What can you tell us about the music of the film? For me the music of Rang De Basanti, philosophically is like the soul of the film. Rahman has been a very influencing factor in the way the movie has shaped up. Not only in terms of the music, but I have discussing the film with him since three years. I've been wanting to work with him since the past five years. I discussed various subjects with him, but then he heard Rang De Basanti. The fact that Rahman saw something special in my story made me think. He has interpreted the music of the film in a certain way and has juxtaposed the story with the sound. He is essentially the soul of Rang De Basanti and Prasoon Joshi has given it a voice. Prasoon is extremely talented and a true poet. His poetry touches you deep down. Commercially, I believe the album is selling like hot cakes! It is doing well without the help of major promos. Our marketing plan is yet to roll out. In fact, today is the first day that I am giving interviews for the film. As an opening film of the 30th annual Toronto International Film, it has been back in news after it was stopped from being shot in India years back. Third in the trilogy after Fire and Earth, 'Water' is director Deepa Mehta's long cherished dream that has finally been realized after a wait for number of years. Produced by David Hamilton, 'Water' was secretly shot in Sri Lanka and stars John Abraham, Lisa Ray, Seema Biswas, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Waheeda Rehman, Raghuvir Yadav and Baby Sarala in principal roles. Just like 'Fire' and 'Earth', A.R. Rehman gives music for 'Water' as well. Sukhwinder Singh begins 'Aayo Re Sakhi' in his trademark semi- classical rendition and just when you start thinking that the track would pump up its tempo, Rehman throws a surprise by keeping the pace consistent. There are very limited musical instruments in the background that makes 'Aayo Re Sakhi' a kind of number that deserves to be heard with more attention. A soothing rhythmic track with a strong classical base to it, it has a female singer joining Sukhwinder after the song is about half way through. Lyrics are poetic that convey the message of love, happiness, celebration and above all freedom. A song with a Radha-Krishan background, 'Bangri Marorii' has a rather strong classical base with again vocals doing all the talking (literally) with little or no music playing in the background. And this is where Rehman wins in creating a much desired effect by composing 'Bangri Marorii' in a manner that would be identifiable by people with strong understanding of music belonging to this genre. This is a kind of track that has a maximum impact when one wants to relax in dark isolation! By the time 'Naina Neer Bahai' begins, you are well aware about the style of music that Deepa Mehta and Rehman have chosen for 'Water'. This number too is totally subtle in nature and has references to Meera-Krishna love. With great lyrics and some excellent singing, this slow moving song about selfless love and admiration is an even better composition when compared to the earlier too and is a must for the lovers of classical/semi-classical music. Ditto for 'Piya Ho' that moves at even leisurely pace and is a duet where Sukhwinder Singh comes in towards the end. 'Bhang', 'nasha' and 'masti' are the key elements of the celebration song 'Sham Rang Mei' that appears to be a 'holi' song. Beautiful is the way to describe this duet that has an innocent feel to it. Lyrics too are different from numerous 'holi' tracks that have been composed over all these years and has a 'pure' feel to it. The album ends with one of the most popular 'bhajans' 'Vaishnava Jana To' that is known to one and all. One can almost sense Rehman's enjoyment over composing for 'Water' where he is not bound by commercial boundaries and has just let himself be free. He is completely uninhibited in his approach and comes up with a musical score that can be described in three words - 'Pure', 'Honest' and 'True'! Will the music of 'Water' turn out to be a commercial success? It is celebration time yet again for the lovers of high quality
classy music, as the musical genius A.R. Rahman is back with another
album for the 'perfectionist ace Khan', better known as Aamir Khan .
This time however he has Prasoon Joshi (and not the numero uno
lyricist Javed Akhtar, wonder why?) penning down the lyrics for this
modern patriotic film of a different kind. Rakeysh Mehra in his last
movie 'Aks' had Anu Malik as the composer and he had given some
scintillating numbers. But this time he opts for Rahman as he excels
in this genre of music.
We first have 'Ik Onkaar' (meaning the one God, the absolute
reality) which boasts of an excellent rendition by Harshdeep. The
approximate translation of this 'Gurbani' piece has to be
understood. We give meaning within brackets.
