[arr] Celebrations at Jaipur literature fest for 'Slumdog..', Gulzar feted

2009-01-23 Thread puneet
Jaipur (IANS): The spirit of bonhomie at the Jaipur Literature
Festival turned into celebratory cheer Thursday evening after the
announcement that the movie "Slumdog Millionaire", based on career
diplomat-author Vikas Swarup's novel "Q and A", had bagged 10 Oscar
nominations.

Though the author, who was present at the festival Wednesday, had left
for Mumbai for the premiere of the movie Friday, lyricist Gulzar, who
has penned the lyrics for "Jai ho" that has been nominated for best
original song for the 81st Annual Academy Awards, became the hero of
the evening.

The posse of writers, publishers and the large contingent of
representatives from the publishing industry across the world erupted
into cheer and uncorked bottles of champagne as a spokesperson
announced the nominations on stage.

"It is a historic moment for me. This is my first international
recognition. I am so happy for both composer A.R. Rehman, who has won
three nominations and Vikas," the beaming lyricist, clad in spotless
white, told the media post-dinner.

Gulzar, a close friend of the director-general of the Indian Council
for Cultural Relations Pavan Varma, arrived in Jaipur Wednesday to
attend a special session on poetry with Varma.

"My daughter and her husband rang me from Mumbai in the evening to
convey the news. It feels wonderful. But I am especially happy that
A.R. Rehman has won three nominations. He is the best thing that has
happened to contemporary Indian music - his arrival has changed the
music scene forever," Gulzar told the media.

According to him, "there were many more people who were behind his
nomination". "For instance, the director of the movie Danny Boyle -
without him the nominations would have been impossible. Certain
compositions gelled so well with the shots," he said.

The lyricist met writer Vikas Swarup Wednesday. "We were discussing
it. I did not expect a nomination for myself, but I had pinned my
hopes on Rehman. He is very dear to me and has made the country
proud," he said.

When quizzed about the protests against the movie in Mumbai, Gulzar
said he did not want to be drawn into a controversy. "Why do you want
to talk about negative things. Let us celebrate the positive
development. It is the biggest honour for the country's entertainment
industry," he said.

The mood was infectious. Almost everyone - right from the
representatives of ICCR to the CEO of Penguin, which hosted the
official dinner, director Muzaffar Ali, who anchored the Coexist
Concert for Peace in tribute to the terror attacks in Mumbai and Gaza,
the musicians and writers from Pakistan, the posse of authors from
Europe and India and the cream of the glitterati from Delhi and Jaipur
- was unanimous in their verdict: India could not have been more proud
that it was Thursday evening. "It feels great," echoed all cutting
across divide.

As for writer Vikas Swarup, it was luck all the way. "I have always
been a lucky author," he told IANS.

[arr] Happy Birthday Genius

2008-01-06 Thread puneet
Wish you a Very Very Happy Birthday Rahman sir.

[arr] AR Rahman pleases Rajni fans with Sivaji - rediff review

2007-04-03 Thread puneet
Finally, the most-awaited Sivaji album has been released. The film
Sivaji -- The Boss has the biggest Tamil cinema stalwarts lined up
under highly reputed AVM banner -- director Shankar; composer A R
Rahman; lyricists Valee, Vairamuthu, Pa Vijay, Muthukumar;
cinematographer K V Anand; dialogue writer Sujatha; art director
Thotta Tharani; choreographers Prabhudeva, Raju Sundaram, Lawrence and
Brinda; and, over and above all, superstar Rajnikanth in the title role.

Shriya Reddy plays the female lead. Incidentally, Sivaji is director
Shankar's ninth film, and Rajni's ninth with AVM. The title of the
film resonates with Rajnikanth's real name, Shivaji Rao Gaekwad.

Previously director Shankar always managed to keep movie details close
to his chest till the release. But Sivaji became an exception with
first the storyline becoming common knowledge, and then three music
tracks leaked on the Internet. Shankar's films always deal with
malpractices in various sectors of society. Likewise, Sivaji also is
supposed to be the story of an NRI crusading against the capitation
fee syndrome, the bane of our educational system.

