At a quick glance, you have mentioned his Occupation as *Composer, record producer, music director, instrumentalist, arranger, programmer* How about outstanding *Vocalist, Social activist, Entrepreneur*, etc? Couldn't spot his mother. They left before the last song - It was fun to watch ARR suddenly coming on stage wearing some real dark coolers during the Athiradi song looking cool. I could see his wife laughing and waving at him from the audience at this time.. - ARR while introducing the song 'Pray For Me' said that he'll sing this for the rest of his life until there's no poverty in the world and concluded by asking the audience to keep thinking of the song and change the world.. - Hariharan was in his element starting from 'Vaaji' with him mimicking Rajni's mannerisms; to him trying to make the audience appreciate the singer wearing Pagdi while he was doing the amazing Aalap during 'Ghanan ghanan'. He interacted well with the audience and even got them to repeat swaras after him for around half a minute during another song. He did his usual experimentation and his own aalaps here and there - The above was just not the case with Sadhana. I still remember very clearly coming back from the concert 5 yrs ago thinking as to how she is able to sing so effortlessly – she was undoubtedly the best performer for that concert. But yesterday, not only did she have a few off keys here and there, she repeatedly forgot lines. It was just not her day. - Madhusree did a good job of the songs she sang and it was fun to listen to her pronunciation of the Tamil lyrics of Sanda Kozhi - ARR's patience was evident while they were singing 'Khwaja'; the 3 of them were seated with ARR in the middle playing Harmonium. The mike in front of ARR kept sliding down due to which he had to keep holding and correcting its position repeatedly. But all the time, not a single sign of annoyance or anger on the face in spite to having to do it again and again! But whatever chance he got to play the harmonica, he did it with his eyes closed and so very absorbed - was such a joy to watch. We tried hanging around till 1 pm with the hope of seeing ARR. Vishnu knew Naresh and was able to convey the message to him that yahoogroup fans are waiting but unfortunately, ARR had left by then. Thanks a lot to Vishnu for trying. We were however able to see some of the singers and even congratulate the Guitarist, etc for their performance. What a night! I have half a mind to book a ticket and come down to Chennai for the next one!! Lakki -- Lakki Abu Dhabi U A E

Dear Gopal, Truly overwhelming account of what happened. And for all the effort and dedication you have shown all these years for ARR, you deserve nothing less. Regards, Lakki Abu Dhabi UAE On 1/7/07, Gopal Srinivasan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Dear friends, When we set out to raise funds for the A.R.Rahman Foundation as a gift for ARR's birthday, I had only planned to send him an image of the cheque by email and the physical cheque only by courier. But when the contributions soared past anything I had hoped for, I felt it was only fair that it be handed over in person. And so, I set out to Chennai on Saturday morning not knowing if I would actually be able to meet him. Though by now, we have seen enough evidence of his simplicity I imagined being stopped by security guards even before I could let him know, all of which was completely unwarranted. Thanks to the never-say-no graciousness of ARR and Vijay's entreaties, I had the good fortune of being your representative at the birthday celebrations of the person whom many of us deify. Far from being met with for a few seconds and summarily dismissed, I was treated with the same affection, care and love by everyone at his home and studio as were many of the key personalities of the industry who made their way to his abode to greet him in person. I made my way to his home with some navigational aid from Vijay to only find a bunch of busy workers setting up the place in preparation for lunch. When I said that I had to meet ARR Sir, I was asked to wait in the first floor of the studio which is the building right in front of his home. I made my way there to find many people doing the same, some of them being Mr. Srinivasa Krishnan of Global Rhythms, Sridhar Subramaniam of Sony BMG, Naresh Iyer, executives from WorldSpace and Saregama and producers from the Tamil industry whom I did not recognize. I could see gifts of flowers from a host of people from the industry - Subhash Ghai, Udit and Deepa Narayan, Rajkumar Santoshi, Bharat and Kanika, Chinmayee, Radio Mirchi, Radio City were some names that I managed to spot amidst the sea of bouquets in the studio. ARR's right hand men Noell James, Sivakumar, Swamidorai, Faiz and H. Sridhar were also in attendance. We were soon joined by ARR's mother, daughters, son, wife and sisters and others in the family. I soon realized that simplicity and humility runs through every brick and body in his home and studio. ARR still hadn't turned up and his mother insisted that we must have lunch and we