[arr] STILL HOT!!!
In it's 10th week, GURU has collected another 10 lakhs and though the numbers may look on a lower side now when compared to its overall total of 41.5 crores +, the fact cannot be denied that after VIVAH it is only GURU that has worked so consistently at the box office over the weeks. The biggest success of 2007 so far, it's total collections would only be challenged by Saif Ali Khan-Rani Mukherjee starrer TA RA RUM PUM which releases late April. From last week's total of 25 lakhs, VIVAH has moved down only by a couple of lakhs which shows a remarkable hold that the film continues to have in the 100 odd cinemas where it is still playing, in spite of entering into it's 20th week. At 31 crores plus, the film is a massive success. source:indiaglitz - Be smarter than spam. See how smart SpamGuard is at giving junk email the boot with the All-new Yahoo! Mail
[arr] stoic silence!!
Shankar's stoic silence! By Moviebuzz | Tuesday, 06 March , 2007, 09:26 There are 40 days left for the release of Rajnikanth's AVM big budget extravaganza Sivaji. However director Shankar has not uttered a word about the release date or anything regarding the film! No press material or even the audio launch of the film has taken place! Shankar believes in the old saying Silence is golden. According to sources close to Shankar, he will speak only when the film is ready for release. The buzz is that graphics and special effects are still to be completed, and re-recording is yet to start. A.R Rahman takes a long time in re-recording, and Shankar too is known to spend days on a single reel! Added to that there are rumours that Shankar and Rahman would prefer doing the work in London, where they will not be disturbed or be under any kind of pressure. Remember Shankar's earlier producer Oscar Ravichandran, kept on announcing the release date of Anniyan, which he had to keep on postponing, as the director was not ready with the final copy! Finally when Shankar was ready, he himself told Ravi to release it on a particular Friday (June 17, 2005). Shankar kept to his lucky number 8 (1+7) and the rest as they say is history, as the film turned out to be a blockbuster! No wonder they call Shankar the Big- P. The perfectionist who provides paisa-vasool movies to the public, but is a pain for the producer! His style of working has been like that from his Gentlemandays and all big banners had to grin and bear it. Shankar is perhaps the most successful commercial film director in India. He has an awesome strike rate of nearly 100 percent at the box-office; all his films have made money for its producers. In a career spanning 14 years he has directed only 7 films in Tamil which literally means a film every two years. It clearly shows the man's sincerity, passion and dedication to his work. For Shankar,Sivajiis special, as it was his dream to do a film with Rajnikanth. A few years back he had written the Muthalvan script keeping the superstar in mind. As a creator he visualizes each and every scene and is particular that what he has in mind be put on celluloid. It is a tight rope walk as Sivaji is concerned, as it is a tough job to balance what his script demands and the superstar's screen image plus the huge expectations from his fans. Actually Shankar has completed the entire shoot of the talkie portion and five songs of the film in 13 months, which is very fast by his standards. After all, at the end of the day it is a Shankar film, and there is a method in his making of the mega budget movie. The onus is on him to make it a blockbuster, and it is not fair to hurry him up. After waiting patiently all these months, a few more weeks to watch Sivaji does not make much difference! - Make free worldwide PC-to-PC calls. Try the new Yahoo! Canada Messenger with Voice
[arr] MAKES MONEY!