Ik Onkaar (The One, The Reality, Om), Sat Naam (Of name ever true
and eternal) kartaa purakh (The prime doer, the creator), Nirbhau
(Fearless) nervier (Without enmity), Akaal moorat (Of eternal form)
ajooni (Without birth, Uncaused), Saibangh (Self-existent and Self-
illuminating) Gurparsaad (Known by the grace of the enlightened
teacher) jap (Constantly repeat)."
An auspicious beginning indeed!
The title track, 'Rang De Basanti' has the Baadshah of Bhangra-Pop
Daler Mehdi, teaming yet again with A.R. Rahman (after 'Lakeer') and
the result is explosive! Daler's robust (at the same time full of
energy and vigour) voice commences this absolutely amazingly
rhythmic 'Bhangra' style number; forcing one to dance ('bhangra'
style!) intoxicated with feelings of patriotism.
The promos being aired on every channel introduces the album to the
audience (with the superb piece of the commencing 'ektara' music).
Trust Rahman to come up with something different - A 'bhangra' style
patriotic song! Daler is amazing as he conveys the feeling of
patriotism by mouthing Joshi's beautiful (simple) lyrics "Thodi si
dhool meri dharti ki mere watan ki, Thodi si khushboo baurayee si
mast pawan ki."
A.R. Rahman gave us "Mera Rang De Basanti Chola" ('The Legend Of
Bhagat Singh') but that was in a different league and for a
different time. The title track of 'Rang De Basanti' literally
sweeps one off their feet with its rhythm, musical arrangement and
the excellent Daler, along with an adequate Chitra. It is an
absolute stunner. What remains to be seen is whether it turns out to
a chartbuster or not.
In 'Paathshala' (meaning school) Naresh Iyer and Mohamed Aslam join
hands to sing this absolutely humorous situational number. It will
be identifiable for the youths of today and a nostalgia trip down
the school/college days for all. A score that conveys the carefree,
don't give a damn/rebellious attitude of Gen X. Lyrics are
situational, apt and at times hilarious - " Loose control, Chehre ki
kitaben hain, Hum woh padhne aate hain..
Yaaron ki equation hain,
Love multiplication hain."
The other version, 'Paathshala-Be a Rebel' has rapper Blaaze (first
heard in 'Yuva' and recently in 'Barsaat') joining Aslam and Naresh.
This time around he adopts a completely different rap style and
gives an insight into India (via his rap!) and what it has to offer.
It is totally different as only some portions of the 'mukhda' -
"Loose control, I am a rebel" and "Apni to Pathshala, Masti ki
Pathshala" are present in the second version. The English lyrics
here are by Blaaze.
Moving on to 'Tu Bin Bataye', it is a very slow paced, soft love
ballad, sung superbly by Madhushree but Naresh Iyer's voice simply
doesn't suit such numbers. In a way 'Tu Bin Bataye' is somewhat
reminiscent of M. M. Kreem's 'Jadoo Hai Nasha Hai' ('Jism').
However, this song is not a patch on Kreem's composition, even with
the addition of Rahman's crescendo (it does manage to salvage it
somewhat).
Next we have 'Khalbali' with the enigmatic A.R. Rahman singing in a
very Arabic style and showing his class and maturity as singer
(compared to his initial days). He has for company Aslam and Nacim
who sings the Arabic verses. It is a superb dance number (again with
a difference from the matchless Rahman) that should set the dance
floors on fire, especially if it is picturized on Aamir Khan who
will definitely do a terrific job.
Mohit Chauhan sings 'Khoon Chala', an absolutely wonderful
inspirational number with finesse coupled with emotions/feelings.
The track is slow to begin with but the tempo is gradually
heightened and ends with a trademark Rahman crescendo. The lyrics
are yet again situational, though a bit abstract at times, but
certainly delivers the message that a "Generation Has Awakened."