were ushered back into his home where ARR joined us. Soon director Shankar and family, Kathir, Krishna (of SOK), Praveenkanth made their way in. After lunch we made our back to the studio, were ARR took us to a large studio room on the 2nd floor and screened the video of Pray For Me Brother. I am still searching for words to describe the multiple exhilarating emotions that passed through me as I watched the video. Nothing we have heard so far in the live performances truly captures the brilliance of the recorded song. Who else, but ARR, could have an Indian classical harmony accompanying a rap segment? Following this, both ARR and his son Ameen, who also celebrates his birthday on the same day, cut the cake jointly. While his son wanted to cut his special 'Spiderman' shaped cake, ARR decided his simpler cake was more appropriate :-) Coming to the crux of my visit, it was the time after the birthday cake was distributed and everyone was leisurely seated around the studio that I chose to hand the cheque over to ARR. I wish I could say, 'Did we spring a surprise on ARR or what!' But ARR instead sprang a surprise on me! He looked visibly moved and said 'I have been telling these folks what you guys have been doing.' I went, "Huh?" And his response was, 'I was on the group last night and saw all these messages about a collection drive. You guys are increasing my responsibilities now'. I quickly assured him that he could count on our support in anything that he wanted to do. he then handed the cheque over to his mother and introduced me to the rest of the people there. He then asked, 'Don't you want a picture?'. I joked, 'I would like you to say a few words or else all the folks would think I made off with the money'. He laughed and agreed. I told him I could wait till the studio was a little quieter. He said fine and went on to have a private conversation with Shankar and then moved away to supervise some dubbing work for Guru that was underway at the studio. Before he left, I mustered the courage to ask him if there was any way I could get another look at Pray For Me Brother, to which his reaction was, 'Of course, why even ask?' and asked Abdul from the studio to screen it for me in one of the smaller rooms. Re: [arr] FAN CLUB
Hello Prashanth! We had tried to organise something of the sort in 2004 when ARR had his 2nd concert here. But nothing materialised. Later, we tried to bring together a few of the group's members last year when Swapnil was here. Though we did meet up with him, a real get together which i had in mind never worked out. I am still for it if others show some interest.. ROOTING FOR THE UNDERDOG Aamir Khan's belief in a lesser-known star cast led him to sign on for Rang De Basanti..-By S Krishnaveni Aamir Khan breathes life into every role he does. His sheer strength of performance brings a new meaning to the character essayed. Whether it be the romatic musical Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela (1995), Dharmesh Darshan's Raja Hindustani (1996), John Mathew Mathan's Sarfarosh (1999), Farhan Akhtar's Dil Chahta Hai and Ashutosh Gowarikar's Lagaan (2001), or his latest, Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra's Rang De Basanti, Khan does a lot more than act. Rang De Basanti sees Khan with a clean-shaven visage. The Mangal Pandey hairdo and the twirling moustache are missing. "I feel light without all that hair", he jokes. But jokes apart, Khan couldn't be more serious about films that he is now, considering Mangal Pandey did not fare according to his expectations at the box office. He is hoping Rang De Basanti will. He also wants it to do well because of its relatively unknown star cast. While Madhavan and Sharman Joshi are yet to create an impact in Bollywood, Atul Kulkarni is, at best, a character artiste, while Siddarth annd Kunal Kapoor are newcomers. At a time when Khan is doing his best to avoid the media's questions about his marriage to Kiran Rao, Rang De Basanti has strengthened the media glare on him. Khan says that for him the choice of a film is based on the script and "pure instinct. If a script moves me, I go for it." he says. Khan also opted for Rang De Basanti, as ït is a socially relevant and responsible film. "I play a character in his late 20s who is definitely not a college kid," Khan says, defending allegations of him playing a college student. "It is the character of a young man who graduated from university five years ago, but still hangs on around college studying different courses." Rang De Basanti's contemporary feel and the fact that it is relevant to the youth of today is what excites Khan. "It is a modern film with modern characters, but it is dramatically different from Dil Chahta Hai," he explains. Rang De Basanti also sees the actor singing a song titled Lalkaar. A inspirational track composed by A R Rahman, the lyrics are penned by Prasoon Joshi. Khan also confesses that while the world awaits his youth flick, his own kids probably like Harry Potter more. "That Harry Potter kid and Spiderman score over me," he says with a grin.
