[arr] Re: Why did Ghai choose Western classical music as the backdrop?
Coz Subhash Ghai is running short of ideas. And as a storyteller, he never was original nor has he matured with time. 'Yuvraaj' is supposed to be a rip off of the hollywood classic 'Amadeus' (based on western classical music) and Ghai is the last the one to bend the genre and convert it to Indian classical. The same movie was adapted a year ago in a lousy way by some filmmaker in the form of a disaster called 'Shaka laka boom' with horrifying music. But what's laudable about Ghai is his music sense. Even his last outing in 'Black White' had great numbers by Sukhwinder. So with Rahman re-uniting full fledgedly with Ghai in 'Yuvraaj' ('Kisna' seemed like a compromise...with both of them struggling to sort time to work together) fireworks are bound to happen! Waiting for the album with fingers crossed..! Why did Ghai choose Western classical music as the backdrop? Posted by: Chord [EMAIL PROTECTED] purevibz Fri Oct 3, 2008 6:44 pm (PDT) I get it that he wanted to make a movie about music. But, why couldn't he have chosen Indian classical music? From photos and promos, the whole music scene looks Western. Why not make a film with sitar, tabla, sarangi, tanpura, flute, santoor, instead of piano, violin, choirs? This is INDIA afterall. Oh well, director's freedom can't be challenged, but choice of music culture is what I question. I also feel that Ghai tries to be extra glossy and flashy in his films, with recent films testifying to more style and less substance, hence BO failures. Hence, the western classical backdrop is more in line with his flashy, glossy film-making style. Having Indian classical music as a core musical backdrop would be too traditional and in his mind, boring. But, imagine the magic of Rahman's music if he composed for a film based on Indian classical music. Traditional Indian music is ARR's forte, not Western classical, even though he excels in that too.
Re: [arr] Semi-Arr - Pyarelal on current composers and more ...
Yeah Amith, I remember the Chitrahaar Episode where he mentioned about 'Tezaab' song and the other from 'Gambler' (Choodi nahi mera dil hai, SDBurman). I was quite surprised and elated to hear the mention of 'Tezaab' song from Rahman coz its one of my favourite too...! Regarding to his below statement, I think he lacks little open minded approach to today's MDs. I agree with his first sentence that major change in today's music is presentation style. But I don't agree with the second, the main mantra of todays MD's (SEL, VS, Rahman) is putting more emotions and creating mood in the music. That's what bringing them the success and emotional bonding with listeners. The 'sur' and the melody of Hindi film song is same as those of 60s and 70s but the presentation style and the priorities have changed. Nowadays the emotional bonding of the song with the listener is temporary as music directors give more attention to rhythm and beat and lose control over its melody due to the lack of knowledge, says the director. . . . . Ha ha.. the below statement is really ridiculous :) Do you think the Grand music in Lagaan, Taal, WOHE, Bose and some of his best tamil films are prepared in small room.?! .. Naa.. that's just a hypothetical thinking, like most of skeptics did during early days of Rahman's music. But frankly saying Rahman is master in both ways. He did different things as well as things differently. A R Rehman prepares his music sitting in a small room whereas in our times live orchestra used to perform for the recording. [arr] Re:Another big Rahman release (JA).......your expectations?
The music heard in the promos stands as a testimonial to what is to be expected. I have been completely blown out by the music of trailor. So I am sure this time Rahman is in his elements. With Ashutosh and a taut historical in hand, JA should be a dynamite of an album with haunting melodies bringing the mughal era live while you listen. Simply cant wait for the release...Quite charged! Regards Caran
[arr] Concerts and Compositions
What do you think about ARR giving too many concerts in the recent past(the number has increased substantially in the current decade)? Is it restricting his creativity in any sense? The fact remains that a lot of time is channelised for concerts in the form of rehearsals(a coupla months or more for a concert). Apart from the obvious advantages of performing live (monetary and reaching more people), would it be better if he dedicates more time composing music than merely recreating his own scores on stage? Whats your say?
[arr] TWS and the Rahmania!