Mani makes money! By Moviebuzz | Friday, 02 March , 2007, 13:06 Mani Ratnam's Guru is celebrating 50 days run today. Though Bollywood trade is reluctant to admit that the film is a hit, it is the first hit of the year. Mani has made his Bollywood critics eat crow. They have been saying that he does not understand the Hindi film sentiments and all his straight films in Hindi like Dil Se and Yuva were turkeys at the box-office. Guru made at a cost of approximately Rs 10 Crore by Madras Talkies has grossed nearly Rs 41 Crore from domestic Indian market. And overseas Guru is this year's biggest hit, and is reported to have got a distributors share of Rs 14 Crore! Now that he has proved that he can deliver hits at the Bollywood box-office, people in Mumbai are paying more attention to his next film Lajjo. The film has Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead, with music by A.R Rahman and camera is handled by P.C Sreeram. Mani is now writing the script of the film which will start rolling sometime in September this year. Mani has no immediate plans to direct a Tamil film, as there is more money to be made in Bollywood! WELL OBVIOUSLY GURU IN A BIG HIT IN HINDI ITS ONE OF HTE BIGGEST HITS OF 07 SOO FAR.. Tax sop for Guru in UP IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 08, 2007] Manirathnam has hit the bull's eye with his Guru. The Tamil version of the movie is doing well and the Hindi version has been witnessing a phenomenal collection, doing well in overseas too. Starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in prominent roles, the movie has musical score by Rahman and cinematography by Rajeev Menon. The film is produced and directed by Manirathnam. The movie is loosely based on the life of business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani. As a major shot in arm, Uttar Pradesh government has decided to provide tax-exemption for the movie in their State. UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, a close associate of Amitabh Bachchan, has announced tax-exemption for Guru and that would mean more profits for Manirathnam. - Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. [arr] proves a point
Guru proves a point IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, January 23, 2007] Mani Rathnam has lived up to his reputation of being touted as the country's best director. His Guru, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, has managed to collect huge revenue and also has won the director greater accolades. The Hindi version of Guru opened worldwide last week and has been collecting huge revenue wherever it was screened. Mani Rathnam, considered the master of mixing commercial and mass cinema, is now going places. The director was reportedly approached by a couple of Hollywood production houses to do a film for them, but he meekly rejected those offers. Guru, loosely based on the life of business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani, is expected to win several awards for Mani Rathnam and his team. Abhishek's excellent performance, Rahman's catchy musical score and Rajeev Menons cinematography have been winning appreciations. However, Mani Rathnam is his usual self, ready to commence work for his next movie, Lajjo, starring Aamir Khan. - The best gets better. See why everyone is raving about the All-new Yahoo! Mail.

Chennai box-office - (Jan 12-16 ) This week, it is a five day Pongal special Chennai box-office. It was Pokkiri Pongal all the way. The Vijay starrer took an amazing 97 percent opening from five city theatres in three days and is clearly the number one. The masses are loving it and they are coming back to see it again as Devi and all other theatres screening the film has kept ticket rates at Rs 40 and Rs 30! Mani Ratnam's Guru (Hindi) had a head start over the Tamil films as it was released two days before, is doing roaring business and is at a steady 90 percent. After two days at the Sathyam big screen, it was shifted to a smaller screen to accommodate Ajits Aalwar, but still managed to be at number two due to steady collections. If 2006 ticket rates had prevailed, Guru, would have been in the number one position! At number three is Aalwar which is creating shock waves in the trade. The famous Ajit opening was missing after day-one as the fans were hugely disappointed by the film. Added to that, the film opened in big screens like Sathyam, Sangam,Bharat, Kamala all with 1000 plus seating capacity, which added to its woes. In the fourth position is Vishal's Thamarabharani, which carries mixed reports and could not take an opening due to the biggies. It may pick up if the opposition weakens. Dhanush's Thiruvilayadil Aarambham is still going steady and is in the fifth position. Mani Ratnam, one of the finest directors in mainstream commercial cinema is back with Guru in Hindi and its dubbed version in Tamil. The path-breaking director is one to be admired. He