely from the outside. 1) Natural ability: He is a musical genius and this is the first ingredient. This is a god-given gift and there is no other explanation for the same. 2) Intelligence and Emotional intelligence: ARR is a very intelligent man, he comes across as someone very thoughtful and measured. This is then accentuated by his emotional intelligence. Why is this critical ? - ARR composes music primarily for movies, this means his music sense has to combine with a Director's vision of the movie and the two must match. Only then will the music truly capture the essence and emotion of the movie. Even the great Ennio Morricone talks about this as the bedrock of his success. ARR' ability to feel the emotion and convert it to music is exceptional, whatever be the emotion - love, compassion, anger, happiness, etc. 3) Ability and Passion to be world-class: This again comes from his natural intelligence. He Ping (director of warriors of heaven and earth) described ARR's music to this effect - ARR blends western instruments/music with eastern (indian) melody and creates a sound that is unique only to him. To do this in itself is being a world- class thought leader in music. But even more unique is to do it in the early 90s meant ARR was being world-class even before the world knew what it meant. He was defining a new sense of great in music no past definition of greatness. This is belief in one's self. 4) Constant urge and Passion for learning and innovation: ARR never rests with what he knows. He constantly seems to want to do more and better. Infact from the interviews, what I could glean was that Danny Boyle approached him only for a background score on Slumdog millionaire. ARR convinced him to listen to some of the songs for the movie. Danny again tells him no cellos. Which meant he did not want any emotional or melodious songs. Now ARR's strength is this kind of music. But he takes it on as a challenge and gives Danny the edgy/rough kind of score that he wanted at the same time retaining the ARR essence. And then he wins all these awards. Even ARR will say, he did not foresee all this, but his unique ability to push the edge of his ability and comfort zone has brought this glory. Same thing with RDB - the song lukka chuppi was purely ARR's idea and he naughtily admits that he did it to fulfill a long dream to sing with Lataji. But when the music was done and the movie is watched, that song captures the essence of the movie in a way that is very unique. It is very rare to see anyone push the possibilities so consistently and so well. Numerous such examples be found on this topic. 5) Childlike enthusiasm: Hear ARR speak and you can always see a child somewhere. He wants to learn, he wants to do new stuff, he is never content with his achievements. no arrogance for what he has done. Imagine he goes and learns a new instrument like the continuum and then produces amazing music with it. That innocence and constant energy will always give him ideas and open newer frontiers. It is also the same with technology. ARR till date and since he started has always adopted and mastered new technology. That is a sign of learning and growing rather than stagnating. 6) Ability to overcome hardships at a young age: Particularly in one of his interviews with Simi Garewal, ARR talks about the hardships he had to endure while as a kid his family was struggling and they could not afford him to go to school but work and support the family. This itself is stupendous. But, what I find even more impressive is that he is not and has never been bitter about it. He does not have any self-pity. He talks like a child, but there is a very old and wise man inside when he says, thats what I had to do and that is what I did. For people of his genius and intelligence when you add the quality of taking and overcoming hardships at a youn age, that becomes a very potent combination. Everything else in life looks easy. See his interview with simi garewal on youtube if you want to see this aspect of his character. 7) Finally, but most importantly he is a genuine human being: His integrity is beyond question. His concern for well-being of even the smallest of artists

Here's something: His vocals don't cut it. Honestly, it's upsetting to have a legendary composer push himself as a vocalist when there are great singers around. A minor clarification - 'great' does not mean Sukhwinder Singhhttp://buzz18.in.com/celebrity-profile/sukhwinder-singh/2462 . Also, it's obvious Rahman's trying very hard to put himself out there as a vocalist, since he has 'handpicked' songs he has sung on. Percussion is king on *Jiya Se Jiya*, a lovable tune dampened by AR Rahmanhttp://buzz18.in.com/celebrity-profile/ar-rahman/1331's voice right from the start. *Khalballi* is a wonderful example of how some music should released without vocals. Ever wished you could choke someone by just thinking about it? *Meherbaan* from *Ada*'s soundtrack is a classy song. The music is perfect, and after a long time Rahman's voice sounds bearable. Surprisingly, it sounds alright even when he goes higher on this one. *Dil Se *has kick*ss music, there's plenty going on and it all fits right in. For those who long for the Rahman of yore, you'll find some of him in here. *Ek Mohabbat 'Vote For Taj'* is like the other songs on the compilation... well composed. Almost every track is Rahman attempting to show his mellow side, which is terrible for this collection because there's very little here that actually 'connects'. By the time *Pray For Me Brother* comes on, you're ready to toss the CD case at someone just to start a fight out of sheer boredom. The fabulous *Bombay Theme* overshadows everything else on this compilation. Not only has Rahman done the music a huge favour by not singing, but the composition is also excellent. *Bombay Theme* is the only song on this collection that is full of soul. The rest is stuff that will be praised to death because it has Rahman's name on it. The instrumental version of *Pray For Me Brother* sounds better than the original, but may very well be played while you're having free lunch at a wedding. It's pretty pointless to have a *Club Mix* of *Jiya Se Jiya*, and it's even more stupid to make something like that, but then everyone wants to make money, yes? My only beef with Rahman is that his singing is dull. He's bloody good at composing music, and manages to sing with sincerity. But sincerity does not always ensure quality.*'A Journey Through Anthems'*, the CD says, but how many of these tracks can actually be called 'anthems'? Sorry to break it to you, but except for *Bombay Theme*, there is nothing else on this CD that comes close to being an anthem. What use is a compilation that doesn't feature some of the artiste's best work? Is it an attempt at showcasing his lesser known songs? Or is it an effective money-squeezing exercise, considering fanboys will buy it anyway? The biggest question here is, how many musicians who sing about peace and hugs actually care? Do musicians and music labels not know everyone cannot be fooled and some people can actually tell when an artiste is cementing his popularity among the public that doesn't know better? It's really not that hard to recognise a poseur, y'know? *VERDICT* Maybe the best of Rahman's work has been kept aside for future compilations. Neat way of ensuring the cash never stops flowing, but too obvious. And way too pretentious. I bet all your Michael Jacksonhttp://buzz18.in.com/celebrity-profile/michael-jackson/2832 CDs have been dusted, so just continue spinning 'em if you want to listen to songs about peace.