Well, it must have been a special high for The Wandering Souls on the Saturday night to kick start the most anticipated Rahmania concert. The crowd packed the hall in no time and then began the show. The `Muthu' instrumental introduction could have been more dramatic with high tempo, but it suddenly put brakes. Then the songs started a bit cold as the audience needed some acquaintance with the performers. All the excitement began with the rapping of `O humdum' and the unusual rock of `O yuva'. Soon, `Once more' was the order of the night. There was this moment of revelation when the Sufi medley was churned out and the listeners had a great time lauding the flow that effortlessly bonded the variety of Sufi compositions of Rahman. The script of the show was interesting too, as many would have come to know many of the unknown facts about Rahman and his musical journey. The lead singer Ashutosh was having a ball of time flaunting his vocal range to suit Rahman's spectra of compositions. His rap of `O humdum' or the Alaap of `Tere bina' or the line `Jaise barso mein koi ganga nahaye' from `Yun hi chal', sans his animated expressions, were simply knock out. `Shakalaka baby' was a delight. Thanks to the singer for crooning the song with such aplomb. That was mind blowing. Another mesmerizing piece came from the flautist, who did the `Bombay theme' with full gusto. I would also like to mention that the people on drums, tabla and the sound engineering department, did some great job to the extent that they even nullified any kind of shortcomings. Talking about the misses, one expected some tamil numbers from Rahmans body of work. Anyways, for their genuine efforts, `The Wandering Souls' takes a bow. Next time, I hope they break more rules (of course retaining the soul of music) to go a step further from flat reproduction. It would be a delight to see some personal `TWS' stamp on the brilliant compositions of the maestro. (The Sufi and Patriotic medley were close to it and were enjoyed best by the crowd!) Keep rocking! Caran~

I'm too scared about what will come next. I want to do a raga-based album. As for film songs, I can't lose heart. I'm sure something like 'Umrao Jaan' will come again. I'm also singing for 'Jodha-Akbar' - again For Aishwarya, though I suspect this time the songs will be in the background. She thinks, and says: When you've someone like Aishwarya putting across your voice your singing gets an added lustre. Lataji's mind- blowing songs got the right faces like Meena Kumari and Madhubala. [arr] Re: Rahman should stop scoring music for films ................
I hope you understand that the script of the movie comes first and then the music. Film music is unlike private music albums where the videos are made for the music to sell. So it is upto the director to utilize the songs he has extracted from the music director in a cogent way to complement his story telling. I dont think a video is necessary if a song can speak for itself. Most of the times rahmans music speaks for itself on its own and a good visual is simply icing on the cake. Rahmans involvement in any project goes beyond music and I think he's much more intelligent to pick up the movies and directors whom he can vibe with for some great output. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, hussain [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: well ... honestly when a genius like rahman sits and composes music , we all are aware of the amount of effort and thought he puts into a song and the end result either the song is childishly picturised or wasted as bgm ... rahman ur music is much more valuable and u musnt work with directors who waste ur music. let me give u guys some examples of rahman's best going in vain : 1) lets take ketan mehta to start with ... all of us expected mangal mangal to be one masterpiece in visuals ..all we get are three turbaned goons singing on top of an elephant!! some one plz must notice of this ...rahman..never in ur life will u ever work with ketan again ..this is an order from a die hard fan 2) rahman comes out with an outstanding score for 1947 earth ..and what do we get ...just pieces of it as background samples ... brilliant songs like yeh jo zindagi and raat ki dal dal..as well as banno raani seem wasted ... fine songs slow down the pace of such serious 'cinema' , but honestly i dont give a damn, make full use of the songs or just leave them alone 3) mani sir ..whos probably the best director to picturise songs has also murdered some songs which were wasted as bgms for eg; 1)vellai pookkal 2)e ajnabi and thaiya thaiyya in dilse 3)nenjamellam in aytha ezhuthu but mani sir ..we can forgive cos hes' probably done justice to his music 4)shyam benegal ..i can never pardon for what he did to desh ki mitti and other songs 5) s j suryah who childishly picturises brilliant songs with more of cleavage and lewd actions . 6) rakesh mehra who wasted a gem in lukka chuppi ...everyone is raving about rdb .. but i cried after seeing lukka chuppi being wasted like this... look what he did to roobaruu.!! the only director i respect and admire is : ashutosh gowarikar ..who dosnt mind picturising 7 minute songs!! but i can t forget what he did to aahista again.!! tell me what u feel about this.. long live arr hussain Explore, Experience, Enjoy A.R.Rahman - The Man, The Music, The Magic. [arr] Re: reviewing Khalid Mohammad's review (SPOILERS!!)