has kept the flag of uncompromised cinema flying against all odds. Mani sir as he is affectionately called by friends, is a film maker whose calling card remains his artistry and intellectual disposition. On the eve of the release of Guru, sitting in his aesthetically done up posh office at Boat Club area in Chennai, casually dressed in a blue jeans and a printed cotton shirt, Mani took time off to speak exclusively to Sify.com. Any pre-release jitters? (Laughs) Not at all. But as a producer like anyone else I am anxious. Guru is getting premiered at Toronto on Thursday (Jan 11) at Elgin and Winter garden theatre centre. It is the place where most Hollywood films are premiered and I think that Guru will be the first Indian film to be premiered there. How different is Guru from your earlier films Guru is my 20th film in a career spanning nearly 24 years. It is the opposite of Yuva, my last release as it is the journey of a single person. The character is shown from his 15 to 70th year. Nayakan was also similar.. Yes to a certain extent, they are in the same genre as far as the concept of a persons life time from youth to old age is depicted. What is the one-line story of Guru? The tagline says it all- Villager, Visionary, Winner. The story is about Gurukanth Desai or Guru, a guy from a village, crossing all obstacles that come his way and how he triumphs against all odds. Just after Independence up to the 70s, the country as a whole was turning to the left of the centre. For a lot of people, it had an old world charm about it. Suddenly Guru comes and shakes the edifice as we see what happened, in the late 70s and 80s. We became individualistic and right of centre. It happened to us before we realize that times have changed. In the film, we see all these changes through the character of Guru. There is an uncanny resemblance to the life and times of late Dhirubhai Ambani the man who changed our system. Please comment It could be anybody. I am definitely trying to connect the character with real life. Why Ambani, it could
[arr] its his BIRTHDAY!!!
Its AR Rahmans birthday today! IndiaGlitz [Saturday, January 06, 2007] AR Rahman, who has captivated millions with his alluring music and restrained voice, has a magical aura about him. He is the perfect example of a man who came, saw and conquered hearts in a jiffy, what with his soul-stirring voice and foot-tapping numbers. Success has not changed Rahman the person so much so that he still attributes all that he has got to the Almighty. His feet are firmly planted on the ground, despite receiving accolades at an international level. The recognition that Rahman received has taken Tamil film music up several levels, for there was a time when Tamil film music was known and listened to by Tamilians alone. Rahman, soon after his success which broke new grounds in contemporary film music, went on to Bollywood and then, as everyone knows, there was no looking back. Music is vocation to some and avocation to many. For AR Rahman, it is not just an occupation. It is his passion and obsession. He thrives and lives on music. Music is, to be precise, a divine force and the guiding spirit for Rahman. We at indiaglitz are proud of Rahman and as we wish him a very happy birthday, we also wish that he wins the coveted Oscar. We are sure that he will continue to do us proud! HEY AR RAHMAN HAPPY BIRTHDAY... THANKS FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE.. FOR MUSIC.. __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! This Abhishek-Aishwarya-Madhavan-Mithun starrer is expected to give the Pongal releases in straight Tamil, a run for their money. The films music is a big draw and the multiplexes are already anticipating this Manirathnam venture. The show to raise funds for the Shakti Foundation will be held on January 11 at 6.30 p.m. at Sathyam Cinemas. The foundation is a Chennai-based NGO that works for the physically-challenged. Chitchat with Mani Ratnam Hyderabad January 2, 2007 Mani Ratnam is in the city to participate in the audio launch of Gurukanth (telugu version of his Hindi film Guru) on the evening of 2 January at the Taj Banjara. He met the scribes for chitchat. Here are the excerpts What is Guru all about? Guru is relevant for today. It also shows the changes taking place in India. It took a year to make this film. There are rumors that Guru is based on the life story of Dhirubhai Ambani. Guru is fiction. It could relate to any entrepreneur who came up in life without any background. Why is it titled as Gurukanth for Telugu version instead of Guru? Due to some local film chamber restrictions. Is Guru a lifetime role for Abhishek Bachchan? It is too early in his career to call any of his roles as lifetime roles. Tell us about the role of Aishwarya Rai She has donned the role of a middle class village girl. You seem to be stuck with AR Rehman We enjoy a good working relationship. He likes my films. I