[Note]: Most, but not all, DVD-Videos have 5.1 surround sound. And also the rare, but dying, DVD-Audio format falls in this category. There's no limitation on the number of channels, I find some English movies with 7.1 surround sound , you can also buy a 10.1 sound systems, if you can find source to utilize those channels. Almost all Media formats can reproduce mono and stereo, but not surround: Cassette tapes: Stereo and Mono CD: Stereo and Mono VCD: Stereo and Mono DVD: Surround, Stereo and Mono How does this relate to voiceless BGMs? Voiceless BGMs are only possible from surround sound, given that they were recorded and reproduce as surround. So, that leaves us with DVD-Audio, which I won't get into, and DVD-Video, by which we mean regular DVD movies. How are BGMs recorded on DVDs? I don't know exactly, but that's up to the composer and the sound engineer. But in order to qualify as surround sound, they have to record different sounds for different channels. For example they may record actors' voices for the CENTER channel and the background score for the two-REAR speakers and a combination of both voices and score on the two-FRONT speakers (this is hypothetical, simple and straightforward example): L/R Front speakers: Combination/layers of both voices and background score CENTER speaker: Only voices L/R Rear speakers: Only background score You can imagine watching a movie and an extra sound effect from back, or someone yelling from behind you or a car whooshing by. And remember, they can try many different combinations with 5 different channels. How to extract voiceless BGMs? Simply put, you have to tap into the channels that only contain the 'Background Score'. In the simple example given above, it would be the 'L/R Rear Speaker/Channel'. How do kaissiom and AJ extract voiceless BGMs? Well, I can't speak for AJ, but I know he uses some software. And as far as I'm concerned, I can write a longer post than this one trying to explain how I accidentally did it. My method is not all software- it's combination of hardware and software. I was fixing my computer and my home-theater system set-up, such that I can play the music from my computer on my surround sound system. This required additional cables, adapters, etc.. but I accidentally cut one wire and attached it in the wrong place somewhere on the soundcard and amplifier. And when I played a movie on my computer, all I could hear was voices, no BGM. When I switched some wires.. I got BGM, no voices... hence, voiceless BGMs. I still have to switch these wires... every time I have to extract voiceless BGMs ;-) How can one extract voiceless BGMs? -[Software]- Easiest way to do it: Find a DVD-ripping software that not only rips audio from DVD, but rips audio as separate channels. Once you have all the audio in different channels, keep the channel with BGM, discard the rest. -[Hardware]- Complicated way of doing it: Cut some wires from the

Tresses dont make a Rahman By Behindwoods News Bureau. December 24, 2007 Isai Kaatru was the name of the albumcomposed by Mohammed Rizwan and producedby Amish Kumar. The music album has lyrics by Vairamuthu and Pon.Murugesan who released the album with much fanfare at a gala event yesterday. While addressing the gathering at the function Vairamuthu was all praise for the composer for coming up with some melodious numbers that have maintained the purity of the lyrics. He later made a request to filmmakers, which he corrected with a note of caution that music launches should hitherto be called Songs launch which alone would be appropriate as it is only songs that are being launched at audio release functions and the lyricists would only then feel duly honored alongside the composers. He even had a word of advice for upcoming music composers who sport long tresses that it is not tresses that make a person a great composer like Rahman but ones compositions. He was all praise for the lyrics of Pon.Murugesan who had penned the other songs in the album and said that such music albums are going to be the future of Tamil music as they tend to retain the quality of the lyrics and they do not have to bank on visuals, as in he case of movies, to give it the necessary

Director Shyam, while speaking on the project, said that they are in the final stages of scripting and would highlight only the key incidents in the life of Buddha, as it would be very difficult to epitomize the life of a person in a three-hour film. X the new general entertainment channel from INX Media can take pride in its
new musical competition show, Mission Ustad. Indrani Mukerjea, CEO,
INX Media has joined forces with the United Nations (UN) and come up with a
noble concept for their new musical show. Mission Ustad(MU), pairs eight
professional singers from the Indian film industry as they compete against each
other for the title of Ustad jodi. But, as clichéd as it may sound, the good
thing about 9X's new show is it's for a noble cause. The prize money and
generated revenue at the end of the show will be forwarded to the UN Millennium
Development Fund and subsequently used for the development of India's needy
population. In 2000, United Nations members pledged to eradicate poverty and
usher development all around the world under the UN Millennium Development
Goals programme. Their objective was to achieve their goals by 2015 and the
resident coordinator UN in India, Maxine Olson revealed MU was a big step in
achieving their target. Mission Ustad is the perfect way to speak to millions
of people and deliver our message of
development and
prosperity, said Olson. Indrani Mukerjea, said the show would use
entertainment as a vehicle of spreading awareness about this UN programme.
Developed by Endemol, a company which has worked on shows like Big Boss, Deal
Ya No Deal and The Great Indian Laughter Challenge Dwitiya, MU has all the key
elements of a singing competition. It's got established singing pairs like Roop
Kumar and Sunali Rathod, Kailash Kher and Mahalaxmi Iyer, Vasundhara Das and
Mohit Chauhan and Naresh Iyer with Shweta Pandit. These jodis, who have already
established themselves as successful singers, will compose original music for
selected themes related to the UN Millennium fund and the best scores will make
it to the Mission Ustad album. The couple that contributes the maximum number
of songs will be the eventual winner. The show like any other reality based
programme has a panel of judges. AR Rahman, Javed Akhtar and Lara Dutta form
that panel. Rahman particular to judge
the music of the
compositions, Akhtar for the lyrics and Lara represents the UN as she is the
official UNFPA ambassador. It's all too familiar for a viewer to see reality
shows going overboard with emotional angles and contestant conflicts, but as AR
Rahman said MU is devoid of any histrionics. The contestants will have verbal
debates about their opinions and issues, but end of the day it will all be
dignified and in the country's interest. As a part of the show's format the
contestants will be given a chance to justify their choice of song with respect
to the theme involved. Javed Akhtar added to the same saying, The camaraderie
on the show sets apart any cynicism and bitterness of the competition. MU will
be a great source of inspirational programming . Incidentally, the show that
will be hosted by Simone Singh has a rocking theme song Jaago India. The song
in a sense embodies the idea behind Mission Ustad, which is to let the Indian
masses know about an
International programme that will help the nation's development. And all that
nobility will be delivered on 9X from December 1 in the form of an entertaining