A R Rahman's compositions are in tune with the crusader image of the
film's protagonist. The lyricists have milked Rajnikanth's screen
image to the fullest, making the line dividing the actor and the
character very thin. They are really on an overkill trip.

The album kicks off with the foot tapping number Balleilakka
aggressively rendered by S P Balasubramaniam, Rehanah Benny and an
effective chorus. The opening line has a faint echo of Rahman's
Veerapandi kottayilae from his own Thiruda Thiruda. Lyricist Na
Muthukumar eulogises Tamil Nadu and the Tamilian's supportive
camaraderie with his neighbours. He also paints a larger than life
picture of the hero comparing him to the sun, moon and even Shiva the
destroyer, with lines like 'he can even turn Tamil Nadu into America.'
SPB's rendition is vibrant and the fast pace towards the end makes him
sound breathless. The number has aggressive percussion and faint
melodious nuances in between.

The racy track Oru koodal sunlight follows with obvious reference to
the superstar's sobriquet 'Stylemannan.' It is a scrappy number with
Pa Vijay's lyrics, a medley of bits and pieces of phrases. He even
coins new appellations for the hero like 'heerathihero!' Rags, Tanvi,
Suresh Peters and Blaze belt out this peppy piece. Fast beats and
Tanvi's whispery rendition give it a sensuous touch.

Sahana saral thoovutho is a melodious piece with western
instrumentation. This is the only track (along with the Vaji vaji
number later) with significant lyrics. Vairamuthu's lyrics have an
appealing freshness and originality. This track, a love duet rendered
by Udit Narayan and the dulcet-voiced Chinmayi, has been embellished
with a sprightly chorus. The only jarring note is Narayan's stilted
Tamil diction.

A second version of Sahana, much better than the first, soulfully
rendered by Vijay Jesudas, comes later. Gomathi Sri replaces Chinmayi
in this version full of pain and pathos. It is a pity this second
version is not included in the cassette, but only on the CD. Gomathi
Sri's voice, though a bit babyish, has an identity of its own.

Vaji Vaji is the title track, with all the potential to become a
chartbuster -- pleasing rhythm and a powerful rendition by Hariharan
and Madhusree, good instrumentation, fast beats, lively chorus, and a
good melody. Vairamuthu's lyrics exude passion, but thankfully not
excessively.

Up next is the theme song Vata vata by Blaze, Naresh Iyer and Raqueeb
Alam. Beginning in hip-hop style with a few English words thrown in,
the track soon slides into rap. As in earlier numbers, the lyrics (Na
Muthukumar with Blaze) picturise a superhero 'who can gobble up even a
lion like a jalebi!'

Rahman the composer as singer comes into his element with concluding
track Athiradi. Another chartbuster in the making, it is incendiary
stuff with power-packed percussion. The solo guitar and Rahman's
singing -- with a manic vibrancy in his soaring voice -- really adds
to its impact. This will be a hot favourite on the dance floors. The
lyrics are more or less irrelevant in these kind of songs, and Valee's
lyrics -- with titles of some Rajni films and a spatter of English
words -- fall in line.

Rajni fans will have a field day listening to this album because the
lyrics are more synonymous with his film persona than his character in
the film..

Rahman's music is such that it takes repeated listens, and time to
grow on you. Only Athiradi captures your sensibility instantly. The
other numbers are worth a listen, but feature nothing extraordinary.
They make you yearn for the old Rahman of Gentleman and Roja.

An album in tune with the pulse of the current generation

[arr] Dil Se Re - Ae ajnabi my favourite, says Gulzar

2006-03-27 Thread puneet

Flashbacks always, but always, land you back in the present. But in
my case, I'm flitting from one flashback to another. And the story
about A R Rahman continues...

I remember it had been two years since I first met Rahman and our
maiden musical venture had been nixed, when I got a call from Mani
Ratnam saying he wanted to meet me. When we met, he asked me to write
the songs for his next film, Dil Se. A R Rahman was to score the
music, he told me. That excited me so I agreed to write the lyrics
there and then. To help me, Mani gave me an outline of the story
(without giving away much), a graph of the two main characters, the
theme of the movie and the kind of treatment he was planning for the
story—that's it. Generally speaking, when I write songs for a movie, I
like to be aware of the entire script. But no such help was
forthcoming here.