like his music. We are happy. You have the habit of having an item song in every film I enjoy shooting songs. I love narrating the story by giving it some mood with the help of songs. I make sure that all the songs in the film fit that requirement. The item song in this film comes when three Indian bachelors visit a place in Turkey. Is Abhishek Bachchan Aishwarya Rais off-screen compatibility a reason to cast them in lead roles of Guru? No. I cast them because they are good for their respective characters. I do not go by their off-screen relationship. How do you do the casting? I have the script ready first. I look at the character, search for the suitable actor/actress, and approach them. If they also like the characters I offer them, they are signed up. Casting is a two-way thing. It should be good for both sides. There is a rumor that Abhishek requested you to change the date of release from December 2006 to January 2007 because his astrologer predicted good days for him in 2007 No. Even if his astrologer tells him, he would not ask me such favors. The movie release process is completely driven by dynamics, which are not related to the issues you mentioned in any way. Do you like commercial cinema or art cinema? I love commercial films. I make commercial films. At the same time, I make sure that they are sensible, logical and real. I watched films before entering the industry. I know that it is extremely important to connect with the audience while narrating the story. I always keep in my mind that I should connect to the audience while making any film. What is the USP (Unique Selling Point) of Guru? Abhishek Bachchan. He plays a character with a time span of 30 years. He has done wonderful work. When are you going to do a Telugu film again? I will do it when I get the right script. I like making south films because I can make the film deep-rooted and flavored. I have the advantage of pushing the limits when I make south films. You introduced Aishwarya Rai 10 years ago to the film industry and now she acted in Guru. Do you observe any change in her? 10 years back she struggled while speaking in Tamil with me. Now I struggle speaking Hindi with her (giggles). Now she is more mature on the histrionics front. Did you watch any films recently? No. I will start watching films from 13 January 2007. (Guru is releasing on 12 January 2007). What is your next project? It will be a Hindi film titled Lajjo with Kareena Kapoor. __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Guru audio rocks! by galatta November 24, 2006 A.R. Rahman creates magic yet again. Mani Ratnam has evoked some of the maestro Rahmans best musical works in his films and Guru, starring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, R. Madhavan and Vidya Balan, is no exception. The audio of Guru, owned and released by Sony-BMG, has been out in stores since November 18, and the music is simply superb. Like all of ARRs works, this one too takes more than one listen to grow on you, but when you do, you just cant stop listening! Keeping with the flow of the film, which is said to be the dramatisation of Reliances late boss Dhirubhai Ambanis biography, Guru alternates between flowing melodies and period foot-tapping and mischievous beats. Galatta.com ONLY allows LEGAL download and streaming of music, so we will not be giving you any full length tracks from Guru, but check out the superb short clips of the soundtrack on our music channel (www.music.galatta.com ) and go out and buy the audio out in stores NOW. - The best gets better. [arr] biggest rivalry
The biggest musical rivalry in Tamil cinema Tamil cinema music is competitive as never before.Gone are the days of MSV-Ilayaraja Ilayaraja-A.R.Rahman, where it was always a 2 way battle for the top spot.Today ,we see several composers making forays into the music charts with their own syle of music.Tamil music is also a money spinner because of the high prices for audio rights and the craze for Tamil movie music is at an all time high with maximum exposure in music channels and FM radio services. So which music director commands the highest price and who is the hottest in the music charts? Lets take a look at the top four. 4.VIDYASAGAR Starting from Dil,Vidyasagar was on a dream run with a long line of consecutive hits that included,Dhool,Run, Anbae Sivam, Thirumalai,Ghilli, Madhurey, and Ji. He hit the peak of popularity with Chandramukhi that topped music charts. Duringthis period he composed musicfor all the top heroes like Rajini,Kamal,Vijay,Ajith and Vikram. However post Chandramukhi, his run of form has been rather mediocre at best. His compositions for Majaa, Paramasivan and Aadhi had nothing new and were duds in the audio market. But there does seem to be a revival on the cards with Em Mahan, which succeeded commercially and thesongs were also well received.Hisbiggest plus is his soft melodiousnumbers that he dishes out with ease.