The much talked about 'Luka Chupi' has Rahman teaming up for first
time (as a singer) with his all time favourite, the ageless
nightingale Lata Mangeshkar. It is basically a song that conveys the
maternal feelings, the apprehensions and fears of a mother for her

Also, one thought that it would mark the hat- trick of films from such genre for Aamir Khan after 'Lagaan' and 'Mangal Pandey-The Rising' with a contemporary 'Dil Chahta Hai' in between. In contrast, the promos of this film by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (who had earlier directed the Amitabh Bachchan Manoj Bajpai starrer 'Aks') tell a different tale as the movie appears to be cool'n'hip flick with a strong rustic background. Also starring Madhavan, Atul Kulkarni, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor and Soha Ali Khan in important roles with veterans like Waheeda Rehman, Om Puri, Anupam Kher and Kirron Kher, this UTV production has music by A.R.Rehman (who also composed for Aamir Khan's Lagaan and Mangal Pandey) and lyrics by Prasoon Joshi who made waves for his work in 'Hum Tum' last year. http://indiafm.com/movies/musicreview/12493/index.html Album begins on a simple note with a quiet yet effective 'Ik Onkar' that has Harshdeep Kaur getting in a devotional mood. The track is quiet short and doesn't even last for 1 and a half minute, but it still paves for good things to come as the album progresses. Probably it was the intention for the people behind the album to begin it on an auspicious note and what better way than to have a Punjabi devotional track doing the honors! . As expected, quick acceleration happens in the proceedings with Rehman getting into the fifth gear right away with the title song 'Rang De Basanti' coming up next. You have been waiting for THE song from Daler Mehendi for a long time? Well, the wait is over with the bhangra-king in the top form after a long time with this celebration song that doesn't attempt to be one of your typical punjabi-bhangra tracks! Instead it creates a style of its own with the song completely dominated by Mehendi at every level. Chitra comes in for some portion of the song as well but her presence is akin to an actor doing a cameo in films. A vibrant number that truly brings with it 'punjab-ki-khushbu', it is (as expected) highly foot tapping and would be lapped by people from north to south, east to west across the country. . Newcomers Naresh Iyer and Mohamed Aslam unite for 'let's have a party yaar' kind of a number 'Paathshala' that has A.R.Rehman written all over it. A rhythm based western number; it belongs to a style that one must have heard in number of Tamil college flicks that had music by Rehman. A fine number, it would be interesting to see 40 year old Aamir Khan get back to his college going fun ways for this youthful number. The song, that also appears in another version as 'Paathshala Be A Rebel' with Blaaze joining Mohamed Aslam and Naresh Iyer, is based on college, campus and hostel life with everyone being carefree about things surrounding them. . Things turn poetic with 'Tu Bin Bataye' that maintains an amazing tempo in entirety with not a note getting wayward at any point of time. There are no ups and downs and has a plain simple melody with a constant flow that works marvelously due to Madhushree's vocals. She had done wonders earlier too for 'Kabhi Neem Neem,' [Yuva] and 'Hum Hain Is Pal' [Kisna] with A.R.Rehman and she repeats the feat with 'Tu Bin Bataye' that can easily be a lesson for many who wish to know more about the essence of Indian melody. The best song of the album so far with great lyrics by Prasoon Joshi, it amazingly adds on an instrument or two as it progresses along. By the time Naresh Iyer as a male voice is introduced and the song is about to reach its end, you realize many more nuances about the track. In one word marvelous! . After a song deep rooted in Indian melody, it's time to move middle- east with 'Khalbali' that has A R Rahman, Mohamed Aslam and Nacim [who also writes Arabic lyrics] coming together behind the mike. This song is a typical example of how Rehman music works. As like most of his tracks, this too takes time to grow and though it doesn't reach the dazzling heights to be a big time hit, it makes an impression as you hear it a few times. Credit it to Rehman's multi- piece orchestra that saves the song from turning out to be just an also-ran! . No! 'Khoon Chala' is not one of your tracks that you can hear on while working on something else! If you really want to enjoy the song in its totality, then hear it very close to your ear, probably with a headphone, and with complete concentration. This situational song is quite slow and completely belongs to Mohit Chauhan [from the band Silk Route] who does a wonderful rendition. With a strong melodious base, it belongs to Indi-pop variety and should be there in the movie for a right moment. . Aamir sings and dances with Daler 28th Apr 2005 12.17 IST By Agencies Aamir Khan will be seen `shaking a leg' in a dance number sung by himself with Punjabi pop star Daler Mehandi in his forthcoming film Rang De Basanti. Daler danced with Amitabh Bachchan in Mrityudaata and with Juhi Chawla in Arjun Pandit . And Aamir sang the famous Khandala number in Ghulam and then lend his voice to a song in Sarfarosh . But in Rang De Basanti, Aamir found it difficult to dance with Daler.