But with a director of Mani Ratnam's calibre, you're confident he
knows what he's doing. So I wasn't worried when he didn't tell me much
about the movie. In fact, not knowing the entire plot had its upside.
When I write for other movies, I have one advantage: I know the kind
of language the characters will speak, so I write accordingly. Here I
didn't know anything; even the song situations were free-floating.
Mani just told me the overall theme of the songs and it was very
inspiring. Even more inspiring was the treatment he was planning to
give the musical numbers. Mani was the first director who actually
asked me to give abstract images for his narrative. Most of our Hindi
film directors like their songs to have cinematic images that can be
picturised easily, but Mani wanted abstract images and I welcomed that
whole-heartedly.

While we were discussing the song situations, Mani quoted the famous
Persian poet Maulana Rumi. He told me he wanted me to write a song on
the seven stages of love starting with `uns', `ulfat', `mohabbat' and
ending with the ultimate `junoon'. He also added that the song would
be repeated throughout the film. Since I'm well versed with the poetry
of Rumi and Hafiz, I understood what Mani wanted.

As expected, Rahman had more than one composition for the theme song.
There was one, and one more and another one. He just kept pulling them
out and kept saying, can we do this, can we do that? Ultimately, we
finalised one tune to which I wrote Satrangi re. That was the first
song I wrote for Dil Se.

Another song, Jiya jale, sung by Lataji (Lata Mangeshkar), was a
suhaag raat song and I thought Rahman combined it beautifully with
South Indian folk. That was the first time Lataji sang for Rahman. I
was there when she recorded the song and she was quite pleased about
it. As I've mentioned earlier, Rahman's studio is dimly lit and the
small glass room where the singer stands can be quite lonely because
you can't see anything or anyone from there. Lataji felt slightly
awkward about it and she murmured, `Akeli khadi kis ke liye gaa rahi
hoon main.' So I found a stool and sat on it outside her glass door so
that she could see me. That, I think, assured her. I must add here
that she sang Jiya jale brilliantly in her mellifluous voice.

Today when I look back, I realise Dil Se marked an important phase in
my career as a lyricist. Important because I was working with Rahman
and a great director like Mani Ratnam for the first time. Also Dil Se
started a new phase for me, that of writing Sufiana poetry. Just as
Humne dekhi hai unn aankhon ki mehekti khushboo had set off a phase of
using abstract imagery in my songs early on.

Rahman, being a religious man, enjoyed composing for Dil Se too. I
could see that the Sufiana lyrics brought out the best in him. By then
he'd also learnt a little bit of Hindi so he could understand my
poetry. In Dil Se there were three Sufiana songs. But my favourite
remains Ae ajnabi tu bhi kabhi aawaz de kahin se. I think it was a
really beautiful song.

But the one that really became a rage was Chal chhaiyan chhaiyan.
There is a song of Sufi poet Bulleh Shah's called Tere ishq nachaya
kar thaiyya thaiyya, which Sukhwinder used to sing. Rahman loosely
based his composition of Chal chhaiyan chhaiyan on that. The entire
orchestration was all Rahman's, of course. On my part, I tried to
refresh the song by using the words chhaiyan chhaiyan instead of
thaiyya thaiyya. Many people thought the words chhaiyan chhaiyan were
just sounds used for effect. But that's not true; chhaiyan means
chhaon or shade and it's a commonly used word in rural Hindi and in
our folk songs. The next line—Jinke sar ho ishq ki chaon, paon ke
neeche jannat hogi, chal chhaiyan chhaiyan—explains the concept of
chhaiyan chhaiyan. Sukhwinder sang the song with a storming energy and
an infectious voice with Sapna Awasthi ably supporting him. The
popularity of that song is history—hence the title of this column,
Chal Chhaiyan Chhaiyan.