That's what I call a brilliant analysis. Right said! Khalid Mohammed deserves this rebuke and I hope it reaches him through some means or the other. His mockery on genuine efforts is worth the censure. Probably deriding others works has given him a name ( or bad name?) which is why his movie bashing, with tremendous lack of analysis, has come up to this extent. I do not know if many feel same about Khalid Mohammed's reviews, but yes, I have always found his reviews biased. His ratings are born out of his whims (else which critic on earth would have given K3G a 5 star rating). Speaking about RDB, symbolism is the crux of the movie and kudos to Rakeysh for using it so skillfully. The climax is a wakeup call for today's youth, who hastily take up decisions, without prior thought or careful analysis of the consequences. The movie speaks volumes without going preachy at the face. Instead it deftly raises many issues faced by the youth and the aged, as we all co-exist under the aegis of the political system. Hence one cannot expect all the questions raised in the flick to be answered literally, frame by frame. If some characters in the movie are direct and honest ( ..sharman), some are shrouded in mystery(..sidharth). So are the various situations and the viewer is given food for thought with each issue being raised. This is the inherent strength of the movie and the director needs to be lauded for his extraordinary effort. Those who still feel that the script was a blunder, please watch the movie again for it may make better sense this time. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Triply R. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This is my rebuke to Khalid Mohammad's review of RDB. Before anyone proceeds, I would request you to read that review first. And this contains major spoilers, so anyone who hasn't seen the movie, read no further!! First, let me start off by saying that Khalid Mohammad is my pet peeve. The die-hard Rahman fan is also a very biased Aamir Khan Movie reviewer. When Khalid used to review movies for Times of India I used to have a thumb rule that if ToI said a movie was bad, it was good and vice versa. It worked like a charm, with exceptions of course. So I was especially interested in reading his view of RDB. I didn't have to wait too long. He put across his view and I offer my take on his view. The thing that strikes you immediately is the flippant way in which the review starts. Usually Khalid reserves his mock statements and his lets try to rhyme and pun routine for movies that are doomed to get a 2 star rating. I personally can't stand flippant reviews, even for movies that I don't like. Reading a review that flows like this one does, for a movie I like, is really painful. But, lets move on to the first part of the review. Khalid starts off with It takes as much guts as madness to do a Rang De Basanti an anti-Authority tract which assigns full marks to wayward youth, and a big round zero to wrinkly-crinkly ministers, politicians and armament wheeler dealers. I agree with this but the latter part of the statement is a generalisation. Sure, the ministers are given a zero, as is Anupam Kher, but the youth are definitely not given full marks. That is the whole idea of the movie. Besides Madhavan, none of the others are really given full marks. Everyone is presented with their flaws. And the ultimate fate of the group further underlines the flaw the youth has. I will get back to that in the end. He then continues with Welcome to India where everyone is looking for excuses to kill one another. Indeed. The first flippant remark we find. While the protagonists of the movie believe that nothing is worth fighting for or dying for in the country, they definitely aren't looking for a reason to kill anyone else. The very attitude they project is live and let live... or maybe live and let die, but the attitude definitely isn't kill them all, let God sort them out. That's writer-director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra badland which is so fiercely feverish that you might need a thermometer to check your fluctuating temperature. I can't even begin to fathom what he is trying to say here. I won't even try to speculate. I will just add it to the flippant-remark-o-meter. At times you're elated by the Mehrathon, at times you're brain boggled. Since this is purely subjective, I will leave it at that. I am sure that many people would find the movie puzzling and/ or frustrating, while others will love it. Aah, it's one of those: a quasi political diatribe which leaves you with conflicting feelings. The flippant-remark-o-meter continues to tick. Again, mixed feeling is purely subjective. I was overwhelmed by the movie and I mean that positively. It touched a cord somewhere. Just as Lagaan touched me as a pure entertainer, this one touched me, but it was something more than just an entertainer. Sure, a lot of nihilistic movies
